I played BL2 a lot of times, and lately with mods that let me run faster and jump higher, making the backtracking much easier, so TPS' mechanics was familiar, but with the welcome stop-the-flying-and-land ability. There is a modest amount of backtracking and ton of edges and invisible walls that hinder most direct route. Sometimes I was caught up in slightly tilted surfaces and some small steps my character couldn't step over. The game was quite stable but hung a few times until my internet connection returned. At first I thought the butt-slam and the huge amount of elemental barrels will be fantastic, but 90% of my deaths were caused by those barrels and unwanted slams around them. Otherwise, most boss battles felt easier. I found a few bugged challenges and some quite evil ones. I'm not really satisfied with the loot quality in TPS; since it has a bigger pool for the random loot to chose from, It becomes even less likely you get a better version of your current favorite weapon. I got a nice sniper rifle at level 12 and had to retain it till level 23 to get the next better with the same elemental damage. The grinder is a nice addition but still random enough and due to the backpack limit, you'll end up hoarding the to-be-grinded weapons much longer than before. The legendary drop rate seems to be lower as well. The mouse look felt a bit strange, quantized, so targeting distant enemies was difficult due to large jumps even for the slightest mouse movements. The voiceover is good and the character talkback is a good addition, but since I'm not familiar with the Australian word jokes and style, It wasn't as funny for me as BL2. The location and background music is not memorable at all sadly. Some say one shouldn't consider the price as a factor int the score, which I agree with if the said game is really good, otherwise you'll feel regret about your impatience till a sale. I would say, this is what a 90s expansion packs looked like; almost an entire standalone game but still overshadowed by the main game. Which is sad because I'm sure a lot of design and development effort went into it. I'm not sure if I'll buy any of the DLCs on this one. Expand

The problem with Borderlands goes back to the original game and the recipe that all the teams have stuck with TOO LONG. The combat (ITSELF) is NOT interesting. Finding new and better guns IS Interesting for a bit but that dies as you reach the level cap. The character builds are NOT interesting. So what are we playing for? It has to be the STORY. Finding new and better guns IS Interesting for a bit but that dies as you reach the level cap. The character builds are NOT interesting. So what are we playing for? It has to be the STORY. And here stands the PROBLEM. The story right through Borderlands (ALL THREE BIG ONES) is BAD! Look what happened to all the DLC for Borderlands 2 which consists basically of terrible 'jokes' and 'memes' rather than anything serious! All the DLCs were TERRIBLE in all caps. Really dreadful. So what we have here is the excruciatingly boring and unfunny Borderlands story again. More of the same. I think the writers don't really understand comedy or qualify as comedic writers. Comedy is used by people to alleviate existential but real PAIN. The Borderlands world is a cell shaded comic book game world where death and 'suffering simply can't be taken seriously. There is no need in such a world for extra comedy. Instead there is a need for some 'SERIOUS' themes to big this funny world some 'believable' GRAVITY. This game was pretty much doomed to fail because 2K has been showing their ignorance by giving us lots and lots of REALLY terrible DLC for BL2. This game is just more of the same. Definitely don't buy it now or the season pass. Gearbox and 2K do not deserve your faith. If previous DLC is anything to go by the DLC for this will be even worse. I think 2K Australia did OK with this but it's hard to make a truly good game where the men at the top have not diagnosed where their franchise is lacking: IT'S THE WRITING. It needs a TON of weight to balance out the excess of light-hearted 'comedy'. MORE GRAVITY not less.

This is Borderlands, to the core, and a great credit to the franchise.

Low gravity combat, lasers, cryo effects, both new and re-imagined enemies, and a metric crap ton of that classic Borderlands humor we have come to love so much. Love the new characters, and ... you can play as Claptrap. Yeah ... lol. I enjoy seeing the story leading up to BL2, and some of the side mission stories

I enjoy seeing the story leading up to BL2, and some of the side mission stories are cool as well. Seeing Jack be ... nice. The birth of the robot army. But, I will stop there, no spoilers.

As I write this, I see a small flood of spam in the reviews, people hating on the game for various reasons. Everyone is most definitely entitled to their opinions, but a lot of what I am reading makes no sense. This is NOT a DLC or expansion, it's a full on game in it's own right.

People saying the humor is lacking, really? Have they actually played it? The humor is spot on for the BL series. Complaining that some weapon designs and textures were the same as in BL2. Well of course it is, it takes place right before BL2.

People complaining about the $60 price tag, and while I am have been a long time critic of overpriced games, there is most defiantly $60 worth of game here. If you go for the full Borderlands experience, it's going to take you dozens of hours to complete, per character. Like all of the other BL games, we have coop as well. So I am not sure what people are complaining about.

Oh well, I guess some people just really like to complain. They hate it when you change something, they hate it when you leave it the same, sometimes you just can't win. Borderlands have become one of the largest, most popular, and most recognized franchises in the gaming industry. So it's expected to attract some hate.

Rest assured, it's unwarranted. If you truly enjoy Borderlands, then you will enjoy The Pre-Sequel.

None-the-less borderlands is still a great formula and the gameplay is hella fun and interesting. I will say, however, if you didn't like the past Borderlands, this game will do nothing to dissuade you. It has a new world with new areas and is honestly only a few hours longer than Tiny Tinas DLC in Borderlands 2. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Couldn't play this game for more than a half hour.

Let's start from the beginning. As a Big fan of BL and BL2, I had hope for this game, and gave it an open-mind. Through some Gearbox discussion, I heard about this game way back when, and was excited for it. I thought it would be fun.

From the beginning, before the game starts, the famous "skag scene" for this game was less than exciting. In the previous titles, the opening scene with a skag always set the beginning of the game in my opinion, and that scene was decent in BL2, but was inadequate in this title. You're looking at the skag, then the skag has bandits around it, that's the opening.

The start of gameplay shows you meeting ClapTrap, but not even that lasts the time it did in previous titles. The base is immediately under attack, ClapTrap tosses you a kit, you already have a gun for some reason, and you're in battle within a couple minute. There's no entrance whatsoever. No storyline, just you getting gear and fighting.

Oh, then you get to fight FOR the **** that took over Hyperion. I understand this is before the second game, and he hasn't quite taken over yet. It is still a great big middle finger to the player if they've followed the story line of the second game.

You're then launched onto the moon, where you meet the first quest giver there. You're then asked to travel without air and unlock a locked building. This is where I happen to run across those new...geo-lizard things, died a few times in front of that door because of my noob weapons, finally cleared it out long enough to get inside and get an Oxygen mask.

Then after that you're asked to go kill someone. Simple enough right? Wrong. On the way there, you are required to fight several enemies without any cover, all you get to do is jump around avoiding fire, and trying to ground-pound, then running and refilling your oxygen while being shot at.

When I finally reached the guy you have to kill, I gave up after several deaths, realizing I couldn't defeat him with the new mechanics, as well as the fact he has baddies spawning all over, is constantly making the ground electrified, and has an overpowered weapon.

That's the first 30 minutes (or more) of game play, from my perspective.

Some people have been calling it lazy, which I certainly can't disagree with.

That being said, the game is still really fun. The new characters are really cool, the story still has its snarky dialogue and oddball missions, and the new items/weapons they added are fun. It's not a short game--and of course you have TVHM (they're version of game-plus)--and DLCs are on the way, so I don't at all feel cheated by it.

In conclusion, don't get too scared with all the negative reviews and try to be objective. If you enjoyed Borderlands 2 and don't feel like it bored you easily, then you'll really enjoy this game; if you're looking for something entirely new for the series, then you might want to avoid it.

While the core gameplay varies little from its predecessor, it brings enough to the table for newcomers and long time fans to enjoy. The plot fills the gap between the first two games well and I personally found it very interesting.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has to be some of the best fun I've had in a long while with videogames; the mechanics seem to be better polished & the change of scenery from leaving Pandora is visually appealing even with the same graphics as BL:2.

There are good games, there are fun games and there are bad games. This is a fun game. If you actually spend time and do other things than the main story missions, you get a lot more of the creativity that 2K has put into the game. And a lot of it is great and humorous. And a lot of it is great and humorous. The fact that it is VERY 'Aussie' is fun, as it makes an opportunity to be ironic about something else. But most of this is found in the optional parts of the game. Which is good, as it doesn't affect the main storyline, which makes a lot of things clearer, but doesn't explain why the plot twist happened in the first place, what the morale of those causing it is. These are questions that are maybe already told in the 2nd game, or via the ECHO logs, but that I've forgotten or missed. It would still be a nice to get the other perspective as well. But at least you get an ENTIRE game with Jack being the boss, one of the best villains (well, 'hero' during this game) in the last couple of years. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel manages to tell the missing part of the story between 1 and 2 in a very good way and good enough to make you sympathetic with Jack and why Borderlands 2's story is how it is. And FINALLY your controllable character is actually a part of many of the dialogues happening throughout the game, with additional punch-lines/monologues.

The gameplay is the same as Borderlands 2, but does a very good job at making the gravity of the moon and the oxygen/O2 Kits a BIG part of the game and not just a one time gimmick. There are very few games that have managed to put in things like these on an already existing game, but 2K has done it well. Butt stomping enemies and doing platforming while combining the extra boost given by using oxygen and butt stomping, was used a lot during my playthrough of the game.

You never get flooded with quests, like you get in Borderlands 2 and most of the maps are decently sized so that getting to places usually didn't take that long. Throughout the 24 hours I spent doing almost every quest, my experience of the game has totally justified the pricetag. The story, gameplay and loads of weapons and loot makes up for one of the most enjoyable games I've played this year.

Picking the correct class seems very important in the game, as it might make or break your enjoyment of the gameplay. The difficulty of the start and endgame seems to vary on which class you pick, some start off with very powerful traits and some start off slow but get very powerful at the end.

Now to how 'this game should've been DLC'. No, it should not have been. 20+ hours for a DLC? Are you nuts? We are then going into expansion territory, which is more or less exclusively in MMORPGs and a thing of the past. The only part that could have changed is the price tag. But the difference between Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel is enough to keep the price tag up. I have enjoyed Borderlands The Pre-Sequel more than what I have with Borderlands 2 and all its DLC. If you're judging the game due to its price, then you have nothing to say here.

8.0 max - Lacks decisive constant action. Can be a walk in the vastness and emptiness of space - very pretty but it should be relentless and scary too if it really wants to make a step forward. Nothing new except for Boganella gun design and moderate anit-grav environment. Fairly entertaining. Make it hard if you turn off map and auto-aim. Also better for HC gamers like me.

There are a few more faults in the game but they all are minor, and seem like they will be an easy fix in any patches that are released. The game itself is fantastic. The game play is smooth, it will run well on most machines, as a proud owner of a toaster I have had bad experiences with that sort of thing, but I had absolutely no lag whatsoever from this game. The storyline is even more emphasized than it was in borderlands two, including one of the most exciting game endings I have played recently, minus The Last of Us. And probably the best of all is how mobile you feel in the combat situations, as well as how the combat has taken on a larger 3D aspect, since you can jump over people and shoot down on them and they can do the same to you. I would honestly say that this is by far the best borderlands game in all ways except for the minor glitches. I would also say it is one of my top games that I have recently experienced, and I think it deserves much higher than a 6.7 rating. Expand

OK, to start off, the people who are complaining in the negative reviews are expecting this game to be as polished and as good as Borderlands 2 was, now I agree that they did a bit of a lazy job in certain areas, but most of the development was done by one of their secondary studios(? idk what to call it, as I don't want to look it up right now), it is an amazing job considering that much.OK, to start off, the people who are complaining in the negative reviews are expecting this game to be as polished and as good as Borderlands 2 was, now I agree that they did a bit of a lazy job in certain areas, but most of the development was done by one of their secondary studios(? idk what to call it, as I don't want to look it up right now), it is an amazing job considering that much. Now the game is full of bugs, glitches and a lot of issues which are hopefully fixed soon, the glitches are numerous and most of them deal with the new freedom of movement and the overall ability to unintentionally suicide, and the lower gravity and the fact that the enemies can slam you off the edge of a cliff if you are on a raised area and force you to have to respawn is definitely a problem.

Another thing people are complaining about is that the game is too similar to Borderlands 2.... which is a stupid thing to say as Borderlands 2 cemented what it means to be a Borderlands game, and completely separated themselves from the rest of the fps games on the market today, so if you want something that is different from Borderlands 2 in some way that doesn't involve reduced gravity and cryo-weapons, then you should look elsewhere.

Now this isn't a true sequel to any game overall, if it had been released as Borderlands 2 and then if they released Borderlands 2 as 3 instead, this game would be getting a lot better reviews, but since it just fills in a gap and helps setup the basis for the true sequel to the series that will be Borderlands 3, don't expect too much as it doesn't really have all that much room for adding in story.

Now onto the review of the game as it is prior to dlc (not counting the pre-order bonus). The gameplay is very similar to Borderlands 2, with reduced gravity, O2 kits replacing relics, Laser weapons replacing E-tech, and Cryo weapons replacing slag weapons. A lot of the legendary weapons are currently back from Borderlands 1 and 2, and there are a few which are simply renamed and slightly altered from Borderlands 2 (Cryophobia and Fatale for example).

The raid boss is just a redux of the final boss fight with more hp, shields and a bit stronger in general, so don't expect a whole lot from that. Head customizations are back, but are a bit more scarce as only a few missions give them as rewards, one is obtained from getting level 5 badass rank, and the rest are random drops from boss fights, so a little annoying to obtain.

The legendary items in general have a problem with some of them only being obtainable from one time unique enemy spawns, though gearbox is looking into making the enemies that you can only fight once respawn randomly, or in the case of a boss, making it so you can fight them again.

There are two secret bosses, one of which requires a bit of platforming, which is a bit of a pain as you have to do it every time you want to kill him for the loot. The other secret boss is simple to get to, just a bit of exploration and you will come across him.

Moving to the characters, are pretty balanced in terms of damage and survivability, with the current exception of Nisha having her class mods coding being a bit buggy and causing her to be overpowered right now, as she can kill bosses in mere seconds, and the raid boss in under 2 or 3 mins (mostly because of it being a fight with stages so it takes a bit for it to change.

The boss fights are each unique and take advantage of the improved AI, and lower gravity. As far as normal enemies go, they still have a bit of a tendency to run from you when you enter ffyl, which makes it irritating, also there are a lot of enemies that will jump in front of the enemy you are about to kill in ffyl, and cause you to die if you aren't using a laser weapon (they pierce enemies).

Overall the game is not as done as Borderlands 2 was, but that could be due to Borderlands 2 being a full sequel done by the main company (and not a satellite studio of theirs) and that an almost 3 year gap between Borderlands 1 and 2, as well as less freedom than in the pre-sequel so not nearly as many glitches coming from movement. But the game is still good and, in my opinion, better than a lot of games out on the market for the same price. Despite a few imbalances and unique loot drops that are only available once right now, the game is pretty damn good, the movement is fun, the combat is also fun, and the jokes and references, which are corny are still kind of fun.

Good game, not as great as Borderlands 2, but still a good game, and worth taking a look at, especially if they fix the current bugs and allow for unique enemy respawns, add a good amount of campaign dlc, and so forth.

Why was this trash not improved?! Besides this, it is still a fun game that keeps the old formula which doesn't need much tweaking.

The only part I wasn't so happy about is that you cannot really play the game by only following the main storyline, because your character will eventually hit a difficulty wall with enemies with a level "way higher" than yours and also bosses that cannot be defeated until you level up... turning playing into grinding if you want to make your way through the end.

I could never get into Borderlands. It was a grindathon with sick, gross out humour. I don't particularly see an enemy NPC wandering around and chanting Hamlet as the funniest thing since Archer. I don't particularly see an enemy NPC wandering around and chanting Hamlet as the funniest thing since Archer. I just wasn't a fan. The impression I got from the prior two was of being clearly aimed at a very young audience who wanted to know what it was like to play 'adult' games. Essentially, the Call of Duty audience. Except it's an even better appeal to them with the addition of Saturday morning cartoon colours and gross out humour.

So I was surprised when I ended up liking The Pre-Sequel.

It doesn't bother with gross out humour. Let me get that out of the way. There are no psychos in this, and many of the characters, both supporting cast and enemies alike, are endearing. It's an exceedingly Commonwealth-y experience. And in being so, its humour can stand up there with some of the best. It's the first time I laughed at anything in a Borderlands game.

The platforming, zero gravity antics, actually intelligent (which ranges from Commonwealth low brow to nerdy) humour, exploration, and laser guns did much to help the franchise grow on me. I'm not going to turn around and like the prior games because they don't have any of those things.

But The Pre-Sequel? This I can play.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a weird thing. It's a Borderlands game for people who really didn't like Borderlands. For those who felt it was too psychotic, gross out, and just bloody childish. For those who're simply too smart to be entertained by gore and potty humour. Comparing the two is like comparing Duke Nukem and Arnold Rimmer, Rush Limbaugh with Stephen Fry, or a doody joke with a physics joke.

Yes, it's really that stark of a difference. I'm amazed by it. I had fun with the setting, the writing, and the story! I was engaged by it. I know, I'm as shocked as anyone. This could never have happened with any other Borderlands game. I even appreciated the references (how they've turned Athena into a rhymingly named reference to a certain Warrior Princess, for example).

See, there's a difference between compulsion and engagement.

With a compulsive game, you're counting on low functioning types who're easily addicted. The usual extroverted subjects who like doody jokes with their gambling. That... doesn't work for me. It's the same reason why World of Warcraft never worked for me. The attempt to addict me with grind combined with some of the most god awful, immature 'humour' I've ever had the misfortune of being exposed to didn't do anything to engage me.

Engagement works. I want a Universe I can appreciate, and a story that leaves me wondering how it's going to turn out. I want some mystery, some ambiguity, and I want questions to answer. The Pre-Sequel even had proper moral ambiguity in that it keeps you guessing as to just which side is the most ethical and just. Who, precisely, is doing the 'right thing.' There were many times where I felt I was being heroic, and many others where I felt dastardly. It's a more three dimensional experience than the usual good versus evil rot the video game industry trots out.

I liked it. I actually liked it. The gunplay is average, as before. The grind is dull, as before. But everything else about it that they added was absolutely marvellous and a joy to behold.

I think that 2K Oz should be given their own IP to develop, and they should be allowed to be as intelligent and Commonwealth-y with it as they want. After Pre-Sequel. I genuinely believe they've earned that right. They took Borderlands and turned it into an experience that could be appreciated by an audience other than low functioning, xenophobic, dribbling idiots.

That's a work of dark magic, that is. Some real voodoo going on there.

So, the long and the short of it? If the xenophobia, gross out humour, and general idiocy of Borderlands 2 got to you too much to be able to enjoy it? You may find something here. I'm actually thankful that there are no psychos on the moon.

First off, it's good to get out of the way that 2K Australia are trying WAAY too hard to make Borderlands 2. This is clear as the UI has barely changed, and the game structure less so. Heck, even the bloody opening FMV has the same structure as BL" - the characters are on their way to somewhere when their vechile is ambushed, prompting a reel of the characters' names and abilities. It also ends with the four of them blasting off agaaaiiiinnnn! Barely any of the gameplay mechanics have changed. There's an Oxygen meter which allows you to double-jump, but it adds little tothe expreience other than that it's fun to mess about with. I can't understate just how many assets from BL2 have been recycled - the gameplay, story and world structure really are a carbon copy of BL2.
It's also clear that inferior writers found themselves under great pressure to be as funny as their Gearbox counterparts. Most of the humour comes off as random, or as dank meme material, rather than being genuinely funny, as opposed to BL2. One of your first allies' defining character traits is being a lesbian with an Aussie accent. There are moments when it's funny - a lot of moments - but those moments are outnumbered in frequency by the number of times the game tries to emulate the Borderlands sense of humour and fails. And it's sad to admit that.

That said, it's really not all bad. Most of what you loved from BL2 is back - that oh-so-perfect gunplay is still kicking and in top form. The guns are as interesting as ever, multiplayer is as great as ever, and as 2K loves to proclaim, you do indeed get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of content. The fanservice here is top-notch - at least 2K Australia knew of one surefire way to please fans, eh? Characters such as Mad Moxxi and Handsome Jack return, and - in what is potentially one of the best pieces of fanservice outside of Smash Bros. - you can play as Claptrap. Speaking of which, I'm liking a lot of the playable characters. They can feel a little gimmicky but their execution in-game is well-done.

Elpis, a moon orbiting Pandora, is an awesome setting, by the way. The locales look really pretty, and it's the perfect setting for focusing on how Handsome Jack came to be the big bad which he was in Borderlands 2. It's nice that the Borderlands universe is expanded on in this way. I WILL say, however, that some of the new enemy designs are remarkably lazy. They're basically redisgned adversaries which fit into the exact same archetypes from before: karrogs are the new skags, and skavs are the new bandits of Elpis. It makes me wonder if 2K Australia couldn't have found a better use for these new enemies, or at least a more interesting context to insert them into rather than so obviously being fodder enemies.

If it sounds like there's more bad than good in the Pre-Sequel, there isn't, I trust you. It's just that nearly everything good I could say about this game has already been said about BL2, and if you're reading this review you've most likely checked out BL2 before in some way, so you know what to expect. It's more of the same, this time made by people who are trying too hard to be something they aren't; they aren't as funny or original as the team behind Borderlands 1 & 2. But more of the same, at least in small doses, doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you enjoyed any other Borderlands game, you're still guaranteed a good time here as far as I'm concerned; just think of it as being more like a new entry in the vein of the Pokémon or Bayonetta series, which which deliver more of what worked, rather than in the vein of BL2, which improved so vastly upon the Borderlands formula. It would seem that the Pre-Sequel pkays victim to BL2's success. Or maybe think of the Pre-Sequel as an expansion pack, a very large DLC for BL 2 - which perhaps would have made it more well-received.

Bland. This is coming from someone who has spent almost 5000 hours in BL1 and 2. Both BL1 and 2 are time warps for me and still are. Any time I sit in front of either one, when I look away from my computer it is all of a sudden 3 hours later. TPS feels more like a chore than anything else and I was only able to endure up to level 13. I can't seem to play any longer than 30 minutes atBland. I can't seem to play any longer than 30 minutes at a time without getting completely bored out of my mind.

    Cons:
The character primary skills are not very flashy like they were in BL2 and really don't do anything that you wouldn't be able to do without them anyway. The other skills in the tree are merely numeric multipliers for the most part and provide nothing as far as game changers to look forward to. The scenery is bland. There is way too much space between points of interest. The buggy ends up in the lava more times that not, so it is very difficult to open up. The O2 mechanic feels like a hinderance giving you a time limit when searching for hidden chests. Jack is not funny at all, which is very disappointing. The old vault hunters feel very out of place. The enemies all seem the same and are clearly missing the variety I'm use to in BL2 or even BL1. There are no Goliaths, constructors, loaders, psychos, nomads or any of that and are all just guys that run around with helmets and shoot, very boring.

    Pros:
Gunplay is good because it is a built in mechanic that they couldn't mess up really. The double jump mechanic is interesting.

If you want to see how Jack became the depraved person from Borderlands 2 this game is for you. The game is solid and familiar not breaking new ground but doing it's own thing very well.

My few gripes would be the level design later in the game is tedious bordering on atrocious. Just a lot harder to figure out where the game wants you to go than it should be. There were a few small glitches as well such as enemies being able to shoot me through walls at certain points as well as one ramp that wouldn't lower until I exited the game and reloaded it which kept me from advancing. I also had one quest that failed on me after reloading the game even though it wasn't time based and I had to restart it. None of these are game breaking and most are simply anoying for the brief periods they happened but at the time of writing this the game has been out for years and these have gone unfixed which is a shame.

The Linux build overall was pretty decent. I had no crashes at all. The performance was alright but not great. The game only utilizes one CPU core on Linux which makes it very CPU limited. My frame rate was usually 80+ at 1080P with max settings and FXAA but it did have dips into the 40's every so often. Officially AMD GPUs aren't even supported on the Linux version so I guess it could be worse.

Despite the quirks and issues the game is a lot of fun and retains the good gameplay that other Borderlands have had. I recommend it to Borderlands fans specifically but FPS fans in general should enjoy it.

    My system I used:

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X | Mesa 18.1 | Samsung 850 Evo 250GB | Solus 3 | Kernel 4.16.14-75.current

I rarely, if ever, post reviews - but for this game I felt I should - given all the negative comments (nonsense) about how it is just "DLC". (FYI, after 7 hours, I'm just now reaching the main city - exact same as BL1 or BL2 would have handled it, and the story is just starting).

I played BL1 through twice, BL2 through twice, and now I am enjoying BL3. This is NOT DLC. I'm assuming, at this point, that anyone who states it is DLC simply never played BL1 and moved to BL2. This is the Borderlands universe, the story, and this game fits it well - it is literally the next installment of the Borderlands saga.

I remember when BL2 came out, I felt it was "DLC" at first (being a noob, as we all were transitioning from BL1 to BL2), because it was the same thing - vault hunting, same graphics, just different characters, classes, and story. Then I realized - OF COURSE IT LOOKS THE SAME - it's a cohesive universe and that's why any fan of Borderlands plays borderlands. I think we'd all hate it if it became something else.

Borderlands 3 (pre-sequel) is very well done, expansive, engaging, and an excellent third addition to the story. It is to perceive this as "dlc" - only the entitled-minded would believe such a thing. I findi it oddly humorous that people buy the third game in a series and expect it NOT to be the third game in a series. Do we complain that book 3 of The Lord of the Rings is set in exactly the same universe as book 2 of the trilogy? Of course not.

If you are a Borderlands fan, please, stop reading nonsense posts and buy the game - enjoy it for what it is - another story set in a cohesive universe. BL3 has new heroes, new story, new location, same universe, and uses previous installment heroes to help tell the story - umm, that's EXACTLY what BL2 did, except the different location :) There is no cash grab here, there is no "sell DLC as a game" - this is BL3, plain and simple.

I almost didn't buy the game, even though I am definitely a Borderlands fan, because of all the BS posts. But, then I decided to see for myself, and I am very happy I did. I hope this installment doesn't suffer from the negative posts by (likely) those who just don't get what Borderlands is - it's a story, let's let it be just that - a great story. I remember my initial disappointment with BL2 - "where the hell are the aliens?!?"?. But once I let that go, BL2 became a great game on its own - let's let this become the great game it can be, by letting it evolve story-wise, instead of just "cosmetic wise".

Also I went into this game expecting a back story of Jack and got a bit more. This game is harder than the other two and the humor is still there and everywhere I look I see some sort of reference for example, the new psycho's weapons are from tron. The Australian accents are placed about rather randomly a lot of characters have them but they are necessarily annoying rather hard to understand at times.
I will admit this game isn't worth $60 but it most certainly is much larger than an expansion and carries much more than the average game.
So to sum it all up the game is a great addition to the BL franchise and is a bit of a challenge and takes a lot of thinking because of the low gravity. I would recommend buying it for $50 or less as long as you don't mind a challenge and enjoy and I mean enjoy the BL franchise.

Borderlands Presequel... ¿Valdrá la pena comprarlo?
    +Historia Buena y Chistosa

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel tells the story of how Handsome Jack progressed from being a corporate lackey to becoming the villain we know in Borderlands 2. It’s not a journey I asked to take, but since it’s here, I played it and had a good time – but with no camraderie, no Angel, minimal Claptraps, and little environment variety, much of the charm is missing. Gameplay is the same as previous games in the franchise, but now with oxygen tanks and low gravity. Worth a purchase for fans of the series and its co-op loot-and-shoot gameplay (which is as good as ever). New-comers to the franchise should look at Borderlands 2 instead; it is the better game.
Total size installed on my hard-drive (base game + Season Pass): 10.4 GB

The story tells the tale of Athena, an assassin encountered in the first Borderlands game, and how she was employed by Jack to save Pandora’s moon from the evil Captain Zarpedon who has taken over the Helios space station and is firing the station’s laser at the moon to destroy it because reasons (whew, that was mouthful). Zarpedon actually does have reasons, and you can find some Echoes lying around that tell more of her story; she’s actually a really interesting character.

But like so many of the characters in the Pre-Sequel, she’s barely there. Mordecai and Brick only appear in cut-scenes, while Roland and Lilith stand around in the Up Over Bar doing nothing (with two lines of dialogue apiece when clicked upon). Tiny Tina provides some voice-over in True Vault Hunter mode, but otherwise only has one or two lines. Jack tells jokes constantly, but is never funny – not even in a “I’m ashamed of laughing but I’m laughing anyway” approach. And apparently it’s impossible to have a Borderlands game without Moxxi or Crazy Earl. Marcus is NOT present, but his vending machines are everywhere, even in the most unlikely of places. In place of Scooter is Janey Springs, and she is a bright, cheerful addition to a cast that is frequently far too glum. Unfortunately, the Pre-Sequel’s attempts at fun and funny is mostly meh.

The areas feel smaller. Unlike Borderlands 2, which featured a great variety of environments, the Pre-Sequel features one style of terrain – the rocky surface of Pandora’s moon – and any variety happens in the in-door levels. The low-gravity was fun, and allowed for some really creative jumping puzzles. The oxygen requirement was limiting, though. It discouraged random exploration, because I was frequently checking my air amount to make sure I didn’t run out. This concern is somewhat mitigated by plentiful air pockets in every level, but still annoying. Most enemies are recycled from other games (and re-spawn very quickly). Now we have Torks instead of Skags, and they’re animated differently, but their function and hitpoints feel the same. There are fewer bosses than in previous Borderlands games, but the final boss is awesome, taking place in more old Eridian ruins. Design and atmosphere is great, even if it was easy to slice through all the enemies (I finished my first run at Level 26).

As in previous Borderlands games, there are tons of things to loot, but few of them are useful. All the beam weapons are OP; they even helped me to wipe out the Zarpedon boss in less than five minutes – SOLO. Find one (or more!), organize your build around it, and proceed to plow through enemies. A nice addition to the gameplay is the ground-slam. Suddenly, facing hordes of creatures doesn’t seem like a fruitless endeavor. Jump, boost to a greater height (which uses oxygen!), then slam back into the ground for area-of-effect damage. The slam can be customized and upgraded like everything else. I found myself avoiding fire-based elemental weapons because fire needs an atmosphere in order to burn – making their use situational at best. Ice weapons + ground-slam (which shatters frozen enemies) was a more than viable substitute.

At the heart of any Borderlands game is the co-operative experience, and that is as good as ever. Getting four people together to save Pandora’s moon makes for a great time, with easy drop-in, drop-out. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is easily the lesser game of the trilogy, but it’ll scratch that loot-and-shoot itch. Recommended if you’ve just got to have more Borderlands.

    On DLC:
    - Two character classes, Handsome Jack and the Baroness. Seriously, Gearbox, stop cutting character classes out of the game to sell for an extra $10 apiece. Sheesh.
    - The Holodome Onslaught adds 10 more character levels and holographic horde mode. Having the character levels is nice, but the rest is like the holographic simulator in the Pinnacle Station DLC for the first Mass Effect. Remember that DLC? That’s right, no one does.
    - Claptastic Voyage is a great piece of story DLC – IF YOU ARE A FAN OF CLAPTRAP (I am, kind of. Depends on my mood). Otherwise, prepare to be annoyed in a big way.

An interquel that reuses the engine and assets of Borderlands 2, Pre-Sequel nonetheless manages to reinvent the series tried-and-true, shoot, loot, rinse and repeat gameplay primarily by the introduction of low gravity- moving around on Elpis and the Helios spacestation is infinately easier then being stuck in Pandoran gravity. It brings to mind the low-gravity mutator of Unreal Tournament. Combat additions of cryo-element weapons and lasers are also welcome. I had a lot of fun as Athena the Gladiator, whose elemental tree gives her a hefty punch and whose Aspis denies a huge percentage of incoming damage, giving her incredible survivablity that the entirety of the Borderlands 2 cast lacked- most egregiously Salvador, who in the course of playing I spent an inordinate amount of time as with my face in the dirt waiting to be revived. I had a chance to sample the other characters, including Doppleganger Jack and Aurelia but most notably Wilhelm the Enforcer, whose autonomous drones are a big help in combat. The game is well-written for what it is, though if you are bothered by an excess of memes and references then it will rub you in much the same uncomfortable way that BL2 did. The combat in pre-sequel, I would say, the most refined in the series, and actually feels reasonably balanced, but the level design leaves much to be desired- the mazelike decks of Helios station in particular left me dazed and vexed, and had I not had my friends to guide me I would surely have needed to look at a guide to find my way around. The moon also has its share of navigational difficulties, with twisting, identical-looking crags and instant-death lava pits. For the geographically challenged player like myself, Pre-Sequel can be very annoying, but once you can actually find the battle, you'll have a lot of fun. The DLCs, few as they are, are solid- the holodome providing some of the most dynamic arena battles of the franchise, and Claptastic Voyage offering excellent music and asthetics, as well as a very epic final boss and game changing "glitched" guns. Pre-Sequel is a solid continuation for the series and also I think, a good entrypoint to the franchise for newcomers. I'm expecting more improvements in future entries. Expand

To be honest is that such a bad thing? This game should not be bashed for knowing its own identity. So yes borderlands the presequel plays like its game of the year predecessor with a few extra things. You get two types of vehicles with different loadouts. Gun battles have been taken from the ground to in the air in zero gravity where you can slam down on opponent's.(simultaneously shoot them in the face if you please) The presequel also boasts the best cast of vault hunters the franchise has ever had. Each character represents a different angle to the story. The fact that each character reacts slightly differently to dialogue brings a tonal change to the story. Athena is clearly the main character because to story is told through her, so theres a little more narrative when playing as athena. Claptrap brings a certain darkness and sadness to the story especially at the end of "claptraps claptastic voyage" Wilhelm and Nisha are made out to be clear bad guys seeming to agree with what ever jack decides to do. There is a great origins story that was told in this game accept it was broken into pieces for DLC purposes. Claptastic voyage is the true ending to the game and should have been included in full version. Being a borderlands title i expected more DLC with the season pass. More origin stories could have been told through DLC Like how Wilhelm became the badass we fight in borderlands 2. How does jack get nisha her own town, and last but not least what happens to Athena after all this. These topics are things as a fan would pay to see. Borderlands to presequel is a good installment in the series but it does not push things forward. It attempts to add more depth to the characters but its cut short. This game has alot of replay value like the other borderlands but doesnt live up to the legend of borderlands 2. As a fan i expected more DLC granted "claptastic voyage" was great ,it left me wanting more. This game is about two DLC packs short of being a perfect 10. I want to see the aftermath stories of each character, especially the origins of wilhelm and how he became a robot Expand

It was an amazing game. I haven't completed it yet, but I like it so far. I like that Concordia was like sanctuary in BL2. I liked the O2 kits, but they could've done them better. I mean you shouldn't be able to die by staying out looting too long.

Yes, this game draws heavily onto Borderlands 2. Yes, it could have been a Boderlands 2 DLC. Yet I think it is a great addition to the franchise, and add gameplay mechanics (low gravity and 0² level mainly) that enhance the classic Borderlands gunplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw this game on a Steam sale and bought it. Loved Borderlands 2 so I thought I would enjoy this one. Lets start reviewing shall we?
The story was great, to me. I really enjoyed learning about the events that led up to the Borderlands.
The dialogue was good, but the censoring was really a pain in the ass. Why do you censor words in a Borderlands game? That is just plain stupidity to me.
The gameplay was great. It felt just like Borderlands 2 so its real easy to play. The zero gravity was a great idea and implemented well.
Level design was a bit tedious at times. There are a lot, I mean, A LOT, of places to fall and die and re-spawn which was kind of a pain to me. Also, a lot of maze like maps that will be a bit tedious to go through more then once.
Enemies were more or less the same as previous games. Here they can butt slam and fly in zero gravity, but the same. Bosses were good and tough. The main thing I absolutely hate, hate with a burning passion, the one thing..."Spoiler", ....The end boss battle. It is one of the worst design of the entire game. You start off fighting the guardian, you have to lower its shield not once, not twice, but three times. Only after its lowered three times then you can kill it, but wait! There's more, and this one's a screamer! The guardian comes back again and this time, it has three faces. So, you have to destroy the shield and health of each face. Awful design to me.
I'd recommend it for the Borderland fans out there, but if its on sale. Yes, there is fun here but its not worth the price. I got it on sale for $29.99 and I still feel that it was a bit too pricey.

Given that this game retailed at US$ 59.99 I cannot bring myself to give it more than a four, I would have enjoined a simple re-skinned Borderlands 1 or a incorporation of the Borderlands 1 characters and enemies as well as world much more. In short I could only recommend this game to someone who fiends for the Borderlands series and even then it is likely to leave you disappointed.

To anyone considering purchasing this game. If you do not already own Borderlands 2 and its DLC or Borderlands 1 and its DLC grab that instead. It'll cost you less and you'll get double the game time out of it and at least twice the fun.

If this game had retailed as a massive Borderlands 2 expansion and retailed for USD 19.99 pre-order or USD 29.99 post release I believe it would have been received much better and I would have then given it a 7.

Way to short, just when we thought it was getting good (the last boss) finally after hours of slow tedious missions and boring story it was over. The loot is uninteresting compared to Bl2 and 3 the zones are annoying at best and given the option to turn off the low gravity i would hands down.
    Felt like a bad dlc.

Some of the complaints are just dumb, for example, running time. Playing most of the missions and side missions, I got a solid 40 hours out of BL:TPS, so I don't see what all the complaints are about it being an "extended DLC".

As for it being "more of the same", I guess I'm someone who appreciates that. The formula wasn't broken so they added some new elemental types, vehicles and low gravity, but other than that, it's still Borderlands. If you just want more Borderlands, this is your game.

Personally, the story's pretty good in my eyes. It has its funny moments. The gameplay itself is also unique in a positive sense. The only thing I didn't like were the many sidequests. Some of them were very repetitive. I'm also bummed that they scrapped many of the season pass. I'm glad I didn't buy it seen the cost in comperison to the content.

There isn’t a AAA game out there that doesn’t exist to make money, but Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel stumps for dollars in a brazenly insipid way. It’s a paint-by-numbers effort, almost from top to bottom.

2K delivered exactly what it promised: a derivative game which nevertheless deserves to be completed in single-player for the story. And then maybe one more play through with a friend or two, just to shoot stuff and kid around, before setting Pre-Sequel aside until DLCs come. Just as it always is with Borderlands. [Dec 2014, p.64]
