This close to Christmas, Special Forces is probably for the game’s most loyal fans only — the folk who have played it so much that they are already desperate for new features to layer upon their already intense online experiences.
-
The game adds more of what Battlefield 2 fans liked from that game while adding enough factions, maps, vehicles, and weapons to make it a worthwhile purchase.
-
These supermen are capable of feats ordinary Battlefield grunts could only dream of, wielding 12 new firearms and racing across eight huge new maps in 10 new vehicles. Them's a lot of numbers, but then this is definitely no ordinary game. [GamesMaster]
-
One of the best FPS modern day war games to date, in my opinion. This expansion just adds to the realism allowing a more rounded arsenal and the use of some new tactics.

Game InformerThe hottest online shooter is now better than ever. Do yourself a favor and experience it firsthand. [Feb 2006, p.110]
-
If Digital Illusions could’ve ironed out some balancing issues and worked on the physics for the vehicles a little more, as well as denied the assault class a little bit of their overwhelming power, Special Forces would’ve probably been the best expansion pack to ever come straight out of a box without a patch or anything.
-
Pelit (Finland)Good enough to warrant purchase, but is it good enough to survive, unlike previous BF1942 add-ons? Climbing hook should appear in the basic game, too. [Jan 2006]
-
Battles in Special Forces are more discreet and intense than they were in the original sequel. These wars are fought not by large armies but by squads of specially trained infantry using the latest in weapons and military technology.
-
With its focus on infantry and urban combat, Special Forces delivers more of the intense and insanely fun Battlefield 2 gameplay; at least, it does if you can get it running.
-
If your only complaint about the core game was that it still seemed too quick, too "deathmatchy," then Special Forces is just the reinforcement the Commander ordered.
-
What you get with Special Forces boils down to a batch of maps (albeit well-designed ones), some slightly new weapons to choose from, and a few new vehicles. There is still only Assault: Conquest mode, which is largely why I don't recommend to those of you who didn't dig BF2.
-
AceGamezA decent enough expansion that's worthy enough of the Battlefield name, while at the same time providing a different enough experience to avoid an overly familiar feeling.
-
It’s all the little changes that make the game more enjoyable and more squad-friendly. A few of the armies are a bit repetitious, but the skins and voice work are unique enough to give each army an independent presence.
-
BoomtownThe new maps nicely supplement the old ones and the expansion adds plenty of mileage for fans of the game.

Computer Games MagazineWhat Special Forces lacks in innovation, it more than makes up for in new maps. [Mar 2006, p.50]
-
PC GamerUnacceptable bugs and slowdown detract from an otherwise great expansion pack. [Feb 2006, p.36]
-
With a few technical issues aside, if you are a fan of Battlefield 2, you will still want to grab this expansion; if only for the new weapons, vehicles, and stuff to do.
-
Feels more like a tacked-on "fix" for some issues than a true expansion.
-
EA have, just as they did with "Battlefield 2," released an unfinished game full to the brim with bugs and annoyances.
-
Effective, brutal and full of hard-as nails military posture, it's a decent expansion pack to one of the best games of the year.
-
The game does little to add to the original title.
-
We expect more for thirty dollars. We want loads of maps, more meaningful lighting, more classes, more new vehicles and maybe a play mode other than Conquest. It's probably worth another tour of duty, but we wouldn't rush to enlist.
-
The most astute comment I've heard about Battlefield 2 still applies to Special Forces: everything about it sucks except for the actual game.
-
Players who've enjoyed the Battlefield franchise for its signature rollicking vehicular combat can skip this expansion altogether.
-
Computer Gaming WorldA few patches from fun. [Feb 2006, p.72]
