At least this game works perfectly unlike this Cybertrash 2077 that was promoted as next generation of open world games. AC Valhalla is very good game and using any booster is absolutely optional. You get xp everywhere, there absolutely no need to use them.

Ubisoft don't listen these haters who whine under every youtube video that Valhalla sucks and "only AC 1 to 3 are good". These people are not your real fans. Only reason i even started caring about AC series was AC 4. Making AC 4 is literally best decision Ubisoft has ever done. I'm so, so, so glad that this Desmond **** went finally away. Reason most people play these games i going back in time, not some modern day nonsense. I wish these games never had modern day, but it is what it is, thankfully AC games got so much better starting with AC 4. AC 3 was just horrible. Ubisoft, you should only listen to your real fans, not this minority who doesn't even care about anything you have done since 2013. They are almost as annoying as people who whine under every resident evil 4 remake video, that they want code veronica remake more. Resident evil 4 is million times better game, more important game and more popular game. These who whine about code veronica are also just small group of people who don't even care about resident evil 4 at all. It's literally same with thing with AC games. I swear Ubisoft, if you go back to this AC1-AC3 nonsense, i will stop buying your games, i will stop promoting your games to my friends and i will never play any of your games ever again. Listen to your real fans. Expand

And given that the reviews labeled 'unhelpful' by corporate shills are uniformly the ones that match my own experience with the game, I've decided to write a substantive review that those treating the game like the second coming of Christ can band together and downvote to their heart's content. Because to a discerning buyer, that seems to be a tick of approval.

In brief: if you liked Odyssey, then you'll likely like the skeleton of this game. It feeds from exactly the same trough, in typical Ubisoft fashion, and essentailly makes some small, less significant tweaks to the previous release that change the feeling of the game slightly, but unfortunately not enough to make it feel fresh. If you carry with you a sense of fatigue at the expansive and often-repetitive nature of Odyssey's content, then you might find yourself starting this game with that fatigue hanging over you as I did. To be clear - I loved Odyssey. It was the only AC game released in the last decade that didn't eventually bore me. But it was huge and tiring, there can be no skirting around that fact. So the understanding that you're not playing a fundamentally different game sets in very quickly, and so does the exhaustion that Odyssey eventually gave way to, despite how fun it was.

Those feelings are more or less identical here - Valhalla is fun, and it's a tweaked version of its predecessor, but it never, ever diverges enough to feel like much other than the exact same formula, and while I find that formula less worn-out than that of, say, the formula of the later 'old-style' AC games like Syndicate or Unity, it's still worn-out nonetheless.

Ubisoft is up to their old tricks, of course, and Valhalla feels like another step slightly too far down the same road. This is exactly why Syndicate tanked in sales and forced the company to revamp for Origins. But because we're 20-something games deep in the series, whatever minor changes Ubisoft make to their releases hold a far-more-quickly diminishing set of returns for long-time players.

So while I was, for once, excited for what I thought might be something honestly different, Valhalla has ultimately been the game to convince me that the series has reached its natural end. It simply cannot be iterated anymore. Each new release needs to a wild revamp, because there's just not enough 'new' game here for a 90 dollar release. It's one of two dozen other games that all kind of feel the same, and one of three RPG-style games that already feel like they're being spat out of the Ubisoft-open-world-Build-O-Matic 2000 pipeline.

Which, y'know, if you're not tired of the other games, might be appealing. I must admit that I like the safe and often mindless gameplay loop of the series, and Valhalla offers a beautiful new setting with some fairly engaging story and gory combat. Combat stamina has been introduced to remove the button-mashing of Odyssey, but the combat controls themselves are pretty clunky and lack the finesse needed to maintain a nice flow. You'll often find yourself getting struck simply because you hit the button one-too-many times. On lesser difficulties this is not so much a problem, but when you're one-shotted because you hit the attack button one single time too many it can be enraging. You can dodge to cancel actions, which gives the combat a welcome learning curve - you can get better in-game by improving as a player - but it isn't enough for the fighting to feel less shallow, and the aged engine struggles to meet the demands of the system they've designed. And honestly, that's a pretty good summation of the whole beast - what little they tried to change only works half as well as you'd hope, and it's very likely because the developers suffered horribly at the hands of company management during production.

It's devastating to know that you're playing a game that *feels* like it was made by overworked people. The reported crunch is worn on Valhalla's sleeve more clearly than ever in the bugs, the glitches, the slapdash animations, the lack of innovation, and the clunky mechanics. This game was forced out before Christmas and could easily have benefitted from, among other things, months of extra development time. But there's no saving a game made simply to make money by a company infamously cruel to its employees, with the tightest possible development schedule and the slimmest allowable window for innovation. It's a deep scar given context by a knowledge of how the game was produced.

So why am I here? Because you may find yourself uncertain, or willing to compromise your stated values out of curiosity, or, like me, a long-standing enjoyment of the series. But honestly I don't think this product is worth the money. It's not that different from Odyssey, and all things considered, I honestly don't even think it's 'better'

    Story & Writing:
The story, both in and out of the Animus makes sense again, with clear motives for all the characters involved. The writing is interesting, consice, and manages to create intrigue throughout the playtime without ever beoming absurd, like it did with Odyssey. That being said, some of the plot twists were... less than surprising. The dialogues felt natural, and the voice acting, especially that of male Eyvor was on point. Most importantly however, for the first time since AC Black Flag, Valhalla managed to make me feel connected to the characters in the game. Eyvor, as well as those around him, felt like real people, with real desires, fears, and ideologies.
The somewhat unorthodox structure of the story, being essentially split into small, unrelated chapters, that eventually tie up to the main plot, may be a turn-off for some, but for me, it helped keep the story on-point and unbloated.
Finally, it needs to be mentioned that Assassins and Templars are a thing again. Both organizations have finally reached their recognizable forms in the Animus timeline, thus helping Valhalla feel like an actual Assassin's Creed game.

    Gameplay:
The most striking thing about the gameplay in Valhalla, is that it's no longer a looter game. Instead of being drowned in loot with only incremental differences in stats, the loot is now way more rare, and therefore way more valuable.
Actual stealth has made a return, enabling you to feel like an Assassin again, with sneaking on rooftops, blending into crowds, and strategically avoiding guards being a big part of the gameplay.
Combat has been toned down to a degree, doing away with some of the trademarks of the "modern era AC" combat, like elemental effects on weapons and armor. While it may seem like a negative to some, as far as I'm concerned, it helped keep the game grounded and more realistic.
Sidequests have been essentially replaced by "mysteries", short (about 10 min long) quests that don't even get marked in the quest log. This was a huge improvement, as one of AC's major problems were the overly long and yet overly similar sidequests that 99% of the time amounted to "go there and kill X number of bad guys". This shorter format allows for more experimentation, and it doesn't feel like it's ever pulling you away from the main plot.

    Graphics:
Easily the best looking AC game so far. While some assets have indeed been re-used from Odyssey, it's not to an overwhelming degree.

    Performance:
Maintained above 60 FPS for most of the game, with very few noticable drops, however there were plenty of crashes. Valhalla actually crashed more times for me than Cyberpunk 2077 did, and that really says something.

    Overall:
I may be a bit biased since I'm a Vikings nerd, and medieval England is a setting that I've always adored, but Valhalla is an absolute gem in my eyes. A solid return to form gameplay-wise, while maintaining the good parts of Origins and Odyssey, combined with a great story, and even better presentation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is just my opinion. Your gameplay experience may be totally different.
    Contains spoilers!!!
I have played the game for 136 hours and have a 384 skill level.
The first 40 hours of gameplay were captivating and engrossing.
At 60 hours it became monotonous.
At 80 hours it was boring.
I didn’t waste time looting during the last two story arcs as I had already upgraded my gear to mythical.
When I had control of Basim (“I did it because of my family”) during the last Animus scene I just re-entered the Animus without interacting with any of the environment…I just wanted to end the game. We all know the “tree” has many stories to tell.
A lot of game resources could have been used to improve the core game if they omitted the immersion breaking Animus (current day) gameplay and data nodes.
Once you finish the “end game” you see a pop up stating something to the fact “you have more secrets to discover and more lands to explore.” My reply is I finished the game and regret buying the season pass. I probably won’t play any of the expansions or DLCs as it adds nothing to the end game nor do I have any incentive to replay the game.
Here are somethings I learned during my gameplay experience:
I used the raven only a dozen times. Totally useless in the game.
Most of your combat interactions will be melee so build around that.
Assassination is an afterthought in this game.
I upgraded the settlement to just below level 6…only to realize that the only buildings needed were the Hidden Ones Bureau for the Hidden Ones questlines and the cartographer. You spend very little time in your settlement anyway.
    • Stable not needed…available in most towns and cities.
    • Trader not needed…available in most towns and cities.
    • Seers hut not needed unless you want to do the side quests. You only get 10 skill points for completing both parts of the quest. You have to collect 30 “tears” for each part of the quest and you have a chance to kill a level 400 legendary animal. Entire side quests have no effect on the end game.
    • Fishing hut not needed unless you want to waste time on broken quests.
    • Hunting lodge not needed unless you want to waste time on broken quests.
    • Shipyard not needed unless you want to change the appearance of your longboat which you don’t spend that much time on. No other longboat upgrades available.
    • Tattoo shop not needed unless you want to constantly change the limited available tattoos and hair styles.
    • Barracks not needed unless you want to recruit other players Jomsvikings. Has no effect on monastery raids. Go into a monastery with Eivor, kill everyone and then use your horn to call your raiders as you need them to open up the doors and raid chests.
    • Museum not needed. Only gives you cosmetic items for your settlement.
    • Reda is worthless as you need a large amount of opals to buy his junk.
    • All other outbuildings not needed unless you want feast buffs. I only used the longhouse feast buff once as I didn’t see any real benefit of the buffs during gameplay.
Data nodes are useless. Just immersion breaking parkour puzzles that have nothing to do with the endgame. I did the first three data nodes and passed on the others.
Chasing flying books only to be rewarded with a random tattoo. I did three and passed on the rest of them.
The overabundance of “blocked” doors which have a chest with a miniscule amount of basic crafting materials and silver. Not worth the effort to solve the puzzles.
The berserker quest is useless. When you finish the quest you get to recruit the berserker and not the bear. The bear dies from old age at the end of the quest.
De-synchronized because I killed three civilians who happen to be in the middle of a quest/combat area.
The convoluted skill tree. Just a disaster. Granted you can respect at no cost, but it is a waste of time to respect from bear to raven to wolf as the scenario changes. It doesn’t make a difference near end game as you have the skill points for all three skill trees.
Yggdrasil story arc is boring and immersion breaking.
Most of the countryside is lifeless.
Would have been nice to have the ability to kill Basim by midgame and also the option to let Sigurd die in Fulke’s dungeon.
I won’t comment on the game breaking bugs as that is another topic in itself.
I have learned my lesson to not buy pre-order game bundles. I’ll just save my cash and wait awhile after a game is released to purchase it.

Sure it had some bugs and still has some bugs here and there, but overall it was working game from day 1, unlike cyberpunk 2077. I have played Valhalla over 100 hours and half of it might be just walking around and enjoying scenery, this game is really beautiful, but story is also million times better than Odyssey or Origins.

AC is completely different game series and way deeper and more meaningful than any souls games has ever been. If you don't like it, go play something else. Nobody is forcing anyone to play AC games. But don't expect them to change, just cause you don't like it. These games are not made for you. These games are made for AC series fans and they like those games, is it too difficult concept for you? It would be same, if i would come to souls game page and start complaining, that these games should be more like AC, but i'm not doing that, because i'm not low IQ loser like some of these elden ring fanboys. There can be and should be different kind of games, that have different combat style. That's normal and always has been normal. Assassin's Creed actually got good starting with Black Flag, everything before it had this nonsense Desmond modern day stuff and awful mission structure. Black Flag and Unity made stuff way better. Valhalla is decent, but lacks lots of stuff that made Unity and Black Flag great. Ironically some people think that Mirage will be like AC1, while it will clearly be more like Unity. I guess nostalgic people have forgotten how outdated combat and parkour was in these earlier games. Unity was huge leap forward in terms of graphics, parkour and combat and that's the game Mirage takes inspiration from. Sure it has similar outfits, like in AC1, but there will be obviously countless of different outfits and outfit colors just like in Unity. But basically, i would say if you are bored, Valhalla is worth playing, but there are better AC games out there and hopefully Mirage brings back golden age. Expand

I’m not even close to the end but I tried a lot with this game and I played all AC’s so far. Not only did I play them, I finished them 100% which means collecting every feather or treasure out there. Yeah I’m a huge fan of the series. I got them both digital and as console version, just to have something for my nerd shelf. So with this context given to you: I know all games in and out. I played it on pc.

Of course you have to rate this game mostly against Origins and Odyssey because they seem to be very similar on first sight. But they are not and I will tell you why I’ve got issues with Valhalla. It seems I’m not the only one I checked some reviews (Skill Up, ACG, Gamestar etc. pp.) and read some reddit posts and also comments here on meta. My problem with metacritic: for most gamer it’s either top or flop. 0 or 10. Which seems to fit this generation of people but I’m Generation X (44) and have a more balanced view with pros and cons.

Let’s start with the pink elephant in the room: the new combat system. A lot of people love it, a lot of people hate it. After playing and upgrading around with different sets and weapons (there are not many which is another problem for me) I have to say: I absolutely don’t like the combat. It’s way too slow and too clunky for my taste. I had the same issue with RDR2 (which also has the worst pacing ever). On the other side a Nioh 2 gameplay is perfect to me. And I liked the more fluid gameplay in Origins (160h with NG+) and Odyssey (403h with NG+) so much more! And that’s a big deal for me. Alongside the setting the gameplay is the most important part in every AC for me.

    PROS:
    - World Setting: as always it is absolutely georgous. I love Norway, England and the Vikings and the whole AC-series so what could go wrong?
    - Story: so far not that bad.
    - Dice game: I love it! Not as good as Gwent from Witcher 3 but it’s also very nice. Sadly you can’t get any money by playing it (at least so far I’m in the game)
    - Music: I hated the music in Odyssey but this one is great again
    - The world is huge: I love big open world games so I’m ok with that
    - Graphic settings: good job here Ubisoft
    - Side Missions: some of them are funny. And they are short which is good.

    CONS:
    - Combat System: as said above: I hate it. Even with 2x 2H weapons or other combinations (Dagger with shield, other weapon etc. pp) it feels clunky as hell. Not even near Odyssey and Origins I’m sorry. It’s way more boring. Slow. Clunky. Just not fun.
    - Slow fighting animations: the stomp f.e. takes forever and looks odd – and during that time you’re still vulnerable. Which is not a problem on normal but it’s annoying on the highest difficulty setting. Most animations are out of round. The look and feel is just bad!
    - Lack of Loot: yeah this is a big deal for me also. I know a lot of fans didn’t like the Diablo 3 loot system but I loved it. I love to play around with different sets and weapons and also the customization options which leads to:
    - Lack of Customization: there’s none. You either like your fav stats-set also visually or you’re screwed. In Odyssey you could manage your looks which I loved as RPG fan.
    - Lack of sorting items: yeah not possible you have to scroll and scroll and scroll through all tattoos….hair styles, ship skins etc. pp. it’s not good here
    - Arrows: different arrow types why? Hunter Bow’s quiver is limited and you cannot craft your own arrowas anymore – why??
    - Talent system: really Ubisoft? One of the worst “progression” systems I’ve ever seen in any videogame! You don’t know what 2.5 Headshot means – ist it percentage? Is it base damage? WTH? Same goes with almost every singe point in the tree. Also it’s all in the fog again when you reset all talent points once. Why? You cannot playn your way up. What were you thinking?! Odyssey was so much better! Hell even Syndicate was better.
    - Slow pace: one of the worst things from RDR2 they implemented here for no reason: walking like a snail while listening boring stories. Omg nothing kills my patience faster than this.
    - Draengr-Level: very hard. Really? It’s not even close to a dark souls or Nioh difficulty at any time. Yes of course when you go with power lvl 80 after a lvl 200 then it’s impossible but not when you level normally. Which means: very hard is not very hard at all.
    - Stealth-Kill-Animation: 10x slower than in any other AC so far. WHY?! Combinate this with master assassination (hardest level there) and you cannot even chain a second kill.
    - Instant-Stealth-Kill: you can switch a button in the menu I mean wtf again. I want to play a game like it’s meant to be played by the designers NOT “chose whatever you want – we don’t have any clue what WE want you to experience”.

Voice acting is well done for the most part. The voice actors for Eivor (male) and Sigurd were spot on.
The game is absolutely gorgeous. Primary character models are textured and designed well.
The addition of 'Flyting' is a mechanic I did not expect would be fun.
    The praise ends there.
Mediocre game at best not worth the price of entry. Ubisoft made it blatantly clear with Origin and Odyssey that they have little respect for their consumers with their cash-shop. Nothing has changed here. They've also delivered on continuing to show a lack of respect for your time by constantly wasting it on frivolous tasks ad tedium by marketing these events as 'Exploration' mechanics when it is nothing more than bloat. The UI HUD display for marked items is incredibly inaccurate and does not represent proper verticality. The HUD does not always display points of entry for well hidden items often requiring a significant time investment to locate marked items for even the most mundane category. Had these searches been limited to items of notable interest this would not be an issue but it is far too prevalent for simple resource caches.
In almost every way this game is a step back from it's predecessor. The combat is disconnected, clunky and slow. The addition of a stamina bar generates extra complication where no additional complexity was needed. The skill tree system prevents players from truly creating a 'build' to compliment their vision of play. Locating abilities can be random and egregious if you are playing blind, adding an additional level of unwanted or unneeded complexity.
In a franchise built around stealth mechanics, this title falls flat on it's face. Introducing the ability to 'Blend' into areas is a fan service with criminally poor execution.
The Loot system while a step in the right direction, flounders without a substantial time commitment.
Side Quests are short and sweet but also lacking context and direction in a few instances. Some are also bugged and incompletable.
The parkour mechanics are not as tight and polished as they were in Odyssey making some collectibles a rage inducing practice in futility.

This game is not a terrible game by any stretch of the imagination but it is far from good. It is clear that Ubisoft is attempting to milk player's time as much as they can in an effort to steer people towards their cash store which is clearly evident due to how much bloat is just beneath the surface of the core game. You can still play and enjoy this game without spending a penny, but the fact that time saver purchase-ables exist should be indicative of Ubisoft's endgame here.

Why you shouldn't buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla:
    - Patch 1.1.0 removed the reason why the game should have a level system at all, enemies scale to a minimum of 51 power levels below yours and bosses will if their power level would be below yours become your power level.
    - Patch 1.1.0 added an event that nobody asked for that stopped a quest from working inside your settlement, traders

    - In-game store, that alone is a huge negative. Would the Metacritic allow me to give negative points then it would be a 10-. It contains stuff like "time savers." Like paying for something to enjoy exploration but then getting an offer to skip all of that?

Game is region-locked, purchasing in CIS region only makes it available in Russian, no option to switch to be fully in English, which is my preference to experience the game as developer intended.

Wasted almost an hour of my life to investigate that + time to download the game. Refunded thanks to amazing support policy in EGS. Literally the first game out of hundreds I've purchased which have this sort of an issue.

By 2020 standards this game is really, really good. Stuff like avengers,re3remake, even doom eternal have nothing on it.

What's with all the negativity? It's one of the better AC games in long time, highly recommended!

I remember watching Assassin's Creed Valhalla first trailer earlier this year, can't believe it's here now. Epic so far.

Makes me wonder is this like one-off thing for Ubisoft or are like actually back? Because this one is really good, i don't care about god's and monsters, that's clearly side-project. But please make Far Cry 6 good! Please!

Just giving my 10/10 to this 9/10 game, just for the good cause. These dislikes have dragged this user score way too low.

Haters should give it up already, this game is great. I don't even understand what way these people are thinking who give this anything below 5, it's just awful way of living.

Seems so underrated or maybe it's just haters who make it look like it's underrated? idk, either way recommending, if you like open world games that have tons of stuff to do.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.

Sneaking is fun, fighting is fun, walking through the great outdoors is so much fun. Sightseeing too! Valhalla is free minded and could be innovative, but lacks skills to persuade its players about that. [Issue#308]
