This is coming from a guy which loves sidescrollers, finished all Metroid games with 100%, played through Symphony of the Night... but Blasphemous just surprised me in every way imaginable, i enjoyed this game very much! It covers all aspects of what a sidescroller should be all about.

The appeal is mainly in the original world, inspired by some kind of esoteric and gnarly Spanish Catholicism, which carries the experience with its themes of penance, sacrifice, and a mysterious Miracle that blurs the line between pain and grace. This setting is brought to life by glorious pixel art, which features detailed cutscenes and large-scale, cinematic bosses.
Writing helps realize the strange world of Blasphemous, and this game's writing encapsulates for me its best and worst qualities. Every ability and item you find has lore text that fleshes out the world. Despite feeling rough, as if they needed a couple more revisions, these small stories consistently fascinated me. Because of them, I had a very strong motivation to continue exploring, and to me this is a sign of true inspiration: The strength of Blasphemous' concept is enough to trivialize the weaknesses of the game's script that result from a native Spanish speaker writing in English.

The bigger flaws lie in the gameplay. While Blasphemous is competent in the main pillars of metroidvania - being platforming, exploration, combat, secrets, and RPG elements - the balance is just a little off. Some examples:
-Your currency (tears) is so easy to gain that it makes all items related to tears useless. Much of the time I was running around with tens of thousands of tears.
-While the game features insta-death spikes, the punishment upon death is only to lose some of your maxmimum mana temporarily. The fact you don't lose your tears removes all fear from dying, and reduces it to an occasional annoyance when you miss a ladder grab or whatnot.
-Most of the equippable items you gain aren't useful enough, the best ones simply boost defence vs. various attack types.
-There aren't enough movement upgrades in general. The type of stuff I found is along the lines of, reduce the cooldown on the dodge/dash or fall, so you can take another action faster. Not very epic.
-Likewise, the spells and sword hearts vary too much in quality. One spell is a lightning attack that provides the unique utility of hitting things at the top of the screen, while another merely increases attack speed for a short duration.
-Ability upgrades are, once again, poorly balanced. The tears spent on most of them go to waste, as they're often less effective than smart use of the jump, dodge, and normal attack. The charge attack desperately needs to have freedom of movement, as it's too slow to be useful in the situations it should be. The dash attack consistently whooshes straight past enemies, missing them. The ranged attack and the falling attack are no more than utility skills, having no damage application during bosses.
-The delay between actions is a little longer than other games, and takes some getting used to.
I could go on, but I hope you get the idea. Basically, almost everything about the gameplay could use just a little tweaking, to tighten it up.
But don't get me wrong, it's not a frustrating game. As I said the gameplay fundamentals are competent, and traversing the levels is fun, killing enemies is fun. There are almost a dozen interconnected levels, all with their own obstacles and enemy types. And regardless of any balance issues, the bosses provide a good variety of challenges. All in all I'm impressed with what the devs accomplished, and I look forward to seeing what they can make when given more time to refine their design ideas.

And so, while The Game Kitchen's first dish tastes good, it's somewhat undercooked. There, I have made the joke. My initial playthrough was approx. 12 hours, 85/100% completion, meaning at least 15% of the game is optional.

When it comes to music and sound,I feel like there is a good variety of it as well, but nothing that stands out. That's not to say that the soundtrack accompannying you in your adventure is bad, just that it didn't stick out to me as much as I would like but the focus of the game isn't the music of course it's just there to acclimatize you.The gameplay sounds good all around and there isn't much to say about it.
Lastly, when it comes to gameplay,it's the complete opposite to the presentation of the game, since it's really standarized. You won't find anything new or experimental in this department and after a couple of hours you'll have complete understanding of the game mechanics and timing is the only skill you will really need to improve. The combos are about what you would expect from a side scrolling hack and slash and the powers you obtain and use with fervor are situational if not useless.
The biggest challenge this game offers other than bosses is sadly the platforming.I found myself falling to my death way more times than dying to enemies and a lot of these have been due to the character missing a land by a mere pixel, which is really frustarating. The challenge some of the bosses offer though can make up for a few instances of bad platforming, especially the final 2 bosses who I can say you have to almost master the game to be able to beat.
Overall,a pretty solid and beautiful experience,a couple of bugs here and there and nothing new in the gameplay portion, but the world and challenge of the game make up for it.

Blasphemous is a successful fusion of Dark Souls and Metroidvania gameplay, while notably lacking several of the features that make the former occasionally irritating to play, specifically the invasion mechanic. Blasphemous is a successful fusion of Dark Souls and Metroidvania gameplay, while notably lacking several of the features that make the former occasionally irritating to play, specifically the invasion mechanic. It is also an aesthetic masterwork, painting a landscape of stone, sin and acoustic guitars that embodies the darkest aspects of religious fervor.

A curse of sins unforgiven lies upon the land of Custodia. Known as the Grievous Miracle, it is guilt made manifest, twisting and warping the fearful masses into murderous and grotesque mockeries of human life. You are the Penitent One, the last survivor of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrows. Wielding a sword born of guilt known as Mea Culpa, it is your penance and your mission to cleanse the land of holy terrors.

While similar to Hollow Knight and other "melee vanias" in some respects, it is considerably less difficult then the former, though it starts out rough. Mea Culpa has surprising reach, and persistent upgrades are abound throughout the world. Though death can come easily, rather then drop the entirety of your currency, called Tears of Atonement, as in Souls or Hollow Knight, you merely drop a "guilt fragment", which imposes a small penalty to your maximum magic, called Fervor. Successive deaths result in more fragments and Fervor penalties but they can be easily retrieved by returning to the scene of your death, or else you may visit a Confessor Statue and pay a Tears fee to have the guilt removed. There are "Prie Dieu" shrines that perform the save, flask refill and enemy reset functons of Souls' Bonfires, with the warp function instead relegated to dedicated warp rooms a la Symphony of the Night.

At the Penitent One's disposal are various holy artifacts. You begin with two Biliary Flasks that perform the function of Souls' Estus Flask, and you can find up to eight more in the world. They must first be brought to a Fountain to be filled, and these fountains can also be used to refill your health and flasks for a Tears fee. Rosary Beads provide passive buffs and up to six can be equipped, though you begin with only two slots and must find Knots and bring them to a certain NPC first. You can also equip up to 3 relics, which provide various traversal abilities in the vein of Samus' suit upgrades. There are Sword Hearts, which provide both a buff and proportionate drawback. Finally, there are active spells, called Prayers, of which only one can be equipped at a time but are usually quite useful. All of the above can be changed on the fly save for Sword Hearts, which can only be changed at a shrine. Also to be found are maximum health and fervor upgrades and Mea Culpa shrines, which when first found upgrade your base damage, and provide additional attacks and upgrades for a Tears fee.

While on the shorter side of Metroidvanias and possessing a lot of backtracking if you want to achieve 100% completion, the detailed hand-drawn visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, impressive boss fights and the merciful ability to return to the last shrine you rested at via quitting and reloading your save without progress loss, makes it an enjoyable jaunt throughout. I'd love to see further games set in Blasphemous' universe.

The story is also bombastic but it requires a bit of patience and exploration since you need to piece it together from the different bosses, allies and hidden doors and such. There are also 3 endings and I feel like the creators somehow praise Religion and the holy benefits(HOPE) that it can give to people who are with one foot in the grave but also try to make you aware of false hoods and priests that offer you salvation via Religion. Especially the third ending explores that even deeper but I wont spoil it(just play it). The soundtrack is also great but don't expect any hardcore and epic orchestras when fighting the bosses. My minor issues with the game is that the keyboard input sometimes doesn't work correctly or it has a delay which can result in a lot of unfair falls to your death. Some game play mechanics are also annoying especially against some very (almost cheat like) enemies. The map and some level designs need improvement in my opinion since they are very deceptive and sometimes don;t even make sense. Overall Great Game. Expand

Despite being a bit tedious, Blasphemous offers many satisfying moments like being able to find a shortcut or a shrine when you most need it. Some of the quests are really interesting and even if they're not mandatory to finish the game, I would strongly recommend trying to finish as many of them as possible. The way the story is told (or rather discovered), the amazing artwork, and the fast-paced combat are aspects of the game that grabbed me throughout my playthrough. You'll indeed have to do a lot of backtracking if you want to complete as much as the game as possible, but the rewards are worth it.
