Probably the best of the classic CoD. A game produced on the wave of the American department's fight against terrorism. If you have never played CoD, you must play Modern Warfare. The atomic bomb explosion scene is impressive so far, it is a very immersive experience.

this game revolutionized fps genre , its the first time that call of duty left the ww2 scenario and transitioned into modern warfare like the game title says and it was a great and fun transition the game is excellent , while the story of the game is not as complex as black ops the gameplay and the missions are extremely fun which is the whole point of a fps game the multiplayer is great too

I preferred Sniper Elite where at least you get missions that you can do in your own way. I would only give this a 5 or 6 for being so short, but the multiplayer makes it worthy of a 7. OK this game would be a 9 if it weren't for the 'veteran' difficulty. Game developers still need some help with this ... I just poked my head around a corner as a horde of enemy ran from cover 400 yards away. ON THE RUN (and bear in mind the player cannot fire when running) these 4 guys all hit me with impunity. Later in the same level, I stood behind Griggs, the Automatic Rifleman, and watched over his shoulder as he emptied his M249 (the big, heavy machine gun that deals only in heavy death) at a static target from 10 YARDS AWAY. He missed with EVERY SHOT. Elsewhere in the game I just shrugged my shoulders at the numerous times I died at the hands of an NPC wielding a MAC-10. It would be ok, but he was 500 yards away and I had him in the optic of my sniper rifle. Other times I laughed as I got shot by a guy whose gun was pointed at something else, and chuckled at the amazingly non-realistic arcs the super-accurate barrage of grenades was flying in. Now OK, COD4 is amazing, its a brilliant game - but truthfully - the veteran mode is only for the truly patient. It does not make you feel skilful to beat it, because you know full well that the NPC's are always fully aware of where you are, even when hidden, and have perfect aim. SO the moment you peek round that corner you haven Expand

Personally, the real reason the original 2 in the series were so engaging was the player experienced real locations in a war that really happened. The insignificance of your stature in a war that big really brought it home the ubsurdity and horror of war! The success of the COD (call of duty) line has been from its online multiplayer add-on, and Infinity Ward try their luck here. The online experience is geared towards the console market which makes the pc conversion a little too easy for spray and pray/camper brigade. In addition, the maps are a little too small and confined which makes its a little hectic in bigger servers of 24 man plus. Although the game will most definatley become better as custom maps and modding emerge (spawn protection a must), as it stands from the actual release from Infinity Ward/Activision, its not that good. Could do better IMO. Expand

Multiplayer is definitely worth playing as it can be fun at times, but be ready to be kicked quite a few times if you're remotely good at this game as you can get kills through the wall quite easily and immature admins kick you for wallhacking. But that's just the community so I'm not taking any scores off because of that. I wish they fixed the killstreak system as you will spend ages sitting in the corner trying to get rid of that helicopter call you have, or you could just waste it.
If you have played previous CoD games, the single player will probably disappoint you, but multiplayer has some fun elements to it. For someone who has never played CoD or FPS games, this game could provide you with a lot of fun.

Very solid game. The single player is fun but short.

The multiplayer is also pretty fun. However, considering the high player count on servers on the PC version, it feels too congested sometimes, and the game play degenerates into an absolute spamfest. Expert and respectful checkpoint placement means that you will never redo a section previously beaten twice. Playing on hard is highly recommended as the various mechanics and level design will be more thoroughly experienced. The shooting is both varied and weighty. The levels are designed in such a way as to hint the player towards multiple possible tactical approaches ; Choosing to storm the inside of a building is as challenging as it should and might reward you with a unique vantage point. The various set pieces are seamlessly integrated and never feel odd or disconnected from the main mechanics. The voice acting is great and the minimalist story telling keeps the scenario engaging and fairly credible. That said, the game is clearly part of a sophisticated war propaganda machine and is likely indirectly responsible for the death of many young testosterone filled adolescents in need of adventure ; I believe this will be rightly regarded as a historical piece of Zionist propaganda down the line. The main villain's name is even named after the current president of Syria, whom the Zionists are currently trying to actively murder ; Russian patriots are also antagonized. The visuals, animations and lighting hold surprisingly well, and thoroughly immerse . Modern warfare is not only a good shooter, it is simply one of the best FPS experience of all time and deserves to be celebrated as such. Expand

Most of the battles are conducted at a range of about six inches and the enemy for much of the game just spawns out of sight and runs at you, so essentially most of the set piece battles are just like a game of whack-a-mole. Any sense of realism to the plot or story goes right out the window because the fights are just silly, at one point I was sent to rescue a tank, during which mission I blew up four enemy tanks and gunned down about a million people. How can I give a rat's arse about a plot to save the crew of one tank when I've just wasted enough people to fill a football stadium? Honestly I can't see how this game is rating so highly because in terms of gameplay it's a step down in evolution from Rainbow Six: Vegas, in fact I'd say R6: Vegas has more going for it. Finally I'd also just say I resent the fact this is the most expensive PC game I've ever bought, with an RRP much higher than usual, and it's also one of the shortest single player games, and it's not even like it took much effort to make considering it's not even using a new engine. For it's respective slot in history. This game was still fresh. It modernized the aging world war 2 template with 'just' enough storytelling and presentation upgrades to make the air feel fresh again for a breath or two. It's still not all that memorable, and supremely short. Get it for the multiplayer. Which is hopefully still active.

Infinite respawning enemies, who spam grenades at you every 3 seconds. Why should I try and play it realistically when you give me no cover system and infinite enemies magically coming out of a door. The enemies just stream out of that door and never stop coming. I can sit back and snipe them and snipe them and kill again and again and they'll never lessen. Apparently, this TV station is inhabited by the world's population, and they've all turned to a life of terrorism apparently. There's no sense to this scenario. Why are terrorists infinite? Remember back to the good old Rainbow Six days, when a mission would have 6 or 7 tangos, max? The difficulty was in saving the hostage or killing them all without incurring a single casualty on your team. That was what was rewarding, not this nonsense of slaughtering hoards of faceless drones spawning out of a closet. **** you Infinity Ward and the half-track you rode in on. I changed it to normal difficulty and now I can play it without getting the urge to punch my monitor.

And for a game that's supposed to be about modern warfare, there's no rate of fire selector or any ability to customize your weapon accessories. Crysis had those, and that's a game with ****ing giant robot squids. Why wouldn't you allow us to change our rate of fire? Assault rifles and submachine guns all have this feature, and you're trying to portray many of these weapons in the game. Sometimes a situation might call for semi auto mode, like sniping at long range, while another might require full auto mode. Giving players choices is a good thing, it's not something to be afraid of. But no, Infinity Ward doesn't believe in giving the player any power. That's why every door has to be opened by an AI companion, instead of by the player. Remember the good ol days of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, when you could actually open doors yourself? COD4 also introduces new weapon accessories, like red dot and ACOG sights, as well as laser sights and silencers. The only problem is... you can't select which accessories to equip on your weapon. The game just sticks you with whatever random assortment it wants. You have no say in how your personal firearm will be customized. Customization of weapons is not difficult to implement in video games these days. Rainbow Six has done it on multiple iterations, as has Crysis. Customizing your gun generates a feeling of empowerment and individualization, and I simply don't understand why the developer felt that they should keep that away from the player. It's a baffling misstep and a shame, particularly because the weapon accessories themselves are quite well-designed and realized. The red dot sight looks great and feels authentic. The campaign is one tightly scripted sequence after another. While this allows for intense and dramatic moments like watching a helicopter crash and barely avoid killing Captain McMillan, it also leads to severely limited replayability. You know exactly what's going to happen every time because it's all scripted to happen at a certain time and place. So really, there's no reason to go back and replay the experience, as it'll be the same as the first time. While I enjoyed scripted events when they first arrived on the FPS in the form of Half-Life... it's gotten incredibly old. Half-Life came out in 1998. Then we had Medal of Honor Allied Assault, which was made by the team that later formed IW. I thought MoHAA was a great WW2 experience. Then they made Call of Duty, which was also a great scripted game. Then Call of Duty 2, which was more of the same. I figured CoD2 was where it probably needed to end, they'd done all they could. But now they're back, and once again we're treated to linear scripted missions. I've simply had enough. It's time to play in more dynamic combat environments, with more freedom and tactical options and intelligence. The campaign is also amazingly short, clocking in at around 7 to 8 hours. So yea, I'm not sure why everyone called it the best game ever. The presentation looks nice at first, but there's a lot that's retarded, and you'd think they'd have fixed their **** since this is the FOURTH game in the series.

The game feels like a professional mod for Call of Duty 2. The lack of a cover system makes the game feel incredibly out of date (it's also an insult as you can CLEARLY see the enemy taking cover). the amount of enemies you face is utterly ridiculous. and the painfully short length of the singleplayer tops it all off.

There's no point sniping from range because the AIs keep respawning in the same place, and keep throwing grenades in the same spots (PRE-SCRIPTED waypoint BOTS AIS!!!!). To demonstrate just how crap the experience is, most of the time you can just run forward rambo style, camp behind a crate, which doesn't move because its fixed geometry, and let ur buddies do the killing. Since ur in the most forward position the AIs won't respawn, if you hung back a bit they would have .... Special squad mates don't die, shoot captain price in the head and he'll give you a bit of an insult, but thats about it. When you evac, its no point taking your time, due to BS respawn and immortal squad mates, just run through the whole map to the helicopter, and wait for ur buddies to get shot to bits and still survive. In the sniper mission however you have to wait for the copter. The best strat is to camp at the AI respawn points to prevents a BS infinite waves of bots swaping you down. Bullet penetration is the only real physics you get, just about all the objects in game don't move unless its part of some linear scripted sequence. You can only jump over fences when the game lets you. All vehicle missions bits are prescripted, you cant move the vehicles around, you just shoot. Replay the mission and you'll shoot at exactly the same places. Multiplayer is quite addictive I must admit as a run and gun spam fest, can play this stuff for hours. The generals have the advantage though pwning all the noobs with BS perks and guns. Expect a lot of deaths to air strikes and helicopters, and expect a lot of trash talk from guys with self esteem problems. Character customisation would have been nice ... no female solder option either, so don't expect any ladies playing this. The multiplayer is bland and uninspired as well, but it dares to include an idiotic RPG item unlock system as well, ruining any chance of the game being played competitively by new players. Only in graphics does it improve upon the experience furnished by Quakeworld (my multiplayer "benchmark" game), though that's easily counteracted by the unfortunate experience>skill system and a weapon set too focused on low-skill high-damage hitscan weapons, making the game much too campy for my tastes.

3 points for a mediocre single player campaign; 0 for a dysfunctional grind-based instagib multiplayer experience (which has drawn the gaming industry AWAY from the "right direction"); 1 for spawning a WWII-set clone/sequel with a decent zombie-killing mode in it.

It was still a mild disappointment. Production values were fairly mediocre, not what I was expecting from a highly praised big-budget game.

Graphics are ok, but nothing special, even for 2007 (inferior to Arma1, Stalker1 and Crysis which all came out the same year). Some level environments are quite nice, but most others are fairly bland and a bit too linear. Sound design is also nothing special, and lacks oomph.

The story is ok, but the missions are a very mixed bag. Almost all of them suffer from rinse-and-repeat enemy AI waves. Its all scripted, and seems to be aimed at instant gratification console peasants of below average intelligence. The US infantry missions are just a tedious shooting gallery with a shallow narrative tacked on. No matter what instructions you get from your officer, chances are they are not practical for the situation in front of you. If you deviate from the script even slightly, like attempting to flank where your not supposed to, the mission gets stuck or you get punished. At least there are a few missions with more interesting mechanics (like firing canons from a plane). The only decent conventional mission was “All gullied up” - much more atmospheric and better paced. If only the other missions were as good. You only get to do a (highly scripted) sniper shot once in the game, and only at about 150m. The campaign is quite short at 4-8 hours. The only really good thing was the few jokes your squad make now and then.

Open combat mechanics are not fun - arcade and bland. Almost every time you shoot an enemy a new one spawns right behind him, just around a corner. This creates the ludicrous consideration where you may not want to bother shooting someone to avoid dealing with the near infinite replacement enemy spawns. Weapons look nice and have great reload animations, but lack realistic power. Quite a few times the AI would ignore a bullet to the head or multiple rifle shots in the chest. Certain enemies are immune to damage if they are not “supposed” to die at that time - eg: hit a helicopter with anti-tank RPG and nothing happens. This punishes any player initiative. Enemies move without inertia. This makes aiming at them a pain. The AI will tend to just run at you mindlessly. Enemies throw grenades with machine-like accuracy and occasionally seem to be able to track your movement through walls. during training you are instructed to shoot through weak cover, but I encountered many weak surfaces that seemed to be just as effective as concrete. Friendlies are either invincible bullet sponges or get in your way (example: grenade falls at your feet and AI is blocking the only door exit).

Overall CoD4 is a fairly mediocre game (but not quite “bad”). How this became the No.1 FPS franchise seems to have little to do with merit.

The gameplay can easily descend into you picking off incredibly dumb enemies as they respawn and run to the same pre-determined spot over and over, even as their dead bodies pile up to the ceiling while your allies fire inaccurately at them refusing to push forward. When you do push forward the game becomes very difficult as enemies really only pose a threat at close range when you get in the way of their precious pre-programmed spots as you can easily find yourself taking fire from several directions at once, this wouldn't be a problem if friendly NPCs supported you when you advance, but since they don't enjoy getting turned into Swiss cheese. Like I said there are some excellent sequences, but ultimately the game feels like a few very talented people trying to make up for the incompetence of several others, and that is how the game plays, some good sequences trying to make up for some awful gameplay. how the hell is this game rated so highly ... totally dull, linear dross .... multiplayer felt so restricted and cramped, so much so that i found it more advantageous to stay put in some green house waiting for some noob to run around and blast em.Compare the multiplayer to battlefield 2, where you feel part of a team ,you have a few square miles of landscape in which to plot and develop how the hell is this game rated so highly ... totally dull, linear dross .... multiplayer felt so restricted and cramped, so much so that i found it more advantageous to stay put in some green house waiting for some noob to run around and blast em.Compare the multiplayer to battlefield 2, where you feel part of a team ,you have a few square miles of landscape in which to plot and develop some team tactics, I have played battlefield for years and had a great time ... played cod 4 for about a couple of weeks and boy was i bored how can anyone rate this game highly, even in the single player mode I could just sit down and allow my squad to do most of the arse kicking. I really worry about who rates games these days ... a score of over 90 i always thought of as an all time classic ... this is most definitely not ... an easily forgettable, linear, hectic, same old run of the mill war game that looks good ... anyone else feel that most game designers are just milking us.... try and think back through your gaming life history all those special experiences that you and your console or pc had together ... would this even dare to share the same shelf space ...arghhhh I hate this game. Played single-player. Worst single-player game that I've played in a long time. Infinite enemy spawn? Really? And how do you get that commander guy to shut up - I don't want to do that, get lost! Basically, for single player there is very little interesting. The graphics are pretty, but the gameplay is really annoying, for many, many reasons. The story is boring. It's a Borrrring Single Player for those of us who like a little tactics in our FPS. COD4 does have great graphics and the scripted set pieces are some of the best, but I don't just want to watch an action movie. I want to be able to scope out an area and decide what kind of approach to take and what gear to equip and where to find cover and when to strike and when to retreat. This FPS leads you around to waypoints where you shoot fish in a barrel and wait for someone to tell you to move on to the next scripted sequence. Yawn! Let the console-couch-potatoes enjoy the ride. This game is terribly addicting but offers nothing new at all to pc FPS. Multiplayer is pretty much another counter-strike style action fps. I play this game all the time only because multiplayer TDM is fun and it took counter-strike's spot. Still waiting for an FPS that offers much much more the just open fields (BF2) and pretty graphics (COD4). This game sucks compared to all the other CoD's. I don't understand why people call this game the greatest Call of Duty ever. It's not! The campaign sucks and the multiplayer is boring with little killstreaks and perks. Not to mention the thosuands of hackers that infest the game.
Not worth the money, get MW2 or Black Ops instead.

I'm sorry folks but this game is entirely overrated. People like to claim that this was the last good Call of Duty, when in fact this is not a very good game. My main beef is with the mutliplayer. In all reality, the singleplayer is great, and typically is with any Call of Duty game, but that's not why you buy COD. You buy COD for multiplayer, and this games multiplayer is terrible. IfI'm sorry folks but this game is entirely overrated. If it's not some kiddies with ACOG snipers tryharding, it's really bad sounding and feeling guns. The dedicated server system is trash in comparison to Black Ops or World at War. You are also stuck with only three killstreaks, in comparison to the newer games. The maps aren't too bad, and the graphics are standard among Call of Duty games, but I just don't like the feel of the multiplayer. This game is overrated, and even MW3 of all the COD games is better than this. Expand

The single player campaign serves as a really nice mod for COD2 (graphics really haven't improved since), but come on asking full price for the same old tired linear gameplay and contrived story? MP is a little better but still suffers from being overly arcadey.

Another mindless corridor shooter. Ridiculously short, no interaction with your squadmates. Doors can't be opened, windows that can't be broken. 30 cm high fences that you can't climb over. Ridiculously scripted, mindless AI. Infinite enemy spawning until you move one more foot. The great graphics can't save this one. Utterly disappointing.

Disgustingly overrated, yet another boring first person shooter with no attempt whatsoever in improving gameplay, it feels almost like the first one with better graphics and different models. I would be kicking myself if Crysis didn't come out, as it would mean that I upgraded my computer just for DOD4. If you are a beginner for shooters? Then this might be an option, but if Disgustingly overrated, yet another boring first person shooter with no attempt whatsoever in improving gameplay, it feels almost like the first one with better graphics and different models. "Nice" features: Fairly flashy graphics, bullet - wall penetration system (wow, valve did that with counter strike 10 years ago). Multiplayer is fun for the first few plays, so I guess that might be why I gave it a 2 instead of a 0. Expand

A beautifully crafted first-person shooter, but without a compelling context. How much does that matter? To me, a little. Not a lot, but it nags. [Dec 2007, p.73]

Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available.
  3. It’s absolutely relentless in its assault on the senses and never lets up until the last trigger has been squeezed. The multiplayer is even better, with the perks and weapon upgrades acting as a balance to the lack of vehicles.
