Multiplayer, on the other hand, leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. The maps are too small, there's no teamwork whatsoever, and you're better off shooting with an assault rifle than a sniper rifle at extreme range. Everything is deadly accurate at extreme range and kills in one or two shots. Furthermore, things like airstrikes and chopper support are awarded not by team related objectives but by kill streaks of a single player. Thus, it actively rewards fighting like a sissy, and punishes any who would do something risky to attempt to complete any of the objectives in the multiplayer objective modes. It essentially amounts to a whole lot of people camping, paying no attention to the various points to be captured, etc. Frustrating as hell. Expand

Clearly one of the best shooters out there. It has large improvements over CoD2 and 3, that surpass anything the mods for those could ever do. This game has the juiciness and thrill of Gears Of War: Just a pretty-looking generic FPS. And just like Gears Of War, it's well over hyped, as Oliver D. states. Sure, they got the cut scenes and such down, but this is a game, not a movie.

I'm not a single-player gamer so this is a multi-play review of the game. CoD4 is an exclusively modern infantry based game that offers several game modes. At first the game play seems to be very ambitious but then after a while it feels limited with the small maps, limited team functions, and the default settings for spectate-only mode are crippled. At first the game play seems to be very ambitious but then after a while it feels limited with the small maps, limited team functions, and the default settings for spectate-only mode are crippled. Its not that the game is bad, but I find BF2 and BF2142 to be much more ambitious and satisfying multiplayer FPS games. CoD4 tries to keep things simple and do what it does well, and it succeeds in that. I find that after a while, the highly repetitive gameplay grows tiresome. The game clearly borrows much from Counterstike, a game I don't care much for. Also some of the maps I don't care for because they focus only on quick reflexes and almost no thinking thus the shallow experience. Also even on servers with a low ping like 20 or 30ms, the other players jerk around as they move, not moving smoothly. Its better than Counter Strike, about the same as TF2, but not as good as UT3 or Crysis and certainly not as good as BF2/2142. There is much to like in CoD4 multiplayer, if you like simplicity and repetition, and I mean that in a good way (not great way). It's certainly one of the new top PC online FPS games for 2007. Definitely check it out. Don't expect a huge and deep online experience in CoD4. (I've been playing FPS games since, well, 1981 - Battlezone) Expand

OK this game would be a 9 if it weren't for the 'veteran' difficulty. Game developers still need some help with this ... "Highest difficulty" does NOT MEAN "give every NPC on the map clairvoyance and 100% firing accuracy, and all friendly AI the inability to hit a barn door at 2 paces". I just poked my head around a corner as a horde of enemy ran from cover 400 yards away. OK this game would be a 9 if it weren't for the 'veteran' difficulty. I just poked my head around a corner as a horde of enemy ran from cover 400 yards away. ON THE RUN (and bear in mind the player cannot fire when running) these 4 guys all hit me with impunity. Later in the same level, I stood behind Griggs, the Automatic Rifleman, and watched over his shoulder as he emptied his M249 (the big, heavy machine gun that deals only in heavy death) at a static target from 10 YARDS AWAY. He missed with EVERY SHOT. Elsewhere in the game I just shrugged my shoulders at the numerous times I died at the hands of an NPC wielding a MAC-10. It would be ok, but he was 500 yards away and I had him in the optic of my sniper rifle. Other times I laughed as I got shot by a guy whose gun was pointed at something else, and chuckled at the amazingly non-realistic arcs the super-accurate barrage of grenades was flying in. Now OK, COD4 is amazing, its a brilliant game - but truthfully - the veteran mode is only for the truly patient. It does not make you feel skilful to beat it, because you know full well that the NPC's are always fully aware of where you are, even when hidden, and have perfect aim. There's no point sniping from range because the AIs keep respawning in the same place, and keep throwing grenades in the same spots (PRE-SCRIPTED waypoint BOTS AIS!!!!). To demonstrate just how crap the experience is, most of the time you can just run forward rambo style, camp behind a crate, which doesn't move because its fixed geometry, and let ur buddies do the killing. Since ur in the most forward position the AIs won't respawn, if you hung back a bit they would have .... Special squad mates don't die, shoot captain price in the head and he'll give you a bit of an insult, but thats about it. When you evac, its no point taking your time, due to BS respawn and immortal squad mates, just run through the whole map to the helicopter, and wait for ur buddies to get shot to bits and still survive. In the sniper mission however you have to wait for the copter. The best strat is to camp at the AI respawn points to prevents a BS infinite waves of bots swaping you down. Bullet penetration is the only real physics you get, just about all the objects in game don't move unless its part of some linear scripted sequence. You can only jump over fences when the game lets you. All vehicle missions bits are prescripted, you cant move the vehicles around, you just shoot. Replay the mission and you'll shoot at exactly the same places. Multiplayer is quite addictive I must admit as a run and gun spam fest, can play this stuff for hours. The generals have the advantage though pwning all the noobs with BS perks and guns. Expect a lot of deaths to air strikes and helicopters, and expect a lot of trash talk from guys with self esteem problems. Character customisation would have been nice ... no female solder option either, so don't expect any ladies playing this. Overall very OVERRATED ... a multiplayer only game for me, the single player campaign nearly made me wanna quit playing games. Expand

For example, the surrounding environments seem inanimate with regards to the skyline, grass, and bushes. In addition, a player cannot randomly open doors, climb fences, or console with our fellow soldiers. It is apparent that the developers were attempting photorealism, but failed to recognize the true nature of realism. I realize the developers were striking a balance between high-end PC's and low-end PC's. Nevertheless, the high end PC's should be offered the option of differentiating their respective gaming rig over their mid or low end predecessors.
