This game is fantastic. For fans of STALKER and METRO, this game has nothing to envy. Furthermore, the base building is outstanding, as is the connection with the characters. The story and the exceptional graphics make it one of the most beautiful games in the genre set near Chernobyl.

Really enjoyable game with great atmosphere and story. Since the game doesn't offer an extreme difficulty and challenge for hardcore gamers, it's more focused on the travel and the stories Igor live during his search for Tatyana. Feels like STALKER (game) and Roadside Picnic.

Overall I enjoyed my time with the game, the story and setting were interesting and the characters were all voiced well. My main gripe was the performance, the game suffers from stuttering in both DX11 and DX12, and the frame rate in certain areas absolutely tanks for no obvious reason. I really feel like the game needed another performance pass as it's not up to snuff right now.

This game is very good. Graphics are good enough and the story is very good. I didn't like the ending part. Other things are very good. Don't expect too much. The walking and exploring real Chernobyl is very good and different feeling and i loved it.

It has an effect on you and that is also great. Some enemies you can't take out with stealth, some you can. Meaning that you will have to get loud at some point or sneak past everybody. Your choice.

Anyway, great game, I had zero bug on pc, but I guess I played it after all the bugs were patched out.

Fantastic atmosphere combined with excellent graphics and new technologies DLSS and FSR do their job. Yes, the animations, story, gameplay, sound and text localization (into Russian) are not ideal, but for the familiar voices from Stalker and Metro from me a separate thanks. The composer hit the top ten, the soundtrack is memorable. There is good support from Ansel.

I went through so many frustrating things to get the story for nothing, i cant stress enough how extremely frustrating this is.

Companion reaction to your actions in the game makes no sense, and you can easily loose essential crew needed to be able to finish it, Not even the in game "choice changer" will save you..

Save system is awful as well, even if you manual save the the save will be the save that the game last think is the "proper time" to save. So spent 30 mins gathering materials? Well too bad! because the game don't think that is part of progress.

They decided to remove hipfire impacting gunplay in a really negative way, having to "aim" the weapon you are using even though the enemy is right in your face feels bad.
There is loads of other small issues aswell, that as a whole really lowered the quality of the whole experience.

On the positive side, the (Russian)voice acting is great, the story(the part i got to see before i was locked out by gamebreaking developer design) was interesting enough to make me battle trough the mountain of **** to see what would happen next.

The atmosphere of the game is great aswell, gave me the same feeling as i had in stalker and metro, though the game it self are quite different and simpler than those.

I don't recommend playing this game without a proper detailed guide, something that seems to not exist at this moment.

This was a relatively decent game. I was pleasantly surprised, but I had a pretty low expectation coming into it. Not scary at all, unless you count some jump-scares once every 5 missions scary.

The VA was hit or miss, the side-characters had much more charm than the main one did, with that british accent. Better than the russian voice tho, where I literally had to look at the pictures,

One dude said normal is way too easy at some point, and I agree. While at the start I was still bothering with stealth, mid-game and towards the end i was just casually murdering everything, poppin a vodka and whistling to the objective.

The ending was only half-predictable, so props for that! But the "bad" ending was really underwhelming.

Base building, again like with the difficulty, was charming only at the beginning. Around the 4th side-kick i'd already built pretty much everything and was stockpiling ammo and gas, was srsly building closets for revolver ammo.... Balance that out a bit my guys.

Overall I enjoyed it, and I'd recommend it, but not as a Stalker or Metro replacement. Considering it's a small-ish studio with no srs gaming cred, it was a good game.

    pros:

gameplay loop is fun as hell you wake up go to a map and just start exploring and scavenging everything you can and killing soldiers and mutants along the way after that you go to your base and upgrade it by placing all kinds of workshops and generators to sustain yourself

the weapons feel really good and authentic

the game looks really good the devs did a really good job with the unreal engine

the game is very immersive and you really quickly get sucked into it and the whole vibe of being a stalker

story is really cool although predicable at times

i really liked the base building i had a lot of fun customizing my own base and making it my own

there are random encounters you can have in the game with other stalkers and scavengers where you can exchange stuff and gather information that's a really cool add on and makes the maps you explore more alive

    cons:

the way they did the whole tale tale pick your road is really bad the whole execution was done poorly and most of the time i had a wiki near me just so i can get this over with

if you die you get send to a prison so does your companion if you send him to a risky mission the problem here is that you never unlock a fast way to get to that prison the only way to get their is to basically die so imagine me having end game gear and just trying to die just so i can get my companion as i said... done very poorly

the psyche mechanic is also very dumb and i don't care if your a weak scientist that cant take it if people die and the dumbest thing here is they way you recover your psyche is to drink vodka in my opinion this was the most useless mechanic in the game

not enough maps and at the end after 24 hours of playing i felt like there wasn't enough maps to explore and that they just recycled maps for story parts

the game did scare me a couple of times but that was only because i did not expect cheap jump scares after i realized that it didn't really bother me if they wanted to make the game scarier they could add more scarier mutants like a deathclaw from fallout or something alike now that would be scary as f@#$

in conclusion chernobylite is on its own a diet stalker its fun and cool but in my opinion if they make a sequel just throw the whole choices element out. make more maps and double down on exploring and fun random interactions and cool gameplay and bigger scarier monsters.
i do recommend this game but at a lower price

my final score to chernobylite is a 7.5 out of 10

The graphics are nice but then the game is very buggy and stuttery at times. The gameplay loop gets very boring after a couple of times. 1. wakeup 2. some sort of mission prompt via radio 3. assign missions for yourself and the bots 4. do missions, some story but mostly junk collecting 4. Assign food rations 5. Perhaps build some stuff in your bunker 6. Go to bed. 7. REPEAT until story over. That's the game mostly. The maps are decent but nowhere near say Witcher 3 size, which with all DLC is 36gb install, this game is about the same size install for a much smaller in game area. You just use the same few maps over and over, mostly empty too. English VO is awful, stick with ukranian and do the subtitles. The base building is from Fallout 4, just in one area and much smaller, no settlers other than 1-2 companion bots. You get 3 guns you can use total: AK, revolver, Shotgun. You can upgrade them, not very interesting. You can build things like armor etc but that involves a LOT of grind, not too interesting. There are bugs of course. You can tell they were trying to cash in on the hunger for more stalker but it's only the setting and themes that are similar. All in all the only thing I can see that's good here are the graphics and they're not really jaw dropping tbh. I'd wait for a drastic price cut, watch yt play etc before buying this. Also the reviews seem to be really skewed and this is an indication of manipulation either by the publisher or some sort of weird nationalistic craziness. Expand

The Chernobylite 's plot is intriguing and engaging. Gameplay-wise, the game features an intelligent and solid combination of different game mechanics that, although they don't stand out for their originality, do because of how well they are combined. Chernobylite is not focused on killing or shooting -despite being allowed, but does reward and encourages strategical, non-lethal, and stealth-based playstyles. The gameplay needs your patience and is strongly focused on the best management of daytime, weather, resources, and player inventory.

It is an open-world game in the sense that it allows you to freely explore each of its different maps, even multiple times. The game features a system that will change dynamically the environment, weather, and the game events of the maps, based on the player's actions and decisions.

In terms of bug polishing, there are certainly still some bugs and imperfections that the player will notice and find, but in my case, I haven't found anything that prevents enjoying the game and progressing.

As for the level of optimization and performance issues, although the performance is acceptable and good 90% of the time, a significant recurring micro-stutter/hiccup issue hasn't yet been fixed. The stuttering/hiccups issue is annoying and can break the immersion of the player in the game. I hope the issue is finally mitigated or fixed with the next game patches or updates.

Considering all of the above, I recommend this good indie PC game and, for me, it scores 7.5 out of 10.

Now the story being strong is a good thing, but the good story could be written into the book – the purpose of the video game is to allow you to enjoy the story in the form of a video game and frankly, Chernobylite sucks big time as a game. Game mechanics, feature implementations, “fast travelling” or rather transitions into the gameplay areas are all quite nonsensical and terribly implemented. If anything they are annoying and distracts the player from what is an overall good story.
Now when it comes to the actual “zone”… there is no zone per se… it contains 6 different tiny areas and you have a “warehouse” which acts as your base and for some reason you can see out of it like from top of a skyscraper, then you simply teleport into the small arena to complete repetitive and basic tasks. To give you a rough idea of the size of the “zone” – it would all fit in the Cordon map of Stalker SoC. And I am not exaggerating – to walk from one side of the map to another takes ~3 minutes.
It is hard to even explain how repetitive and boring the gameplay is. Wake up>assign tasks>do the same task in the same area over and over and over again> back to home> give food to companions > go to sleep and repeat. To justify the grind game includes the base building which again is fairly basic and frankly annoying. Imagine Fallout 4 base building mechanics, just 5 times more basic and have almost no purpose. It exists solely to justify the need to gather resources and spend them. I have seen somebody comparing this game with “war of mine” just in 3D and it does feel like it. The difference is that war of mine was simple and fun to play little game which does not tyre you and could be played in one long evening and does not require 20-30 hours to complete.

Gameplay is basically rinse and repeat, go into mission a dozen times and you are done with the game. There are basically about 1 hour of actual gameplay, 4 hours of watching the screen as the story is being told and another 15 hours of grind and frustration trying to figure out what the game actually wants from you.
In the end, this game claims it is non-linear, but it isn’t strictly true either. The story will end the same either way, your gameplay does not affect it, in the end, you can choose the way you want to end the game. Sure decisions will make the difference on who lives and who dies, and that will change epilogues of the NPCs in the game, but it does not affect the end of the game.
Even the “hyper-realistic” claim is just partially accurate – yes 3D scanned items and buildings are hyper-realistic, but maps are tiny and good quality assets are only 5-10% of the game. The rest of the game has a lot of generic assets which are in varying conditions, some are average, some are acceptable, but others are outright horrible.
Gunplay is rather terrible; it goes from unrealistically underpowered to broken overpowered in few steps. Enemies are very stupid and blind, but when you alert them they shoot very quickly and with amazing accuracy. Basically, there are two modes for enemies – not seeing or instantly shooting at you with absolute accuracy.
In summary, then, I do understand this game is very low budget, very ambitious and had some good ideas which sadly were not implemented very well. The story itself is interesting, but game mechanics are just so bad that it distracts from the story rather than lets you play through it. The game world is tiny, tasks are repetitive, game mechanics is not intuitive. Good and detailed graphics diluted with large quantities or poorly placed, scaled and generic assets making the overall experience mediocre at best. Gunplay and gun’s themselves suck, perhaps intentions were to make the game where one does not need to shoot, but playing it stealthily is not an option either.
Considering the low budget and that it was developed by a small indie studio I guess you can call it even impressive. it clearly was very ambitious, but big ambitions do not make big games, so the most I could squeeze for this would be 3/10.

The reactor exploded because of the what appeared to be an excess of Chernobylite growing. The problem is I have no idea how that ties in with the missions or how it happened. I stopped playing at that point.

The gunplay is okay, nothing special, you cant see your body. Most of the fights are just get to cover, lean and shoot at the heads anyway.

An interesting return to The Zone and a perfect game to help you survive the wait for Stalker 2. Chernobylite is atmospheric, intriguing, sometimes beautiful, but also needlessly bloated with distracting elements that force you to deal with unimportant or repetitive stuff. It has its issues, but first and foremost it’s an original game with an engaging story and I do recommend it. [10/2021, p.24]
