This game has the most intense, immersive graphical experience in a game Ive ever witnessed. By far its the best BF and FPS Ive ever played. Im sorry some are having issues but Ive played a week without any. Its unusual for me to back a game so highly but when that storm rolls in on "Paracel" I just sit there stunned. Ive never seen, or heard, anything like it before.

There is a great game under this technical disaster though.Lots of small improvements over its predecessor. Commander is not very good though. Lots of content in the multiplayer. Some excellent maps: Flood Zone and Paracel Storm are probably my favorites. Most maps work great with 64 players with lots of vehicles. Rush is bad. TDM and Domination are great for infantry only combat.

If only this game was in a healthy state, it would be worth around 9.

I literally can't play the game right now. I'm at a known glitch/bug in the game where I can't even progress in single player. So, I got onto multiplayer, and I can't even play because it automatically crashes 30 seconds into any match. It's happened 4 times back to back, I have a top-notch computer and all the drivers.

DICE are a crap studio, and they make crap games. They used to make good games, however. The original run of Battlefield games on the PC were entirely different creatures than this new style, and this new style isn't worth half of the original. It's cheap, it's simplistic, it's boring. DICE, these days, are also terrible at map design and UI design. DICE, throughout their history, have been repeated sell-outs, evidently not actually caring one bit about the games they make. As far as I can see, it's all just looking for money with them, and their messed up priorities has caused them to make much less than they otherwise would have. Selling to EA for $5 million right before Battlefield 2's launch? Holy, holy cow. They were too inexperienced and unaccustomed to money and got way to excited at a terrible, terrible, terrible offer, and they jumped on it. Since then, I think they've been desperate to make up some of the massive revenue that they know they lost, and just keep on making highly bad decisions, one after another. They also are one of the worst companies when it comes to releasing stable products. Every release of theirs is drowning in bugs and issues. And they never care, and never improve they actually just keep getting worse. Terrible company, boring game. Expand

I wanted to love this game, battlefield is like crack to me, still get my fix online, but single player needed alot more work. Dice should re evaluate for the future before passing off another single player that doesnt make the grade.. The game is better without it (but who buys battlefield for single player anyways...and we know why...)

It seems like EA Dice has learned a few marketing Techniques from Infinity Wards Call of Duty series. This game is basically Battlefield 3 repackaged but worse... a least for now (Read why below)

It seems like EA Dice has learned a few marketing Techniques from Infinity Wards Call of Duty series. This game is basically Battlefield 3 repackaged but worse... a least for now (Read why below)

Single Player: When the game came out Single Player and even Multiplayer were unplayable due to unforgivable optimization on the pc port. Now after a few days it has been fixed (to an extent) but still experiance Lag spikes from Video and internet (Battle log). The Single player experiance is no different from your average War shooter but it feels like Michael Bay had directed it. Too many explosions is sometimes a bad thing especially for an Average gamer PC. There isn't really any story to follow just a forgettible experiance we all played before.

Multiplayer: EA Dice claims that this is a new FrostBite Engine however there doesn't seem to be any noticable differences I guess another marketing technique. The UI for your loadouts have changed into four weapon sections one of them being unique to the class you choose. The game is unstable filled with Server Lag Rubberbanding and stutters. A more common issue is the constant crashing which they still have not fixed yet in this game. If multiplayer worked out smoothly I would give this game a point. One thing I noticed is that DICE has a thing for Tanks. Each map has an abundance of tanks leaving infantry warfare meaningless especially when Engineer can barely do any damage to any armored vehicle because Dice removed Weak points. One of my biggest concerns are the Map Design. This guy needs to be kicked off the team because these maps are tiny especially on a 64 man server with an abundance of armored vehicles besides that the maps are 60% water based maps... Really Dice? A nice addition is the Dynamic Maps that change the battlefield throughout the game and the return of Commander mode wich was popular in BF2 and 2142.

Im giving this game untill the next expansion and if it suprises me it would get a 8/10 but for now the six seems generous.

    Pros: Commander Mode Returns!
    Dynamic Environments
    64 player match ups
    Free expansion on pre-order
    New Obliteration Mode

    Cons: Forgetful Single Player
Really Poor Optimization (Worse then the Beta)
No in Game Server Browser (Just Web client)

Randomly people will not get rewarded with experience after the game has ended, either.
I can see other peoples reviews where they say the "audio is top class, perfect" and such.
I can count at least two maps where the sound just cuts out in the middle of the map.

Yes, the game has it's positive sides. But for me, there's too much bugs to be squashed,
balancing to be done, and fine-tuning to be done before it can come close to being all-round
confortable to play. Just my two cents worth.

Back when BF3 was released I rated it a 6 I believe. I went on to put in around 1400hrs into that game. It wasn't until they fixed *most* of the problems did I find enjoyment playing BF3. It took months to nearly a year before weapon balance (which still is kinda a joke but not so much so as it used to be) was fixed, crashes were resolved (game hasn't crashed in over a year for me), and other bugs, i.e. underslung dart bug, were resolved. These fixes saved BF3 in my opinion but I can only speak as an infantry player. I don't know about balance in regards to vehicles (though I've heard the tanks were nerfed). What also kept me playing BF3, and still does, was the "feel" of the game. I liked the fluidity of the game, the gun mechanics, etc.
What I liked about BF3 is absent in BF4. The game feels stiff. The gun mechanics dumbed down. Seriously, just looking at my stats, my avg accuracy is much higher in BF4 than in BF3. It wasn't terrible in BF3, avg was 19% but in BF4 its nearly 22%. Why? Because weapon recoil is so easy to control you can snipe people with ARs. Weapons also feel like toy guns rather than the beasts from BF3. My second gripe comes from the perk system. Holy jesus what were they thinking. In BF3 each person in a squad could select a perk that gave all people in the squad said perk. Ideally, you'd want to get in a squad with people who ran different perks. This worked out most of time because you could just jump to a squad or change your own. When people didn't bother to change theirs you could kick them from squad if you were the squad leader or just jump to another squad in hopes of being able to get better perks. In other words, you had more control over your perks. In BF4 you know have to rely on pubbies to actually play as a squad to get your perks through a progression bar but if you've every played BF4 with random pubbies you know that most BF players have downs. They will not do anything squad oriented and thus you are out of luck if you wish to play with perks. Not only is this frustrating but instead of picking your perk now you have to pick a pre-defined perk tree. Want cover and sprint? Ha, not going to happen. Want cover, ammo, sprint? (the essentials) Not going to happen. In BF3 my k/d was over 3. In BF4 my k/d is just under 2. Why? Because in BF3 spawns were eventually fixed and you didnt have people spawning directly behind you on flags. In domination mode in BF4 people will spawn directly behind you. For example, let's say your team has two of the three flags. Where oh where will the enemy team spawn? You'd think at or behind their flag right? Nah, on one of your flags, and most likely behind the line that you and your team has created to defend it. Completely unforgivable design problem that should have been addressed long ago. I could go on about the shortcomings of this game and I could go into all the crashes (server/client side), the joining server bugs (black screen that eventually just disconnects you but won't let you terminate the process) or any of the other bugs I'm too lazy to go into. This game will be "ok" in a few months once they fix problems but as a whole the new mechanics are really what bring the game down. Certain things weren't perfect in BF3 (perks for example) but now they went ahead and made it even more broken. I bought this game on release (didnt preorder) with hesitation and I should have probably not bought it till it dropped in price. Now I almost feel forced to play it so I can at least get something for my money. Big disappointment.

This game has been a blast. It is refining the way video games are nowadays. Now this game is the definition of "next-gen".
They fixed a lot of the problems of Battlefield 3 such as balancing, WAY better map design, more modes, bigger maps, more destructibility. With these fixes, I had such a more enjoyable time than the previous great Battlefield 3.

The only downside of this great game is the technical issues alongside. Frequent crashes, optimization, and server failures have disappointed me. Its always scary getting a good score cause you never know if the game might crash and you can lose all that hard earned XP or even possibly guns! I know they rushed out this game, but these are the most important parts of the game: Making sure the game is made correctly!

When it works, it works great, though for most people, it's not working which means when it works for you, in game half of your teammates are p'd off from crashing or being sniped from within a building, so they aren't in a good mood to work with you on any objectives. If this were working properly, it would ALMOST be as good as Battlefield 2 (I don't compare to BF3, which was made for the limited resources and attention spans of consoles and console gamers). I am unable to even finish the campaign in the mean time as that crashes constantly as well. This game should have been tested much more thoroughly. This is becoming a bad trend in gaming. Just like Total War Rome 2 and many other games, the early adopters are the beta testers. I've learned my lesson about buying games at launch for the time being. It's a couple weeks after launch and you would think the major issues would be ironed out. I put the game down for over a week thinking they would have hammered out the main issues, but it's just as bad as when it launched. They have not issued a client side patch (rumor is that they have to wait on the consoles review period for updates.) Do yourself a favor and wait, though I do recommend that you eventually pick it up, when you can play it is a blast.

The graphics is much better than Battlefield 3, and finally the maps aren't just 50 shades of blue. Sound is still in a class of it's own. DICE has reintroduced Commander mode, squad leaders aren't a joke, and a commo rose that works. Changes to the server listing in Battelog means it's quite feasible to run settings close to classic Battlefield without having issues with filling it up.

So on paper, there's a lot to look forward to. But both single player and multiplayer are almost completely ruined by a few but very important core issues. Note I do not mention co-op because Battlefield 4 has no co-op, a surprising and sad move in my opinion.

In the case of the single player it's the story. Sure it's a corridor shooter, but even those can be interesting if the story is good, for example like Spec Ops: The Line or Medal of Honor (2010). While the story in Battlefield 4 isn't as bad as in Battlefield 3, it is not a whole lot better. It contains a handful of bland characters doing things that make no sense, with tons of boring cut scenes and highly predictable plot devices. By trying to make the story as "epic" as possible DICE has completely lost sight of what makes a good and engaging story. In the end the single player is a boring interactive movie which you grudgingly grind through just to unlock a few weapons for the multiplayer.

Now, singleplayer is one thing, but what keeps people player Battlefield has always been it's multiplayer. With gorgeous visuals, rich and engaging sound scape it's hard not to be impressed, even after playing Battlefield 3. However there are a couple of things which are essential to a good multiplayer shooter, and as Team Fortress 2 shows, it's not super-realistic graphics.

The basics are gun play and netcode. Sadly Battlefield 4 fails miserably in both categories. First, the direction the bullets travel and the direction the barrel is pointing are just vaguely correlated in Battlefield 4. Players who are good at controlling the recoil and keeping the aim on target will be punished. Snipers who are quick to react and get the crosshairs back on target will miss. This creates a serious disconnect with the weapons. Add the toned-back-but-still-present suppression effect and you often find yourself thinking you're shooting blanks.

Worse is the netcode. DICE has finally come out and said that improving the netcode is a high priority for them. However the issues that plagues Battlefield 4 has consistently plagued Frostbite games since Bad Company 2. They've had 4 PC shooters using the Frostbite engine with the exact same issues. In my view the most frustrating issues are client-side hit detection and broken chronology, meaning you get hit and die from someone you haven't seen shooting yet, who is pointing a completely different direction or is behind a wall. They are somewhat intertwined, but Bad Company 2 had chronology issues yet with server-side hit detection.

The netcode issues affects vehicles as well. Lock-on warnings which sound immediately before the rocket hits, etc.

With the absolutely fundamental issues more or less completely broken, it's a real struggle to have any fun playing multiplayer. If you just want to sit on a hill, have a few beers and take potshots at the enemy running around some flag then it's not half bad. But it is very far away from being a serious shooter.

Which is sad in a way, as one easily senses there's a lot one could like about Battlefield 4 had it not had vinegar all over it.

Battlefield 4 could just as well be called Battlefield 3.5. The new Battlefield features are only marginal improvements over Battlefield 3, but even as such it leaves the competitors way behind. Hopefully the bugs will be squashed soon. [Nov 2013]

Even if multiplayer wasn't buggy, Battlefield 4 would still only be a barely passable installment in all respects besides the snazzy graphics. EA and DICE played it safe by providing the same thing they did the last time around, with another phoned-in campaign and only minor alterations to the online.

Battlefield 4 keeps soldiering on in the same footsteps as previous games in the series. The lack of worthwhile news makes you wish for more. Dice stays in its comfort zone calls for explosions and not much more. The series needs to evolve or fade out.
