While the core gameplay of 20XX starts out pretty fun, it grows dull fast. Game balance can be a bit tiresome, and level design can quickly get dull. I do have to praise the music and general controls for being brilliant, and it can be fun for at least a little while, but this is a game I'm not gonna remember much. Full Review »

This game is an obvious homage to the Mega Man X series, and I think it does an excellent job of incorporating what I love about those gamesThis game is an obvious homage to the Mega Man X series, and I think it does an excellent job of incorporating what I love about those games but as a roguelike. I've got over 800 hours into this game, and while I don't play it every day, I play it often. It seems like the right mix of novelty and familiarity, following the Mega Man X formula better than even some of the core Mega Man X games. As long as you enjoy Mega Man X-style gameplay and procedurally generated Stages (roguelikes), then you should give this game a try. While definitely not a perfect game, there's a lot here that it does well and what it doesn't do well is still "adequate".

Here are some aspects where it blows away most of the Mega Man X games:

    1) Each "boss" at the end of the first eight Stages rewards you with a Special Weapon, BUT there are two ALTERNATE rewards you can claim if you don't want that Weapon.

    2) Each boss weapon has bonus properties that give it a secondary use. Some make it easier to navigate the Stage. Others can counter Stage hazards. Still others are HARD counters to certain, otherwise pesky Stage enemies.

    3) There are four sets of Core Augments that are the equivalent to the "Armors" X can gain in the Mega Man X series. They're not all winners, you can fail to "earn" them, and they rarely - if ever - all show up in a single run. You may also only equip a single piece for a specific area (head, torso, arms, legs) at a time. The good news is that each pieces provides its own bonuses, and if you assemble a full set there's a bonus effect for that as well. You're free to mix-and-match as well; you won't get the set's bonus (under normal circumstances), but you'll still gain the abilities belonging to each specific piece.

    4) Four playable characters. Now, the bad news is that on Steam, you'll have to purchase two of them as DLC (Hawk and Draco). I found them to be a nice change of pace, though, and in face Draco is my favorite character to use in this game, so I believe they're worth it (especially if you snag them on sale).

if you view the Mega Man X series as a whole, the best of it is better than what you'll get in 20XX. Conversely, the worst bits of 20XX are better than the worst bits of the Mega Man X series. Overall, I strongly recommend this game.
