The world is amazing, atmosperic and huge, but most missions are repetitive imo. The introduction of exploration mode is nice, though.

A great game, with beautiful graphics and physics too. It's downside is the extremely huge map, it's an assasin's creed game, yet it lacks stealth effectiveness (no stealth kills whenever you want, like past AC games except for Origins) and too many side quests. Plus, no hidden blade.

300+ hours of play, my verdict is 5/10. Here's why:

Setting. Greek mythology, the Peloponnesian War, Ancient Greece. Compared to other games (Valhalla, Origins), this is the most interesting and atmospheric one. The setting is very well chosen, just like your main character.

Plot. The main quest is interesting, but it is far from a masterpiece. 99% of side-quests are to bring, collect or kill. Ubisoft went Ubisoft too far. When you play the game, you notice how lazy the developers were about the plot.
The story fits very badly with the fact that you are a mercenary and a demigod. You are a demigod who is going to collect some flowers or animal skins just because a random unfamiliar grandmother in town asked for it. Great.
DLC "The fate of Atlantis" is mediocre, but the landscapes are very beautiful.
DLC "Legacy of the first blade" is criticised due to the forced romance, but it's not only about that. It had the potential when the player was told that he was mercilessly killing everyone, but that's about it. All the rest is, again, collect, bring, kill.
However, there were a few interesting side quests: Olympic Games, mythical creatures, and others.

Perhaps the only major positive aspect of the game — Combat. Oh Lord, there has been a lot of controversy about the changes from the classic games. For the old-AC-players, accept the changes, ignore the Assassins Creed name if you want to enjoy the game. The battles are very interesting. Be it simple soldiers or mythical gods. The rejection of realism in a series of games is justified in battles. Choose your style or combine several: Warrior, Assassin, Hunter = Direct Attack, Stealth, Archery. All this, together with magical abilities, makes the game interesting.

Character animations: worst thing in the game. Most of the dialogues are accompanied by the same gestures and emotions. I understand that this is costly with so many dialogues, but still, it is repeated in 90% of cases, and it is noticeable. And I am not mentioning the same faces of the characters. There are literally five or six of them, not counting ≈6 unique faces, including main character. MOST of the plot characters are so similar that it gets funny. Considering that I don't complain about this in other games like Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3, this is so terrible for a game of this level.

Dialogue options. Except a few times, they do not affect the plot AT ALL. There is a sense in them only if you want to kill or leave alive secondary useless characters or have an affair with someone.
Did I mention the forced romance?

    Additional good moments:
    Soundtrack 10/10.
The graphics are great. I have already said that the game is beautiful. In the DLC about Atlantis, the game is simply mesmerising.
While the dialogue is the most frustrating part, some of it is well done. Relevant humour and drama. It is a pity that there were very few such moments.

Results: Quite frankly, the game keeps your interest only in getting you to farm some cool gear and improve magic skills. Not worth the money.

I felt that Black Flag was like a last one that actually builds any further story. After Black flag almost none of the further Assasins were changing the game mechanics - all the time the same(small changes), all the time from the start. Moreover the way the story is told in Assasins is a bit clamsy. Repeatable story, stiff dialogs, so I gave up with the series.

Than I have heared that "latest"(Origins, Odyssey) Assasins have changed the gameplay mechanics, so I decided to give it a try. I haven't finished the game yet, but I made like 25 hours in the Odyssey and I can say some words about it.
    Pros:
    - We have skills both for the close-combat weapons(sword, etc.) and a range weapon(bow).
    - We have a big, beautiful world with islands
    - The world is divided into zones ment for specific lvls
    - We have "ships module" from previous games, adjusted to the timeframe. (bows, instead cannons, etc)
    - We have a visual branch of people to kill, and when you kill them, you get tokens for upgrades, it's a nice mechanics.
    - You don't get desynchronized when you kill NPCs, instead your crime meter rises and you're being hunted while still having a chance to survive(and kill the hunters for rewards).
    - RPG mechanics is a breath of fresh air in this game, you have lvls, upgradeable skills, equipable items
    - The combat is quite good, avoids, blocks.
    - We have army vs army mode, where you can support one of the side and for the win you get items

    Cons:
    - The story - as it is another assisn... I cannot unite with my character, I just don't feel it, the character is not a part of something big and every next assasin game is made for no reason, how many times can we go thorugh the game with the same background? If the game wasn't assasin, this could be all different.
    - The lvl scalling - This part pains me the same as the story one - the world lvl is scaled up to your lvl, the zone you're in cannot be lower than you -4 lvls, so basically all you do in the game, all the upgrades you make, you feel all the time like you don't progress at all, as you deal the same dmg oveer and over, the skills dmg doesn't really change much too.
    - Even though we have ships, it doesn't feel that good like in Black Flag. You just sail to another island, because there is a quest... and I don't feel like fighting other ships, because even when you get resources for upgrades, still there is lvl scalling or stronger enemies and you do the same dmg all over again.
    - Even though we have a big world, the world is empty, I mean it's filled with a lot of boring repeating quests like: go-and-kill, open chest, find a piece of paper, clear a cave, that don't bring anything to the story and the bonuses(exp) you get, etc. is getting "lost" due to lvl scalling.
    - The "synchronizing towers", srsly? again? Just to unlock fast-travel? And a flying eagle effect for 10 seconds?
    - You get slots for skills over time. You get 4 per-weapon in the beginning, than you get more. Some may like it, but I didn't feel good with being limited to 4 skills, when I had bought 12, because in that part of the game, I could spare only 1point per skill.
    - Opening menus animations are annoying for me, even though the UI looks nice and intuitive, they take too long (3secs to open),
    - The map tab and quests tab should be somehow combined together, because switching between it, checking where the quest is, going back is just not handy.
    - "Heart" dialogs, we can have sex, but whatever, when you don't feel the character you play.
    - Items lvls - each item has its lvl, which can be increased to the lvl of your character, no matter what rarity type is the weapon, so if you are stubborn you can loot one piece of crap and upgrade it through the whole game - the dmg doesn't count anyway, due to scalling.
    - Even though the combat system is quite good, the opponents moves are repeatable, the enemies are repeatable, which just don't fit to such big world.

To summarize, the game is playable. It is even exiting for the first 20 hours, than you get border or repeating things and a lack of progressing. Dear Ubisoft if you read it, please close the series, call your game something else, change the background, maybe at least I won't be so negative about starting another piece of tapeworm and having the stiff story I can't relate to, because I'll have another game in the series with completly different characters. (Unlike AC II) Also please decrease the world size, or at least please fill it with more valuable unqiue content, like quests with unique stories - you can take an example from The Witcher 3.

It's a 6 for me. Big, pretty, open world with very repetitive side stuff that's mandatory so you don't get level gated from the main story. Interesting story with some lame dialogue. I've seen some reviewers stating this game is a rival to The Witcher 3 which just proves they never played it. The excess of microtransactions in a single player game also get the score down for me.

They need to rethink some of the approaches to game making. Specifically, in the case of this game and other games like this one, I would like to make a couple of points. This game does not quite work for the following reasons: First, there's a bit too much grind, and you cannot escape the ugly feeling of doing too much of the same. Some grind in a game is quite ok, but too much can ruin the game. Second, this is poor implementation of RPG+Open World combination. The game forces you to follow the linear path of the story in an Open World game?!!? How so? Well, if you go astray from the main story line and try to explore the game world away from the main story you cannot, because literally every creature you encounter is too powerful for you. You just end up running away from everyone and everything, in stead of exploring or doing quests. A minute ago, in the main story, I defeated powerful warriors and generals, and the next minute I run from ordinary wolves, boars, and peasants, only because I am in the area I'm not supposed to be in yet, and everyone is couple of levels or more above me. The game doesn't even show you the level of creatures with too high a level. There's only a red skull indicator telling you not to even bother fighting. That's ridiculous, and it defeats the whole Open World concept. RPG could work in the Open World concept, but a few tweaks are necessary. Ordinary creatures and characters everywhere should be less powerful than the game protagonist from the beginning. Only major bosses through the story line should be allowed to be significantly more powerful, and I have to level up or find better gear to be able to defeat them. There could be other tough characters, but I should be able to defeat them right from the beginning, albeit with more difficulty. Next, I don't care how tough an opponent is, three direct hits with a sword or spear should end the fight. If you want to create grind and make certain fights last longer, make blocking or dodging more frequent than hits, depending on the level of opponent of course. I feel silly banging on an opponent for 3 or 4 minutes, with every swipe a direct hit, and my enemy refuses to die because he's level 25, and I am level 22. Next, if you want to make certain areas more difficult than other you can populate it with more enemies, who are more vigilant, and with a few characters who are more powerful than average, but I should still be able to defeat them. Third, make quests more versatile, with variety of interesting tasks. This requires imagination and diligence. Game developers must not be complacent and just keep pumping out the same stuff all the time. They have to get better all the time. Fourth, and this is closely related to the previous point, if you're making a true RPG game that includes dialogues with choices, then you have to make dialogue interesting, engaging, and meaningful. This is a very difficult thing to do, and few RPGs ever have actually succeeded in this. Dialogues are usually tedious, or even dumb, and a waste of time. But games should progress towards true AI. I can't wait for the day when we'll see games writing themselves as you play them, depending on the way you play them, where no one knows what comes next, and how they might end. We're a long way from that, I know, but it could be better than this. Dialogues and choices seem to be of no consequence at all, except for a few key choices, and the level of freedom is actually the same as in the games from 10 or 15 years ago. Expand

    4. Life at sea and naval combat is as enjoyable as ever, but a little simplistic compared to Black Flag.
    5. Massive amount of content including new additions such as epic battles and randomly generated missions.
    6. Duelling mercenaries, heroes and other special characters is a joy.
    7. The gameworld seems to intelligently level up along with the player character. which means the player never really gets too overpoweredm. You can still find weak / underleveled enemies, but never more than two levels below you.

    Cons -
    1. Performance is very disappointing, especially for game that does not really have that much of graphical fidelity. Edit : I can see a few bots here claiming they can run @60FPS on "ultra" in a potato PC. Know that they are flat out lying (notice none of them are bothered to post screens from the in-game benchark, as that would expose their lies). You can check hundreds of benchmarks from gaming media or gamers on youtube.
    2. Evidently, this is the main substance of the review :). The grind is real, and a deal breaker. Rewards are too meagre, and resource costs are too high. It is completely unbalanced. You will never have enough resources to upgrade your legendary equipment up to your level, or engravings or your ship, unless you waste dozens of hours scouring the land for those '+2 iron' ores and '+3 soft leather' deers. Normally this could be addressed easily by adding an in-game slider that multiplies the resources earned or reduces the costs so that players can adjust the level of grind to their liking. But nope. Why do that, when you can charge real money for in-game resources? It is a bloody shame. It turns a 9 to a 5. I cannot encourage this attitude from developers. So, I am forced to leave a negative review for a game that I am otherwise enjoying.

If you can overlook that last point by having nothing else to do or paying real money for resources, buy this. It is a great game otherwise.

60% ("Travelling") Running or riding on your spastic horse trying to find senseless amounts of collectibles
    20% clearing camps/forts
    10% Dialogue / cutscenes
    5% Dying to random stuff

    - different ways to create your "own" story
    - you can have some happy hours with characters

    Negative :

    - Will get repetitive very shortly (clear forts, caves or camps / kill alpha animals / find artifacts / kill person x, destroy y or collect z)
    - Levelcapped character / always stronger enemies (some levels too low, you literally deal no damage - regardless of your gear progression you mostly cannot oneshot stealth kill any high level enemy)
    - Way too much collectibles & annoying "puzzles" (graves / caves)
    - no indicator about how much is left to do until you finish one region
    - Way too less fast travel points.
    - unfinished Engine (still as bad as in origins)
    - fck the ship travelling, ship fighthing & ships in general
    - insane reactions of enemy AI, spotting through walls / hear through floors / see you even if you are behind them
    - you have to unlock with the ingame shop that some things are shown on the map (legendary chests, etc..)

It's worth a good 30 bucks but that's about it. I just bought it because i don't have time to wait atleast 3 months to get this cracked.

Expand

Great world, nice story, good graphic, nice rpg elements.
But not a "Assassin's Creed" game. The control for keyboard is bad and the quests are unbalanced and lame.

Посредственная гриндилка созданная для фанатичных любителей Греции, и тех кому совсем некуда деть свободное время.

Better than Origins that came with a very linear constructed story, tied to the game progression mechanics.

Still totally bloated though with bad, boring content to turn a 25 hour game into a 140 hour game in order to give the player more time to pay for microtransactions. It’s an exhausting experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before i get started with reviewing this game i would like to say that i am a rpg-fan and also i also would consider myself a freak in history.
This was the main reason why i bought the game (i did not pre-order) a few days after it released

    Story:
The story starts fresh and at the start does a great job of setting things up (there are certain things you have to discover while playing).

The problem is after the good prolog and the first steps in the mainstory, it goes back to "kill all those people from this list" and "Make some things to find out where these people are to kill them"
There are some good twist in the game (although some are predictable).

The setpieces (e.g olympic games, fight for power in Athen etc.) would be there but they did not use their potential.

    Gameplay:
First i want to talk about the gameplay or the changes to the last AC. And i have to say there is not that big of a change to Origins, when it comes to land-battles and land-combat.
Sea-combat made a comeback but in a much more simplistic form that in AC IV

Overall the gameplay is ok even it will start to repeat itself after some hours.

    RPG:
The RPG-element of the game is building your character. This mean you can pick Skills out of a skilltree and equipt diffrent weapons and armor
The whoie thing splits into 3 styles of playing: You can play as Hunter (which focuses on long-range), as a warrior (short-range combat [NOT STEALTH]) and Assassin (Stealth and stealthkilling)
You have the free choice how you build yourself and even mixed characters are possible

The system has a wide range of possible mixes and builds. Although it has to be said that there are certain builds and skills that are way to powerful (as a warrior with legendary gear you are immortal).

    World:

Again they made a open world which is f-ing huge. Each map-piece has a different style and locks amazing.
All in all the game looks amazing. There are some beautiful snapshots in this game

Things to do beside the story:
There are tons of things to do beside the story: Sidequests are everywhere. You can participate in the war, collect legendary gear, kill cultmembers etc.

The problem here is (and that is why i give this game only a "ok-ish" grade) is that not much of that is worth a while. In fact after 50% of the game i started to rush through it because i outleveled everything and everything felt like i had done it at least once before.
The map is overpacked with things to do and it is tiring after some hours

    Conclusion:

All in all it is not a bad game. But the story or lack of a really good story and the repetition of content stops it for being a great game.
If they would have taken away 20 - 30 hours of content outside of the story and put the effort in the story it would be a very pleasant experience

I love the assassin Creed series of games, the game not only increases the size of the world, but also the prophobot of this world, but this world is filled with monotonous quests that are not remembered. If you want to dive into the atmosphere of ancient Greece, this game is for you, in this game you can kill a lot of time .

The latest addition to the Assassin's Creed franchise is truly a wonder and a fresh take on a stale idea. The excellent execution, gameplay and story is only overshadowed by greedy micro transactions, paid XP and awful optimization.

An excellent and beautiful game from ancient Greece. Maybe it’s very different from the first game, however this evolution benefits the brand. [Issue#290]

While AC: Origins was packed with interesting stories, Odyssey is a generic ’Ubisoft sandbox’ in the worst sense, with hundreds of the same-looking places, dozens of ”kill-fetch” quests and almost zero motivation to grind further.
