First of all, I absolutely love this game, in fact it is; in my opinion the BEST GAME EVER! If you are thinking about getting this, I highly recommend that you do! You should only rate on the actual game. Best game ever. 10 out of 10.(Rating on the game itself) The PC controls are annoying because it shows you signs.

But with the right hardware, this game is unbelievably interesting! It's the beginning of the story of Ezio Auditore, the assassin whose story later continues with the AC Brotherhood and eventually with AC Revelations. Centered around various Renaissance cities and a private villa, even Leonardo DaVinci has a role! Take your time playing it. I have already played it four times and each time I manage to find a few things that I had not discovered. The entire Assassin's Creed series of games is my favorite of all times. Expand

Best game in the franchise. Period. The original Assassin Creed was great but repetitive. I loved it though because of the Crusades Jerusalem setting. The sequel, while less attractive as a setting to me, was a much better game, with richer gameplay. And the story, although not the best in the world, was enjoyable and not totally retarded like it became in future installments.

I played this on an i7 3770K with a GTX680 and an Asus VG248QE running Windows 7 Ultimate.

1st, The graphics are typical for a multiplatform release. (nice but nothing groundbreaking) 2nd, The sound is good, and they managed to pack some atmosphere into this game.
3rd, There is plenty to do, but it does become a little repetitive after playing many hours.
4th, The storyline is, for the most part, good. Some parts are a little fluffed up, but you at least want to stay on board to find out what will happen next, and how it will end. 5th, The controls were unintuitive. So, I remapped them, but they still didn't feel quite right. Finally, I opted to use an XBOX360 controller. For me, this is an unfortunate and unnecessary weak spot, because the PC version of a game should work well with a mouse and keyboard. Other than that, the game is fun to play.
6th, I would've liked to have seen more options to customize the graphics, and maybe the main character as well.
7th, I didn't experience any technical problems like bugs, glitches, freezing, or crashing. However, this game does require Uplay to run in the background. I bought this on Steam, which means I already have Steam running. So, I don't see the point of needing both to play, but since, I didn't experience any issues during my sessions, I'll leave it at that.
All in all, this title was worth adding to my collection.

The story kept me interested, but the gameplay was not interesting enough to keep me wanting to play more of it, meaning, the controls worked really hard against me, even using a controller, and the camera aswell. Other than that, it sometimes felt the story stretched on a bit too much, it could have been shorter, and so would have been better.

Assassin's Creed II, as a game, is simply amazing. This game has exactly what you want in a sequel: continued solid story, improved game mechanics, improved graphics, and more content. AC II continues Desmond's story from the first game, while introducing a new and likable protagonist, Ezio. The new settling of Renaissance Italy is both fresh and exciting, while preserving and improving on the extensive open world gameplay of its predecessor. It also introduces more sophisticated characters which you actually begin to care about, unlike the dull characters of the first game. Gameplay-wise, AC II skillfully introduces enough new mechanics and improvements to keep it fresh, while not feeling too different: you have a greater variety of weapons, including (thankfully!) long-range weapons; you can now use money to buy weapons and armor on your own schedule, instead of waiting around for mission rewards; you can hire mercenaries, thieves, and prostitutes to assist you in your missions; and plenty of other interesting things. While AC II isn't perfect, I think that it is a shining example of what a good sequel should be. Expand

At least for me, that didn't work AT ALL, I lost even on the very first, easy race. I then got myself a decent Xbox-controller for PC, and things changed (make sure it's a rather precise one...I tried a very cheap one which simply didn't work for some of the more complicated jumps).
What a game, what a story, what a main character...

The game has aged well...sure, you can tell it's from 2010, but Florence still looks really nice, very colorful and atmospheric.
Ezio is a very likeable guy, and I quickly was caught up by the story. The moment when he first gets the costume and puts it on is very cool...and iconic. So is the beginning, where you witness Ezios birth, and considering you can follow his story until his death...well, I really think he is one of the coolest characters ever.

The game surely has its flaws... the controls still are sometimes wonky, where you do a race or a more complicated maneuver and fail because the character does something else, something you didn't intend to, like doing a backwards flip from a wall when you tried something else.

Still, the story and the game mechanics are very cool. It's fun to see Ezio turn from an easy-going teenager to a great assassin, fun to rebuild his base, which lets you earn a lot of money, enabling you to unlock upgrades. Once you do, things get a bit easier, as you can carry more ammo and have more health.
The missions and assassinations are nicely embedded in the story, up until the very end. Yes, you WILL have some frustrating moments... stuff like the race against La Volpe (the controls will make that tricky), or assassinating the merchant on the ship. Yes, it will feel unfair, you might rage a bit.
however, even with those flaws (which Ubisoft in some cases fixed in later games... parcour in Unity for example is much smoother and more controlled, with less mishaps happening), this is almost an iconic game about a great character, with a lot of atmosphere and good-looking graphics.
It's a bit dated, but if you want to try out the franchise and see why it was and still is so popular (even though some later entries IMO don't live up to the original games), try out this, and if you like it, continue Ezios story in Brotherhood and Revelations.
Stay patient with the controls, and you WILL succeed. Finishing the optional special jumping-riddles (which will unlock a very special set of armour at your base, which is almost imba) took a lot of attempts on some parts, but felt ultimately satisfying.
This is an improvement over the original AC, and it is the beginning of possibly the coolest and most iconic of the assassins. I still like this Ezio-trilogy (2, BH, Revelations), III and Unity much more than BF, Rogue, or the rather dull and disappointing Syndicate. Check it out, its easy to find for just a few bucks usually!

An okay game with some pretty severe technical limitations.

Graphics look pretty bad; graphics attempting to be photo-realistic in older generations tend to age pretty badly. There's horrible pop-in; objects and characters literally popping into existence 10-15 meters away from you. There's an FPS-limit of 60. The game stutters pretty badly on modern hardware with Windows 10.

The game stutters pretty badly on modern hardware with Windows 10.
There's no Field of View options (and default is annoyingly narrow).
Mouse & Keyboard is unusable because of insane Mouse Acceleration.

Now, if you're willing to overlook the horrible technical limitations above, the game itself is okay.
The story has a nice ending twist, but also has a lot of dumb or boring elements throughout, kind of averaging it out.
The combat is a boring, floaty spam-fest. I groan most of the times I'm forced to engage in it. It is extremely easy, to the point where I could have beaten most fights (including the final boss) about 20 times over without breaking a sweat. So whenever I could I just ran away to skip combat or threw a smoke bomb and insta-killed everybody.
The side-missions are a boring slog. Most of them are literally a single sentence of story at the start and then a go-to-area-and-kill/punch/deliver, sometimes with a timer (I think there's literally 4 types of missions: race, kill, punch and deliver).
The parkour is a mixed bag. Some of it is pretty nice, but there are a lot of momentum-breaking animations that really break the flow of the game. Where it shines is the jumping puzzles, of which most are located in the Assassin Tombs; those were a highlight of the game.

Another highlight of the game was the music. There's some pretty great tracks in there.

So in short: Technical limitations bring down an otherwise okay game. It's just not worth playing with so many amazing games that can be played instead. And you don't need to play this one for the story. Because apparently none of the persistent plot goes anywhere in any of the later games.

Flaws which have caused me to give up again just now - and remember this is months after release so various patches have been deployed.
    1. Volume - there is almost none, you really need more than double your settings/speakers to get basic sound for the game. That's not too inconvenient until your system plays non-AC2 sounds and blows your ears off.
    2. Mouse Control - incredibly sluggish reactions even on the highest response settings.
    3. Keyboard - the controls are aimed at console users and sometimes inaccurate. Combined with the mouse problem you never feel you have smooth control this time.
    4. Save games - I just lost an entire session of play as the game decided not to bother saving at any point: I'd even transitioned to new zones and seen multiple specific "Syncs" but it's all gone.

The User Reviews speak volumes and I've no idea what incentives the critics received to for their reviews: I presume they played the console versions and then just knocked a few points off.

    AVOID.

I'veMy original review: 4/10 Bought the game on April 19, 2012, expecting most of the issues to be fixed and based on generally positive reviews for the series. I thought it would be a good place to start that's not too far back while still being relatively modern. I can see the appeal of the game immediately: it's an immersive, very beautiful game with a funky UI and great story-telling. I've played it for about 2 hours now. HOWEVER, it gets MASSIVE low points for VERY VERY VERY bad control set-up. I'm not against innovative controls, or controls that work both on the PC and on consoles. Skyrim is a good example of that - you feel that the controls were made to be console-friendly, but they're never inhibiting your game play. This game, however, made controls not only un-intuitive, but also very difficult to understand, having to go through menus to understand which button is the 'Head', the 'Open Hand', the 'Armed Hand', and the 'Feet'. None of this is explained in the game itself. NONE. The color-coding presumably makes it easier for console players to understand, but doesn't work at all for the PC. Do yourself a favor and buy the console version of this title. This is a bad port.

After finishing the game: 8.5/10. You basically have to memorize the different key bindings and get through the first bit to learn the controls. Don't be mislead by my high score - the controls are the single most annoying thing in this game. It's a set of 4 basic controls, which change if you right click the mouse, and then you have to execute sequences of them to do many things... and the game decides that it would be fun to make you do some harder sequences as the game goes on. If you look past that, however, the game is very deep, has multiple meaningful side quests, and is generally a fantastic game. Music is phenomenal. If it's possible, I would recommend you play this with a controller.

Too many quests were timed races/platforming or worse escort missions. Combine this with not-too-perfect controls and frustration or even a rage quit is guaranteed. Since most enemies can counter yours counter attacks as well as yours disarm attempts combat drags on forever. And there's way too much combat in this game mostly caused by overabundance of hypersensitive guards patrolling the streets. Stealth is almost not an option here. Most quests inevitably end up in combat. The very few missions with forced stealth are poorly done and irritating. The game is agonizingly long. Half way through I started praying for the game to end. Expand

Absolutely beautiful game world that is hindered on the PC. It is obvious the design of this game was strictly for consoles, which I do not really mind. But when that is the case, don't release it on PC and steal our money. If you can't take the time to make the controls more PC friendly, then just don't waste our time and take our money. When I play this, I feel like I'm playing a pirated or emulated game!!! It's so sloppily copied from the console game it's not even funny... it's actually sad. At the beginning of the game it shows you the controls using the Xbox360 color coded icons. I found myself mashing random buttons on the keyboard having no idea what corresponded.

There are so many bugs and issues I don't even know where to start, from messed up cutscenes to bad controls. If you want to play Assassin's Creed II, get it for another system (it's a really good game when it's not on PC). I just don't know where to begin on the shortfalls of this game compared to its console counterparts, whether it's the invasive DRM or the appalling cut scenes where the audio is about 1-3 seconds out of sync.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin's Creed II is a nice game, untill you don't play it.
Even if the story is really nice and involving, the whole gameplay is wrong.
Commands are overly unreactive, counterattack has 50/50 chance of working, regardless if you got the timing correct, so does every other combinations. Some weapon, like the hidden-blade, are supposed to oneshot every enemy, but that would make them overpowered, so they completely don't respond to, making them completely useless, and forcing the use of the sword.
Unlike Assassin's Creed 1 some enemy (generally higher grade) are hardcoded to not die until their like hasn't gone below 3 squares, and since you can't attack them without getting stopped, you're forced to stay and continuing counterattacking them, losing tons of time and excitement in the battle.
Another annoying problem is the pointless, completely broken and unpopular platform Uplay.
Because f*** you Steam user, until you don't register your copy of the game, you're still a pirate.

The video game is much better than the previous title. It's because with more budget they used another graphic engine. The gameplay is almost the same with improvements; you can already swim in the water or in the rivers of Italy. The Renaissance period is fine, facing the Medicis, Sabonarola, and Rodrigo Borgia. And knowing Da Vinci, Catherina Esforza, seeing more of the brotherhood is a success. The final fight is a duel with a clean fist with the antagonist, and the final revelation amazes.

It was the same Assassin's Creed game as the original. But did everything better, from the perspective of game-play. Also it brought the story of the assassin's to a place and time where it could really shine.

Everyone says it's the best AC game to this day. I don't know. Must've aged badly.
The controls are the clunkiest controls I've ever encountered in a AC game. It uses "universal button symbols," it didn't work in Prince of Persia two years ago. Why there can't be normal symbols? The graphics are bad for a 2009, there are games that look far better (Uncharted 2, Batman AA, CoD:MW2).

The story's just a "pyramidal revenge hunt," you're going after people you don't even know their names. The game has "disposable characters," e. g. your entire family. I can't believe the deuteragonist is Leonardo da Vinci, he got way too much space. One of the few good things about the game is the protagonist, probably the only likeable in the whole series. But I don't get why all the characters have super thick "Italian" cringe-ass accent. Ridiculous.
Easily the weakest entry in the series (for me). And I played AC1, Bloodlines and Unity.

The best one out of the series so far. Assassin's Creed II improves immensely on the first one with exciting gameplay, a likeable main character and a very impressive story.

An amazing action game and a great improvement over its predecessor. The story is spectacular continuing the Assassin's Creed storyline. The graphics look great and the gameplay is amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you haven't played Assassin's Creed II yet I have to warn you that this review has some spoilers about the story of this masterpiece. In this game you control the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore. One day your family is executed in front of your eyes and you are going to get revenge. In this game you travel at many citys of Italy of the 15th century. It's my favourite game of all time because of the great story. The missions were always fun to do. The only thing I didn't really like at this game was that the fighting controls aren't very good but it is not a very big problem because the game is based on stealth. The freerunning feels awesome. The PC port is ok. I have found some bugs but they are small things and they 're not a big deal. I give this masterpiece a 9/10 and I recommend it to everyone who hasn't played yet. If you haven't tried it create a steam account and play it now. Expand

My favourite AC game anno 2018. I only wished they would do a remaster on the PC. The game looks dated with the amount of pop-in going on.

Shows great improvement to its predecessor. Game-play is good , story evolves in a good way.
Ezio Auditore is arguably the best game character of this century and his character development is on point. Story keeps getting interesting with historical characters.
A must play game for sure and a classic.

The sequel improves every aspect of the game, Ezio is an amazing protagonist, and the story is long, great, and not at all tedious.

Great game, incredible progress compared to first assassin's creed game. + A variety of missions, + a good story, + interesting characters, + beautiful locations, - a bad port from PS and DRM.

I very often heard and read that the first part of this game was a kind of strong breakthrough in the gaming industry ... and I completely agree with this. Although I liked the subsequent games after the second part in my own way, it’s a pity that the company left the initial idea and atmosphere so much, in the future, for the sake of marketing and money.

Biggest jump in the series is right between the first and second title. It introduces us to charismatic Ezio de Auditore loved by so many fans. Pretty long and great game, giving it 9/10 because Brotherhood with its story was more memorable for me.

Im surprised about the user score, this game definitely deserves a much higher score, it has interesting world and one of the most amazing era in human history to learn about, the music is so amazing and the story is well written.
The combat has some issues but it covers the assassin style well.

The best AE game for sure.

Переход серии на более блокбастерные (массовые) рельсы. Отход от философии к действию и ощущению действия. История проста, полна решающих действия, но последствия этих действий вам не дадут ощутить в полной мере. A masterpiece. Everything what first game did well, Assassin's Creed II does better. Very immersive gameplay, with great story and soundtrack. It's very tough to get bored while playing this gem. And Ezio Auditore, one of the most famous characters in video games history. Totally must play.

  1. Assassin’s Creed II is a gem, a truly masterpiece also on PC. Developing a new economic system, and bringing more attention to combats, notoriety and context-script, Ubisoft achieves an awesome and epic experience. This sequel is far better than the first one.
  2. The PC version of last year's beautiful action adventure is lots of fun, but you'll have to overcome its online-only copy protection and high price point.
  3. Two years later, Assassin's Creed tries again to make real those promises from Ubisoft, and prove itself as a better game than it was. The truth is that, despite the Renaissance setting, the vivid locations and the historical landmarks, the new features added don't really improve the sequel: the same repetitive mechanics remain, as the flawed enemy AI, a rough combat system and moments of frustration coming from issues with the camera and the control response in the platform sections. Assassin's Creed II it's still a good game but far from the masterpiece Ubisoft has been promising.
