Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is at its best when it encourages you to be patient and focus on discovering its world, taking in the strange shapes of its trees and plants, while uncovering Na’Vi stories and customs. Easily the best way to experience the universe envisioned by James Cameron, it’s also a fun enough take on a FarCry game, albeit not one that refreshes Ubisoft’s tired formula nearly enough. Combat feels loose and, before long, clearing outposts or fighting the same few types of enemies will have you inevitably yearning to head back out in search of new wondrous sights. Exploration alone makes Frontiers of Pandora worth playing – especially if you’re an established fan of the universe – but, much like the RDA’s pollution suffocates the life out of its surroundings, mechanical tedium inevitably and unfortunately drags things down in the long run.

The remarkable visuals, which have been the primary factor contributing to the success of the Avatar series, are also evident in the game. However, the game's visibility is among the lowest, and the overall gaming system doesn't appear to be particularly outstanding. The potential is high, but it doesn't seem to deliver the expected level of performance.

While the game isn't reaching the same heights as the Sarentu Na'vi we're playing, it's still, somehow, one of the best experiences I've had in 2023. This is, without a doubt, the best showcase for the Snowdrop Engine.

The world of Pandora offers enormous potential for a video game, and Massive Entertainment has fully exploited that potential with an open game world characterized by fantastic natural environments and stunning details. Unfortunately, the hackneyed missions and shallow combat get in the way of a truly compelling open-world adventure, making the game feel like a mediocre copy of Far Cry in terms of gameplay.

I feel like there is a lot to love about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. There truly is an amazing world to get lost in and forget about the rest of the game. However, it seems like that may be what the developers did. The team went full tilt on aesthetics and worldbuilding, and nailed it. However, the monotony of the combat and many quests takes away from the overall experience. So no, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora isn’t a soulless Far Cry clone. There is love and care put into recreating James Cameron’s world. However, once the awe of wandering Pandora eventually wears off, you’re left with a game that doesn’t have as much going on as it should in a world this vast and alive.

For gamers with a current gen console or powerful PC, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an incredible-looking open world experience. It is a seamless extension of the films, which will appeal to many fans. But underneath all that flash, flora, and fauna is a lack of imagination and unsatisfying FPS combat. Pandora’s lovingly recreated beauty contains mystery, power and a fair amount of disappointment.

It may be Far Cry by any other name but if you’re an Avatar fan, that’s always dreamed of exploring Pandora for yourself, this hits all of the right notes.

Even if we appreciate how Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora tries to give fans an experience similar to living the movies in first-person, all its excessive problems serve to point out that, in case we need to say it, developing a compelling videogame is way different from making a successful movie.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora features a stunning alien world to explore with a refreshingly uncluttered approach to navigation, countless enemy bases to destroy and Na’vi clan sidequests to complete, and no shortage of exotic flora and fauna to harvest and hunt. However, its combat is pretty one-dimensional, its mission design is a bit on the repetitive side, and its environment is generally lacking in any major surprises beyond visual splendor, meaning that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a solid shooting adventure that’s more inside the box than truly out of this world.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is a very good experience, if not a truly excellent one. Ubisoft wants to sell us a colossal AAAA, but the truth is that it's rather a solid AAA. It's based on excellent foundations, and has managed to personalize enough things we've seen everywhere else to draw us into its universe, but the most fussy will not be fooled, or will only be fooled for a few hours. The game quickly shows its limitations. Yes, the world is magnificent, the art direction borrowed from the movies is incredible, the music, always in keeping with the theme, takes your breath away and you enjoy the journey. The main storyline takes care of itself, as do the side quests. But the pacing problem and a number of other little things, such as a less-than-stellar FR dubbing, technical glitches and a shaky AI, quickly bring us back to reality. The game lacks polish, even though it's teeming with details that make it extremely faithful to the universe it's based on. All in all, an excellent adaptation, but also a good open-world action game.

The idea of Avatar being mixed into this formula is great, and when you're flying on your ikran, it's an intoxicating experience, even if aspects of the combat and game stability leave something to be desired.

The world opens up nicely as you play as well, gaining things like a flying Ikran to soar high over the trees, or opening up the map to introduce new areas and ecosystems just as you're starting to get comfortable with what you know. There is an occasional lack of clarity with things like guidance not always being crystal – wooly tracking missions being a prime example. However, the vibrancy of the world and the pure alienness of almost everything you encounter make Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora an enjoyable place simply to exist in, with all its otherworldly environments and creatures adding freshness the mechanics lack.

If you’re coming into Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora purely as a fan of the films, then there’s a lot for you to get out of this – it lets you explore the world like never before and take part in the culture it created for the first time. However, if you care about it more as a video game first, then it’s nothing special. Ubisoft yet again refuses to make any steps forward when it comes to open-world design, even when given free rein to make something wild and fantastical like Pandora should be.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora successfully brings the world of Pandora to video games in a big way. It’s lush and vibrant and without a doubt one of the most luxuriant open worlds that Ubisoft has ever created. Its gameplay, on the other hand, is lacking the spark that makes great open worlds sing. Fans of the franchise will absolutely adore exploring everything this previously unexplored side of Pandora has to offer, just don’t expect it to reinvent the wheel.

I really wanted to like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora more than I did, but the game's various shortcomings make it difficult to love entirely. The exceptional graphics and brief moments of greatness make it worthwhile for Avatar fans, but most anyone else is likely to be frustrated by how close it comes to doing something special only to fall shy of its potential.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a technical marvel due to its gorgeous open world with an alluring atmosphere that calls for exploration, but is unfortunately hindered by the “sameness” of Ubisoft open-world games from the past decade. It offers some new elements like wilder parkour sequences and more hunting oriented gameplay, but not even remotely enough to be hailed as something new or innovative.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a successful movie adaptation in the sense that it offers very smooth gameplay and a beautiful world to explore. It's also a very rewarding experience to explore Pandora. When you are fighting the RDA or making your way through the world, you feel very much a Na'vi, but all the local terminology can be very confusing. Unfortunately, frequent framedrops and crashes somewhat spoiled our experience on PC, preventing the game from delivering the magical experience it could have.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is going to appeal the most to die-hard fans of the film series. The ability to ride some of the creatures of Pandora and take in the lush surroundings of the moon are more than enough to satisfy those who want to wander around and soak in everything. For everyone else, the game is simply decent. The missions are very hit-and-miss in quality and execution, while the ability to use human and Na'vi weapons isn't as appealing as the developers may have expected. The world looks gorgeous, but navigating it isn't that intuitive due to a poor map and navigation system, and that also goes for other elements, like hunting and gathering. The game isn't terrible or as bleak as the first title, but you'll need to temper expectations to get some enjoyment out of Frontiers of Pandora.

The appreciation for James Cameron's creation is undeniable from an aesthetic point of view. Walking or flying through the forests of Pandora is a great experience and, without a doubt, the closest anyone can get to feeling like a Na'vi. However, this visual exquisiteness serves to immerse the player in an extremely repetitive gameplay loop that doesn't even try to hide this fact. Depthless missions, unimpressive characters and an uninspired narrative make you feel that, to relive the Avatar experience, the best alternative is to re-watch the movies.

The predictable, mechanical side of Frontiers of Pandora pervades every aspect of this visually impressive experience and stands in stark contrast to the wonderfully organic and vibrant environment. It's two sides that don't fit well with each other, don't belong together - the movies made this part of their central message.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora is a gorgeous realisation of James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, but uncreative open-world game mechanics, unlikeable characters and a dull story hold back the game’s potential.

This is a well-made Avatar game. If you’re fond of the James Cameron films, then you’re in for a real treat, while even Avatar apostates will probably find something to enjoy amid Pandora’s dense undergrowth. But there are better examples of this form, and if you’re not all-in on the Na’vi way of life, you’ll be gritting your teeth through their tedious stories.

Pandora looks inviting but turns out to be nothing but nice décor with which we can barely interact in meaningful ways. The gameplay on the other hand primarily consists of missions and mechanics that do not respect the audience’s time and simply aren’t fun.

A beautiful but only slightly above-average amalgamation of every imaginable Ubisoft game, additionally crushed on PC by an endless stream of technical issues. Fans of the movie source material may find pleasure, but aside from the fantastic visuals, it has little to offer to others.

There are lots of design choices I didn’t mesh with in Frontiers of Pandora. I love the world, but barriers blocked me from fully immersing myself in it, and it’s littered with activities and outposts plucked straight out of the 2010s and planted in Pandora’s soil.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gives you the strength and stamina of the Na’vi, but not the consistency and depth of their homeworld. Unless you’re an avid fan who wants every morsel of storytelling, Ubisoft's latest open world doesn’t always justify the trip.

While it has some novel ideas, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's extremely repetitive quest design, underwhelming progression, and wholly monotonous gear system make it one of the most forgettable open world games of 2023.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora tries to have its cake and eat it too. It wants to respect James Cameron’s cinematic vision by adapting Na’vi culture to an interactive medium while still packing in every open-world action trope possible. For a story about a race that only takes what it needs from nature, Frontiers of Pandora sure seems obsessed with excess.

Overall, Avatar is a strangely designed game that offers something different than you would expect from an action-adventure game in this world. Not an action adventure, it's more of a survival effort and slow stealth combat. But in no area is it fully fleshed out. But the world itself is handled very nicely.

As gorgeous as it is, though, even a pair of 3D glasses wouldn't make the action any more entertaining to sit through. [Issue#393, p.106]

Frontiers of Pandora's stunning presentation and fantastic world design are failed by atrocious technical issues.

In the face of an IP filled with rich themes with something important to say, Frontiers of Pandora ignores the point entirely and goes on to have a gameplay loop where players spend most of their time killing otherwise docile animals to make arbitrary numbers go up so they can be as immortal as possible within the confines of the game. This would be business as usual for any other open-world gameplay loop, but it's embarrassingly ironic and tone-deaf for an Avatar game. Sure, anti-pollution sentiments are there because it's impossible to make an Avatar spin-off without them, but they're there superficially and treated as a checkbox for players to complete - ultimately ringing hollow. A betrayal of Cameron’s themes with the Avatar IP, seemingly stapled together as an attempt to get a slice of the highest-grossing film of all time’s pie, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora isn’t just generic; it is downright cynical.

At the end of the day, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora just feels like a game that’s been made a million times before. You run around and grab resources, craft items, fill out skill trees, shoot bad guys, and search for sets of similar landmarks as you explore a massive map. But it’s all Avatar-flavored, so it’s blue and there are giant cat people running around alongside the humans.

Even as much as James Cameron’s epic films can be taken to task for not building a strong enough story worthy of the big, beautiful world at their center, Frontiers of Pandora repeats Cameron’s mistakes as well as those of Ubisoft, which is infinitely more disappointing.
