It’s feels intuitive and looks amazingly smooth on-screen as you button bash and combine skills to take down armies of starships. A great addition to the Switch 2 library and a must-buy for gamers.

Star Fox is the blueprint for how Nintendo need to do remakes going forward. This is Star Fox for those who’ve been there from the start, and those starting here for the first time. Star Fox 64 is iconic, but this is now the definitive way to experience it.

Part of what I find so impressive about Star Fox 2026 is how unafraid it is to rethink how we experience these classic levels. There is a deep understanding of lore that goes far beyond Star Fox 64. In addition to hopefully opening the way for sequels of its own, there is also an awareness of where these characters need to go in existing canon. It all comes off as remarkably respectful to not just Star Fox 64, but the entire series. And underneath that is arguably the best version of the campaign that made Star Fox 64 the legend it is. It has been expanded with unlockable challenges in addition to the unlockable expert difficulty from the original. My hope is that the multiplayer is able to maintain a reasonable crowd post-launch, and that perhaps content is added to flesh out what is a very promising mode. While I’ve been down this road before, Star Fox 2026 is the most confident I’ve ever felt that we may move past the realm of remasters, remakes, and reimaginings and into the wonderful world of sequels, built on this excellent foundation.

Star Fox is without a doubt the best version of Star Fox 64. Long time fans are sure to love its smart inclusions from both a narrative and gameplay perspective, while newcomers will get to experience one of Nintendo's most important games on hardware that truly brings it to life. It's another massive win for the Switch 2, and I hope it paves the way for a new Star Fox title some day in the future.

Star Fox returns after 10 years with a remake that respects everything that made Star Fox 64 special. The game adds new story scenes, more character development, and great graphics. The gameplay feels familiar, smooth, and fun, making every trip through the Lylat System exciting. Some classic moments are missing and the co-op mode is limited, but this is a great tribute to a beloved Nintendo adventure and a strong return for the franchise.

Star Fox 64 is an all-timer, a top ten classic that still holds up. So a remake has a pretty strong base to start with. In that sense, they hardly needed to change anything. But then, why make the game at all? I loved this game, but I also loved it back in the 90s. The new challenge mode is a welcome addition, the multiplayer is delightful, and the aesthetic has gotten a serious overhaul. But the gameplay is largely unchanged. It’s still a breezy two-hour ride to the credits once you get the hang of things. All your stored up muscle memory will graft onto this new version with zero friction. If this is your first time playing any version of Star Fox 64, this is an absolute non-optional Switch 2 purchase. Returning fans will have a great time, but be warned: this is fun but familiar territory.

Where Star Fox stamps its value is in the new part of the game. The multiplayer is exceptional and will have some real lasting power, especially given that space dogfighting games with multiplayer modes are almost shockingly uncommon. With any luck, this release is an example of Nintendo testing the waters for what’s next, and we get even more Star Fox with even more of this multiplayer in the years ahead.

Star Fox (2026) flawlessly bridges the gap between retro arcade perfection and modern technical brilliance. It honors the series' roots while utilizing new hardware features to deliver the definitive sci-fi shooter experience on the platform.

It may be another trip back to the Lylat System, but Star Fox is a highly entertaining arcade adventure with arguably the best visuals seen from a Nintendo title yet, a more fleshed-out narrative and gameplay that truly stands the test of time. At seven campaign playthroughs and counting, as well as countless attempts at the game’s many challenges, Star Fox well and truly has its claws in me. Sure, my familiarity with the original game is light at best, but remake or not, Star Fox is a great way to kick off the summer and hopefully a sign of more adventures from Fox and crew in the near future.

Whether you are a veteran Arwing pilot or a complete newcomer finally ready to tackle Andross, this 2026 revival is an absolute must-play. Beautifully honouring its arcade roots while proving that some formulas truly are timeless, Team Star Fox is just as vital today as they were over three decades ago.

Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 is a faithful reboot that modernizes the classic formula with gorgeous presentation and excellent voice acting. It plays things a little too safe at times, but the added challenges and polished gameplay make this the best Star Fox yet. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the Lylat System, this is an easy recommendation, especially at its reasonable price point.

On the Switch 2, Star Fox is giving me exactly what I ask for in a modern remake, and therefore shows Nintendo what will be required from The Legend Zelda: Ocarina of Time in a few months. Modern, spectacular graphics, yes, but also a careful tweak of the original gameplay, an interesting expansion of the narrative, a respectful update of the beloved characters boosting rather than ruining their personality, and a generous bunch of playable extras. You've done your father proud, Velan Studios.

A faithful remake that pays tribute to a timeless classic without taking creative liberties, serving as proof that arcade-style design can still thrive in the modern AAA landscape. Recommended to longtime fans who still cherish their N64 cartridge, as well as anyone who enjoyed the original and wouldn't mind a modern visual overhaul. Let's just hope we won't have to revisit Lylat once again a few decades from now on Switch 4.

Star Fox on Switch 2 is a sublime remaster of Star Fox 64, and that's both its best and worst feature. This is Fox's best game made even better, with a stunning visual overhaul, snappy controls, and some neat reasons to keep playing thanks to the new challenges and online modes. That said, it is just '64' again, and those who have already played through the '97 classic hundreds of times won't find any surprises here…If, however, this is your first run-in with Fox McCloud, I struggle to think of a better introduction to the series. And if you know the game like the back of your hand, you're in for a replay unlike any other. The series' future looked bleak for a second there, but if this is a taste of what the next original adventure holds, then I've never been more ready to fire up the G-Diffuser.

Star Fox returns with a solid and nostalgic reimagining of its Nintendo 64 classic. Although Nintendo chooses a safe approach rather than delivering a completely new installment, the result succeeds thanks to its revamped controls, multiplayer modes, strong replay value, and polished presentation. It does not reinvent the franchise, but it clearly demonstrates that Fox McCloud still has plenty of untapped potential.

Star Fox returns with a remake of a game that was already excellent, adding new content while keeping its core gameplay intact. It is a reimagining that deserves to move beyond the memes spawned by the new character models and be recognized as an exercise in preservation that many other companies should emulate.

Velan Studios has crafted a remake that is respectful yet bold, successfully enhancing one of Nintendo’s most significant titles without compromising its core identity. Its updated visuals, flawless fluidity, additional modes, and a multiplayer component that finally measures up make this the best version of the classic *Star Fox 64* to date. Yet, it remains a product of the 1990s arcade philosophy: short to complete, demanding to master, and built around the deliberate repetition of missions in pursuit of a perfect run. Those looking for a one-off adventure might fail to see its appeal, but players who value games that reward study, dedication, and constant improvement will find a timeless classic that still holds its own.

Given the reduced price, the nostalgia factor, and the curiosity of those who only just discovered Fox McCloud via the Super Mario Galaxy movie, the new Star Fox should be a hit, though I feel it doesn't quite reach its full potential. I believe that long-time fans of the franchise — those looking to relive Star Fox 64 with the best presentation the series has ever seen — will really enjoy this version.

The Star Fox remake plays it safe with its seatbelt fastened, which is a shame, as this was an ideal opportunity to include significant new features. But what we have is what we got, and what we got... is still a tremendous game that now looks, sounds, plays, and is more enjoyable than ever.

Star Fox remains one of the finest on-rail shooters ever made, and this remake proves its gameplay formula is still as engaging today as it was in 1997. Enhanced visuals, new mission objectives, and enjoyable multiplayer additions help modernize the experience, while its branching paths and replay value remain as compelling as ever. Although the weaker voice acting and short campaign may disappoint some players, this is a faithful and worthwhile revival of a Nintendo classic that shows Star Fox still has plenty of life left in it.

Though safe and familiar, Star Fox is now the definitive way to play the game seen by many as the peak of its genre, and the changes it does make are all for the better. The new cutscenes, though brief, further ground Fox and the squad in the world they live in, while the spotless visuals, charming character designs, and excellent new voice cast are inviting to both longtime fans and curious newcomers. Between its classic campaign, addictive multiplayer, and assortment of extra features, Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 is a triumphant return and fresh start for the series that proudly says that its best days are yet to come.

Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 is a very solid game whose main goal is clearly to bring the classic title up to modern standards. Its gameplay has barely aged at all, and its stunning visuals are unlike anything we've seen on the console so far.

Star Fox successfully modernizes Nintendo's classic rail shooter formula without losing what made it special in the first place. Fast-paced combat, excellent replay value, strong presentation, and a surprisingly fun multiplayer mode make it one of the series' strongest entries. While the campaign could be longer and longtime fans may find the core experience very familiar, it's a confident and highly entertaining return for Fox McCloud and his team.

Star Fox’s combination of tried-and-true N64 mission design, stunning new visuals, and technical polish results in a game that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly fresh, exciting, and fun here in 2026. Yes, perhaps more fully original content could have been added to the package, but this new Star Fox did a surprisingly adept job of barrel rolling past my concerns and should satisfy veteran and newcomer wingmen alike.

This refreshed version of Star Fox proves the series is still timeless, even without a lot of extra's. The polished Arwings, crew, and environments look great, while co-op makes the campaign more fun. Multiplayer is a nice distraction from the story, but could have offered a bit more depth.

Star Fox is an absolutely packed shooter that really shines with its stellar gameplay and top-notch visuals. Whether you're playing through the campaign for the dozenth time or partaking in just a few more online battles, you're bound to have oodles of fun.

Nintendo’s transmedia ambition isn't lost on us: this Star Fox targets fans and genre enthusiasts, but also those who first met the space fox in Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie. However, it has the potential to win over new fans to the shoot-'em-up genre. Those willing to master the Arwing and the Lylat System will find a game here offering dozens of hours of play and a tremendously satisfying experience. It is one of those games that leaves you feeling truly fulfilled as you learn and internalize its mechanics. Whether this premise will capture the attention of the 2026 audience, however, remains to be seen.

This Switch 2 remake is a joyful, updated reminder of why the 1997 game is, in fact, very good and fun, but it also casts a spotlight on the fact that we are long overdue for something – frankly, anything – new from Star Fox and team.

A classic title is somehow better than ever before. Star Fox (2026) looks and plays better than it ever has. It’s still brief, but it’s brilliant.

Even though we’re retreading familiar territory here, Star Fox on the Switch 2 is a welcome retelling of a remake of an SNES classic. It’s basically a gorgeous cinematic facelift for a thirty-year-old game you’ve likely beaten four times already on different consoles. Fortunately, that means it is still insanely fun to barrel roll through space with your crew. The flip side, of course, is that the campaign is still short, even if you go back to chase down high scores and medals. I am just happy, though, to see Fox McCloud back in the cockpit of his own franchise instead of just taking up a slot on the Smash Bros. roster.
  37. Jun 24, 2026
    82
Star Fox delivers fast-paced action and replayable missions that make the most of its short campaign. A strong remake, but one that still feels rooted in the past rather than pushing the series forward.
  38. Jun 24, 2026
    81
Star Fox on Switch 2 is a technically spectacular remake that doesn't aim beyond updating the Super Nintendo classic. The dubbed cinematics and HDR usage shine, but the formula remains unchanged since the nineties and the game is far too short for its price. A beautiful homage that makes one thing clear: Fox McCloud deserves a brand-new adventure.
  39. Jun 25, 2026
    80
Star Fox is an unapologetically arcade-style experience, remaining completely faithful to Star Fox 64, perhaps even to a fault. The Nintendo 64 classic has been beautifully modernized with impressive visuals and fluid animations, complemented by excellent controls and strong replay value. That said, in an era where remakes often expand upon their source material, it's fair to expect the developers to go a step further by adding new content or fresh surprises.
  40. Jun 24, 2026
    80
As a longtime fan of the game and larger series, this remake delivered in all of the right ways. And for those who haven’t played a Star Fox game before, the Switch 2 iteration is now the best jumping on point. While Star Fox 64 almost certainly didn’t need to be remade or improved further, I’m more than happy that Nintendo opted to return to it once again.
  41. Jun 24, 2026

Star Fox does succeed in being a solid remake of Star Fox 64, on most accounts. This is the prettiest the Lylat System has ever looked and even the oddly realistic character designs started to grow on me after a couple of missions. Gameplay-wise, it’s just Star Fox 64, which is fine in my opinion because how can you improve upon perfection? Mouse Mode on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a literal game-changer though and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it for your first playthrough. The game falls short in its characterisation and performances. The story is only narrowly expanded compared to the original and what you get isn’t all that impactful. What I really want to see from the next game is something new.
  42. Jun 24, 2026
    80
You might argue that this game didn’t need to be revived yet again, especially since the entire series has basically revolved around Nintendo tweaking and remaking the same game over and over again for decades. But having played and fallen in love with it, I’m confident in saying this is exactly what Star Fox needed and the definitive way to experience an all-time classic.
  43. Jun 24, 2026
    80
The story itself, despite being bulked out with cut scenes and extra voice work, does still feel a bit thin to be honest. And once you’ve watched one scene of light bickering between missions, you’ve kind of seen them all. It starts to feel like skippable stuff, which isn’t what you want new content to feel like.
  44. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Star Fox soars on the Nintendo Switch 2, with the remake's complementary scope uplifting one of Nintendo's greatest action games. Improved visuals and added cutscenes make the Lylat System feel far fuller, and with the game's on-rails action proving timeless, this is now the definitive way to play Star Fox 64.
  45. Jun 24, 2026
    80
The Switch 2 version of Star Fox feels designed to both be comfortable and offer a means to get people playing together. The standard and mouse control schemes both work well and are immediately accessible, which is a point in its favor over Star Fox Zero. The Campaign feels like there’s a bit more of a focus on showing the crew between missions, which allows for more characterization. The multiplayer options are pretty robust, and I’d love to see more maps for the Battle mode. This does feel like a robust take on the story, and I’d love to see the series move on to an entirely new title after this.

    80
Star Fox is a very faithful remake of Star Fox 64, with added depth and complexity for how you tackle the branched mission structure. It also looks wonderful throughout, and the lifelike character renditions hit me right in the childhood. So if, like me, you grew up with these games, you will absolutely love this remake. Although I feel newer players may find it functionally a tad old school.
  47. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Star Fox is a Switch 2 remake that understands exactly what made the Nintendo 64 original the defining game in the series. It remains faithful to the strength of its original design in a way only Nintendo could pull off. That includes the short runtime that made Star Fox 64 the ideal weekend rental. For those willing to embrace replayability and short bursts of family-friendly fun, Star Fox remains one of Nintendo’s most distinctive and rewarding early 3D games, reborn for a new generation of players to take their own path.

I’m not saying that this is going to replace the Overwatches or Splatoons of the world when it comes to team-based games, but it’s certainly more fun than I expected from multiplayer Star Fox.
  49. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Star Fox 2026 is a game straight out of 1997, with all the personality and simplicity that entails. It’s a game you can finish in an afternoon, but the gameplay is fun and unique enough to make every hour worthwhile.

    80
Nintendo's arcade shooter remains a classic, and its Switch 2 version adds stunning visuals, a fantastic orchestral soundtrack, and brilliant cinematic touches that elevate the experience. While I'd have liked a little more care put into restoring its smaller parts, the Switch 2 remake is otherwise a fantastic way to discover or revisit a classic.
  51. Jun 24, 2026
    80
The new Star Fox offers a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic that is excellent in every respect, from graphics to gameplay, and has been tweaked just enough to preserve the original’s arcade spirit. The addition of online multiplayer mode and the new CGI cutscenes are also excellent.
  52. Jun 24, 2026
    80
A remake that will satisfy veteran pilots and surprise those who have never stepped foot in an Arwing before. More complete than ever for solo play or co-op, the battle mode has been pushed to the background, but it still has some good ideas.
  53. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Star Fox is a carbon copy of Star Fox 64. The structure and pacing are identical. While the Switch 2's controls offer a clear improvement over the N64, the overall feel of the game is the same. Although the additional challenges attempt to extend your playtime, you're still revisiting the same levels with challenges that, in some cases, feel quite arbitrary. It's not a bad experience, but this is the result of the original work. Velan Studios doesn't fix any problems; they simply present us with what we all already knew was excellent.
  54. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Star Fox is exactly the comeback I was hoping to have in my hands. Nintendo didn’t try to turn the series into something it was never meant to be. Instead, it chose to celebrate its identity, enriching it with modern production values, a more ambitious narrative, and top-tier audiovisual presentation.
  55. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Rounding out the set of additions is the so-called "Viewer"—a menu that expands over time with new entries and uses on-screen text to provide context for the characters, enemies, and locations encountered in the main campaign and supplementary modes.
  56. Jun 24, 2026
    80
An excellent remake that retains everything that was great about the N64 original and adds just the right amount of quality of life improvement to keep it fun for modern audiences – even if it still leaves the franchise with an uncertain future.
  57. Jun 24, 2026
    80
Despite knowing nearly all Star Fox 64’s shortcuts and secrets for close to 30 years now, this remake’s impressive coat of paint and compelling new cutscenes made me smile like I just did my very first barrel roll. Finding hidden routes to unlock different stages or small optimizations to push my score sky high is still much deeper than it first appears, keeping the brief campaign runs fun across multiple playthroughs. And while the new Challenge mode and revamped multiplayer don’t go quite as far as I’d like in terms of content or creativity, they are still amusing ways to shake things up once you’ve exhausted every alternate route. Given the decade-long drought since the disappointment that was Star Fox Zero in 2016, Nintendo was wise to return to Star Fox’s best game in order to revitalize this 33-year-old series, and has reached a new peak for it in doing so. Hopefully this is just the beginning for Fox McCloud, because Nintendo has proven the Arwing isn’t out of style quite yet.

    80
Despite these criticisms, this is still an excellent Star Fox game. The flight controls are pure perfection, the new cinematics are genuinely great, and the Challenge Mode gives it solid legs. Especially as a budget title, this is absolutely worth picking up. Star Fox is simply a must-play for anyone with a Switch 2. Star Fox is back, and after this reboot, we can only hope that Nintendo finally gives us the true sequel to SF64 we’ve waited years for.

Velan's conservative but accomplished remake goes all-in on spectacle to much success, even if the script could do with some wit.

A lovingly crafted remake of a classic that really deserved a full sequel. Still well worth the money, though, because once this game hooks you, it doesn't let go.

    80
Star Fox for the Switch 2 is yet another Star Fox 64 remake, but it's a gorgeous and fun one. It feels like more of a reboot and re-entry point for a new chapter of the franchise for a new generation of gamers who first met Fox McCloud on the big screen, but long-time franchise fans will find a lot to enjoy in the refreshed experience.
  63. Jun 24, 2026

A remake of the classic N64 title Star Fox delivers a visually overhauled experience that stays faithful to the 1997 original. The updated graphics look fantastic, and the orchestral music stands out as never before. The new Joy-Con mouse controls are awkward, but the core gameplay holds up well for both newcomers and returning players.
  64. Jun 24, 2026
    80
With Star Fox, Nintendo delivers a solid remake featuring stylish graphics, likable heroes, and intense space action. The nostalgic gameplay is a true blessing for fans of the original, because it mostly feels like it has ever been. However, newcomers might easily find Star Fox to be mechanically outdated for that reason.

Nintendo has done it again: delivering a game that is truly worth your time. Whether you're a new or returning player, Star Fox has plenty to offer. From the gorgeous gameplay, audio, and voice-overs to the new features like co-op, multiplayer, and other extras, you'll easily sink a good number of hours into this version of Star Fox.

Star Fox features all the high-octane shooter action that you know and love, while introducing new game modes and features to offer even more replayability. Whether you’re an old or new fan, Star Fox is a fun ride - it’s reignited my desire for a brand-new adventure with Fox McCloud.

Star Fox the on-rail shooter returns once more in a remake with a beautiful visual fidelity and remains true to the same fun gameplay we used to know and love. This is a 1:1 remake, aside from improvements to the story narrative and the graphical upgrade. The game itself did not receive any other significant advancements outside of these 2 components.
  69. Jun 24, 2026

Star Fox feels like it’s on the cusp of relevance again with this masterfully done remake of an iconic classic. The same and familiar action from the original is wonderfully realized for the Switch 2 and adds more nuance, fleshed out cutscenes, and all the wonderfully weird secrets fans can expect to uncover.
  70. Jun 24, 2026
    78
Even though the rail-shooter formula might seem somewhat anachronistic to some—given how much the gaming landscape has changed in the thirty years since the original Star Fox 64 launched and how the genre has largely faded into obscurity—it remains a thrilling and entertaining experience, as well as the best possible way to play a genuine gaming classic. While the gameplay offers no major innovations, it remains enjoyable and responsive. Ultimately, whether you are a complete newcomer to the Star Fox series or a long-time veteran, we highly recommend this new edition, especially given its affordable price point.
  71. Jun 24, 2026
    75
Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 delivers the definitive version of Lylat Wars. The enhanced visuals, new cutscenes, and improved presentation make this classic rail shooter more immersive than ever. However, the remake adds very little new content, making it feel more like a premium remaster than a full reimagining. Fans of the original will love it, but it may struggle to attract a new generation of players.
  72. Jun 24, 2026
    75
I hope that Star Fox for the Switch 2 will inspire Nintendo to chart a new course for the franchise. The remake offers the same gameplay and storyline as previous versions and reimaginings, introducing a few new features that enrich the experience but don’t really wow. The multiplayer and co-op modes, at least, breathe new life into the game.

Star Fox is a competent and beautiful remake of an absolute classic, with expanded dialogue and a cinematic presentation that impresses from start to finish. The problem is that its short runtime combined with a route system that forces you to restart from scratch every playthrough ends up making exploration more tedious than fun. It's a great pick for anyone who never played the original and wants to experience Fox McCloud's story, but those expecting something more substantial may come away feeling like it needed a little more.

You can’t really ask more of a remake, as long as it means a graphical overhaul and some quality of life additions while preserving the tight controls, fast pace and replayable nature of the game.

As a re-introduction to the franchise, it serves its purpose well. Fox and the gang are made entirely interesting by new layers to this story, and I personally think their new designs are great for the modern era. But when the credits rolled, what most excited me about Star Fox was its potential as a building block to the next step.

Star Fox is a remake that fully preserves the essence of Lylat Wars whilst modernising not only its graphics but also its gameplay mechanics. However, it’s been a long time since the heyday of the Nintendo 64. So, whilst the characters’ charm and the Arwing controls still hold their own, this reimagining lacks the boldness needed to overcome the limitations of the rail shooter genre today. At 50 euros, it’s still a good opportunity to rediscover a major exclusive from the Kyoto-based company’s history, but it will take more than this to truly put the franchise back on track.

Star Fox is a solid remake of an excellent game, maintaining everything that made the original a cult classic while sprucing it up with a new lick of paint. Still, it feels overpriced given the campaign’s short length and the unfortunate lack of new content aside from the decently enjoyable, albeit rather threadbare, multiplayer mode.

Putting thoughts and feelings on remakes aside, Star Fox is a good game in its own right with a lot of replay value and a great entry point to the series. While it tends to play a little bit more safe then I would’ve liked to see for such an upscaled modern remake with countless opportunities to expand on the story and offer new content, there is plenty here to get to know the characters and have a good understanding of the Star Fox universe for the first time. For veterans and fans, I also think there is enough to do and appreciate, with plenty of challenges to master the game if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to become the greatest ace pilot in the galaxy.

Star Fox for Switch 2 is a technically sharp, visually upgraded remake that copies Star Fox 64’s routes, mission structure, and brisk campaign almost one-to-one. Rail-shooter fans get a tight arcade loop that shines on higher difficulties and finally makes many classic setpieces look the way they did in memory. But the short stages and box‑ticking extras like challenges, mouse aiming, and co‑op do little to deepen the experience, and compared with Assault, Zero, or indie rivals like Ex Zodiac, this conservative design feels reluctant to push pacing or mechanics in new directions.

Star Fox is a remake, but it also appears to be an attempt at a reset. The franchise has never really found its footing, despite clearly having a lot of love from Nintendo. This story has always felt like a starting point, establishing the characters and hinting at their backstory. So altogether, this remake may be the best possible way to give the series a fresh start. At the same time, the original still holds up very well, and if you have Switch Online with the Expansion Pass, you can already play it. That makes this hard to recommend, which is a shame. If Nintendo means this to be a new beginning for Star Fox, retreading familiar ground undermines the effort.

When you set out to remake an excellent game, the end result is bound to be enjoyable—especially when you don’t alter a single pixel of the original structure. That said, the few additions brought to the table are far from being undeniable selling points, whether it’s the numerous cutscenes or a pleasant multiplayer mode that quickly runs out of steam. What remains, then, is an art direction that proves genuinely successful, highlighting and enhancing just how strong a video game experience Star Fox 64 already was in its day.

Star Fox 2026 is a high-quality remake of a game that hasn’t aged all that well. Lylat Wars still has its moments, which are elevated here thanks to Velan Studios’ production and a top-notch soundtrack. But beneath the brand-new skin, it’s still the heart of a late-’90s rail shooter that beats. So rather than for newer generations, we’d recommend this lovely “Madeleine de Proust” primarily to those feeling nostalgic.

Star Fox is a fairly safe remaster, and for fans of the original there’s a lot here to love, especially the incredible audio-visual upgrade. The central mode is showing its age mechanically, though, and without the power of nostalgia, I’m interested to see how people respond to its classic on-rails action. Meanwhile, the online mode is deserving of your and your friends’ time, but you have to hope that some extra attention is poured into it post-launch.

Star Fox definitely brings back the same feeling that the game from the 90s did. For fans who want to relive the experience of playing this space adventure, it might be a great game. However, it misses on the opportunities to deepen the plot and add new elements to the franchise.

By being overly faithful to the source material, this Star Fox remake misses the mark. Nintendo has revived a dated genre without injecting any meaningful gameplay modernization or worthwhile additional content. It is essentially the 1997 game ported to 2026, complete with all its structural flaws—starting with a pitifully short runtime and archaic AI. Up against modern competition and the current trend of remakes that successfully reinvent old formulas, Star Fox falls short... and leaves me worried about the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 later this year. Here’s hoping more effort goes into that one.

I'd have loved more levels here, new worlds, more Star Fox. Would that have been too much to ask? I guess so. It's a shame that Star Fox isn't a real sequel, but I'd love to think that, perhaps, that could still come depending on how well this one does.

Star Fox is another good excuse to revisit one of Nintendo’s best games, but it doesn’t meaningfully build on it. Fox McCloud is left in the same stasis he’s been in for decades now: surviving the Lylat Wars to show that he can walk in his father’s footsteps. I get it. How many more times will he have to prove he’s his own fox before he’s allowed to fight his own battles? Give his future cubs a war story that’s worth feeling insecure about.

Star Fox is illustrative of both the good and bad of this trend. In many ways, the visual overhaul benefits the experience, making it feel even more like a sci-fi movie you can play. But it also shows how awkward it can be when old-school gameplay meets modern graphics. In this case, the balance mostly works out in Star Fox’s favor. But it also has me more curious than ever to see how Nintendo remakes one of the most iconic and influential Zelda games.
