I do have to deduct a point though due to some graphic bugs and due to the control interface (since AC Revelations) which I find unintuitive. All in all an absorbing title with some amazing graphics. Great game, nice map and gameplay, especially the naval combat. You get most upgrades too fast though, and there could have been more, more diverse upgrades.

Well I'm a long time fan of AC, but have been rather critical of some of the historical settings, which we have been presented.
Where AC would have gotten a 7 this setting and all the new features has blown me out of the water.

Best pirate game ever love sailing (instead of that irritating horse and discovering loads of secrets.

There were plenty moments where i found myself grunting in frustrating as how the controls felt as if they we stacking against each other, let alone how often your character is clinging on to anything whilst running around aimlessly.

When it comes to naval battle's it really does show this game off. I did enjoy how well the combat mechanics worked, very fluid and smooth, and very easy to understand. However I would have liked if they would have implemented a free motion camera to view ship distance from shores in case you're a clumsy driver like my self.

Other than that, this game is a definite MUST have if you are into plunder and pillaging!

Assassin's Creed IV is an outstanding game and for me the best in the AC series. Ubisoft did almost everything right this time.

    Graphics and Sound
The anvil engine has turned out absolutely amazing. Great lighting, weather effects, water and more. The caribbean locations look very real and the game offers an almost completely open world with very few loading times and transitions. I was surprised how well the game runs on my hardware, because the graphics card (Radeon 6850HD) isn't very good compared to newer cards, yet it did reasonably well throughout most of the game with medium to high settings, although the great looking weather effects really put it on the edge.
The music is a little similar to that in the Pirates of the Caribbean and fits the game really well and then there are the shanties that your crew sings while you sail, once you've collected the notes for the songs. Things like that really show how much work was put into this game.

    Interface
You know how every AC game had some annoying flaws with the controls, menus or gameplay itself? Ubisoft finally took the time to adress these flaws and not only on consoles, but for the PC version, too. The menus and controls are so much better. Everything can be easily controlled with mouse or keyboard and the keyboard shortcuts make a lot more sense than they did in the previous games. All the content is easily accessible through the menus, which is quite a feat considering how much content there is. To put it in other words: Finally in an AC game, the interface doesn't get in the way of gameplay.

    Gameplay
The amount of content in this game is simply incredible. Playing through the game took me almost 80 hours and I don't even have all the achievements. There is so much to do that you might almost be a bit overwhelmed at the start: Pirating, hunting, fishing, crafting and upgrading, treasure hunting, exploring, mini missions, main missions, diving and there's even a great mini game where you manage a fleet of captured ships to gain more gold. The fleet management alone can take hours and it's definitely the best mini game Ubisoft have come up with so far. You can control the fleet management and the world map from outside the game with a phone or tablet PC, for example to set waypoints without interrupting the game flow or accessing your fleet when you're not playing the game. The ships in your fleet sail in real time, so the next time you log into the game, you can reap the rewards of your illegal pirate trading business. The whole feature is optional though, so you can completely avoid it if for some reason you don't like it.
The story is good and also a little educational, because many of the events and especially characters in the game closely resemble their real historic examples, at least as far as we known about them. In any case, it's a nice mix of fiction and history and experiencing the characters turning into pirates is really interesting and well done. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it at that.
And then of course, there's the story outside the animus, which doesn't continue too far, but is interesting nonetheless and there is a lot of information about Abstergo and the AC series to find by hacking computers, if you want to do it. The game doesn't force you to. Hacking the computers comes with new minigames that are well thought out and can be quite challening, but never too difficult.
Black Flag feels almost like an RPG, because of how open the world is. You are not restricted by missions and can do anything at (almost) any time. The world is huge, featuring the caribbean from the Bahamas to the western coast of the Dominican Republic, even though on a smaller scale of course. I don't know how many islands there are, but I would guess about a hundred. The only other single player game with a similarly huge world that I know of is Skyrim.
During all these hours of gameplay, I didn't find a single bug, which further proves the insane quality and polish of the game.

However, I will again deduct 1 point because of Uplay. I don't think I have to go into details as to why Uplay is crap.

There is so much content on the map.Finding buried treasure and collecting songs for your crew are some things to do. Hunting from AC3 has been kept in the game, you can use the animals for crafting or sell them. But hunting gets really repetitive after a while. While most of the game isn't ground-breaking, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It looks like they took the path of refining their game formula, rather than re-defining it. Where the game really shines is the naval combat. I've been looking for that kind of thing since I played Bethesda's somewhat lacking Pirates of the Caribbean. Taking on the legendary ships was quite the experience. The slow part of the game is, of course, everything outside the Animus. Wish they'd rein that in a bit. I'm a perfectionist, and tracking down all the optional content was a bit much (especially the deep-sea diving segments). But overall, this game is fantastic, and gorgeous on PC.

    Cons
-Really bad storyline when you get out of the Animus
    -Laggy at times

Well, as you know, Assassin’s Creed 3 was really bad, the fact that they Killed Desmond really brought it’s popularity down. But then Ubisoft made something to cover up for that. Assassin’s Creed IV, filled with Pirates, Templars, Assassins and everything you could wish for in an Assassin’s Creed Game.

This game, wow… It surprises you so much! The game-play on a Next-Gen PC/Console is just extraordinary. The game-play is really fluent and the controls are really easy to learn. The sound on the other hand is a little desynchronized with the real game.

Replayability. Replayability is the easiest thing in this game. You press the “pause” button and ta-da you have Mission Replay part. The UI is really, really awesome. It’s really user friendly and it’s really easy to use

Gameplay: The gameplay. Wow! It has a HUGE free roam! Like, the sea is huge! You have that one ship/Jackdaw and you can battle the biggest of the big ships. There’s so many islands and so many bases you can capture. You can also board ships and take over them! There is so many things in this Assassin’s Creed! It takes EVERYTHING from all the previous Assassin’s Creed games and applied all of them to this one

In the end this made up for all previous Assassin's Creed Fails.

What made this game fall short of a perfect 10 for me? The modern-day game play sections were a chore, at times annoying and distracted from the whole experience. Also repeating some of the main story missions again and again to achieve a perfect synchronization by completing the optional objectives at times became annoying.

SEQUEL: This is the first Assassin's Creed game I have ever played, so I cannot compare the previous version with this one. There are negative reviews here saying it's just like the previous one, but with pirates and some improvements... Do they know what a sequel is?

GLITCHES/CRASHES: There were a couple of crashes though, and probably related to my multiple monitor setup and using V-Sync with monitors of different refresh rates... Don't judge me! It's as stable as my other games played the same way. Some "glitches" seemed intentional because it's supposed to be a "simulation", not real. Play Saints Row IV and you'll see what I mean by intentional glitches for effect.

CONTROLS: This is the only reason the game doesn't get a 10 for me. The "E" key is used for so many things it gets frustrating. Hiding in the bushes with a fresh corpse I just assassinated and another soon to be in front of me, I am faced with a few options for the "E" key: Assassinate, Whistle, Loot, and Carry. There are 4 things at the same time, and the "E" key can handle two because it will distinguish between holding and just typing "E". I was forced to loot my corpses to get that option removed, sometimes that didn't go so well. Also, running... I want to run, not climb every damn thing and slow me down. Maybe there is a way to run normal separate from free run that I haven't discovered yet, but if there isn't there should be. They would have to assign more keys to fix this, and they cannot do that on consoles. They would have to resort to some sort of selection cycling. But listen to what the complaint is... I have too many things my character can do. That's what makes it awesome.

The outside world in the big office building is a little distracting. I'd rather just do the "simulation" the entire time, but maybe that's part of the Assassin's Creed theme that makes it a sequel? Anyway, the whole office and hacking computers could be dumped. It's extra, and a distraction from the real game. No points lost for having extra.

After reading the first part of my review, you may be wondering how it got such a high score from me: It blew me away. The waves, the ships, the weather, epic sea battles, sword fights, guns, stealth, beautiful story line, excellent voice acting, harpoon fishing, swimming combined with spelunking, diving, treasure maps, cut scenes, huge open world map, beautiful imagery, this game has even more than that. The amount of work put into this... It is a masterpiece. I have 83 games in my steam inventory alone. I also use Origin and Uplay, and some games overlap. But of the hundreds, maybe thousands, of video games I have played in my life, this one is way up there with the wow factor. Amazed it was on sale for under $10. It rivals games I have bought for magnitudes more money. As with every purchase you make, buy it on sale. It's dumb to pay full price for anything.

Still not perfect but really not much more to wish, I heard it is very good but it exceeded my expectations. However one thing to mention is that the performance on 99,99% of PCs will be absolutely awful. I was running it on GTX 1080 in SLI so I had no issues, but once I tried with single card, performance is really not good, and add to this idiotic double buffered v-sync that locks your FPS to 30 if you cannot maintain stable 60. And without V-sync it is a tearing disaster. The game is not less demanding than the newest and the most demanding games of 2016. I don't know how it would go if I played it on average setup, probably not so good, but if you play without performance issues then the game is absolutely wonderful. Expand

    - Very outstanding protagonist
    - Interesting History
    - Lots of extra content to do

    - Completely Useless Collectables (Animus Chests and Fragments)
    - Need to disable some graphics functions to run Smooth even with powerful PC
    - Fair to bad BR subtitles

So far Black Flag was the best game in the series due to the gameplay that is sensational, but the story is still not as good as Ezio's.

Every now and then a character mentions how it's been 5 years that Kenway was captain without any reference to time moving prior to this event. Villain transgressions are lost somewhere along the way and you're left just running around killing people. 'Oh look it's that guy again from a while back, let's kill him for something!' Also, get ready for the ending... it comes almost out of nowhere. The percentage tracker on the main page said I was at 62% completion when the game ended thus nullifying any incentive to complete the optional objectives (which I was planning on doing, personally).

Final note: For the love of god, do some google-fu about how to optimize this game for your pc specs. I went 75% of the way on garbage settings before adjusting the proper ones. It's much, much better visually and the controls feel smoother after.

Although I'm not a fan of Assassin's Creed games in general, I really enjoyed this one.

The best parts of it were when it was at it's furthest from the usual Assassin's Creed gameplay (i.e. Ship battles, plundering, sieging forts, sailing the seas, hunting for buried treasure. IMO if this game had just been a separate game to Assassin's Creed it would probably be a 10.

IMO if this game had just been a separate game to Assassin's Creed it would probably be a 10.

Unfortunately it loses the 2 points from perfection due to the mandatory Assassin parts. Missions where the game has you follow people while listening in on their conversations without being spotted proved tiresome the second time they showed up in the game, but unfortunately they had a tendency to show up a lot.

The free running system works most of the time, it's a damn sight better than it was in Ass Creds 1 (The last installment I fully played through before this one). But it still can be quite frustrating. You have a tendency to jump on to the wrong things 20% of the time. This can be EXTREMELY frustrating on missions where accurate movements are paramount because you cannot be spotted, or you have to chase someone and one false move means them getting away and retrying the mission.

The story was entertaining, and on the whole I really did enjoy this game! If anyone has ever played Sid Meier's Pirates!(tm) and thought to themselves "Man! Imagine a mixture of this with Grand Theft Auto!" Then you would be doing yourself a disservice not to pick this game up, because that's exactly what this is. An open world sandbox with a linear story that offers more content to the player that is willing to explore the world that the game has to offer.

(One thing to note on the PC version only, I ran into a game crashing bug roughly half way through the game where I was unable to continue. I googled it and found boards full of people dating back to 2 months previously that had all had the same issue, and Ubisoft had STILL not patched it at that stage... I was fortunate that a user on the Ubi forums posted up a workaround file for it, but it really doesnt reflect well on Ubisoft releasing their game, and leaving it with a game breaking bug for 2+ months after hundreds had reported it to them... Just food for thought, and perhaps a sign that it's a good idea to hold off buying Watch Dogs until we know it's running flawlessly as well!)

I would have liked a variable difficulty setting though, even though I do not play 3rd person fighting games often and lack experience in them the combat is far to easy. Eddy can fight off whole packs of enemy soldiers with little difficulty, the same applies to the sea combat. At first taking on the larger ships like Frigates and Man'o'wars is challenging but once you get a firm of the combat and upgrade your ship you can single handily take on several Man'o'wars and their escorts. Only the four non respawning "legendary" ships provide a challenge after that.

I would have liked some crew management options too, having to take care of the Jackdaws crew and their morale is strangely missing. Criticisms aside though the game is a lot of fun with varied missions and some really thematic set pieces like trying to slowly stealthily sail your ship down a narrow and foggy bayou avoiding watchtowers or fighting running battles through Havana and trying to escape back to your ship through a burning town as the Royal Navy bombard the port you are hiding at. There are loads of side activities to do like the naval assassination missions where you do everything from sinking ships to boarding a ship to kill its captain or escorting another ship past its enemies. There are various land assassination side missions too, some are in cities and others you have to sail to a lonely cove or hidden smuggling den.

You can go hunting to collect items for crafting to improve Kenways equipment or make new outfits and hunt on both land at sea, there is a large multi part quest to collect items to unlock a unique piece of armour as well as many other collectibles with unique rewards. The highest end ship upgrades for instance need you to collect the plans and blueprints, you even need to use a diving bell and dive to ship wrecks for some of them. You can capture some of the ships you take and add them to your fleet, your fleet is a strategic mini game where you can send ships on trade or diplomatic missions and take part in turn based fleet battles. The fleet missions also earn you cash, collectibles and upgrade items. There is a huge amount of content in this game as well as the main storyline and I have got nearly 40 hours of gameplay out of it so far, even though I am only 50% or so through the main story so far so good. There are some interesting and iconic characters and the writing and voice acting is good.

My only complaint is I wish there was more to the world, it's big geographically but feels stale...they're getting close though if they keep up with this trend and hopefully with a more interactive real world story arc the next game could be truly fantastic.

Oh and my five year old pc plays this just fine, not sure where the technical complaints are coming from really.

The new locations and setting in general refreshed the game quite a bit. I'm sure anyone who's at least slightly into pirate history will enjoy this game (there are a few characters in the game that did actually exist in real life and were pirates), so I must give a bonus to the devs for, again, educating the players with some history.
The graphics are amazing, albeit horribly optimized for my system, not to mention the sound design is pretty great as the environment sounds real, to put it bluntly. The shanties are a real fun time in the game they made me just sail and listen for at least a few hours in my total time of gameplay.
Sadly, the game is still glitchy, which is excusable for such a massive game, with glitchy animations, skipping and missing sounds, not to mention the developers forgot to think about their dynamic weather system in cutscenes.
The multiplayer is pretty much the same, with a few added things, but still as fun as before (hey, the SP is new, don't complain about MP as it's not the main factor in this game!)
The only extremely disappointing thing in this game dumbed down mechanics. The AI has been dumed down and now acts very strangely especially in scripted missions so the missions would be easier for the player (distracting someone will only make the tailed person scratch their head and continue on, even if they're suspicious and paranoid) and although the ship fighting has been fleshed out, it has been dumed down as well cannon reload speeds are insane (3 seconds and you can spam your way out of any combat situation as well as no ship sail damage and cannon ammunition type selection), not to mention most ships are the same as the small ones design-wise (speed, weapons, etc, basically dumbed down so the incompetent player could win against a massive man-o-war) and the legendary ship variations make no sense (they can go faster than a jumbo jet, I mean, it's a legendary ship, that gives it a reason to?)
Overall, I'd say it's a massive improvement over the previous game and definitely worth the price (it's fairly long and will take out at least 30 hours of your playtime and even more if you get addicted to the MP)

Having only limited optional objectives definitely helps avoid the cursing words. The missions were heavy on the usual hide-follow-listen instant fail. Looking for collectibles in towns and cities were fun and now they show up on the map without the need to buy location maps; helps streamline the experience. Two tediousness I encountered were the swimming to shore and back and capturing enemy ships. Both were fun at first, but became slow and somewhat annoying later on. Yes, in general this is 'another' Assassins Creed but the pirating stuff in this game is so massive that you sometimes have the feeling the game doesn't feel like a 'true' Assassins Creed game at all. This game is for 80% all about pirating which makes you simply forget all the Assassins stuff. Even the Abstergo intermezzo's are minimal and that says enough...
The way Ubi set up the massive sea, the beautifull Carribean islands and scenery, the great sea battles, the huge amount of upgades to both Edward and his ship is just very well done, no doubt about it.
This whole pirating adds loads of new stuff to the game and when looking back at the history of Assassins Creed, that is just what this game needs. Altough i don't like the fact they are overusing some old stuff from previous versions, this whole new pirating system makes me simply forget all of it.
Another big plus is that this game is well balanced. As i said before, you need upgrades but the amount of resources it takes (money, wood, metal, etc) forces you to battle, hunt, kill, explore, fight and enter ships alot, causing loads of gameplay. I have been playing this game for loads of hours this past 1,5 week. My ship is still not fully upgraded and i'm still at 50% progression.
I remember i threw away my AC3: Revelations CD as the game was simply rubbish but Black Flag is simply awsome. I love it and Ubi, well done.

You have similar 'quick travel' options, you can create stuff from hides, hunt animals and tag enemies similarly. There are some minor glitches that we can look past, but I have been detected by enemies a few times and had to do it all over again.

Sailing the ship can be fun but I was looking forward for bigger interaction. I haven't finished the game yet, but so far I find my pirates rather useless. They do help during ship vs ship battles, but you can't really use them elsewhere (yet?). I remember calling assassins in AC:B to aid me in combat a lot, but in Black Flag you have more 'stealth' missions. Hiding in bushes for a minute or so, so you can learn enemies path to know when it's time to move. Sailing the ship is okay, but I think they should let you scroll out further to really see what's going on around you.

Overall I give this game 8/10. It's fun to play and I'm looking forward to finish it soon, which I usually don't do with most new games.

This game has also made great improvements on the sailing mechanic that was in AC3 and now it's mandatory, unlike in AC3 where it was merely a gimmick to collect more useless money. Speaking of money, it also has use now, since ship upgrades are expensive and add to game play, rather than idiotic city improvements or home decorating. I've heard that there are technical issues, but those aren't fair to judge a game by since my computer ran it perfectly fine. However, one thing that can't be excused is that most of the land missions are a little boring when compared to naval missions, since tailing or eavesdropping missions can be annoying to play. This time around in the present you are a silent protagonist working for Abstergo Entertainment, a mega corporation which is using the memories of Desmond to make AC4. The present day has its own set of collectibles, and the crew that was working with Desmond also makes much welcomed appearances in the story. However, after mastering the ships controls and a few upgrades, something clicked. The naval combat in this game is amazing fun. It just works and if you're not overly cautious you can find yourself in some tight scrapes and the battles can be thrilling. It's pure arcade, but not dumbed down, it's masterfully designed for sheer enjoyment.
I also noticed many user reviews claiming "poor console port" then only siting control issues. Yes this game was designed to be played using a console controller, a great deal of third person games are. If you enjoy this type of game why not buy a controller? Cheaper than most hi-end gaming mice. Is mouse and keyboard sacrosanct or something? We get a superior version of a console game to play on pc, we're not losing we're gaining. I only have sympathy for this kind of bleating when a game that plays better with mouse and keyboard, like Skyrim for instance, is shackled with an unwieldy console menu system or something of that sort. While the series still suffers from boring filler missions, the games mechanics make them fun enough. In my opinion, the game really shines during the naval battles and pirate ship everything. Going from land to sea is seamless and easy, and your pirate crew sets the mood perfectly by cheering for the captain (you). They sing shanties while sailing to really bring the mood home. When you engage in battle, it is completely dynamic and increases immersion. When you can board an enemy ship, everything feels very dynamic which makes the experience feel authentic and makes you feel like you really accomplished something cool. After every battle you feel like a badass.

The same can't really be said for the land fights though. The series has been making the stealth portions easier and easier, and the laughable ease of Assassin's Creed 3 remains fully intact. At least this time around, most of the bushes you hide in actually conceal you. You can still run right into an enemies face, then jump into a bush and they will act like they were "just seeing things", which is mood killing. If you played AC3, you know all about the land combat.

This game is great solely because of the pirate theme and what they have done with naval battles. It feels like it is being tacked onto the Assassin's Creed brand in order to boost sales when it should have been a fresh new IP that could take full advantage of the amazing ideas introduced. The game gets an 8 from me because the pirate aspects truly hold the game up that much.

The mix between the classic rooftop hopping from the early days and the nature parkour we know from AC3 gives the game a nice variety. You'll always have something fun to do and in my experience the most enjoyable thing in AC4 is leaving the main story behind every now and then and just go explore, hunt and sail the open seas. It is extremely nice to pull up next to a huge british ship and blasting it to smithereens. And while I really miss some mechanics from earlier games (like calling assassins to your aid), if you look at it as a pirate game it is completely awesome.

    Why?
Because it features the least "assassin" gameplay of all entries in the series. Its no surprise that the AC gameplay formula has grown incredibly stale and the Naval battles provide an incredibly addicting way to break up that tedium. On top of that the game looks absolutely gorgeous with 4k textures and fantastic water design.

On top of that the game looks absolutely gorgeous with 4k textures and fantastic water design. This also makes the game fairly demanding, so dont walk in expecting a smooth experience on a middle to low end system, this is Ubisoft we're talking about, theyre not exactly the optimization experts (Worth noting, there is NO triple buffering. Use RadeonPro or the Nvidia alternative for a MUCH MUCH MUCH smoother framerate. Seriously Ubisoft, what the hell).
Of course this is all from the perspective of someone who sat out the past 2 iterations in the series. If youve been an avid fan than from what I understand theres not much new in the gameplay department to keep you hooked. The melee combat once again proves to be bewilderingly easy as well, with the counter button being the quintessential win button.
The story however is far more engaging than the usual assassin tripe of old games. Pirates make for far more entertaining and unusual scenarios than any other backdrop from the previous games, and I dare say I actually cared about seeing the story through to the end.
The same can not be said for the new abstergo segments though, as the "Assassins creed" part of the story once again proves to be the worst part of the assassins creed series. If only it was never included in the first place...

    tl;dr:
    Pirates GOOD!
    Abstergo BAD!
    Graphics GOOD!
    Optimization BAD!
    Naval combat/exploration GOOD!
    Assassin gameplay Meh....

Final recommendation: If you haven't played the last one or two its a good place to jump back in. Hopefully they'll spice up the combat in the next iteration.

Interesting Game with beautiful graphics, amazing sea and landscape details, wonderful characters details and textures, game play is good as well, and as usual it is an assassins creed game, fighting mechanics is poor compared to batman arkham, or shadow of mordor.

I've been playing the game basically non-stop since I bought it and I love it. I haven't come across any game breaking bugs yet and the game run smooth for me on highest settings (i7 3.4GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 680 4GB RAM). This is how you're supposed to play a pirate game Huge open-world to explore, fight, trade and come up with other mischief. Tough I admit the trade part is pure basic, butI've been playing the game basically non-stop since I bought it and I love it. The only reason I'm not given 10/10 is because of the multiplayer mode. It's just some generic arena crap PvP/Co-Op. I was hoping for the same open-world style, where you can play with friends in a co-op fleet (or even PvP, for those that care about this I DON'T). As it is the 10 minutes I spent in multiplayer will be it. I'll just player it Single-Player, which is fine with me.

Ironically enough for a game which centers around the concept of genetic ancestry, however, it continually lets itself down by refusing to break away from its own tired and worn-out heritage,

Fans that were bummed out by Assassin’s Creed III will most likely find Black Flag to be a welcoming return to what they love about the series, with a great story, amazingly crafted world and smart additions to the sailing that make it a refreshing part of the Assassin’s Creed formula.

Makes up for the failings of AC3, delivering a fantastic, engaging open world experience. [Jan 2014, p.78]
