So I've had the game for a few weeks now and I love it. It's something between Minecraft & State of Decay or DayZ. The crafting is becoming better with every update. World generation is not added but planned.

The first thing everyone notices about this game is the price. But what is early access?

Early Access is commonly accepted to mean you are paying the developers and funding the game development. You are not "buying" the game but rather helping to further the development and help pay bills.

So is the price something that should cause you to forget this game?

Answer: Yes & No. It depends how you think about Early Access. With the description above, I see no room for complaints, you are supporting development with your wallet. As a reward you get the game free when it is released. Since you also get the game early, as in right away, you also can help bug test and report issues to the developers.

So yes, the money is a high price to pay. Was it worth it? Yes. I would buy a second, third or fourth copy if I had friends/family interested in playing.

Will this be the next Minecraft craze? It could be, but the price holds it back, the multiplayer in general is a disaster unless you play with friends only.

Multiplayer is what Minecraft multiplayer would have been if there were not plugins.

Now, the building in this game can be hard, it is what I had always hoped for in other crafting/building games. The blocks all have physics, which means buildings can fall and crush your face. But as in real life, if you provide the proper supports you wont have a problem.

The mining in this game leaves much to desire, it's rather slow, and is based on Stamina & Tool damage points, which drain from every hit. Water refills stamina but your tools will require repairing or replacing.

The good point with mining though, there are not caves to search, you just start digging down and you will start finding ores. Which is great, it's not realistic in anyway but is a improvement over Minecraft's mining in a lot of ways, (which was not realistic either.)

Overall you have both Multiplayer and Single-player and both are great in there own ways.

You have many options when starting a game and they can be changed at anytime before starting one of your saves.

If you don't want to play with giant wasps and hordes of zombies tearing through your walls ready to eat you, you don't have too.

Play in a war torn landscape as the soul survival or join MP and find other survivors and rebuild civilization.

Build a giant bunker underground or a giant castle. Build a wall with many traps and defenses surrounding a small town and build a community. It's all up to you and as any role-playing game with unlimited replay-ability it is up to you to find the fun. It's yours for the taking.

I for one hope to see you soon.

    Cheers,
    Tobias

Hostiles teleport from lag (While playing offline D:) and zombie dogs begin to flying around you in a dizzying orbit when they reach you and become unkillable. The crafting system is wonky, putting in a design MIGHT cause the game to recognize it. Put it in many times, and it might only work once. And the building mechanic makes no sense.

It's painful to see a game with so much potential and promise fail on this scale, leaving you feeling robbed and cheated.

The landscape map is different and divided into areas, from the green forest to the ugly blown out nuclear wastes. The zombies are a very aggravating set up. They are very slow in the day, but at night they become the dumb super zombie that runs and destroys. It's a game that each update takes one step forward but three steps back. Now we have flying zombies, dogs, giant bees, fat zombies that have been ripped off time and time again since the Killing Floor mod that vomit. I would recommend not touching this with a 10 foot pole but I would however recommend following its status and looking at gameplay videos. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. as this game is still (over 4 years now?) in early access on steam, and that is where I purchased the game years ago. the final release might change as the console ports they worked on and finished (?) were poorly received, that does not bode well for this version on PC. Upon release this review may change to reflect it.

I have played this game since its early days. I am a big fan of survival/zombie/horror type games, especially the ones where you can work together with others to build a mutual defense, or wage a precarious war between tribes as you worry about expending too many resources to defend from the next zombie attack.

7 Days to die brings the elements of building a base with defenses and traps, crafting, and survival sandbox together. And in earlier builds of the game this was supreme. The game was as fun as it was compelling that you had to defend against monsters. The zombies are grotesque and you view a charred wasteland, with the destroyed terrain and homes telling a story all their own. loot-able containers re-spawn - should you be brave enough to venture out and capture the loot again. Each in game day that passes brings more danger and increased difficulty. Every 7th day you are hit with a huge wave of zombies which are sent by the game in your general direction.

The player gets hit with the dilemma... do i fight? do i hide? how do i escape? And how people choose to get around those dilemmas is interesting to see. And honestly, the game was running so smoothly 3 years ago that I was expecting it to launch. I guess 'don't fix what isn't broken' didn't apply to this developer.

Unfortunately, a lot of the more fun elements that were previously included have since been removed from the game. And negative elements, the most frustrating to me being an unblockable blanket zombie stun chance, despite armor or other countermeasures, have been added.

There are bugs in the game now, which never existed in the first builds I played; also graphical glitches that never used to exist. performance-wise the game seems to choke on its own data clusters, and struggles to load itself properly, various zombie and zombie dog animations and AI pathing errors have not been dealt with despite them existing since day one.. I could go on for an hour about how their early alpha versions were nearly perfect, and if they had added their crafting quality expansions on top of the previous builds I would have voted this game a 10/10.

Instead, the game took a horrible turn. I have seen other developers do the same. The game starts out awesome, but before release it just drops off the edge from 'outstanding' to 'mediocre'.

There's fun to be had here. But bear in mind I have had this game for longer than most of you, and found it more fun, more stable, and more smooth years ago!! it was ready for launch, not joking. Multiplayer servers were amazing with no crashes and disconnects, and very smooth game play.

I feel that a player needs to respect themselves a bit more, and not settle for a second rate zombie game that now feels dated, and less fun than it was before, for almost three times (nearly four!) the cost that I paid for it! I can't recommend it - the developer had something so amazing early on that, compared to now? It just doesn't compare.

I really, really liked this game, and I feel unhappy that future players won't get to play that masterpiece I played, and are now being charged triple for a lesser experience. It's just unbelievable.

I can't even sit on the awesome couches in my zombie-proof pad. That would really be an excellent reward - being able to interact 100% more with the world. Let me sit on my furniture, stream videos through my TV, actually SLEEP in my bed (does anyone else feel like this is 7 Days of Insomnia?). My character NEVER sleeps and that starts to mess with my non-virtual head after a while. :) Let me climb those trees and towers. Let them fall to the ground like actually trees and towers instead of bouncy Minecraft objects. Let me demolish whole building with TNT, and give me more of those buildings (bigger and with more variety) - exploring the city is one of the best and nerve-wrackingest aspects of the game. Give me more, less predictable, things to find there. Give me multiple spawn point options (bed or sleeping bag). I could go on (additional bag space?), but there are thousands of possibilities that would further separate this from Minecraft, bring it further into an RPG and still be more about building, crafting and exploring. This game has tons of potential and I fully expect to be back to increase my score as new Alpha releases come out. Expand

    Lot’s of zombies.
Mary ways you can build your character to be what you want them to be in this apocalyptic type game.
Because fun pimps made this game in such a way that people could make mods (free) for it, I do not think this game will ever die because there is a large community of people that make create their own version with special features some can even change the game so much that it feels like your not even playing 7 days to die.

As for Young Kids: This game has a lot of jump scare for new players. We have even seen some more advanced players scream like little girls at times.

12 and Under I would say a hard no.
13+ I would say if dad or mom played with them.

That being said. I love this game.

The developers are now more focused on body odor and bathing mechanics, and making sure the female characters look sexy in their g-string underwear when they're "disrobed". Seriously?!? They'd rather offend half the gaming community instead of adding real stuff to do? I don't care if they make their models totally nude, but the way they are oversexualizing the female models (nurse, cheerleader, "lady", and now the main avatars) is disturbing and doesn't fit the game at all.

They're maybe taking the "Pimps" part of their name too seriously...

I'd give this game a 2/10, because there is some fun gameplay for a few hours. Catch it on a bundle or deep sale, but don't expect much. Space Engineers is way more bang for your sandbox survival buck.

Having played several survival horror games such as DAYZ, dead island, Left4Dead and alike, I can say that 7DTD has great potential, but in its current form, it simply isn’t there.

This is meant to be a multiplayer survival zombie-horror game set in a post-apocalyptic world the environment of which is for the most part, entirely destructible. My criticisms are derived from this marketing and description of this game.

    Negative

As you walk around this empty world, you see massive castles that are indestructible, lavish houses and gardens that are all well stocked with munitions, supplies and raw materials absent zombies. It would seem that this environment is thriving! Far from the premise of a desperate zombie infested post-apocalyptic world. The fact that such fine establishments are actually standing is a testament to the false advertising of this title. You might say, well Odin, this is early access, nothing is perfect. This may be right, however, I’ve researched previous versions and I can tell you, the devs have deliberately opted for this game design choice. This can be demonstrated in contrast to previous versions of 7DTD as the environments were far more destructible and inundated with zombies, this added to the intensity of the integral premise of the game’s theme. Now they’ve released what is known as a land claim protection system which essentially involves a key stone offering a radius of significant protection to your own creations (I noted this can be switched off at the server side, but good luck finding a reliable one who does with decent ping and player base. And good luck to you if you create your own server with zero players). As you can see, the changes to the game’s theme are here to stay and likely to evolve in the form of more complex crafting and building systems.

The present version of this release suffers from an absence of players, I note based on server availability a capacity of players no higher than 50 yet only being populated with 1 player. I’m told some servers offer capacity of 128 however this has not shown up in server availability. Games like these necessitate a large player base to intensify the environment; this is something that DAYZ does very well. Unfortunately, it seems the highest number of players I’ve seen so far have been around 20 most of which are kiddie gamers obsessed with building Minecraft like creations and servers catering to this type of play by placing even more stringent restrictions on zombies by limiting their numbers to 60 or less in the entire world.

    Positive

7DTD has an excellent control system, far better than the likes of DAYZ. Moving around and running through the environment feels tight and very smooth.

The engine whilst perhaps not as pretty as others is very stable and well suited to this genre something that DAYZ after all their development work have failed to achieve. I note as 7DTD progresses, the visuals are getting better and better.

    Overall

7DTD fails to align with its description as a multiplayer survival zombie-horror game set in a post-apocalyptic world with destructive environments. It is perhaps an advanced Minecraft clone masquerading as something more whilst trying to appeal to the widest audience as possible. As long as you understand this feel free to buy in, I was not privy to this information and had I known, I would have strongly reconsidered a purchase.

As time goes on, the updates take longer and longer to come out. Even after NINE MONTHS the content that is released is, without fail, broken and glitchy.

The scary part is how blindly people support such shabby work. This quality work would not be acceptable in any other scenario. If a doctor botched every procedure he performed or a contractor built a house but left massive holes in the roof and an uneven foundation, they would be out of work in a week. Some how early access (ea) has become the end-all excuse for developers to simply be bad at their jobs. Granted, this is not the case for all games being developed in ea, but the common excuses used for this game's sub-par content, such as, "it's a small team" have been over used. After selling well over a million copies of this game, perhaps the devs need to consider bringing in some actual skill to their team before they drop the ball completely.

Now in the current version you cant work with many of the materials that you could before and they have implemented a new skill system that is cumbersome and utterly confusing. Oh just another note the current version is bugged and causes your character to die of heat exhaustion, and they still haven't fixed the Minibike problems. In summation it seems that Fun Pimps are more interested in adding superfluous content, removing the versatility of the variety of building materials then fixing bugs that they have had since more then 5 major revisions ago. I would not recommend this game . Not so much because of the game its self but because the developers and their lack of direction and poor choices of designing a game that was completely versatile and interesting and then taking it in completely the wrong direction, not to mention their lack of attention to the little detail of fixing whats broken before adding more broken content. It's definitely not worth $35 right now, and probably not ever. It is extremely interesting and the multiplayer aspect is entertaining, but a fair price is far from the wallet-sucker it is now.

After whopping 10 years spent in Steam’s Early Access, 7 Days to Die still feels unfinished, which makes it quite difficult to evaluate. My reason tells me to tear this game apart for tons of bugs and pretty much non-existent optimization, but my heart wants to give it a high rating. After all, I spent over a hundred hours in it and had fun for most of that time.

7 Days to Die, in my opinion, is dated in a lot of ways. Some of the mechanics feel unnecessarily tedious, the game doesn’t look incredible, and the engine is undoubtedly on its last legs. In other ways, however, the game is revolutionary, featuring a core mechanic loop that I am shocked no other games have replicated and a surprising amount of player freedom in its gameplay. If nothing else, 7 Days to Die will quickly become the next Stardew Valley or Rogue, inspiring a variety of new games and becoming the forefather of its own genre.
