The graphics, beautiful. The Free running, excellent, some tweaks made to improve it, and endless fun to be had. The story, FANTASTIC, and WAY better than Assassins creed 1. There is more to do, and a wider, more diverse range of directions to go, so it is not the same things over and over again. And the events that are taking place interest you and draw you in. The Combat system remains largely unchanged, but larger scale of enemy difficulties makes for some more challenging and often more enjoyable fights. And I love the cash aspect of this game. Instead of just having a sword and a dagger, the ability to buy and upgrade weapons, to save for the next one, is great! Plus the ability to upgrade the Villa (Sort of home town) in order to gain more revenue is good as. So, based purely on playing the game itself, i give it a 10. I give Ubisoft a 0 for trying their hardest to lose as many customers as they can, but admittedly they've put out a damn good game. I will add that this is an obvious console port, with the menu better controllable with keys, as well as the game telling you to press the "hand" key rather than the shift key (the HUD has an Xbox button style diamond like in Assassins Creed 1, with images corresponding to each button on an Xbox controller). Once you get past this, and the keys become muscle memory, you will have no more issues with it. I would give it 9.5/10 but there's no such option so I'm rounding up. Expand

i found this game extremely fun, the environments are beautiful and i didn't find it overly repetitive. the story is great as are the characters. the only problem is the combat with the enemies waiting and taking turns to be stabbed but its easily ignored. the exploration is great, i'm sure most of the negative reviews are about the drm not the game itself.

It´s incerdible game, increadibly great world, the story is extremly gripping. there is great freedom in way to kill you target, the play time is good as well, about 40hours include some side quest (not all of them) and sometime some quest repeating :-)...but anyway it´s one of best game I ever play (the game not the Ubisoft launcher :D )

I think it's ABSOLUTELY ridiculous that people are bashing the game because of the DRM. The DRM does not make the game any worse. The DRM does not make the game any worse. I understand that your gaming experience can be ruined by the fact that you have a really spotty internet connection, but that's just the experience, not the game itself. When I bought this game, the first thing I noticed was the big box on the bottom that says "Continuous Internet Connection Required." If you see that, don't buy the game. It's that simple. I completely disagree with Ubisoft for using the DRM, but don't let that detract from a great game. Now for my actual review:

I loved this game. It was MUCH better than Assassin's Creed. The combat itself hadn't improved all that much, though I really liked being able to use the hidden blades in combat, and the attachments that went with it. I particularly loved the fact that climbing wasn't as slow, as Ezio could climb swiftly if there was a clear path to the top.

What I was most impressed about was the story. In the original AC, you played as Altaïr, who really had no character presence. He was just a blade with a voice, and you never really connected with him. However, Ezio was fantastic. His personality had so much depth, and as the story progressed, you really felt Ezio progress as well. Hats off to Ubisoft on this one, regardless of the DRM.

That being said, I give a 9/10, one point off for the numerous times that I would jump from a wooden beam, and automatically jump diagonally away from my destination.

To all those complaining about the DRM:

If you consider yourself a "PC Gamer," you should really have a good internet connection. It's 2011, catch up with the times.

This is a really great game so what if it has/had DRM to be honest it doesn't matter unless you are installing it on like 5 PCs in which case I have to ask why you would be installing it on that many PCs. The people who say the DRM boots you out of the game well I have never been booted out of the game because of the DRM.

Game is really good and the DRM system is updated. Missions are really awesome some of them are hard but I still give this game 10/10. Most Assassin's Creed players will enjoy this game. And it also comes with free DLC unlike for consoles.

I found this game thoroughly enjoyable, and i'm not going to whine over how highly dodgy the DRM is, even though I do have few connection problems. I will agree with the multitude of people who complain that it is pretty shoddy, but the game itself, not counting the DRM, is a true masterpiece

The storyline is highly involving and intricate, the time setting couldn't really have been more appropriate and I found Renaissance Italy a very interesting setting to work from. The graphics are fantastic, and even though the system requirements are a bit beefy, I couldn't help every once in a while climbing a viewpoint simply to stand there and gaze at the surrounding cityline.
A major aspect of the first game was the non-linear style of play, which I loved. This has been very nicely updated and improved in the sequel, which a vast range of side-missions to complete, as well as having entire cities to roam around almost freely, allowing you to decide when to complete a main objective; you can go and rush through the main story if you want or leave it out until you've had some fun with it.
The fighting system, freerunning and climbing aspects, the largest parts of the game, have been improved very nicely, with more freedom as to how you can conduct yourself about the city. The in-depth and well-explored characters also allow the player to feel immersed in the game. All of this makes for a game that can be replayed again and again and will always feel a little different.

The Renaissance is one of the best times in AC series for now, lots of different locations, each with its unique sightseeings and interesting missions. It's hard to say why, but for some reason with every new part of AC we are going farther from silent kills and that kind of actions, more stupid submissions (( It' sad. But the AC2 still has the soul of stealth.

The overall sound is amazing with a great soundtrack which is also great to play with an instrument and some excellent sound effects as well as top voice acting. The platforming is way faster and better in many ways such as the gameplay that has you always interested. You can get about 12 hours out of this game and even though the replay value is not much I had the desire to play it again, which I did. Now to the part everyone hated, the Ubisoft DRM is something that has people really mad, but I had surprisingly no problems with this. Overall you should get this game though you should be really careful about the DRM for mac users the best option is buying it in the mac app store and but I think overall the best thing you could do is get it for console, yet its worth a try on PC/Mac. The graphics are great and at medium to max settings with anti-aliasing, look better than the console equivalent due to the vastly superior shadows and lighting. I do however feel sad that the PC version has ended up getting low user scores because of DRM, because the game itself is great. All in all, it's a great game and is now available very cheaply.

The video game is much better than the previous title. It's because with more budget they used another graphic engine. The gameplay is almost the same with improvements; you can already swim in the water or in the rivers of Italy. The Renaissance period is fine, facing the Medicis, Sabonarola, and Rodrigo Borgia. And knowing Da Vinci, Catherina Esforza, seeing more of the brotherhood is a success. The final fight is a duel with a clean fist with the antagonist, and the final revelation amazes.

One of the things that make this a peak game to me was the pace. While progressing, I always have in the back of my head thinking; when will the game become repetitive like the last one? It doesn't, It just becomes harder and harder in a better ways while also giving you a much improve equipment and ways to deal with the task you're supposed to do.

A great load of history learned while they still manage to connect it through the story, Landscape to not just Parkour at but also learned their past & as well having some of the greatest speeches I've heard in video games.

A jogabilidade apresenta alguns problemas durante as escaladas, porém, é simples e intuitiva, principalmente nos combates. Os gráficos são lindos para a época e envelheceram super bem.

I don't know how come but I feel like I have been familiar with the series my whole life without ever playing it. In my childhood GTA and Assassin's Creed were two household names all kids in my area have heard about and though I even managed to play Vice City and San Adreas in my early days I didn't manage to get my hands on any installment of Assassin's Creed since then... untill now.

Of course I decided to start from the original AC game and was... disappointed? The animation felt sluggish, the controls were messed up, the whole gameplay simply didn't feel "right". What I was pleasantly surprised with is this whole going-to-your-ancestors-memory thing - I wonder why the fact that in AC you aren't just an assassin living in different time periods of the past but also are an ordinary man living in present time through memories of whose you have access to all the assassins from the past because they were his ancestors has been so carefully hidden from me - I don't know about you but for me that is quite interesting. Anyway, after playing AC1 for about 6 hours I decide to give it up and move on to something else. I will return back to AC franchise 2 months later...

What convinced me to give the franchise a second try was: 1) my friend assuring me to not even trying to give AC1 a shot because of how bad it is in comparison to others 2) AC2 has a "must-play" badge on metacritic so it had to be worth the try 3) I still wanted to understand what made AC franchise so popular and successful - there should be a reason. As I found out later - Assassin's Creed 2 was the reason.

From the moment the first cut scene kicked in I knew the next 30 hours are going to be interesting - the facial animation and the overall acting was so good, duuude, I can only imagine how mindblowing it looked back in 2009. The voiceacting and the italian accent is top notch - the characters feel alive and relatable. The plot is amazing - just a classic story about family, revenge, justice and power (which eventually expands to something more....epic?) Nothing feels overstretched or added just in sake of prolonging the game time. Can't say much about the sidequests as I didn't bother myself much doing them. Also I was surprised AC2 continues the main story of Desmond which takes place in the modern times because to be honest I don't think I know any other game that did that before or after (oh, I know - MW2 and MW3 but that's a little bit different because after MW1 became a huge success it was easier to take risks and not finish the story in the second installment but do that in the third part instead as they knew MW2 will be success too and they will have to make MW3 anyway while Ubisoft couldn't be sure Assassin's Creed original game will succeed so making it just a piece of a bigger puzzle was really a brave move, in my opinion).

What is the first thought when we think about Assassin's Creed games? Story? Music? Murders? Hidden Blade? Maybe. But what really comes to mind first is the parkour. The ability to climb buildings to the very top no matter how tall the building is, jumping from roof to roof in an effortless manner that's what AC games are actually all about and that's what really lacked for me in the first AC game - getting from point A to point B just wasn't funny. Assassin's Creed 2 is complete opposite in this manner - I was simply enjoying running, climbing and jumping around. Ubisoft did a great job in animating Ezio's movements so your parkour could feel as smooth as possible. I also appreciated what they did to the Leap of Faith - the right animation, the right sound design and the right combination of both makes such act of bravery truly breathtaking.

Not everything is perfect. Combat system is pretty straigtforward and doesn't offer you much freedom and space for improvisation. While counter-attacks cut scenes looks bad ass the overall fighting sequences definitely lack depth and after some time you just treat the fights like chores you have to do in order to move further.

Conclusion: Assassin's Creed 2 is a perfect sequel to its predecessor. Now I understand why Ubisoft believed in it despite quite flawed the first installment of the series and why this franchise has become as big as it is today with millions of fans all around the globe.

Parkour demands practice and is actual gameplay not "pres W and shift" and don't worry,
Fighting is very satisfactory with nice animations that are even better than latest titles.
AC as series became game that chase its own tale in terms of story but first 3 AC with titles in between (Brotherhood and such...) with AC IV and Rouge are very very very excellent on itself and can exist without others parts. I like others AC's but they are lacking much for titles like AC II.

Assassin's Creed II marks the beginning of a more complex and intricate universe within the Assassin's Creed series.

The game is undeniably amazing, showcasing substantial improvements over its predecessor, surpassing the first installment in many ways. However, if I were to choose between the two, I'd lean towards the first game's setting with the gameplay enhancements of Assassin's Creed II. The initial title allowed me to truly embody an assassin, representing the assassin brotherhood, while the sequel follows a frustrated yet awe-inspiring Italian protagonist on a quest for vengeance, trying to find his place in an era where assassins are not as prominent as they were during the crusade era in the first game.

What I absolutely adored in Assassin's Creed II is the gameplay. While it boasts an abundance of optional chests that beckon completionists like myself, it is an enjoyable experience to traverse the beautifully crafted open-world environment. The parkour mechanics have been significantly refined, making climbing and maneuvering more fluid, faster, and complex than in the first game. I've never felt such an exhilarating sense of freedom and agility while exploring in any other game released before this one.

While the story of Assassin's Creed II may not offer precisely what the first game did, it is captivating in its own right. Featuring a formidable and compelling antagonist, the narrative leaves a strong impact. Furthermore, the game not only advances Desmond's overarching story but also marks the inception of Ezio's journey, who has become one of the most beloved characters in the gaming history.

In conclusion, Assassin's Creed II elevates the series to new heights, introducing a more intricate and engaging world. Assassin's Creed II is an absolute must-play for fans of the franchise, as it exemplifies the franchise's evolution and sets the stage for the enthralling adventures that follow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The greatest AC game of all time, and remains so till date!
Why you may ask ? Good question.
Assassin's Creed 2 offers an incredible story, following the life of Ezio Giovanni Auditore Da Firenze, a Young nobleman playboy, that becomes a well honed assassin following his Family's unfair execution, the story shows the incredible development of Ezio, and change of his motives, persona and goals to something much more bigger and impactful, on his journey he meets up with many people that guide him or change his view on how the world works and how the system is being tampered so easily by evil shadowy hands, this story, disregarding its simplicity, remains one of the greatest stories in any game, I dare say.
The gameplay, while dated, remains complicated, hard to master, and needs more attention and wisdom than just spamming some buttons, making the game quite unresponsive at times, but much more immersive.
The graphics are decent, not something that will blow you off, but quite colourful and fitting each atmosphere, since each city has its own ambience, Monteriggioni is all dark and gloomy, Venice is all colourful and alive, Firenze is all saddened and grey, and Forli is all dark and dirty, giving each map, city and location a unique feel to it.
The music is nothing to ignore as well, since the "Ezio's family" Soundtrack became the trademark of the entire franchise, the music varies a lot to suit each city as well, pushing the entire uniqueness of each map towards the extreme.
In summary, if you like great story-telling, amazing music, immersive gameplay and exquisite graphics, AC 2 is right there for you, and from me, it's a solid 9.5/10. (Since Metacritic doesn't allow commas, I gave it a 10, anything that surpasses the left side of the decimal value goes straight to the next one, ex: 8.5-> 9)

When will these companies learn that no matter what they do to try and stop people cracking these games, the hackers will always find a way around it. All they do by introducing these DRM measures is to alienate the people who actually buy a legitimate copy. Since crappy always-on DRM was removed, this game has become a timesink for me. Great atmosphere, and always that nagging feeling to get that one more mission done :)

While Ezio is not as compelling a character and Italy a less compelling setting, the game and mechanic is head and shoulders above the first game. Even managing the household to get income is horribly addictive. Highly recommended.

I like this game, good textures, a nice story (it takes a while to complete) and some pretty good combat. I just don't like that it is a real long game and you get stuck on levels a little too much. But overall I absolutely LOVE this game! 9 out of 10 is what it gets

AC2 has just about everything that the first game lacked. Ubisoft seems to have learned a lot from the many problems AC1 had. Despite issues with the camera changing its angle at the most inopportune time, resulting in several keyboard-smashing moments, the controls, combat and gameplay are infinitely more enjoyable than the first game. Ezio is a compelling character who we really get to know over the course of the game. Best of all, I was always kept wanting to see what would happen next in the story. The variety of missions keeps things interesting, and the soundtrack is simply incredible- one of the best in any game I've played. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a good story with substance and mystery. Expand

Aside from Ubisoft's sketchy DRM, The game itself is brilliant. If you loved the original, then this game will not disappoint. the only thing about Assassin's Creed that will drive you nuts is the bad camera angles that happen the odd occasion, where you are forced to jump on a very strange angle, or jump and grab a ledge from a side-scroller point of view. with a gamepad, I'm sure itsAside from Ubisoft's sketchy DRM, The game itself is brilliant. Aside from that, The game is very well done, right down to the small details that set this game apart from other Free-Runner games like Mirror's Edge and the like. Great story, Great voice acting, and Great Lore. Worth every penny. Expand

A truly marvelous game that recreates the 15th century Italy down to the finest detail. The world feels alive and immersive and it's hard not to completely get sucked into it. Running on the rooftops of Florence and Venice is an unforgettable experience.

I honestly couldn't find any major flaws with this game, perhaps except for the fact that the first few memories really are a bit

  1. Assassin’s Creed II is a gem, a truly masterpiece also on PC. Developing a new economic system, and bringing more attention to combats, notoriety and context-script, Ubisoft achieves an awesome and epic experience. This sequel is far better than the first one.
  2. The PC version of last year's beautiful action adventure is lots of fun, but you'll have to overcome its online-only copy protection and high price point.
  3. Two years later, Assassin's Creed tries again to make real those promises from Ubisoft, and prove itself as a better game than it was. The truth is that, despite the Renaissance setting, the vivid locations and the historical landmarks, the new features added don't really improve the sequel: the same repetitive mechanics remain, as the flawed enemy AI, a rough combat system and moments of frustration coming from issues with the camera and the control response in the platform sections. Assassin's Creed II it's still a good game but far from the masterpiece Ubisoft has been promising.
