Let's start with the singleplayer. Remind you of Black Ops? Well it didn't remind me of it. That doesn't mean it was any more entertaining though. You spend the first two-thirds of the campaign on boring, linear, on-rails missions that lack any creativity or interest. The only good thing about these missions are the graphics. I was mildly amazed with them. However, if you can grudge past the first two-thirds, you arrive to a nicely thought out and interesting portion of the campaign that I thoroughly enjoyed. To name other issues, I disliked the AIs ability to instantly knife you if you went with 5 feet of them. No, I hated that. Then, I seriously disliked how the only jet mission was a on-rails shooter of boredom. While the plot might have been similar to Black Ops, I felt no connection between the two, which was refreshing since all I heard was talk about how similar it was to Black Ops. I also mildly disliked the quick time events. Why? Well for one, they didn't give me the impression like I was actually there struggling with another person. Another why? The action was slow and when you took hits, typically, the screen slowly turned sideways (no concussive effect to immerse you). The could have improved those QTEs by moving the indicators a little higher on the screen so they are clear and evident. As it is now, if you attempt to immerse yourself in the fight, you miss a key press and watch yourself get killed. That ends my singleplayer review, I would give it a 7/10 as it was mostly boring and linear, so it lacked replayability. However, it was a nice graphical showcase and the ending was pretty good.

Now for the multiplayer portion. As all the fanboys claim, "This is what Battlefield is about!" and they are right. The game really shines (when the servers aren't down, which isn't common luckily) here. The infantry/vehicles are well balanced (except for the helicopters) and the gameplay flows smoothly. You have plenty of unlockables and gamemodes/maps to keep you entertained for quite a while too. Now to the helicopters or should I say blimps. Why(I'm tired of this word)? Well, it isn't that they are particularly slow or weak, it is just that there are so many threats for them that they can't be used effectively. Every engineer with an RPG/Stinger, every vehicle that shoots, jets, other helicopters, and AA are all very strong against helicopters. So, while you attempt to make your first attack, you almost always have a lock on you from an engineer, almost always are being shot at by some MG, and a jet is almost always about to fire a missile or shoot you. I have seen some excellent helicopter pilots, but they never last longer than a minute or two. The best helicopters are the ones like the VENOM (I think) where infantry use mounted miniguns to fire from the sides while engineers repair it from the inside. The other main issue I have with the multipayer (beside the occasional bug) is the lack of a piloting tutorial for helicopters and jets. While there is a co-op mission that allows you to pilot a helicopter, you risk wasting someone's time. I would have implemented a map similar to Coral Sea where all players can fly jets and dogfight to their hearts content. Overall, the multiplayer gameplay is extremely fun and should keep anyone interested for at least a few months (Probably around the release of Back to Karkand). I give the multiplayer a score of 10/10 due to very few problems and extremely fun gameplay that has great replayability. I weigh out the two scores 66% multiplayer 33% singleplayer and reach my score of 9.

People are hating on this game for no reason, campaign was better than bfbc2 in my opinion, but I did miss the humor. multiplayer is amazing as expected, there is no reason not to buy this game. The only complaint I have about the game is battlelog and Origin, I did find this a letdown, but luckily its not all bad, as it has some small upsides (albeit small).

It's not perfect but it's as good as a multiplayer shooter as you will get. There are still some issues that need to be sorted but I am confident DICE will. Single player is ok. Nothing too special. But lets face it. It's a mp game.

Epic greatness. I took 0.5 off the perfect score due to the campaign being a little bit on the rushed side, and 0.5 due to some bugs remaining. Which is really harsh given that reviewers out there tend to ignore the bugs (rightly so I guess, given that they are usually addressed in patches, which then make the game technically great).

Graphics, gameplay, sound, the engine, it's all crazy-great. Don't listen to the bashers who give low scores. This game has BY FAR the best graphics, gameplay, sound and overall engine of any shooter ever released before. It would get a 10, I mean a real, full-fledged TEN ON TEN which means nothing short of revolutionary and PERFECT at the same time, if not for the two small flaws I reported on at first. EPIC GREATNESS I say, this can will keep you coming back for 1,000 hours or more.

I won't give it a 10 because nothing is perfect. Some things need addressed, but certainly DICE released us a working game that's a lot of fun and has amazing graphics and sound.

Battlefield 3 is intense, addictive, and completely worth putting countless hours into the multiplayer. The singleplayer, however, is somewhat underrated to me but mediocre at best. It has its awesome moments here and there, but fails to deliver an emotionally gripping story that war movie lovers (Blackhawk Down, The Hurt Locker) like myself crave. The game's launch was also incrediblly buggy and rushed, with at least two of the maps having quite a few problems in terms of balance. However, patches have long since killed bugs, crashing issues, and rampant screen flickering. Fair enough, at around 4 hours, it's too short, and the characters, plot and presentation are cliche. You'll suffer several cheap deaths, and the quicktime events are jarring and annoying. But considering Battlefield 2 didn't even have a single player mode, it's a bonus that there's even a single player campaign included here at all. What the campaign lacks in innovative story, it makes up for in atmosphere. There are some truly impressive moments during the single player campaign where the game nails the atmosphere of running into a warzone, but unfortunately it just doesn't capture this feeling all the way through. Several times at the start of a level you'll be presented with some huge vista, only to be funneled into a corridor level with few options for exploration and deviation. Thankfully, the online multiplayer is the meat of this game, and in this area, the game does not disappoint. There are a half dozen coop missions that parallel the main campaign, and these are fun for a play through or two with a friend. But the online deathmatch modes are where it's at. The maps are HUGE, and there are plenty of unlocks and awards to keep a player busy for many hundreds of hours. The gunplay feels good, the vehicles are fun, and there are some great game mechanics, such as suppression fire, and the ability to use smoke as cover or flashlights to blind an enemy, and tactical environment destruction. It's a technical masterpiece too, although I do wish there was an option to turn off the 'dirty camera lens' effects. Special mention has to be made of the sound in this game, the sound effects are spot-on. The bad points of the game - It's a jewel of a game wrapped up in a turd: Battlelog, and Origin. The install process is annoying. You have to have Origin installed, and if you install Origin off the DVD, it has to update immediately and restart before you can continue. Plus it requires installing a 500MB patch, then two web browser plug-ins for Battlelog, and you have to have the latest graphics drivers. Once through the pain of installation, Battlelog is tolerable for finding servers and friends, but feels like an ugly third party add-on matchmaking service. Is it too much to ask for a server browser that is well integrated into the game? The other annoyance - there's no LAN play, and this could be a deal breaker for some. Dice have hinted this might be patched into the game later, but don't hold your breath. It would be nice to be able play the multiplayer maps offline against 'bots, and on a LAN in coop with friends, like you could in Battlefield 2. If you can put up with the hassle of Origin and the Battlelog interface though, there's plenty of fun to be had here. Just don't buy this game for the single player only, you will be disappointed. If you do managed to get bored, there are other classes, vehicles, and strategies to try out to keep you interested for a long time. I've seen lots of reviews about glitches etc. (a lot based on the BETA...*cough*), but my experience has been flawless. Also, for anyone talking about a wealth of "hackers" already...I think you just need to practice a bit more.

Despite Battlefield being a multiplayer franchise, the singleplayer holds up nicely. It certainly is by no means groundbreaking. It tells a familiar story with the exact same structure as that of CoD: Black Ops, but nonetheless it is engaging with a few "wow" moments. Playing through on the "hard" setting I felt as though whenever I died it was fair, aside from one chapter with the old "endless wave until you advance" stage.

Overall, I give it a 9, because the singleplayer is fairly unimaginative (although lots of fun), but the multiplayer is a 10 (ignore co-op, it's short and basically a throwaway). Very solid.

You can drop dead in milliseconds and in some pretty unjust fashions, so watching where your teammates die and working with them to cover all sectors is vital to living relatively securely. If you do manage to have some cover in the midst of a conflict, the combat can get pretty intense and prolonged, explosions happen everywhere, bullets fly non-stop, and these moments make my day. The game really encourages saturating the enemy with bullets, which is fun. Who doesn't like shooting non-stop? The immersion is pretty fantastic if you ignore some movement and visual glitches that happen every so often. It runs well on my year old $600 computer, the sound is great, if not a little cacophonous. The teamplay is heart warming when it works, and being on top of the team by being the best team player is very rewarding. Think critically about helping your team, expect death at every corner, and you may take this game from a cool experience to a fun game.

This franchise isn't about singleplayer, so i'm not basing my score on that. As a multiplayer game it's unbeatable, well, you will know what i mean if you've ever played a BF game before. Vehicle combat is brilliant, lots of fun to be had with jets and tanks, and the anti-air vehicles (currently OP'd). Everything seems to be balanced with most vehicles as long as you have the right unlocks. Infantry wise, some of the unlocks might be OP'd, one being the IRNV (infra red scope), and another, the mortar. I'm not so sure the vehicle disablement feature works well but it's a new edition to the battlefield franchise and i welcome the change (it's optional depending on the server you join anyway). It doesn't work well with jets as i can never get a kill with one.

If i am to nit pic even further... the spawn system is bugged, the squad and spawn screens should have been better implemented, like in BF 2142. Jumping over obstacles doesn't always work as it should. It's a real shame not to see a proper BF intro but the implementation of battlelog is very much welcome as long as Dice sorts out all the bugs with it. The Commo Rose (Q button) needs to be patched asap.

I would have liked a few better modes instead of the usual Rush, TDM, and Conquest modes. Something like a Titan mode which can be found in 2142. Co-Op is a welcome edition, although i haven't played it much.

The game looks and sounds absolutely stunning. I didn't notice the low res textures that IGN pointed out, maybe they were looking at the monitor with a pair of pink frilly binoculars, or maybe i was reading a review of the console version? The sound is slightly better than BC2, which is really good.

Overall, it's one of the best FPS out there. I won't give it a ten because of the bugs and a few other things, but i'm sure the new patch will fix those.

DICE has really outdone themselves inHaving played all the Call of Duty titles and all of the Battlefield titles except for 2142, I have to say this is by far the most realistic, immersive, and harrowing online wargame I've ever played. The sound design, which has always been a hallmark of the Battlefield series, is so good that you feel like you're truly smack in the middle of a fight. DICE has really outdone themselves in this department. Graphically, it's about as good as it can look given the restrictions the aging Xbox and PS3 hardware has. Fantastic lighting and particulate effects and authentic and up to date vehicle design. I'm jealous that PC owners get to play this in all its DX 11 glory. If Battlefield 3 is this good on current gen consoles, I can't wait to see what the sequel looks like on next gen consoles! You have an insane amount of unlockables and seemingly unending ways you can spec your weapon loadout before you spawn in. There is essentially none of the silly killstreak rewards like RC bomb cars that Call of Duty has and it's better for it. DICE has spent a lot of time on game balancing and though some would whine and say this weapon is too powerful or too weak, if you are a student of the series you know there is always a counter to any given weapon system. If I had one complaint, it's that you can't create a squad of more than 4 people so it's trickier to get a crowd of people all in one game, but the addition of server browsing helps a lot and is a welcome addition that was heretofore exclusive to the PC crowd. The maps are big and well designed, the lone exception being Operation Metro which is just too narrow. Battlelog, which is the free equivalent of Call of Duty Elite, gives you comprehensive stat tracking and gives players social features like the ability to form platoons and post in forums. I would have like to have seen this integrated into the console software as it's only accessible from your PC, but if they had done it, you might not have had features like the forums since it can't be done on console for technical reasons. You do have access to some stats right from the console, but if you want to go really in-depth, log into Battlelog, it's FREE. If you preordered the game, DICE was kind enough to give you the first map pack and a selection of weapons for FREE, that's four maps, and four weapons, for FREE! I don't see Call of Duty doing anything like that, EVER. Speaking of which, the community of Battlefield is much more mature as the game really encourages teamwork so you have very little lone wolf BS that you get in Call of Duty. You have to work together; teams that don't lose, period. I'm about 2 hours into the campaign and so far it has been very good but a little derivative of Black Ops with the flashbacks but let's be honest here, people play Battlefield for the multiplayer. That's where it's at. That's the reason why Battlefield players are so loyal. That's the reason why the game is played long after the 6 hour campaign is over. I have over 500 hours logged in Bad Company 2, and this game will be no exception. So, even though we don't get the whole enchilada that PC players do because of our aging console tech, it's still one hell of a game and not to be missed. This gets my vote for shooter of the year and possibly Game of the Year(don't forget, Skyrim has yet to release;). Thank you DICE for putting together a truly stunning game. You guys never fail to disappoint. Now get to work on Battlefield 4 for the next generation...this one will keep me busy for the next 2-3 years easily! Expand

The quality of the features that it offers however, varies from game mode to game mode, ranging from average to good to incredible. The average is obviously the single player, which, apart from its tank section, is a complete rip-off of previous Call of Duty games, from the linearity of progression and the setpieces, to even the type of flashback storytelling we saw in CoD Black Ops just last year. And while this would have been ok if the story or action were any good, the plot feels limp and emotionless and the action doesn't offer anything as exciting as its competitors or even its other game modes. The good mode is the co-op mode, which is a slightly more story based version of MW2 spec-ops. Its good because it puts 2 players in some cool situations, like where one player is flying a helicopter while the other player is the gunner, but unfortunately there are too few missions to truly make this a fleshed out mode, meaning that once you have unlocked the co-op exclusive weapons for multiplayer, you probably won't come back for more. The incredible mode is the multiplayer, which is quite possibly the biggest, most frantic and explosive multiplayer in modern gaming. Up to 64 players each doing their thing, forming squads, taking over flags, ruining the enemy teams day, is what Battlefield multiplayer is all about and it is way more exciting than any other game simply because of how free-form it all is. The combat situations a player can potentially get into offer far more excitement than any linear single player can ever hope to, and with tons of unlockables for the 4 classes and for all the vehicles, there's plenty to keep coming back to for months on end. Overall, it's like I said. The single player is just average, the co-op is good, not great, but the multiplayer is what makes this game a real must-buy for every shooter fan. Expand

Happy to see some developers actually deliver a good product.
Graphics very good, Story is good and the missions as pilot and tank driver a nice change from the regular FPS. Compliments for a very good game.

Graphically is perfect, from the technical aspect it is close to photo-realistic, so frostbite 2 engine kick ass!!!
I didn't see any bug or issue at this time (nice!). The single player campaign is very good...

The game is actually quite good. Pros: Graphics, sound, high level of unlocks in multiplayer, Battlelog, overall multiplayer feels "fun." Cons: Occasional "wtf" moments in multiplayer can be very frustrating, gun recoil is a bit too high, hit reg still has a few issues, lower level guns suck.

Something I'd like to mention is the insane amount of XP needed to unlock the weapons and attachments in multiplayer. It's pretty crazy. You get an average of maybe 3k experience in one round, and some of the better unlocks require 200k just for a single unlock. Additionally, some guns can only be unlocked by gaining experience through co op missions. There are only 7 co op missions, and to do these each 3 or 4 times to unlock a single gun gets old really fast. Another issue is the fact that lower level guns and equipment sucks. Higher level guns are just way better than the ones you start out with. This makes it difficult to get started in the game, as you'll be constantly wiped out as you try to beat someone with a gun that's twice as good as yours. However, once you've played maybe 5 hours of multiplayer you'll have plenty of good enough weapons to hang with the top players (if you're good enough). I'd also like to mention destructibility and suppression. They add a whole lot to the game. Being under fire by a tank and suppressing fire as chips of concrete fly and walls crumble around you is a thrilling and frightening experience, one unique to Battlefield. Destroying a wall with an RPG and then rushing the defenders inside and wiping out a whole squad is exhilarating. It's moments like these that truly make this game so much fun.
Overall, the game is very well done. It really is a lot of fun and I enjoy the multiplayer a whole lot. Don't play this game a couple hours then give up. Stick with it, and I promise you'll end up enjoying one of (if not the) best first person shooter game on the market.

This game is amazingly fun and I will be spending months of play time on it. Origin server thing worried me at first and on the first day out was frustrating to get all my friends onto one server, now there is no problems. Ability to log-in anywhere to see stats and friends stats without having the game installed everywhere (ex. at my work) is great. My one problem is there is no squad voice chat in multiply player... it's okay I guess because my friends are using a third-party application and we can talk among ourselves. It's when my friends aren't playing, I wish there was a way to talk to your squad... it is a squad based shooter.

And all the negative user reviews: Here's the thing... If your computer is older than a year and don't want to invest in computer parts, don't buy this game... we who have money to modernize don't want you to play anyways. Other thing, I hate MW players that complain it's too hard... maybe because this game is too realistic and not an arcade shooter. I play both and MW is a run-and-shoot where BF is a think-and-shoot game.

It's all a matter of taste, after all. They each provide a certain type of entertainment – when talking about Battlefield 3, it involves a bigger game, more open in its possibilities and more spectacular. But on a longer timeline, less frantic and with fewer Bruce Willis scenes than the mass appeal beast it set itself to dethrone.

No, Battlefield 3 is not the best game of today. But good looking – definitely. It also has an absolutely addictive multiplayer. Who needs more? [Dec 2011]

Both a triumphant leap forward and a return to form for the Battlefield series. This is the best multiplayer shooter on PC. [Christmas 2011, p.58]
