I liked AER. Flying and exploring as a bird is an interesting mechanic, and the world is visually fun to explore. One tip, use the "F" key to use the lantern at some places. Based on reviews several players, including myself, flew around exploring "lost" for a while because didn't know to use the "F" key as well as the "E" key for interacting sometimes to help advance the story.

AER is a little over 4 hour long game all about exploration
Here you play as a shape shifter that can turn into a bird out to obtain 3 shard pieces to unlock an ancient temple and defeat the void before it takes what’s left of the shattered world you find yourself in…
The gameplay here is very simple and the music is very beautiful...
There is no combat... no hard or frustrating puzzles…
you simply fly uncovering islands, secrets and knowledge and explore these islands and hidden caves and temples on foot
flying feels intuitive and smooth, though I did get stuck in a rock while landing, forcing me to back out to the main menu and lose the island uncovering progress made since my last save.. But this only happened once… the game is otherwise pretty bug free... though im convinced one of the trophies are bugged for discovering an ancient battlefield.. unless I discovered the wrong thing
There are multiple caves hidden on these islands containing spirit animals and tablets to give you more back story…
but where there’s some traditional gameplay is within this games 3 temples…
Each are fairly short to complete, the longest taking me about 20 minutes.. And will have you going through powering switches with your torch and aligning different items to progress, nothing too difficult or frustrating… and you can enter any temple at any time when you feel you need a break from exploring... the pacing of this game is up to you. Again really making this a relaxing enjoyable experience to get lost in…
I wouldn’t necessarily call AER special or a must play game…
But I appreciate the break from life playing this game gave me
I give AER: Memories of Old

For £4, you can play Ubisoft's Ode. For £2, Superflight. At almost the same price point, there's What Remains of Edith Finch, where you can have a more beautiful, more emotional game with a better story. If you want something spiritual, Everything is cheaper than Aer. Rime is more expensive, but it makes more sense to get that than to waste money on this. Expand

Most boring and ugly walking simulator i ever see.
No guys. It's not design. You can't fool me. This is cost savings and nothing more. The animation shows everything, it is done badly. Physics is buggy.
Even blueprints in the unreal can give much more interesting control. The stories are completely uninteresting. In Doom 3, diaries are a thousand times more interesting to read than this

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Simply put, this isn't a game. If it wasnt for the flying part in between "levels" this would be a walking simulator. The graphics look bad, even for cell shading standards, and often I couldnt tell water from solid ground etc. The colour palette is just off. The story is bland, boring, pretentious and after just a few, way too long, textboxes I found myself just clicking through them, which is allready a bad sign in a game that basically is 50% reading a mediocre narrative. There is no challenge in the game whatsoever, the "levels" drag on forever because they are huge for no other reason than stretching the playtime. The puzzles ar laughably easy (think Skyrim or Resident Evil levels of puzzles) and also only seem to have the prupose to stretch the play time. The flying aspect of the game is implemented okay (despite som glitches and bugs) but ultimately pointless because it basically only gets you from A to B with hardly any challenges except lazy "fly through ring puzzles". I got this game for free on Epic and still feel this wasnt worth it. It's literally just a way to waste a few hours but nothing to be enjoyed. All in all this feels like a lazy Zelda rip off by a game design student who handed this in as a class project. Dont get me wrong you COULD build a decent game arround this, adding actual mechanics, a proper story and things to do, but this just isnt there. This game is a two trick pony: pointlessly flying/walking arround and having a lantern. Expand

Beautiful, melancholic "Journey" with an aestetic from "Ashen" with the freedom of a bird in the sky fulfilling our need of exploration with words of wisdom, prayer and hope for the betterment of mankind.
This 3 hour work of art must be experienced to fully understand it's message and meaning.

This game is not so much a puzzle platformer as an exploration game. The story was great. The mechanics were alright, though the flying too some getting used to. The world is pretty barren of land and people to really get invested in why I should care about saving this place. The puzzles could have been a little more interesting.

Atmospheric, original, not particularly challenging, and relatively short if you pay attention to what your character is told. These could be pluses or minuses depending on how you feel about casual games but the abrupt non-ending (with no sequel and the developer has disbanded) is disappointing.

The game basically alternates between two gameplays: the exploration of the open world, where you fly around as a bird; as three dungeons where you solved basic puzzles. I think the devs probably got inspired by Zelda: the Wind Waker as I found quite some similarities with it in this game: the cartoony graphical style of course, but also a large open world made of islands, with the Tower of the Gods right in the middle. The gameplay is limited to the strict minimum: moving and jumping in human form, or flying in bird form.

This game doesn't give in challenge, it is only there for you to enjoy the exploration and the poetry, with a calm, sometimes melancholic atmosphere.

My only disappointment was the endgame. Otherwise a enjoyable experience.

Note for the completists: there is one of the achievements that can't be unlocked if you progress too far into the game so you might as well read at least the description of the achievements, if not a guide, before diving in.

The game is not for everyone the game doesn't give you a clear path to follow and let's you discover things on you own. Personally I like this type of games so I had no problem. The story wasn't something special but not bad either. The only thing that I didn't like was the fact there was not a journal or a book so you can gather the information that you find about the story and world . I found my self confused near the end because there was so much information to keep track . The sound design was really good. Overall Aer: memories of old is a 3 and a half hours game with a bittersweet ending and a story about human greed

These factors led to some frustration and dislike towards the game. However, I soon realized that the key to enjoying this game is to approach it with an exploratory mindset. Once I adopted this approach and went with the flow, my perspective changed entirely, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the journey.

One of the game's standout features is its freedom in gameplay. It doesn't hold your hand and explicitly tell you what to do. Instead, it presents you with tasks to advance the story, but it's up to you to discover and choose when to tackle them. This open-endedness allows you to explore the world at your own pace and immerse yourself fully in the experience. The story is intriguing and unfolds through dialogues and text throughout the game, making it essential not to skip them. By paying attention to these interactions, you'll be able to fully grasp the depth of the narrative and understand what's really going on.

While "AER: Memories of Old" may not be considered a masterpiece by some, I believe it deserves a playthrough for its unique and enjoyable elements. Playing the game with a relaxed mindset, without rushing the experience, is the key to fully appreciating the exploration aspect it offers. In a gaming landscape dominated by fast-paced action and intense challenges, this game serves as a refreshing change of pace, offering a calm and tranquil experience that sets it apart from most other video games out there.

You play as Auk, a shapeshifter to go on a quest to explore the temples of the gods and uncover the truth of what happened all those years ago.

Despite the low poly graphics, they are enjoyable and you get used to them quite fast and together with a beautifully soundtrack you can spend a lot of time just gliding to your hearts content. But the game still lacks a bit by bringing the conclusion a bit abruptly and a major setback might be the price. However, AER finds himself a lot of times on discount so for a 3 to 4 hour game, if you feel like spending a couple of euros/dolars, you will spend a good time.

AER creates a beautiful fantasy world with a wonderful flying mechanic to explore it, but ultimately doesn’t give players much to do besides repetitive platforming puzzles.

AER is a pretty and charming game, but doesn’t have enough of its own original ideas to feel fresh, and it is plagued by a few flaws that prevent it from being a true standout in the genre of artsy indie exploration games. That said, the experience itself is fun and pleasant, even if it isn’t particularly memorable. If you already like these kinds of games, you’ll enjoy AER, but if you don’t, this isn’t what will make you fall in love with them.

Featuring a stunning low-poly art style, a wonderfully well-integrated soundtrack, an ingeniously simple control scheme, an interesting transformation mechanic, and impressively designed temples, AER has a lot going for it. It’s unfortunate that the experience is as short as it is and there is no way to keep track of what’s been seen. A few more environmental puzzles and a simple journal would fix my only complaints about this exploration-heavy title.
