Spent 170 hours on Valhalla. This game is very solid. It has to be one of the best open worlds ever created. It is beautiful, stunning at times. Music and score is nice, really immersive. I must say Ubisoft is trying to listen to the critics, because I see some improvements within the franchise. Quests are a little better, dialogs don't seem as stupid as it used to be in Odyssey. Game is a little bit more RPGish now, but is still has a lot of flaws. I liked how different weapons create different combat feeling, but crafting system in general felt odd. I literally levelled up first random set I found and kept it for the entire game. This is how unnecessary crafting was. I liked the blue mysteries on the map. These unique stories were a great idea to fill the map with content. The number of alliances to form was a madness though. I finished this game a week ago, and I can remember maybe two plots of these regional quests. Halfdan in Donecaestre and maybe crimes of Lunden. I never thought I would ever say, that game can be too big, but Valhalla clearly is. It makes you tired. And repetition kills all the brilliance of it. I would be happy to give it a score of 9 if Ubisoft made it around 20% smaller, and made the story stand out a little more. Expand

Except for the crashes, they were all minor concerns for me.
I'm enjoying the game, but the story, writing, and dialogues are all mediocre. There's no real goal, nothing to propel you forward, and you're basically doing the **** for other people over and over again.
The gameplay is enjoyable, but not exceptional, and this is not an AC. It's attempting to link it to the franchise, but it's simply not possible; the parkour is so constrained that 90% of what you could do in unity is lost here.

Imagine being on a wall, looking behind you, and wanting to leap from the wall to another ledge, which is something you can do in every previous game, but you can't do it here. It's quite frustrating.
The hidden blade is practically useless; there is no incentive to go stealth other than to waste time. Eivor isn't even a member of the creed.

There are 5 songs on the boat; I couldn't find anyway to find find or unlock more; imagine sailing for 50 hours with the same 5 songs or just the sound of the water.

Eivor isn't really engaging or charismatic. He serves no actual function other than to serve as a slave to everyone.

Upgrades and all of the weapons' stats and runes seem pointless; all you need is XP and skills to get genuine power.

    So many micro-transactions my god.

This game is so simple, merely reaching the required strength level allows you to demolish anything... To find any challenges, I had to play in a higher power level zone.

This game is empty, no loot drop nothing, and I've discovered 5 weapons in 35 hours.

Technically, the game looks decent, but not great, and visually, it's just plain uninteresting. I'm using HDR, and I'm not sure if the game is bugged, but the colors are occasionally very flat.

Since Unity, I haven't really like any ac, but this one was quite interesting. I adore the Vikings, their history, mythology, and gods, but I doubt I would have played as long if I hadn't already learned about and enjoyed the period. I would have definitely stopped after 5 hours.

I'd like to talk about how this game handles gods, but it would be a major spoiler, and I'm not a fan.

If you're a long-time fan of AC, you'll probably dislike it, or if you do, it won't be the greatest for you.

If you like the new style of ac and odyssey, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. There's less grinding and a level cap, which is a plus.

This game tries to accomplish a lot of things, but it doesn't do any of them better than any other game. It's just okay, so I'll give it a 5.

So, while the games is better than Odyssey, being better than awful does not make you good. I've played every single Assassin's Creed game, and each one has done something that has stayed with me. The music, gameplay, story, writing, and so on. After 25 hours, Valhalla had done nothing to amaze me, no times where I stayed and thought, 'Wow, this is fantastic.'

It doesn't do anything differently from any other action game. And it certainly does not outperform the most well-known RPG on the market.

It's a shame because Valhalla has so much potential, and we all know that ubisoft can achieve greatness and has done so in the past.

But it appears like Ubisoft is simply not trying; they're settling for good enough. They're overly concentrated on developing as many games and microtransactions as possible in order to generate as much money as possible... They're on the wrong track, and I don't want to see the gaming business follow suit.

Moreover, the protagonist is well-balanced, witty and relatable, while, at the same time, (s)he allows some room for role playing. I really liked Kassandra in Odyssey and I didn't believe that they could actually match that, but they did (plus the fact that Magnus Bruun is great as Eivor, better than Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra imo whose performance was good, but uneven). The supporting cast is good as well, with very few exceptions. Last but not least, I really liked the spooky/mystic atmosphere of the game, Ubisoft nailed it in this aspect (the phenomenal soundtrack helps a lot with this of course).

So, why did I give it a 7, instead of an 8 or a 9? The main reasons are the following 3:

    1. Lack of refinement. This is classic Ubisoft. They craft these amazing open worlds, they put so much effort and passion and love, but they sabotage themselves by not allowing a few more months of production to cover that extra mile and achieve greatness. And in order to achieve greatness you have to tend to the details as thoroughly as possible, take care of those little things very few people notice if they are there, but many people notice if they are not.

    2. The combat is a mixed bag for me. On the one hand they fixed the main issue I had with Odyssey (enemy sponges), on the other the combat doesn't always "connect", it often feels awkward and disjointed. Also, it's too exaggerated/arcadey for my taste (for instance, the heavy attack usually flings the enemies 5-6 meters away, wtf). I think this was the perfect opportunity for a more grounded, tight and impactful combat system which would significantly add to the immersion. Sadly, they missed it.

    3. It drags far too long; obviously this is completely subjective, but I felt that the game would've been far better if they'd removed some of the fat (which, imo, is about 10-15 hours of unnecessary content).

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying my time with the game. It's a good game. Unfortunately though, it has some serious issues which I think Ubisoft has the knowledge, experience and resources to address, but they didn't. And this is not the 1st time, it is actually the rule rather than the exception with all of their games.

    That's all, Severouss out.

Like most of the AC games, this one also has a good beginning and ending.
And like the last 2 games, it has an almost dead and soulless open world which gets extremely boring as you feel like you're killing puppets while you're killing guards as the game progresses.
Combat is a bit better than odyssey but the AI needs a LOT of work.

A buggy mess. I could barely get into it before giving up. Either the visuals are ugly or they're glitched as hell because they look like a major downgrade on my pc. And I get occasional major framerate drops which force me to quit the game.

It MIGHT be good in six months to a year, when the game has been polished to a playable state. Until then, DO NOT BUY.

Alright, I tried. I tried really hard to like this game that I waited for. But 15 hours in? I just spent six months waiting for a game that is worse than its predecessor in every conceivable way.

Graphics? Worse. My freaking horse looks like something out of an early PS2 game. Next to nothing but empty forest, and half of that is literally just that: EMPTY forest. I might see one or two deer travelling for three days. Brilliant.

Controls? Clunkier. Eivor is far less responsive than both Bayek and Kassandra/Alexios, and reminds me of trying to play ACIII on PC. It typically takes at least ten seconds to get him to start climbing, to jump down, to get in his boat, to captain his boat... Holy hell it's bad.

Characters? Eivor isn't a character. He's literally 'Insert Male Mary Sue Here' man. He's a fighter, and he's a skald. He's okay with everything and anything, but he's honorable. He's reckless, impulsive, and hot-headed... But also a tactician, cunning, and patient. The two Assassins are boring, and I can't find myself caring about either of them enough to care about their 'twist' that's coming. The only relatively interesting one so far is Sigurd, and I'm 90% confident that's only because out of the rest of the characters, he's somewhat consistent.

The plot? What plot? Vikings sail to England, build colony. Vikings help take over England. End of plot. Like... sure, I get that there's a bunch more stuff end-game, but I legitimately can't even bring myself to care what it is, because I've spent the last 15 hours bored out of my mind, as I get to act out the History Channel's documentary on Vikings.

So I have awful graphics, clunky controls, no characters, and no plot. How did Ubisoft go backwards with this game? Like, I'll give it three stars because hey... It's an AC game, and it wasn't awful -it was just the worst one out of the last 5 released.

From the first trailer I had a impression: they took AC: Odyssey and changed skin for the NPC's and the map. And I was not so wrong.

The game has its differential and its identity, but it is practically the same game with a different appearance, and a story of its own. Several animations are the same, movements, bugs during movement ...

The story is interesting at one point, but with a few "holes" like a "master killer" simply giving a stranger a hidden blade, although they "try" to justify it later, it is still quite strange in terms of lore.

The game has the problem that all AC's since Origins have been having, and getting worse, the game extends too long, there comes a time, when you can't stand playing the game anymore and practically activates the subtitles to see what the NPC's are going to say and skip the cutscenes, instead of the old ones that you were either satisfied with or wanted more from the game.

A point that bothered me a lot, is that at first it seemed interesting how you have a map and choose where you want to go first, this is really fantastic, but what it seems is that each employee was responsible for a part and did not communicate with others what was supposed to happen, for example, Eivor pissed off with some events in an area, which end up even worse, so you have 2 options, continue to the area designated as next, or make another turn to get allies, if you want to get allies, he isn’t pissed off and tries to do everything as quickly as possible to resolve the unfinished business in the previous area, he’s laughing, having fun, talking nice, or anything, and when you come back he's all mad again that you have to do everything as quickly as possible without thinking, swords up and plans are not necessary, and you're like: WTF?

The game is full of bugs, the game crashes, saves corrupt, quick travel is disabled, npcs bug and do not allow to continue a mission, some missions do not complete (I saw cases on youtube, where the guy can not deliver the last mission of the game, because it bugged the conversation with the NPC).

Secondary activities, at first glance, are fun, here called mysteries and artifacts, but 2 of them reach a point that became a nuisance ...
One of them is to run after a papyrus, as in the old games for example AC3, however, there was more "stuck" the issue of parkour, here as everything is scalable, it is very easy for Eivor to stop somewhere, try to climb where shouldn't, and you lose the papyrus and have to do it all over again.
Another is to stack some stones, at the beginning it is fun, relaxing, but it comes to some points in the game, that the type of balance has to be so perfect, in such a specific order of stones, that it is more angry than calming

And on the PC in particular, Ubisoft decided that no game of hers will have Achievments anymore, that for those who don’t care OK but for those who like it, don’t take the PC version, they justified that it was altered by such "challenges" , while on consoles there are 40 ~ 50 achievements, on Uplay there are 10 ~ 20 "challenges" that are things you don’t even have to try to do, like "complete the area, complete the mission", mandatory things, you it kind of ends the game with 100%, there are no achievements like "make all the mysteries of the world", they are simply things related to the main campaign, taking away every challenge from those who liked to put 100% with some real challenges.

Assassin's creed Valhalla is getting back on track in terms of history, especially with the "current" time, however, it is still a game mess, which does not know if it wants to be an RPG or an AC (even because you do not play with an assassin) for the 2nd game in a row, since Origins is the origin so it’s acceptable, you end up as one), where they only use the game’s “fabula” to justify an RPG, full of microtransactions from clothes full of effects, to resource boosts , in addition to the rapid devaluation of the game, on launch day (in my local currency) it was necessary 199BRL for the base game, with nothing, 40 days later, the game with all DLC's is coming out for 219BRL, leaving to whom is the saga fans , with muggle face.

Wait for a promotion, wait for the bugs to be 100%, play with patience, because one hour you will be playing out of obligation, and not for fun.

But why did i gave it a 7? Because as always there are some problems, and because it's Ubisoft the problems are the ones that you can find in every other AC game, the animations brake so easily, everything is bugged, it's really rare to do a combat or watch a cutscene where everything goes as planned, 2nd thing is that the map is too big, i mean it's really too enormous, and there are many maps!!! We have England, Norway, Asgard and one more that i have to explore, i mean thats really a lot, and maybe a little bit too much... Anyway this AC is really good, it feels like an AC finally, the reason of my 7 are as always with ubisoft the technical problems that the game has, but really good, Ubi please keep it up for the next games. What should be an intense 50 hour game with variety and a gripping story is drawn out into a 100 hour fetch quest of unnecessary loot items, side tasks, map marker hunting, and going backwards and forwards across a beautiful, but excessively large map. If you have the time, it is recommended, but expect half of that time to be fluff and filler.

I'm a Assassin's Creed fan. I've been playing since AC1. I played 1-3 then took a break for awhile (mostly because I didn't have a console during those years) and picked it back up with AC: Origins. I really like how immersive and detailed these worlds are and are like take a walk through history. Origins I 100%ed. Odyssey I played continuously so much that I reconquered territories because the battlefield combat was so much fun.
So what do I think about Valhalla? Valhalla seems to take every single aspect of every past AC game and shoves it into one game but in a diminished aspect. Then they fill they game with so much bloat it is overwhelming. Examples: your eagle from past games is back as a raven but is completely useless except for finding ONLY iron ore deposits. The ship mechanic from Black Flag and Odyssey is back but with zero combat and acts a giant horse for transporting your raiding crew. The hierarchy hit list is back but is crammed with, I kid you not, 48!!!! targets. Skills trees are back in the form of Skyrim's constellation but with, no joke, over 500 skill nodes! The problem is is that they are mostly just small stat buffs that you need to plow through to get to the occasional actual skill. There are maybe 40 abilities but I've found only 2 that are useful, like the Leap Attack and the Dog attack.
There is some good stuff to find here. The mini games are some of the best I've played recently. All of them are fun and never get boring. The world is still pretty beautiful but the engine is starting to show it's age. On PC the game has crashed more on me than any game I've played on my current rig. Raids are great. It's a blast to storm castles with your viking crew and tear through the opposition.
But the negatives outweigh the positives here. It seems that Ubisoft concentrated on quantity over quality. The map is huge with little POIs all over the place. But 90% are simple treasure chests with the same repetitive loot of iron, leathers and/or goods. To get to these chests you usually have a mini puzzle that involves finding your way past a barred or locked door. I think it would be more rewarding to have fewer puzzles that are longer/more difficult but with greater and more special rewards.
Here's the list of krap that has been crammed into this game Village building, hunting, fishing, raiding, hit lists, assassin missions, Asgard storyline, mini-games, and I'm sure there's lots I'm forgetting. A lot of stuff with very little of it interesting.
TLDR: It's just too much. I'm at power level 200 with half of the map unlocked and I feel like the game isn't showing me anything new at this point.
Now I want to address the obvious campaign by Ubisoft to boost their user score with hundreds of 10 ratings. Accounts that only review Valhalla... on all platforms with the same written review. When I read the negative reviews by real players they all state some flaw that I've seen in the game, which is a way I can tell it's a real review. Review bombing by corporations is disgusting. Just make a better game and the reviews take care of themselves.

Another issue, they claim the game was made by a team of all religions, but i had some side quests which were simply mockery of christianity. Robbing abbeys for monetary gains is kind of ok for me in a viking game but the side quest about a monk north of middletun for example that's plain mockery. Well it seems to make quite a lie out of the disclaimer about different beliefs and genders. Some weapon animations are also rather ridiculous if you think about it. The final attack with a spear combo for example. The sweeping motion might be an interesting idea with a light saber but with a wooden staff it's simply ridiculous. Expand

    - Music: No notable hits, but gives a great vibe. 6/10
    - Sound effects: Combat sounds are somewhat satisfying, but the level up/large chest opening sound is rather annoying. Nothing remarkable. 6/10

    Gameplay: 6/10

    - Controls (ease of use): Very clunky, but parrying and blocking is responsive at least. Climbing and generally just moving is a frustrating experience. 6/10
    - Unique systems: Levelling up feels like a chore. The raid mechanic is a welcome addition. Nothing really new to be honest. 6/10
    - Difficulty (settings, scaling, etc.): Played on the hardest combat and stealth difficulty. Stronger enemies and bosses have an annoying amount of health, but their damage is rather forgiving with good armour and 2-3 portions of HP refill. 7/10

    - World design: Trademark Ubisoft copy and paste, rather empty and lifeless world. NPCs do not seem to have a daily routine, they just walk around. Not too convincing. 6/10
    - Story/Lore: not ready to comment yet.

    Technical: 5/10

    - Optimization: Really bad, worse than the previous 2 games. Kind of playable but 60 FPS is impossible. 5/10

The start is somewhat great, then it goes south. Let alone that it's ahack & slay game, as the 2 previous ones.
Too much repeating quests, and 16 alliances ... boring as hell after the first few.
They didn't forget to add good sidequests, they just labeled them mandatory main quests for allies.

It altogether feels very bland and uninteresting. I will say the character detail, and armor/clothing customization and upgrading system is excellent. I just wish there was more choices of sets compared to odyssey where you could have 30+ entirely unique outfits. Onto the story of Valhalla: it’s not good. You have essentially no choice in various outcomes that Ubisoft makes you think matter. The entire arc as a whole is just so unbelievably dry and devoid of flavor. The romance options feel very forced, and like I said, in many cases no matter what decisions you make the game already has a predetermined outcome. I wanted to love this game, Origins was just a glimpse into the masterpiece that was Odyssey, and I hoped Valhalla would go even further, but it didn’t. It’s worth picking up if it goes on sale, but at full price and compared to previous iterations it’s not that great of a game. Expand

The "collectables" flung across the map in uninteresting locations are an excellent touch to the dull design. The combat system is not garbage but it is not at all good. Enemies can spam all abilities while you are left to kite them around until you get enough stamina to do a single hit then kite them around some more. The stealth is pointless and horribly done for an Assassin's Creed game, there is not corner hiding at all, no ducking under cover but they added gore. The only thing it seems Ubisoft focused on was accessibility features. Menu narration, have no idea why that is a feature, text size, among other frivolous features that really add nothing and seem to have been the studios focus. No worth while investigation, no getting to know the citizens of the area and helping them out for the greater good, its so far from what the series used to be it shouldn't even be Assassin's Creed.

In short, more from acquaintances AC.

The game looks beautiful. Fighting is fun and feels great 80% of the time.
But then comes the typical AC / Ubisoft problem, the quest design. An effort has been made, but it feels irrelevant and repetitive and too long. Each area has its quest line and they are not exciting.

Let alone the buggy mess taht the game was on launch day : several major bugs were preventing gamers from completing the story.

Ubisoft also decided it was a good idea to ad microtransactions to the game after it's launch. ALso changing the level scaling a few months after launch at the same moment aas they launched an XP boost seems a little too convenient.

Stealth is completely useless in this game. Several ressources require you to launch full-blown raids on enemy camps therefore completely anihilating the assassin's way.

Never have ifalt like i've wasted so many hours of my life before. If I knew the game only revolved around a few pivotal cutscenes i would have spared my money and time and just watched a summary online.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well... I don't know where to start... Oh I do, the game is just not fun. You can have some sensations discovering for few hours but when you see that this edition brings nothing new compared to Odyssey except farming ressources and dull quests to gain tokens to buy different gear that doesn't change anything to combat, well where is the fun ? Plus the game has even more bugs that Odyssey, major bugs that can prevent you from advancing in the "story" if we can say story because if there wasn't any it would not change anything to the game. It's the same thing over and over, go to a land, talk with the same types of npc, kill some guys and repeat. Where you go doesn't matter at all, the feeling is the same. Do I mentioned that we're not even an assassin ? Just a detail in ASSASSIN's creed.
So I can say that the game, when I retry to play and advance, bores me to death. It's just a very lazy move by Ubisoft who delivered a bad Odyssey with a viking and bet that it would be enough to make money and they were right, good for them, bad for the players. If gamers keep praising this type of lazy work (I didn't buy it, it's been offered to me to be clear), that's all we will have in the future and that's pretty sad. Please Ubisoft wake up and try working on your game between 2 editions and it's time once again to rethink your formula for the franchise.

You want to take a break and try some side content? Why of course, here are your low-quality low-effort "world events" that will baffle you by their presentation more often than by their actual content.

And, unlike in Odyssey, this time I'm actually sad about all this. Eivor grew on me immensely in the course of the game, as did the combat system. Raids lost their appeal after about the fifth one I did but still were a welcome distraction from the monotonous story quests. And the world itself is incredible, lush and vibrant in ways not many games can achieve. Too bad, then, that it overstays its welcome for about 10-20 hours (of purely story-related content).

Ubisoft really need to scale down. Valhalla shows that, if their heart is in the right place and the writers actually care about the story, new AC installments can come very close to the legendary ones like AC2, Black Flag and Unity. But as long as they keep making the games more and more bloated and padded with completely arbitrary fluff, aimed at making you skip the grind by buying things at the store to finally FINALLY progress the damn story, they'll stay in this weird limbo of "ah yes, yet another Assassin's Creed game".

I find it absolutely amazing how Ubisoft managed to make the viking age, probably one if the most exciting (and controversial) ages in history, BORING AS HELL.

"How do you do that?" you ask? Let me tell you:

Let's start with the raids - you know, the thing where vikings pillaged hundreds of monasteries, towns and villages across England, slaughtering, raping and torturing thousands of innocent people while stealing everything in sight. Well Ubisoft, for good reason, decided that those raids probably wouldn't sit well with too many people, and I get that. I do. I don't want to rape or torture anyone, not even in a video game, so I expected the raids to be a bit more tame. I just didn't realise how tame. Kill a civilian? DESYNCHRONIZED. Loot a monastery filled with gilded treasure? +1 CARBON INGOT. Ransack an entire village? 400+ SUPPLIES. Rinse, and repeat. New raid, same deal. After 2 raids, you've seen it all. There's nothing new to do, to get or to see. I'd rather not.

Well, how about the gameplay at least? Fun? No. Unless pressing less than three buttons gets you going, the combat in Valhalla is absolutely laughable. No challenge at all, no rewarding 'UMPH' when you wack an enemy between the eyes with your two-feet long greatsword. That goes for climbing as well. Press 'A' and move foward and watch as Eivor climbs mountain-sides as smooth as marble with ease and jumps sixty feet from the top of a building, only to land safely and unharmed. Oh wait, sometimes he limps for about three seconds berfore he can sprint again. I'm not saying that parkour should be hard, it is an AC game after all, but there is no challenge to climbing AT ALL. Back in AC2, you needed to do different combos to reach certain places, and it could be a bit tricky sometimes, but it felt REWARDING. Also, you couldn't climb **** mountains. In Valhalla, if they added a building made entirely out of giant sheets of mirrors, I bet Eivor could climb it while scratching his ass at the same time. Yawn

While Unity had its flaws, it did one thing right. Combat was hard. For an Assassin's Creed game at least. If you were outnumbered, you'd better get the hell out of there or buckle up, cause you'd be in for a hell of an ass kicking. It forced you to think like, oh I don't know, an ASSASSIN?

Okay, well, the story has been the strong point of AC, except for the last few maybe - how is it in this? I'll tell you. There isn't much. It starts of great, with a strong opening that really has you longing to get to England. Once you get there, you start recruiting allies. And then you recruit more allies. And then a few more. And a few more. Currently, I have made alliances with 4 kings and two armies - how many alliences does my podunk in the middle of nowhere need? It's not like they've taken the time to add any meaningful trading with other cities, so what's the **** point of these damn alliances?

Through all of my time playing Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, I kept thinking 'What's the point?'.

Why do I need to weaken someones army, when I can run through their entire city unscathed and open the door for my useless battering ram and the rest of my men, who for some reason cannot die? Why do I need to upgrade the village beyond the blacksmith, when all I get is an increase to a 'Feast' buff that I don't need to use? Why do I need a Jomsviking when it has no effect on my crew at all? Why do I need to change my crew when none of them are different from each other?

There's no threat, no sense of urgency to any of it. So, what's the point Ubisoft? I can live with you not making Assassin's Creed games be about assassins, but you better have a good reason for it. This game is a BORE from start to finish, and now I'm really scared, because if you managed to make vikings boring, there's no telling what you'll ruin next.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.
