Another incomplete skeleton of a game. It's functional and looks pretty, but that's about all it has going for it. It's yet another half-baked, repetitive grindfest of a "live service".

However, I don't doubt that Bioware did all they could with it. The blame should be aimed at EA for taking Bioware out of their element.

Anthem is a backhand slap in the face to anyone who spent real money on the game. Missions are literally a broken record of fetch quests and protect the objective scenarios, weapons are boring and unimaginative, and the story is abysmal.

On launch, Anthem is plagued with bugs, immersion breaking loading screens and possibly the worst UI layout I've ever encountered in a game. There's no ping system, and even the ability to set waypoints is entirely non existent.

Fort Tarsis is desolate, sad, and boring. The handful of NPCs scattered throughout the fort are horrifically insufferable, with awful voice acting and even more atrocious animations. It's like trying to have a conversation with a Chuck E Cheese animatronic.

On top of all this, they have the audacity to throw microtransactions into this pile of garbage, trying to squeeze every last penny out of anyone they can. It's a blatant middle finger to the fans and shows that whoever approved this decision clearly doesn't care about providing you with quality content; they just want to make their investors happy.

The only reason I'm even giving this game a 1 rating is because the art department absolutely nailed their job. Even though the world of Anthem severely lacks variety in it's biomes, the world is beautiful and the mech suit designs are superb. Well done to anyone that had a hand in the artistic direction of Anthem, you've done a wonderful job.

In conclusion, Anthem is up there among the worst video games I have ever played in my life. I never thought I'd live to see the day where a looter shooter game was worse than Destiny 2 at launch, but BioWare have done the unimaginable.

Edit: Please note that EA playing a part in the creation of this game has absolutely nothing to do with my review. I think the game is trash because of the content, mission variety, story, NPC design, bugs, and so on.

This is a half-game product, with a lot of bugs, unbalance gameplay and unnecessary obsessive pieces of the plot. But we have really nice basis for good game in the future.

Played about about 10 hours so far, I haven't had any technical issues, and loading screens don't seem long like many suggest (Possibly because I use SSD?) I really enjoy this game, don't see where the hate is coming from.

Its surprising to see how many people that give it bad reviews have never played the game or have not put at least 2 hours into it. Its not the best game but it is pretty good. After a while i could see how i can be lame but they plan on adding stuff to the game later.

This game is really not fun at all, many bugs, no excitement in game-play. This is the first PVE game that will make me fall asleep. "Best" Game Bioware & EA. If you want to sleep, play anthem. For sure will feel sleepy after few games. Waste of talent.

It's still early, and there's a lot that could happen to the game in the future for better or worse. As it stands right now, however, Anthem beats all my expectations. I was initially very apprehensive with another EA title, and considering the last BioWare title didn't turn out as well as we'd hoped, you can understand why.

I was initially very apprehensive with another EA title, and considering the last BioWare title didn't turn out as well as we'd hoped, you can understand why.

What I was not prepared for, though, was an incredibly fun experience with polished looking visuals, excellent diversity between classes (javelins) and dialogue animations that were better than anything i've seen in a game to date. The facial expressions on Owen, especially, are flawless and really give him such a life as I never could have imagined.

The game feels very much like a twist of Destiny, Mass Effect, and Warframe, but it does it very well. I will go so far as to say, it's the game that Destiny should have been. The synergy between teammates abilities, and the gun-play, are so well executed, and the flight mechanics feel so smooth.

The Day One patch also turned this game around. Prior to all the fixes that they made, my score was much lower. But after having experienced both pre and post update, I can honestly say that I have a tremendous amount of faith in the continued development and support that this game will receive, and I'm looking forward to limitless hours playing.

All the 10/10 reviews saying "it'll be fixed with patches" & "More content is coming soon" tells you everything you need to know.

They're charging for it NOW so it should be judged NOW. Personally I think this could be a great game, in about 18 months & 3 DLCs time and im more than happy to wait and pick up the "complete" game then (for half the price)

The gameplay is fun when it works, but the more you play the more cracks appear and it's not a great launch either. I hope this will be a good game in about a month or so, but then again it should be a good game on launch. If you're considering buying I would definitely wait for updates.

When I heard about Anthem back in 2017 I was excited for Bioware to redeem themselves and prove that the mass effect trilogy wasn't the last good thing they had...At first I wanted to blame the corruption that is EA. After finishing the story, playing numerous side missions, and interacting with the citizens of Tarsis I have come to conclude that this poorly optimized Alpha is as much Bioware's hotdog water as it is EA's. It's a shame that a beautiful world can feel so dull and lifeless. Ill give it a 1 for effort

This game provides the most fun in a shooter in a pretty long time. Controlling a javelin and flying around is a blast. The game is smooth and the world is the most beautiful I've seen to date.
The story is decent, and i see myself playing this for a while.
A big issue is the content that they have provided on release. You will have fun putting 30-40 hours in, and then what? Grinding

The story of Anthem is enough, but it does lack a lot of depth. With how well acted the parts we did get were there is a clear miss on what could of been had the story been flushed out to closer to 35-40 hrs instead of just 25-30. Once completed they tease more but I found myself a little wanting as with a new world I wasn't fully immersed with what was here.

The combat is satisfying and at times amazing, flying around is a treat. The gun sounds and music as you combat enemies is outstanding. The combat at other times though is utterly frustrating in design (looking at you GM2 and up strongholds). The loot drops will keep you going as there is enough of them, however diversity of gun models etc. could be more numerous.

Overall Anthem is a game that will satisfy looter shooter fanatics and is not a bad game to play through even for a few weeks via the origin pass rather then outright purchasing the game. You can see what will be a year from now and see a game that will be much more deserving of a 8-9 score by then but unfortunately at the end of the day the lack of polish leaves me wanting a bit more.

Bioware destroyed by EA too at long last. They somehow managed to hold their own for a decade before their soul evaporated for good. Anthem is a soulless, naive, contentless, primitive looter shooter with messy gunplay and minimal mission variety. The game is obviously incomplete and any RPG elements are simplified to the extreme. RIP Bioware.

I mean if your gonna convey the story thru a radio atleast get someone atleast pleasant to listen to. Is it that hard to find a radio host with experience? The missions arent that much different from ME3's multiplayer. Except on a larger map. Its defend point A from X, go to B and shoot X, Escort from point A to B, scan a thing, destroy X. The only good thing is the flying but even that is hampered by the strange control scheme. I'd avoid this like the plague and go play the Mass Effect trilogy instead. If you really want multiplayer. You'll find many reviews giving zeros or tens, and few in between, which is where I feel the game truly lies. Sadly, user reviews on metacritic are more representative of people's feelings, good or bad, rather than facts.

You'll find many reviews giving zeros or tens, and few in between, which is where I feel the game truly lies. Sadly, user reviews on metacritic are more representative of people's feelings, good or bad, rather than facts.

I'll do my best to provide an honest review of the game, by presenting both pros (+) and cons (-).

+ The gameplay mechanics are executed well for the most part. Flying and shooting (to a lesser extent) feels great and satisfying.

+ The game is pretty, despite the graphical downgrade from the E3 trailer. Exploration during free roam is entertaining, slightly reminiscent of Xenoblade Chronicles X, with lots of verticality.

+ The plot is decent, albeit short, but doesn't come close to even a fraction of Bioware's true potential. I'm only presenting this as a pro since the game is a looter-shooter at heart and not a story-driven RPG.

+ There is a solid foundation and potential for growth, which is something a live-service game desperately needs.

Unfortunately, many of these positive aspects of Anthem are ruined by its flaws.

    - Level design renders the enjoyable flight mechanics pointless outside of free roam. Shooting becomes almost annoying and somewhat of a chore due to the excessive lightshows that obscure your vision, along with aimbotting enemies (who are also blatant bullet sponges).

    - The AI is rather dull, reducing enemies to mindless drones and the player to a mindless shooter. There is almost no need for tactics in this game. Anthem unfortunately also suffers from bugs, and a severe loading screen issue with frequent CTDs. The game is also badly optimized, barely running on high settings at a very unstable 50-60 FPS, on a GTX1070 and i7 CPU.

    - The graphical downgrade is nothing new to the gaming industry, but feels like a bait-and-switch nonetheless. However, the worst offense is the utter lifelessness of the game's hub area, Fort Tarsis. What appeared as a densely populated, living town in the trailer has been rendered a dead silent (literally), forced first-person, slow-paced and boring place to be. The NPCs are also lazily programmed to stand around while cycling poor animations.

    - For a looter-shooter, the loot is honestly rather disappointing. Both the actual loot and the looting mechanic. Don't epect to find unique items, since most are simply dull reskins with higher stats. Looting in Anthem is also a huge grindfest about three hours in and beyond, with missions always being one of two different types. Furthermore, as long as you play on the same difficulty level, all high-level items have the same odds of dropping regardless of activity.

    - The endgame is stale, which could be excused as the game is a live service. However, considering just how quickly you can reach the endgame, most people will find themselves at a halt with no incentive to keep playing.

    - Since this is an EA game, I feel I need to address the microtransactions as well. They're there, they're an obvious cashgrab, and you will feel a pull to buy them. Earning coin (the in-game currency), takes way too long. For instance, purchasing a skin for your javelin (mech) without spending real money will cost you 60000 coin, which is the equivalent to saving all the coin you earn from first playing the game until reaching the endgame. Meanwhile, the skins cost $6 with real money, which seems a bit steep.

As you can see, the cons are more numerous and more detailed than the pros. You may be wondering, why not rate it lower, then? My reasoning is that many of these issues can be fixed, and that Anthem still has the potential to be a great game. At the moment, however, I do not recommend to purchase it. Wait until a sale or until the most jarring issues have been fixed, as well as more content added.

All in all, the game is mediocre. It's not terrible, but far from amazing. At present, you're better off playing something else.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
