By being overly faithful to the source material, this Star Fox remake misses the mark. Nintendo has revived a dated genre without injecting any meaningful gameplay modernization or worthwhile additional content. It is essentially the 1997 game ported to 2026, complete with all its structural flaws—starting with a pitifully short runtime and archaic AI. Up against modern competition and the current trend of remakes that successfully reinvent old formulas, Star Fox falls short... and leaves me worried about the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 later this year. Here’s hoping more effort goes into that one.

I'd have loved more levels here, new worlds, more Star Fox. Would that have been too much to ask? I guess so. It's a shame that Star Fox isn't a real sequel, but I'd love to think that, perhaps, that could still come depending on how well this one does.

Star Fox is another good excuse to revisit one of Nintendo’s best games, but it doesn’t meaningfully build on it. Fox McCloud is left in the same stasis he’s been in for decades now: surviving the Lylat Wars to show that he can walk in his father’s footsteps. I get it. How many more times will he have to prove he’s his own fox before he’s allowed to fight his own battles? Give his future cubs a war story that’s worth feeling insecure about.

Star Fox is illustrative of both the good and bad of this trend. In many ways, the visual overhaul benefits the experience, making it feel even more like a sci-fi movie you can play. But it also shows how awkward it can be when old-school gameplay meets modern graphics. In this case, the balance mostly works out in Star Fox’s favor. But it also has me more curious than ever to see how Nintendo remakes one of the most iconic and influential Zelda games.
