In many aspects, this game feels like an extended piece of DLC for Borderlands 2 - but lacking in a lot of its charm and character, it mostly acts as a way to flesh out background characters and Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2, but after that game has already told its story, so it fails on that front - it's far too little - too late to make its existence as a game necessary. However, in a vacuum this game is just as good, if not better, than Borderlands 2 when it comes to the diversity of its mechanics and balance of its gameplay, which is impressive as my former opinion was that Borderlands 2 had a near perfect gameplay loop until you hit the OP levels, but as part of a franchise - it certainly did not stand out and was a low-point for quite some time until Borderlands 3's release reinvigorated the franchise. If you're into Borderlands you've probably already played this, but if you're coming off Borderlands 2 - this will forever live in its shadow. Expand

I fell in love with Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2. I was absolutely captivated by the cartoon graphics that add charm to the game. The previous parts went to see progress, while here we have the same graphics as in the second. What worked remained. Weapons, controls, inventory and so on. All this very similar to the second part. But what was not so similar to the second part was optimization. I'll put it this way. The game ran fine all the time. Almost all the time. Here and there there were minor declines in FPS, which I don't understand, because that was not the case with the second one and the game looks the same. It was such a minor hate slap in the beginning, but now for the better side. But it's a fact that the developers have changed the environment and that's fine. Although it doesn't have my favorite desert from number one or number two, it still has the luxury of location. What I would highlight and at the same time easily rebuke is the story. As the name suggests, this is not another full-fledged part. The game focuses mainly on the character of Handsome Jack. It's not bad and I didn't even mind. I just want to warn you about what game you want to buy with the fact that you think you will get a continuation of the story in the style of previous games. Not that. This is for real fans, and in fact I would describe this game in general, as such a nice addition for fans of the Borderlands series, which I already have thanks to previous games and I enjoyed the game. So to sum it up. Borderlands The Pre-Sequel doesn't add much, but on the one hand it doesn't take away and let's say in the form of gameplay, the game is as beautiful as in the previous parts. I'd rather end it all with the words fans of the series get into it and normal players of the series are uninitiated or simply Borderlands fans don't prefer their hands off. In short, you have to decide for yourself if it is worth it. For me, a good game that I recommend, but really to those fans. Expand

Pretty much everything is worse compared to Borderlands 2, it's still an ok game but it lacks a lot. Also it just comes across as amateur, the voice acting is poor most of the time. The world and the characters in it are less interesting, Even though a lot of the characters are in both games they just seem worse in this game.

Personally, the story's pretty good in my eyes. It has its funny moments. The gameplay itself is also unique in a positive sense. The only thing I didn't like were the many sidequests. Some of them were very repetitive. I'm also bummed that they scrapped many of the season pass. I'm glad I didn't buy it seen the cost in comperison to the content.

I feel as though the character quality regressed in TPS, similar to that of the first Borderlands as they didn't have any nuances to them and the game didn't make you care about them too much even if it tried to. In addition, the endgame content compared to Borderlands 2 was poor and especially in terms of the doc with the exception of the Claptrap one. On balance, TPS was an alright game.

Compared to Borderlands 1 and 2 at least, haven't played 3 yet, TPS has arguably the best story of the series and I would say a much better balance with it's endgame weapons and the classes. However, the endgame and post game support was faaaaaaaaaaaar worse than the first couple games in the main series. When you beat the game and the claptrap dlc, that's basically it. A few bosses to farm, side quests, but that's about it. While they did fix the spawns of some bosses so you could farm them again, there is still a large amount of enemies that you can't kill again after the first time around. This really brings down the post game grind. UVHM has a much better balance compared to BL2 and a lack of OP levels was a god send, but with the lack of general content, this barely does anything for the overall experience. I think the classes in the game are honestly some of the most fun to use in the series with great skill trees, but there are a few instances of an overuse of CO-OP oriented trees which are more or less useless outside of playing with friends. On Elpis, a lot of the areas feel very samey unfortunately. Enemy types are not as interesting as Borderlands 2. The weapons in the game also leave a lot to be desired at times. The edition of laser weapons is fun, but the overall reuse of designs and weapons from Borderlands 2 makes it feel far too samey. Zero gravity and jump packs are fun, but especially around the end of the game you'll be hard pressed to find areas that actually utilize them as much as you'd think. The O2 mechanic is lack luster and gives no sense of urgency which can be viewed how you want it, good or bad. Overall, TPS is a fun game to play and I'd say a great experience the the first time around, but you may have a lack of interest coming back for more after that. Get it on sale and play for the story and gameplay while that can last you.

The only part I wasn't so happy about is that you cannot really play the game by only following the main storyline, because your character will eventually hit a difficulty wall with enemies with a level "way higher" than yours and also bosses that cannot be defeated until you level up... turning playing into grinding if you want to make your way through the end.

You go on a mission and there is a early boss fight which is over your level. Even the side-quest doesn't help that much leveling you up. When I get a good-looking gun from a tough fight, it's on a low level which means it's pretty useless. It's not just the guns too, the items you counted are going to be low level and it's hard to find good items for your level. In Borderlands 2, to me, it takes 10 or 15 minutes to kill a boss but in this game it takes longer than cause you don't have powerful weapons. I understand boss fight can be long or short in video games but in this game it make you lose interest in the boss fight and takes up your ammo and you lose a lot of money while playing this. The stuff you won't to buy, you won't have enough money for it cause you die a lot in this game cause it's that hard. But to me, the only thing I like about this game is exploring, just like every other video games. I want to do more than just exploring but that's the only thing I'll get for this game. I'll recommend anyone to play this but it's barely playable. Expand

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel tells the story of how Handsome Jack progressed from being a corporate lackey to becoming the villain we know in Borderlands 2. Gameplay is the same asBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel tells the story of how Handsome Jack progressed from being a corporate lackey to becoming the villain we know in Borderlands 2. It’s not a journey I asked to take, but since it’s here, I played it and had a good time – but with no camraderie, no Angel, minimal Claptraps, and little environment variety, much of the charm is missing. Gameplay is the same as previous games in the franchise, but now with oxygen tanks and low gravity. Worth a purchase for fans of the series and its co-op loot-and-shoot gameplay (which is as good as ever). New-comers to the franchise should look at Borderlands 2 instead; it is the better game.
Total size installed on my hard-drive (base game + Season Pass): 10.4 GB

The story tells the tale of Athena, an assassin encountered in the first Borderlands game, and how she was employed by Jack to save Pandora’s moon from the evil Captain Zarpedon who has taken over the Helios space station and is firing the station’s laser at the moon to destroy it because reasons (whew, that was mouthful). Zarpedon actually does have reasons, and you can find some Echoes lying around that tell more of her story; she’s actually a really interesting character.

But like so many of the characters in the Pre-Sequel, she’s barely there. Mordecai and Brick only appear in cut-scenes, while Roland and Lilith stand around in the Up Over Bar doing nothing (with two lines of dialogue apiece when clicked upon). Tiny Tina provides some voice-over in True Vault Hunter mode, but otherwise only has one or two lines. Jack tells jokes constantly, but is never funny – not even in a “I’m ashamed of laughing but I’m laughing anyway” approach. And apparently it’s impossible to have a Borderlands game without Moxxi or Crazy Earl. Marcus is NOT present, but his vending machines are everywhere, even in the most unlikely of places. In place of Scooter is Janey Springs, and she is a bright, cheerful addition to a cast that is frequently far too glum. Unfortunately, the Pre-Sequel’s attempts at fun and funny is mostly meh.

The areas feel smaller. Unlike Borderlands 2, which featured a great variety of environments, the Pre-Sequel features one style of terrain – the rocky surface of Pandora’s moon – and any variety happens in the in-door levels. The low-gravity was fun, and allowed for some really creative jumping puzzles. The oxygen requirement was limiting, though. It discouraged random exploration, because I was frequently checking my air amount to make sure I didn’t run out. This concern is somewhat mitigated by plentiful air pockets in every level, but still annoying. Most enemies are recycled from other games (and re-spawn very quickly). Now we have Torks instead of Skags, and they’re animated differently, but their function and hitpoints feel the same. There are fewer bosses than in previous Borderlands games, but the final boss is awesome, taking place in more old Eridian ruins. Design and atmosphere is great, even if it was easy to slice through all the enemies (I finished my first run at Level 26).

As in previous Borderlands games, there are tons of things to loot, but few of them are useful. All the beam weapons are OP; they even helped me to wipe out the Zarpedon boss in less than five minutes – SOLO. Find one (or more!), organize your build around it, and proceed to plow through enemies. A nice addition to the gameplay is the ground-slam. Suddenly, facing hordes of creatures doesn’t seem like a fruitless endeavor. Jump, boost to a greater height (which uses oxygen!), then slam back into the ground for area-of-effect damage. The slam can be customized and upgraded like everything else. I found myself avoiding fire-based elemental weapons because fire needs an atmosphere in order to burn – making their use situational at best. Ice weapons + ground-slam (which shatters frozen enemies) was a more than viable substitute.

At the heart of any Borderlands game is the co-operative experience, and that is as good as ever. Getting four people together to save Pandora’s moon makes for a great time, with easy drop-in, drop-out. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is easily the lesser game of the trilogy, but it’ll scratch that loot-and-shoot itch. Recommended if you’ve just got to have more Borderlands.

    On DLC:
    - Two character classes, Handsome Jack and the Baroness. Seriously, Gearbox, stop cutting character classes out of the game to sell for an extra $10 apiece. Sheesh.
    - The Holodome Onslaught adds 10 more character levels and holographic horde mode. Having the character levels is nice, but the rest is like the holographic simulator in the Pinnacle Station DLC for the first Mass Effect. Remember that DLC? That’s right, no one does.
    - Claptastic Voyage is a great piece of story DLC – IF YOU ARE A FAN OF CLAPTRAP (I am, kind of. Depends on my mood). Otherwise, prepare to be annoyed in a big way.

I had no idea this would be such a hard review to write...I can'even say I genuinely believe in the score I gave this game.

First off, it's good to get out of the way that 2K Australia are trying WAAY too hard to make Borderlands 2. This is clear as the UI has barely changed, and the game structure less so. Heck, even the bloody opening FMV has the same structure as BL" - the characters are on their way to somewhere when their vechile is ambushed, prompting a reel of the characters' names and abilities. It also ends with the four of them blasting off agaaaiiiinnnn! Barely any of the gameplay mechanics have changed. There's an Oxygen meter which allows you to double-jump, but it adds little tothe expreience other than that it's fun to mess about with. I can't understate just how many assets from BL2 have been recycled - the gameplay, story and world structure really are a carbon copy of BL2.
It's also clear that inferior writers found themselves under great pressure to be as funny as their Gearbox counterparts. Most of the humour comes off as random, or as dank meme material, rather than being genuinely funny, as opposed to BL2. One of your first allies' defining character traits is being a lesbian with an Aussie accent. There are moments when it's funny - a lot of moments - but those moments are outnumbered in frequency by the number of times the game tries to emulate the Borderlands sense of humour and fails. And it's sad to admit that.

That said, it's really not all bad. Most of what you loved from BL2 is back - that oh-so-perfect gunplay is still kicking and in top form. The guns are as interesting as ever, multiplayer is as great as ever, and as 2K loves to proclaim, you do indeed get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of content. The fanservice here is top-notch - at least 2K Australia knew of one surefire way to please fans, eh? Characters such as Mad Moxxi and Handsome Jack return, and - in what is potentially one of the best pieces of fanservice outside of Smash Bros. - you can play as Claptrap. Speaking of which, I'm liking a lot of the playable characters. They can feel a little gimmicky but their execution in-game is well-done.

Elpis, a moon orbiting Pandora, is an awesome setting, by the way. The locales look really pretty, and it's the perfect setting for focusing on how Handsome Jack came to be the big bad which he was in Borderlands 2. It's nice that the Borderlands universe is expanded on in this way. I WILL say, however, that some of the new enemy designs are remarkably lazy. They're basically redisgned adversaries which fit into the exact same archetypes from before: karrogs are the new skags, and skavs are the new bandits of Elpis. It makes me wonder if 2K Australia couldn't have found a better use for these new enemies, or at least a more interesting context to insert them into rather than so obviously being fodder enemies.

If it sounds like there's more bad than good in the Pre-Sequel, there isn't, I trust you. It's just that nearly everything good I could say about this game has already been said about BL2, and if you're reading this review you've most likely checked out BL2 before in some way, so you know what to expect. It's more of the same, this time made by people who are trying too hard to be something they aren't; they aren't as funny or original as the team behind Borderlands 1 & 2. But more of the same, at least in small doses, doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you enjoyed any other Borderlands game, you're still guaranteed a good time here as far as I'm concerned; just think of it as being more like a new entry in the vein of the Pokémon or Bayonetta series, which which deliver more of what worked, rather than in the vein of BL2, which improved so vastly upon the Borderlands formula. It would seem that the Pre-Sequel pkays victim to BL2's success. Or maybe think of the Pre-Sequel as an expansion pack, a very large DLC for BL 2 - which perhaps would have made it more well-received.
