Agents of Mayhem stands mightily on its own. This is not just an open-world Overwatch. This is not just Saints Row with superheroes. This is a masterpiece that’s been waiting for 30 years to bust out from the collection of talent at Volition. For a number of reasons, it demands a place among the best of the best.

Volition takes what had worked on Saint's Row and adds some of the best things that have popularized games like Overwatch. For example, twelve characters that represent the variety the secondary missions don't have, and a story mode that isn't the most important in a game that just wants to entertain you.. and it absolutely does.

Despite its few missteps in repetition and a few bland design choices that stand out amidst a wash of personality, there’s no denying just how much fun this game is.

It's as ridiculously over the top as the last Saints Row, and definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to gameplay and variety. The problems stem from the limitation of the classic open world structure and some technical issues (mostly some irritating bugs).

If you’re looking for something to keep you busy and entertained, Agents of Mayhem brings it in spades. However, if you get bored of doing the same things over and over again, you might not get what you want from it.

Hero shooter for solo players. Despite gameplay flaws it convinces with a diverse heroic war, great campaign and plenty of self-irony.

Even with its issues, Agents of Mayhem is still a fun experience that anyone who is a fan of hero shooters or the previous Saints Row titles will be able to enjoy. Shooting hoards of Legion scum won't get old any time soon.

Everything about Agents of Mayhem screams underdeveloped and underfinanced. Nevertheless, blunt humor and straightforward action work well enough to qualify as a guilty pleasure, just like that junk food you like: you know it’s unrefined and unhealthy, but you just can’t help it. It may not consistently live up to the standards of Volition's recent pedigree, but Agents of Mayhem's cackling supervillains, destructive vigilantism and satisfying combat make for a jolly good open-world adventure nonetheless.

A broad and goofy arsenal of unique weapons and gadgets and the ability to switch characters on the fly to access complementary abilities offers some solid combat and good mindless fun, but due to some unpolished writing and repetitive environments and enemy types, it doesn't fully live up to its heroic potential.

Agents of mayhem is a game that can appeal to gamers fan of shooters and open-world games, but the uninspired design choices and the repetitive gameplay turn it into a moderate-rewarding game, ideal for discount periods.

It's not an amazing game. It's not particularly innovative. I'd hazard that Saints Row IV is a better game overall. But I enjoyed this attempt by Volition to punch a new hole into its dance card. The studio wanted to try something a bit new and while Agents of Mayhem doesn't quite stick the landing, there's still a lot here to enjoy.

It takes about 20-25 hours to finish the campaign, but you will get tired of it halfway through. A cooperative mode a la Saints Row could’ve livened up these copy/pasted, repetitive missions, but it’s nowhere to be seen.

Serves up a generous range of play styles, but it’s hampered by repetitive levels and a few uninspired design choices.

Great overall story with rich character customization, well known Saints Row humor and beautiful and nostalgic animations from 80s morning cartoons. It’s hard to look at the positives, among all of the technical problems, and very dull and unvaried open-world and repetitive combat mechanics. Agents of Mayhem comes without any kind of online multiplayer mode, and that’s what makes this game undeserving of its 60$ price tag.

Volition played it much too safe with this Saints Row spin-off, making a game that trails behind Saints Row IV in every aspect. [11/2017, p.42]

Unfinished and unpolished, like a poor facsimile of what came before rather than a new game. [Issue#266, p.51]

The main problem with Agents of Mayhem is that the game is too repetitive. It can be fun, but in the end, it's just boring.

Overall, Agents of Mayhem is incredible fun, but having played Volition’s other games, this title seems to be lacking a certain panache that their others games had in spades. The potty humour is there, and is funny in places, but it’s far removed from the hilarious stuff seen in Saints Row. Even the weapons leave much to be desired after experiencing the insane arsenal seen in Saints Row. There are some unique play styles and weapons included, but these feel a little too PG13 for an 18-rated game.

Sadly, the same repetitiveness affects the enemy types as well. Legion has only one set of soldiers, and due to a miscommunication during Kingpin’s intro mission, I killed at least one of each less than two hours into the game. 20 hours later, my time with Agents of Mayhem was fine. I enjoyed the mix of agents, especially their personal missions, but felt beaten down by the repetitive missions. The boss encounters were enjoyable, but the slog through the hordes of minions to get there was not. Were it not for the overwhelming need to finish, I probably could have written this review 10 hours in and never looked back. Agents of Mayhem is fine. It is. But that’s all it is.

It is not felled by any one thing, but is rather undone by a thousand little cuts. Agents of Mayhem heaps theoretical fun on you. Characters, powers, upgrades, tons of missions — it’s desperate to for the player to just have fun. It’s a noble impulse, but one that it’s depressingly incapable of consistently delivering on.

It’s one of those ‘good game buried in here somewhere’ experiences. Tonally it’s all over the place, and its design may as well be from the dark ages at this point. But there’s an alternate universe in which the likeable, upgradeable Agents and gratifying gear-gating are instead married to interesting, varied missions and an atmospheric open-world. That is what it would have taken for Agents of Mayhem to shine, and the most bizarre thing about its actual execution is how deliberately Volition seem to have shot for mediocrity. This doesn’t feel like a game hampered by ineptitude, but instead by a misunderstanding - or plain indecision - as to who it’s actually intended for.

  1. Agents Of Mayhem is huge, and so incredibly ambitious, but more often than not, it misses the mark. The lack of combat feedback is a tragedy, and one that is ruinous, but for me it’s the disappointment of the writing that feels like the biggest letdown.

    Agents of Mayhem
    A Sleeper hit
A gents of mayhem is a spin off game from the saints row series
where a group of heroes are assembled with their own hatred for the legion to take them down
The game takes place in south korea and the story is told with animated cutscenes and tons of humor and charm…
This is a bit of a 3rd person version of a hero shooter.. though completely single player
you start out with 3 characters, and once youre set free in the open world youre able to go and recruit the other 9…
The game handles the introductions and unlocking these characters perfectly…
and rightfully so as recruiting them makes up a hefty chunk of this 22 hour long campaign
To unlock a character you have to complete a mission with that character..
each characters mission introduces them, gives them a back story and their reason for wanting to take down legion…
and none of them feel throw away, every single character in this game feels fleshed out, both in their play style and their personality
These missions introduce the characters weapon, their special attacks, and their mayhem attacks..
They force the player not only to dip their toes in the water with each character, it forces them to prove they can succeed with that character as well
And each is balanced in a way that you may love 2 things about them but hate one… or really love one thing but hate the other 2..
This makes picking your favorite 3 so hard…
And keeping in mind you need a variety of characters in your squad for different objectives missions may throw at you..
Once you have your 3 favorite characters , its time to squad up and take the city for your own
A squad consists of any 3 characters
You can take these characters and clean up the town if youd like, taking over outposts so that you can unlock a regions side activites or claim currency terminals to increase you dollar per minute you earn back at your base
these side activities aren’t really too interesting or fun…
I don’t imagine many people will spend their time running around this tiny city doing them..
and other than unlocking schematics for new cars theres not much incentive to do them anyway..
speaking of cars this is how you will traverse unless you choose to jump and dash into the air, but the game makes it easy by letting you call a car instantly with the touch of the d pad
but sadly there is no fast travel here, youll be driving a lot
most of your time will be spent doing main missions and running through lairs or dungeons
These lairs and dungeons are found in story as well as in the global conflict section of the game which is where you send out your unused members to go out and earn xp and scraps for gremlin tech which is basically a consumable attack
These dungeons are where youll earn mods for your equipped characters
The mission structure here though is practically identical throughout all 20 hours..
    heres the crazy thing though..
The game stays fun throughout inspite of this..
Im surprised how much I ultimately enjoyed agents of mayhem…
while the open world is shallow, the level design is extremely repetitive, and a low health indication like a harsh vibration or blood/discoloration on the screen doesn’t exist..
the heroes with their different moves, diolog, and personalities, the different villians that are fun to hate.. the overall writing in this game.. all of it keep this game fresh and fun throughout…
if youre a fan of hero shooters in any way.. don’t miss out on this one
    I give Agents of Mayhem
    an 8/10

The bulletThe characters lacks character and the combat is mediocre. The gun you shot has no punch and enemies feel like ragdolls of 90s. The bullet hits them but it always lacks the thump, the impact, the audio-visual-physical confirmation. Its more like what I felt shooting in GTA-3 15 years ago, rather than what i feel playing any game in 2017.
Weapons can't be changed. Read it again, a saints row like game where you can't change weapon.
The fun part of saints row for me was to try a dozen type of weapons and do insane stuff in the city but they have brought down the level of freedom in the game. There are side missions and upgrades, sure. But to me the whole game felt hollow.

Also turn your characters into queers still won't make them more funnier or "progressive", don't you know that, Volition? On the contrary, it's kinda annoying due to today's social/political atmosphere.
