We split into 4 teams and played at all hours of the 24-hour day until the N64 console overheated. To remedy that, we rented a replacement console and kept playing Zelda around the clock. Pretty intense circumstances. I played the game with my team every few hours for a couple weeks, and then I suddenly lost interest. During those years, I preferred to play other games, like Age of Empires (PC), Half-Life (PC), Golden Eye (N64), and World Cup Soccer '98 (N64). I never beat this Zelda game, although I did beat the SNES Zelda (Link to the Past) the summer before this one was released. Since then, I have enjoyed other action adventure titles with a bit more grit to them and greater character customization: games from franchises like Mass Effect or Diablo. Or games with more interesting mechanics, like Half-Life 2 and Portal. The puzzles in Zelda are rarely satisfying for me: either too arbitrary (random shapes in a sequence) or too repetitive (talk to every NPC and put hints together). I recently acquired Breath of the Wild and Wind Waker for Wii U. I gave it to my boys. I played the games a bit but grew tired of the Zelda games after a few days. I have professional challenges to attend to, and mentally taxing games are not for me now. I would like a game based in the Zelda universe that I can play for just about 25 minutes a day over a year. Maybe something like the casual flow of a adventure/story game like The Walking Dead. I am more often playing a game like Clash Royale, nowadays. When I want a really immersive experience I put on a VR headset and playing something crazy scary like Dread Halls. Nothing against those who enjoy the game, but it doesn't fit into my life. Expand

    Now to the game:

Zelda - Ocarina of Time is a Masterpiece. Released in 1998 (1 Year earlier than Castlevania 64, which has awful graphics, controls and gameplay, but is comparable) it was the 2. Nintendo 64 Game with really good Controls. It was also, after Mario 64 , the first Action Adventure worth playing on Nintendo 64.

The Game is packed full with secrets, collectables and content. You were introduced to Epona, a now iconic Horse in the Zelda Universe and could also ride it - In a fun and entertaining way.

The characters, for the time, were scary or hilarious, entertaining or evil. You could tell pretty fast what kind of NPC you are facing, which was a challenge due the lack of high resolution textures.

Link, the main character, was sympathic and easy to love.

The graphics, for it times, were amazing. You felt like LIVING in Hyrule and everything you did wasnt just Link, it was you.

The amount of dungeons was impressive. So much content for a N64 Game wasnt something you could just expect. Even compared to AAA Titles today, the Game still stands out as high class.

To be fair, the 3D Remake for the 3DS wasnt necessary. But it gave people today the chance to play this Masterpiece, so it is absolutely fine.

Sure, for me, this title offers also nostalgic feelings and memories of months of entertainment. But isnt that also something the game achieved? Entertain me in 98 and made me fall in love?

The Game is dated. It is, absolutely. If you want to play it, buy the 3DS Version and enjoy a great Adventure while you are in the train, bus or at home on the couch.

The difficulty is trying to figure out planning out the placement of everything. Ocarinas puzzles are the opposite. The difficult part is that you have no idea how anything works. It is easy and boring once you figure out all along a stick could burn a cobweb. Later in the game I was just trying to complete the part in dodongo's cavern and ended up not having any idea what i was even meant to do. And then, the drag. The tedious feeling of time being wasted was everywhere. I gave up after barely figuring out dodongo. I would say some parts are better than others. It's fortunate, then, that he had the help from such a rich cast of supporting characters that offer age-old life lessons and advice as he progresses through the universe. One of the most nurturing and devoted aspects of the game is the wealth of moral direction and wisdom each character gives you throughout Link's travels. They are responsible for embedding the strength of character into the foundations of the game, and helping to forge a truly great hero from a naïve young boy. Whether it's the unwavering support of Navi, the venerable wisdom of the Great Deku Tree or the empowerment from Zelda and the sages, each imparts virtue and instils the heroic spirit in Link that directs him to grow into a well-rounded and admirable protagonist, and it's this endearing cast of supporting characters that helps to engage players in such a memorable way. As well as this, it's inevitable that the virtues these characters impart will embed themselves in the minds and hearts of players, especially as Ocarina of Time was such a success with all ages.

One of the characteristics of Ocarina of Time that makes it stand out more than any other game is the sense of epic adventure and maturation that Link must go through to succeed. There is a brilliantly unravelling character arc threaded into the narrative of this game. The story begins in Link's tiny home, where he is just a child but he is soon faced with the life-changing and daunting task of saving the world. Great responsibility is thrust upon him by fate, not choice, and this is what makes him a great protagonist. Where others might shy away from such a task, Link rises to the challenge and accepts his fate that was written long before he came into being. In no other game does he mature in the same way he does here. We literally play out the transformation from boy to man as his quest develops and there is constantly an emotive power behind his budding maturity as a hero. His growth from a scared little kid into a brave warrior reflects the epic-ness of the game as it spans worlds and times. We can't help but root for him, not just because we are playing him but because he earns our admiration by consistently bearing the weight of the world on his very young shoulders. We feel satisfied when we've finally finished the quest and witnessed Link complete his coming-of-age journey as a fully-accomplished hero.

The incredibly god-like music that has been immortalized in the annals of history, enough said

Also there is a great sense of duty and that Link is fulfilling his destiny by accepting the mission to save Hyrule, even though his expressions exhibit fear and concern that he may not be capable. As a young boy, he is ostracised as an outcast for being different because he doesn't have a fairy. He manages to rise from the obscurity of Kokiri forest - where he has never really fit in - to forge his own identity as the Hero of Time, risking his life to save the world but constantly maintaining his quiet humility. Leaving his old life behind, he sacrifices everything, even his childhood (which is, albeit, eventually restored) in his endeavours to succeed. He is expected to repeatedly put his faith in the strangers he encounters along the way, strangers who provide him with vital direction on his quest, which he does without question. Ocarina of Time emits this grand aura of good versus evil. Aided by a brilliant narrative with an unescapable sense of dread, there is an impression that Link is part of something bigger than himself, and it adds gravity to his journey and emphasises his hero status even further. Consequently he becomes a symbol for everything he is fighting for.

While many have outsold it, and released prettier than it, no game has come close to matching the incredible heart of this legendary title. Objective GOAT, 10/10

This game was entertaining when playing it but I never felt like playing it again after some time. Critic also goes to the reused storyline. Triforce and Zelda and Ganon again.

Finally critic goes to the exploitation of nostalgia that had some players purchase the game 3 or 4 times across multiple consoles and at a high price every time without actually replaying the game.

The story is just so addictive. I just wanted to play and to play, to explore the world and learn the story. The dungeons are the main atraction. Their design is awesome and everyone has got other things. Sometimes you have to find the way to a dungeon through a desert, sometimes you must find an item as a child to master the dungeon as an adult and many, many more. This game is fascinating with his secrets, his rich details and amazing gameplay. This is why this game was never boring to me. I could play it many times without saying some day: I'm fiinished, i've done all in this game,. There is nothing more to find."
Some boss fights were very fresh and amazing while playing the game, just like for example Phantom Ganon, Twinrova or even Ganondorf.
But there where also boring bosses with only one scheme and easy to kill like Bongo Bongo or Morpha.
I would also like to get more story after collecting the three Holy Stones. It looked like: do the dungeons, get the amulets and we'll se what happens. It would be nice if there would be more story and side missions between the later dungeons.

All in all The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is an amazing game. You just have to play it. Great story, awesome world with uncountable secrets and phenomenal gameplay. Maybe it would be even better for me if i had played it in 1998, when it was realeased.

In it's twentieth anniversary, It still is the best gaming experience I ever had with a game, maybe BOTW came close to that sense of exploration, but this is the peak of video game art. The game excels in everything it tries to achieve gameplay, design, music, etc. You could write dozens of books about why it is so good, but it's better to experience the game by yourself.

This game was and is such a large part of my life and as much as I would love to say this game is perfect, there are three things i wish I could change in this game. First I wish there were more side missions. Yes there are quite a few already in the game, but I feel like if they would have added more it could have made this game feel even more realistic and adventurous. Maybe if they would have added that expansion they intended to add with the N64 it would have fixed this issue. Second I think I can speak for everyone when I say having the option to skip through discussions with Kaepora Gaebora would make this game less aggravating. I know some people may argue saying that even though it's annoying this is one of the things in the game that help you experience these different emotions, which is one of the reasons why this game so great. All I have to say is they could have at least made his discussions shorter and sty on topic. Last but not least the fact that the game ends once you defeat Gannon Dorf is so disappointing to me. Now before you jump out lashing at me, let me say I do have mixed feelings about it. The ending to me is the most satisfying and least satisfying part of the game. You spend countless hours going around trying to find all of the little hidden secrets the game holds, getting to know all of the people who live in the game and when it comes time for you to defeat the evil within it, it justs ends. Maybe this is what makes this game so desirable, because it makes you want to take your time adventuring and once you defeat the game you get to start all over so you can try an find things you may have missed the time before. However, I would like to know what happens after you win. Does link and Zelda get together? How is the world now that Gannon Dorf is gone? Has a different evil come to threaten the peace? This game leaves you with so many questions and sadly not to may answers.

I would love to see nintendo come out with a remastered version in HD for the switch. I first thought that a remastered version would possibly ruin the game but seeing the HD Unreal Engine 4 screenplays online has totally changed my mind. I currently don't own a switch but if they do decide to release a remastered version of this game I will totally go out and buy one.

But besides these techical issues that diminished the chances of this game standing the test of time, it's still really fun. The characters are distinct and alive, the world was groundbreaking for the time, and still manages to be ok in the current age, some of the scores on this will really get stuck in you head for some days, the graphics are great for N64 standards and the game has plenty of extra content to keep you busy if you get bored of the main story.
Even though Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece burdened by some flaws due to hardware issues or Nintendo's need to sell Nintendo Power, you should definitely give this game a try on the new 3ds remaster, or if you're old school, just play it on the N64 and look past the annoyances that come with this version

It's a decades old game that was revolutionary at the time but newer games have improved on it's formula to the point where OOT is outdated, it didn't age as gracefully as Super Mario 64, another early 3D game. Navi isn't as annoying as her reputation makes her seem but she does tell you a lot of obvious stuff and repeats herself a lot. First of all, the music is excellent. Absolutely perfect, no further explanation. There is so much music for every case and they are going to fit in the mood perfectly. Koji Kondo did a great job.

I think the Nintendo team created the puzzles incredibly clever. Sometimes you need to think for 10-20 minutes to beat the puzzle. After finishing the puzzle, you say how I couldn't think that.

Enemy variary is enough, combat is good and boss battles are perfect, not so hard or not easy. NPCs(non player characters) are great for those years.

And the open world there are so many places that you can interact with people in the open world. You can ride a horse or you can join in the slingshot throwing competition or you can explore. You can make any of these situations. What ever you do you will be rewarded in any way.

Just about every praise people have given this game since its debut in 1998 is well deserved. It has well designed dungeons, memorable music, a grand sense of adventure. However, this game is not perfect. It was made in an era before right-stick camera control was a thing, and as such, if you are accustomed to newer games, it may be a bit clunky for you. Moreover, while the world is truly vast and wide-open, the central field area where you will be doing most of your travelling is unfortunately not very interesting. It has atmosphere, but there's almost nothing to do. The game also lacks a certain amount of character and personality that future Zelda games have like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. That being said, this is still a game worth playing. It is very well designed and immensely satisfying by the end. Please play this game if you haven't. Expand

Mechanics that until today (2021) have been used in different games of the saga and also in other incredible games like Dark Souls. I recommend this Zelda to anyone who has not given the opportunity to try it, games with the level of greatness and nostalgia like this are very few. Expand

TItled "Most influential game ever", and for good reason. This game's soundtrack is amazing, the world is beautiful and interesting, the bosses are (apart from Morpha and Dodongo) challenging, the mechanics are innovative, the dungeons have great puzzles and themes, and it made the Zelda formula to the best it can get. Even though there are slight annoyances for me, like the reward forTItled "Most influential game ever", and for good reason. Even though there are slight annoyances for me, like the reward for killing all the Skulltulas being just a golden rupee, the text speed being obnoxiously slow, and there not being much content apart from the main quest, this is a masterpiece everyone should play. The player will be drawn into the Zelda fantasy world from the moment the opening sequence bursts onto the screen, and the game won't let go-not even after finishing the quest.

Realism is one of the major reasons this title is so amazing. After playing for a while it feels as though you have actually been to Hyrule.

Featuring unparalleled 3D environments, a deep and involved quest, brilliant and intuitive play controls, and a well-developed cinematic quality that enhances rather than overwhelms the whole game experience, Miyamoto's latest soon-to-be-classic title deserves to be played by each and every person who might deign to consider themselves a fan of great games.
