Cons.:
    - There are missions and minions that are created just to kill the player and make the gameplay overly difficult even on medium mode. For example, if the enemy fire touches you slightly, you're dead. Instead of making it like in Contra, when if the bullet touches a tip of the foot, you're still alive.
    - If they make the game with that hard vehicle mode (moving, shooting, jumping, multiple actions), need more checkpoints. Otherwise, it's harder than Battletoads.

Those cons are not critical but really worsen my gameplay experience. Even though I bought the controller JUST for this game. Keyboard controls are unbearable.

This is hardest than any Contra game ever made, and that says a lot. From start to finish, your poor character will be oblitarated with no mercy. No matter how good you were in previous run n gun games, you will be destroyed until you learn every single enemy patter of the stage. The game will throw at you a huge ammount of fast enemies and many, many unavoidable bullets. Unless your reflexes are top notch, you will die a lot to the point that it will become too frustrating, and that's if you are a hardcore gamer, cause if you are a casual, say goodbye to your sanity or put it on easy. Despite the crazy difficulty, I found the art design to be just wonderful and the controls are responsive (almost all the time). The problem is that the game will give you no mercy and not even a health bar, so you will die with 1 single shot. There's no way to beat the 2° stage without loosing lives on normal without cheating. Oddly enough, the 3° stage is not even half as hard as the 2° one. Believe me, if you are not hardcore enough you will suffer a lot, unless you don't care about loosing lives (that would be what a casual does) but a hardcore gamer always care for every single life lost. I still love the game, this is what the hardcore gaming community needed, a fresh new Contra styled experience, I wish I could give this a 9/10, but the difficulty is way too high

An affectionate nod to the run and gun shooters of the 90s, more specifically Contra 3, but with a little bit of Ninja Gaiden or Strider thrown in for good measure. It's a little more forgiving then its inspirations, with unlimited continues and fewer bullet traps that result in an unavoidable loss of a life.

In a wasted future where humanity is on the verge of being wiped out by the robot overlords, a ragtag group of resistance fighters launch a desperation mission to locate their control core and take it out. As either power blonde Mavra or token friendly robot Doyle, you'll have to shoot, melee, jump and dodge roll your way through six stages of increasing difficulty, including many boss fights of the type that were a hallmark of the genre. Also featured are the jetbike segments also typical of Contra, but also usable mechs in the vein of Metal Slug or Mega Man X.

Mavra and Doyle spawn with a basic gun, and can pick up three subweapons, a short-range Wave gun that can be wiggled around to damage enemies at odd angles, a manually detonated Grenade launcher, and a charged Particle beam useful for damaging the stationary bosses. These weapons are lost on death, and much like its forebears, it only takes one hit to kill you. You can stave this off with a shield bot pickup worth two hits, or deft use of the dodge roll, which provides a few invincibility frames. You also have the option of holding a button to lock your movement and enable eight-way aiming, as in Super Metroid or Doom Troopers.

Playable with a keyboard but ultimately better handled with a controller, Blazing Chrome offers a few modern niceties, including mid-level checkpoints, a built in save system, and overall difficulty that ranks somewhere well below the controller-snapping, mind-melting frustration that the Contra series is infamous for. You'll probably get a few game overs, but they don't slow you down as much as they did in the old days. There's also the option to play on an Easy mode with additional lives and "support capsules," but disables leaderboard ranking for that run. I have a feeling when I played the game at PAX East 2019 it was set to Easy, as I was able to negotiate the first level with no deaths and had no such luck this time around.

The game is not lengthy by any means, but success unlocks a "Hardcore" diffculty that removes the save system and adds limited continues, if you're feeling masochistic. You also receive a "mirror mode" option to flip the stages horizontally, a boss rush mode, and most significantly two additional characters, gratuitous ninja Raijin and cyborg lady Suhaila, who use short range slashing beam attacks and cannot use the subweapons, but can charge up a long range, high damage projectile and use an air dash move. Additional achievements are granted for completing the game mirrored or with the melee characters, so multiple runs are encouraged.

This adrenaline-pumping, tough as nails run-and-gunner, isn't retro-inspired, but pure retro! Besides that, it's also tons of fun. That being said, it has a couple of issues, like some annoying hit-boxes, a lack of balance in terms of difficulty and weaponry, and, finally, the fact that it doesn't add anything new to the genre. It's great, but it could be so much more.

Blazing Chrome understands exactly what made the older titles tick. It has the look and sound of classic titles, and it emulates the gameplay really well. The action is relentless, and boss fights reward skill over pure ammo dumping. The game doesn't go for adding on extras from other genres, relying instead on pure gameplay to drive the title. The short length, which was normal for offerings from that time period and genre, is buoyed by gameplay modes that feel worthwhile instead of tacked on. For run-and-gun fans, Blazing Chrome is an essential addition to the gaming library.

Blazing Chrome is a great platformer - but a very difficult one. It’s a delight for all fans of Contra or Metal Slug or, more generally, for anyone looking for a wonderfully punishing time.
