In my opinion it's like a bad immitation of the previous games. Also, the modern day storyline is getting worse and worse with each game. It was extremely boring and frustrating even in Odyssey, spoiling the rest of the game, but Valhala took it a step further. Travelling was another issue, when desynchronized in a mission you start all over again and stealth isn't the same as it used to be. Expand

Well, as usual, I waited for a bargain buy before purchase. Such a thing also gained me the extra content, etc.

Very disappointing indeed. I long-since wondered where the 'Assassin' part of the game titles disappeared to and this is certainly the least assassin-like of all. Most notably, castle/fort battles are just a plain ol' slugfest. The title should be changed to 'Melee Creed'.

Very disappointing indeed. I long-since wondered where the 'Assassin' part of the game titles disappeared to and this is certainly the least assassin-like of all. Most notably, castle/fort battles are just a plain ol' slugfest. The title should be changed to 'Melee Creed'. The first few raids i undertook saw me lose a participant or two as I didn't have enough food-y things to heal them with. However, these became increasingly easy after I discovering that, if I went in alone, slaughtered everything moving, then called a raid, no one was lost and it was a quicker than pissing about with your NPC colleagues getting in the way all the time.

As in previous games, Ubisoft go out of their way to slow the play down by making your mount annoyingly slow in and around towns. However, this also extended quite a way from towns. Frustrating in and of itself but when the unmounted character can run fast than on a mount, why the f**k should you actually use one? Alas, no talented individual had come up with any (stable) mod that would bypass the startup garbage and the slow horse annoyance.

The world seems quite large and exploring it was far more rewarding than the actual game content itself.

Seriously disappointing was the re-introduction of those f**ked up 'chase the pages' things. Thus, I ignored all of those.

Far beyond everything was the constant crashing. Literally 5-6 times per hour for hours on end. The tedious, tedious, tedious pre-menu crap that one has to endure, including the "this game was made by people, trannies, and the religiously deluded of all descriptions" disclaimer, that cannot be skipped/bypassed made these crashed even more annoying. I used to think that UNITY had the longest startup of all the games but this crashing crapfest took that to new heights (depths)

Animus glitch twaddle which required platform jumping around to get to a data cache was also boring and I also skipped these after doing 3 or 4 of them.

Without the Odyssey ability to create several equipment loadouts, there is no incentive to change gear at all. One shoe will fit all.

Due to the crashing, river raids were certainly pointless as the raid will not count should the game crash while you are still doing one. Getting killed because, all of a sudden, you end up flying through the air across half the map, or getting stuck between your horse and a rock, or a slew of other bizarre glitchy terminations did nothing to enhance the gaming experience.

There seemed to be little or no consequence of choice for the main plot. One arm cedes leadership AND his woman quite happily to a character with no personality.

The ending made no logical sense at all: some random assassin from way back when gets mentally stacked inside some simulation and , magically, this causes his mortal form to not age at all. No sustenance required, no pissing, pooping or physical movement at all. Muscle atrophy after 1000 years of inaction would surely have affected a human body.

...and how was it that the long-lived Alexios/Cassandra character had no knowledge of any of the Assassin history at all?

All-in-all, not a thing I would recommend to anyone, and certainly NOT for 120Euro.

The open world consists of simple icon hunting - a boring huge open world with minigames scattered all over for you to tick off. Flashing icons everywhere, constantly the game tells you "press x to do y".
Valhalla has really nothing to do with the original series either anymore. What started as Assassins vs. Templars brought us to Ancient Egypt and Greece and now to the Vikings in England. Stealth kills - the main game mechanic of the original games - are meaningless. You can go in anywhere and just hack & slash your way through armies of enemies. Why call it Assassin's Creed?
By far the most annoying aspect of the game is when they break immersion and drag you into the present to play as some Layla chick. WHY? I have exactly ZERO interest in this character.

When I'm talking about game mechanics, I'm talking about the RPG looter aspect, combat mechanics, and story progression.

As a RPG looter, the whole skill tree idea that is utilized in many RPG games is embarrassing in Valhalla. Litterally google the skill tree in this game and be amazed on how bad they ruined the RPG aspect of this game. Additionally, the looting aspect is for some reason scaled back in Valhalla compaired to the previous titles. I litterally played for 20+ hours and found one piece of armor.

Combat mechanics for some reason in this title took a whole 5 steps backwards. It's clunky and has way too much going on, in addition; it's just so bad compared to the other games. There's barely any stealth aspects in the game.. seriously. You're forced to find "scrolls" all over the world to unlock special skills that you use in combat, where in Odyssey; you would unlock them by progressively leveling up.

As of the story progression, it''s repetitive and boring. You go spend hours on hours sailing around and riding on your horse looking for places to Raid with your vikings to build your village. Yes, it's cool but it's not cool to do over and over again and then you're forced to do so to move forward in the story. There's no stealth involved when it comes to doing the raids either.. which defeats the whole Assassin Creed aspect.

The only thing that made the game worth playing was the world in which you play in. It's a pretty, detailed world; I like how the snow would leave tracks when you treked through it. It was definitely nowehre near Red Dead Remdemption 2 however. I have no idea what the developers where thinking with this game this time around. Everything they did in Origins and Odyssey progressive got better with each title and then we come to Valhalla and they litterally ruined it. I would definitely pass up on this game and I'm quite let down with this title that I uninstalled halfway through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has all the potential of being a good game but it is seriously let down by some high caliber problems.
1- It simply isn't as good as its predecessor. Odyssey was better in most regards including fighting, ship conflict, style, scaling, characters, story etc.
2- They have kept that absolute SJW future crap where you totally lose immersion in the actual game by suddenly leaping forward to some irritating American woman wandering about trying to find alien artifacts. I get AC world has this metanarrative woven throughout but I have to be honest, it's a crap narrative and very poorly executed crap at that.
3- The controls are VERY clunky and unresponsive. In situations where timing is critical, the game totally fails you. I haven't ever become as irritated by a computer game as I have with AC Valhalla... It's worse that Odysseys issues.
4- The world is filled with treasure but apparently most of them are stupidly hard to get to and require really fiddly little arrow shots or wandering about for 10 minutes until you find a cellar entrance by accident. This is not puzzle solving team, it's just boring crap.
5- Eivor, the main character, is a nobody who is apparently somebody. He isn't a king, he doesn't have renown, he isn't even a clan chief, he is JUST a warrior. Maybe he is a good one but the character of somebody rolling with the big dogs of the day is nonsense. He is a nobody, he would have not been important enough to become close confidante of the Lothbrocks or kings etc.
6- In many instances, the Norse and Danes are considered by the game as the defacto good guys. Although I appreciate that Eivor needs to be a good guy in his world, the viking raids and the later Norse/Dane settlers were NOT in anyway good guys. The Saxons, Angles, Celts etc may also have had their dark sides and let's be honest, life in the dark ages was VERY brutal and hard but you cannot in any way write into existence that the fyrd would side with the invaders or that the local people of war torn Mercia would regard the invaders benevolently.
7- You have once again, like all the post modern age interpretations of faith, shat on Christianity and made paganism that included things like human sacrifice of slaves, legitimised rape and vile actions against Christians because they dared believe something else is just another attack on a Christianity that, regardless of whether you have any faith of any kind now, actually acted as an extremely peaceful and right giving faith. They ensured things like a universal system of laws which made murder wrong and taking a woman against her will illegal. Was it spotless, no of course not but civilisation has somewhat proven that it was a damn site better than the available other options.
8- The game crashes, regularly. In itself it isn't a huge deal but far out, for a very expensive full price and 'completed' game, it is very trashy.
9- Silver is useful only for sideline noise stuff like buying a new decoration for your extremely undersized boat. This is dumb. For a leader, jarl, king, lord etc, money was the sinews of war. Vikings particularly ONLY stayed with the man they were sworn to if their leader was a gold giver. Silver and gold should be WAY more critical to success in this game, instead you have put in things like chests full of iron ore and leather (what?) and ingots of metal to be the more important currency. Odyssey did this way better.
10- Ubisoft have damaged their recent games by being greedy. Making people BUY the game and then trying to sell currency packs or decoration packs etc is absurd. You are becoming dangerously close the EA in your profits first policy. This will be the last Ubisoft game I buy in a very long while, possibly ever.
11- It is thin. Odyssey felt, rich, vibrant, energised... fun. Valhalla is thin and very easy to put down and stop playing. I doubt I will be able to drag myself across the finish line, what a let down after Odyssey.
12- As a final remark, your horse riding is crap.

    * Love the location with the northern lights in Norway
    * The "World Events" / side quests are well-done
    * Social stealth returns in a limited manner
    * Better pacing when swimming in terms of the animations
    * Much better job on romance animations in this game
    * I liked the roaming music while in Ravensthorpe (basecamp in England), definitely felt like the Viking era for sure
    * I enjoyed the Flyting / Charisma options in conversation, that was a good idea
    * The Assassin bureaus were a nice touch, although woefully underutilized
    * Horses can now swim once upgraded
    * **SPOILER** - Toward the end of the game it looks like they are finally phasing Layla Hassan out of the series, at least to a degree which is fantastic. She is easily the most insufferable character in the entire franchise

    Cons:

    * Combat is downgraded from Odyssey - much more sloppy
    * Horse movement mechanics are downgraded from Odyssey in terms of just movement on terrain
    * Layla "The Bestest Evar" Hassan is still around - easily the most insufferable character I've ever seen in any game I've played. They get rid of Desmond, an actual good character and replace him with this awful Mary Sue.
    * Present day - while it's great to see Rebecca & Shaun return, they don't look even remotely like they have in past games (their rendering is AWFUL), but they at least have the same voice actors - again, it's too bad Layla is in the game and not Desmond - the present day story was so much more enjoyable with him as the protagonist - I hope Layla is killed off at some point as she is just a terrible character. I'd rather see just Shaun & Rebecca with William Miles involved since Desmond is gone. Don't need any feminist wet dream characters shoe-horned into the story for woke talking points
    * No mGPU support
    * Movement system in the game feels very clunky with delayed input (similar to AC Unity)
    * Game is basically Ubisoft's latest copy of Witcher 3 - they've done three in a row now
    * Tying into the above bullet, there is borderline zero stealth / assassination tactics in the game. Where the earlier games the player had to utilize some stealth mechanics to get near a target and kill them without being detected, as well as try to get out of the location undetected, these latest games are just open world combat games, the opposte of what AC games are supposed to be
    * Multiple forms of DRM to ensure you never really own the game, you're just renting it for as long as Denuvo and Ubisoft servers are online. Glad I didn't buy it
    * Like the last two games, the game is WAY too long. About 100 hours too long. In typical Ubisoft fashion, the game has a million side quests that add very little to the game shoe-horned in. Just concentrate on the main quests, Ubi. The problem with the game is if you don't do the side missions, your character will be significantly under-leveled making certain fights incredibly difficult later in the game. These games should be 30-60 hours and focus more on the story and less on a million side quests
    * RPG mechanics - they do not belong in an Assassin's Creed game
    * More Ubisoft over-the-top wokeness being injected into the narrative with way too much homosexuality references during quests and dialogue in areas particularly during a time period where it was not prevalent and would never have been tolerated. Ubisoft has gone so downhill - this is why I don't buy Ubisoft games anymore and play them "somewhere else"
    * Regarding the RPG mechanics - poor leveling placement of enemies that are far above the player's level forcing them to leave and come back later which kills immersion.
    * The "Social Stealth" system in the game is mostly worthless - I really miss the blending of old from AC2 / AC3 that made it feel like you could actually sneak around a bit. Just an awful blending / stealth system. These last 3 games have not been Assassin's Creed games
    * Very unstable game - frequent crashes to desktop
    * **SPOILER** - Regarding the end of the game...not a fan of the way they are handling Sages in the story related to reincarnations of people from the ISU time period. It's making things incredibly convoluted and honestly quite stupid
    * This is, quite frankly, my least favorite of the entire series. It's the least "Assassin's Creed" game of all of the games. Eivor is just some bloke running around doing things that happen to coincide with the Assassins' objectives, sort of like Edward Kenway in AC4, but without a good payoff at the end, and and basically no involvement of the Assassins.

    Game Length: ~130 hrs.

    Overall Rating: 2/10.

There are rarely moments where I regret buying a game I wanted.
2 cases : First being Forza Horizon 4, now this.
When it came out, I was pretty excited, expecting a back to the roots game where a viking goes to become an assassin and joins the brotherhood, like Black Flag did it with the pirate theme...and at the end, pure disappointment. First of all, at launch, it was a buggy mess.

First of all, at launch, it was a buggy mess. Plenty of times, I encountered game breaking bugs like not being able to open chests at raids because my stupid followers won`t help, instead just run around like morons.
Then, there is the disappearance of the E button to talk to important characters when you have to.
Repetitive moves are also something that is an eye sore.
The grind to get all the skills is beyond boring.
But out of all the things that bore the fck out of me, must be the annoying, everlasting parade of pledges.
Those things drag out across 70h of gameplay, to the point where I beg the game to stop.
Its not even doing different things at each pledge...No, its all the same s*it !
Travel across the map with no fast travel, speak to someone, do a task to kill someone, talk to them, start a battle and do it all over again for over 10 times... Not to mention, the story arc of each location is basically the same, like helping one character to become the leader... Why ?
The map is just terrible. The only location I did like was visiting London. And that is pretty much it.
Now. Assassin`s Creed should be AC, not Viking Creed. Going back to Black Flag.
There you play a pirate, who finds a new purpose in life and eventually joins the brotherhood.
In Valhalla, I truly hoped to see the moment where Eivor becomes an assassin and his story arc goes in that direction, like a lot of other characters in the series do : Ezio, Arno, Connor...
Seeing him get the hidden blade at the beginning for no reason than just "Here it is" was the icing on the bulls*it.
After beating Basim, is student Haytham does not say a freaking thing post ending ! Not a single word !
Tracking down every order member felt like a chore that I have not completed but wanted to since that was the only AC element in the entire game !
Also, one of my issues that made me shake my head in disbelief is the usage of mythology in this game.
Asgard, the DLC where you play as Odin... I mean, what the f*ck Ubisoft ??? IF you want to make a game about fantasy s*it, make a new IP, not ruin Assassin`s Creed !

Everything feels plastic, dull and artificial in such a way that there is no immersion whatsoever. Voice acting is bad, lips sync is at Playstation 2 level, the sounds that they have recorded for this game are at a low bitrate, repetitive and have no depth. There is no spatial sound for a 2020-2021 game, you just can't figure out from which side the sounds are coming. Eivor voice covers every other sound in the stage and it's louder then everyone else's. These are not bugs to be fixed, it's just the way the game's sound engine has been created, more like the ones in games from 20 years ago.
I have nothing to complain about graphics, they are ok, there is also a fake HDR and overall the performance is similar to Odiseey.
The gameplay however is plain and dull, repetitive, doing the same raids over and over to gather resources which is so boring. Ubisoft managed to peak at Odiseey and I thought that Valhalla can at least be at that level, but no, it's a much worse game in every way. Too bad I payed for it. Ubisoft also decided it was a good idea to ad microtransactions to the game after it's launch. ALso changing the level scaling a few months after launch at the same moment aas they launched an XP boost seems a little too convenient.

Stealth is completely useless in this game. Several ressources require you to launch full-blown raids on enemy camps therefore completely anihilating the assassin's way.

While playing Valhalla I was wondering about the same thing while I was playing any of the previous parts - how can you release 12 games, remaster 5 of them, with core gameplay as a parkour-like terrain traversing, all while being an AAA game developer, and fail at it every single time. Also, if I remember correctly, horse riding was in all previous series and it's still the worst horseWhile playing Valhalla I was wondering about the same thing while I was playing any of the previous parts - how can you release 12 games, remaster 5 of them, with core gameplay as a parkour-like terrain traversing, all while being an AAA game developer, and fail at it every single time. Gameplay-wise - comparing to Oddysey (since this is basically the same game - Ubisoft is a master of game mechanics recycling) it has all annoying things but has been stripped of fun elements. Character is a block of wood - running like in a dream - fully engaged pressing forward, but moving like in a jar of honey where your enemy can slowly and gently, but at a similar speed, move backward while aiming at you with a bow. Exploration is always the same - run/ride for a minute or two, and do one of few things - throw a jar of oil, shoot door barricade from the window behind or go through the opening in the top of the building. Oh, don't forget to enter a well to collect the key. In Oddysey world was at least interesting - here we have two ruins of colosseums, two models of churches, and other generic ruins. All repetitive and boring. It is also no longer an RPG. If you have preferred alignment you basically stay with the same gear from the beginning to the end since there are so few weapons and armors. And it also doesn't matter which one you choose, they all have similar stats. This game is now a kind of barbie doll house - you complete tasks and gather resources to buy new hair, or decorate your village and boat. Nothing else. Fighting can be brute-forced, assassinations are useless, stealth is kept only for sake of naming the game "Assasin's Creed". The new thing - raids are fun but only for the first three times - later they are extremely repetitive.
The story is unfinished (like in every other game nowadays) - after the "main character arc", both assassin creed and england conquer arcs are closed as fast as possible, with a lot of plot holes. It really feels like the team didn't had time to think about a proper ending.

The only advantages of this game are the atmosphere and the story, the game is full of errors, sometimes making it impossible to complete individual threads. Has to be a 2!

    1. After AC Odyssey and Origins, this game is WAY TOO EASY! 2. Horribly buggy... with latest patch March 2021 plagued with crashes on all platforms. Last game I buy from UbiSoft! Ryzen 7 3700X 32GB ram Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB Steady 90-100fps in Very High 3440x1440. Game completed, england conquered... yet, I get 5 crashes an hour since the 'Ostara update'.

I loaded the game 4 times one morning, with it crashing seconds after moving from the load spot...Deleted cache folder (local), no idea what causes it, but the forums are raging with similar problems so I blame Ubisoft!

Pi$$ Poor quality control on Ubisoft as usual...

    BEAUTIFUL GAME! Unacceptable QA!

I can't understand this high score! It's not an RPG and not an action game. I think this is the worst skill "tree" what I have ever seen, i'ts horrible. The fight system is poor like a wood, and you can't craft. It's just a large open worls walking and farming simulator, with some logical jobs, nothing else. One of the worst AC in the series.

I don´t know why lots of people hype this game. There are just a few things i like about it:

    1. Theres an ability that allows u to assassinate your opponent with a guaranteed one hit if u manage to time it perfectly 2. The ending in the modern day is really interesting, although theres almost no modern day stuff in Valhalla. Now lets start with all that bad stuff... 1. There is

    1. Theres an ability that allows u to assassinate your opponent with a guaranteed one hit if u manage to time it perfectly
    2. The ending in the modern day is really interesting, although theres almost no modern day stuff in Valhalla.

Now lets start with all that bad stuff...

    1. There is no linear story. You just have to complete every saga (Theres a saga for every area, so way too many) and it feels like you do side-mission like stuff. There are just a few missions where i didnt have the urge to just skip everything. It makes it even worse that you need about 70 hrs to complete every mission wich is doing the same stuff over and over again - worse than odyssey. But the worst thing is, that from the 70 hours playing the campaign you have to ride your horse 20 hrs because lots of missions take you to another location for each step.
    2. Its a game about vikings, not assassins. Origins was about the beginning of the brotherhood, odyssey about the isu. Valhalla was basically just a viking game that could have existed as a non assassins creed game if u would take away a few missions.
    3. BUGS. I dont want to talk about small bugs like people teleporting or getting thrown a mile into the air. I talk about not being able to end the Story because the last mission is bugged and there is no way to restart it. After 100 hrs of playing the game im unable to even finish it, even after years!#
    4. Gameplay. Again, its not Assassins Creed. Yeah, Black Flag had lots of not Assassins Creed like stuff and Edward Kenway was more like a Pirate than an Assassin but at least it had good stealth mechanics. Assassins WERE NOT warriors. The stealth mechanics where so bad i just rushed into the enemies to kill everyone that is in there.

It´s just so sad. I was not happy with Odyssey and thought it could only get better if they would get back to the core of assassins creed but this game is even less an Assassins Creed than Odyssey was. If u just want to play the game because youre a fan and at least want to know if there is something important that affects future AC Games: Don´t do it, please! Just see what happens in the present day on YouTube and you know basically everything you have to know. This game is the worst thing Ubisoft could do.

I was in love with the game at first: Somewhere mid-adventure the repeat mechanics became noticeably grindy and seeing the experience boosts sold in game made me wonder, if they created a problem to sell me the solution later. Another thing I started to notice was the many "moral teachings" in the games narrative. The story makes much effort to justify the assassins' victims always deserving some 2020 poetic justice. So, to sum it up: The predatory monetization and tribal messaging turn a otherwise beautiful, imperfect world into a soulless ikea. Expand

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.

Sneaking is fun, fighting is fun, walking through the great outdoors is so much fun. Sightseeing too! Valhalla is free minded and could be innovative, but lacks skills to persuade its players about that. [Issue#308]
