well, what can I say about this game?
That nintendo truly made the perfect RPG game, this game isn't about the story, but about happiness, despair and helping people.
no other piece of art could ever make time seem so important as nintendo did no other game could make such good feeling of rejection, depression and despair, what it did is make people happy, all npcs have a dream, a thing

This game is better than ocarina of time. I said it. That's not nostalgia talking. I actually played the game for the first time last year, and it was amazing. Now if you noticed, I gave the game a 9/10, and that's because of one thing. Its not super accessible. The game has a save system that makes the game harder, plus there's some classic N64 jank, but **** that. This game is a masterpiece.

My favorite game of all time. The tone and atmosphere of this game are phenomenal. After a masterpiece like Ocarina of Time, this game had high expectations and thankfully it definitely lived up to them and then some. The time constraints, both during development and gameplay put the pressure on this game, forming it into a flawless diamond.

From the direct start of the game, you can tell that this game will be much darker than Ocarina of Time. That shot of Link on his horse walking through the forest creates an eerie, unsettling vibe that's present through the rest of the game. The story of the game is one of the most interesting I've seen. The moon is going to crash into Clock Town in 3 days killing everyone. It's Link's job to awaken the four giants to stop the moon before the three days end. Seems like a simple premise. But the three-day cycle allows for some of the most unique character situations, dialogues, side quests, etc. A lot of people dog on the game for the three-day mechanic, but I love it. You have to plan out what you're going to do in those three days and work with the character's schedules. There's a side quest for the couples mask where you run the clock to the last day, last minute to reunite a couple who accept that they're going to die. This acceptance of death is something that adds to the dark vibe of the game. Some characters escape Clock Town on the final day in hopes of surviving, and some stay knowing that running away wouldn't matter and death is inevitable. When you arrive in the great bay, you watch a Zora die in front of you. Again this game deals with much darker themes and story elements than Ocarina. The score in this game is nothing to sleep on either. It's not as easily memorable as Ocarina, but the OST still has a lot of memorable tracks that fit its vibe. Overall this game is a classic. With a short time, the developers had to make this game, they created an unforgettable experience, with many powerful moments and a gripping story/characters. People like to write this game off as just a worse rehash of Ocarina. But glossing over the one would be glossing over a masterpiece! Expand

Majora's Mask is a prime example of something that wasn't fully appreciated at the time of its initial release, but has since developed a massive following, gaining the love and recognition it deserves. There are even debates as to which game between this and OoT is the better Zelda title. Which one you prefer will ultimately be determined by your preference. Majora's Mask, while carryingMajora's Mask is a prime example of something that wasn't fully appreciated at the time of its initial release, but has since developed a massive following, gaining the love and recognition it deserves. There are even debates as to which game between this and OoT is the better Zelda title. Which one you prefer will ultimately be determined by your preference. Majora's Mask, while carrying similar mechanics from OoT, has its own unique flavor and is much less traditional. The world is more strange, mysterious and often grim, and much less focus on traditional dungeon crawling compared to its predecessor. Really, though, both games are great for their own reasons. If you force me to choose between the two games, I'm going to choose Majora's Mask.

Hands down, the best aspect about this game, and the reason I would prefer this to OoT, is the world in which the game takes place. Termina is such a stark contrast to Hyrule, and in my opinion more interesting. The world building is some of the best the series has seen, and it's filled to the brim with interesting characters, each with their own unique stories to tell. MM also absolutely nails its atmosphere. It's easily one of the darkest games in the series, with many moments that completely caught me off guard, both big and subtle, that I didn't think would ever be put into a Nintendo game, let alone a Zelda game.

Of course, it's not just the story and the world that are different. Core gameplay is about the same as it was in OoT. You explore dungeons, beat the boss, collect the thing and move one. However, this time around the game is under a time limit. Thanks to the mischievous Skull Kid, in 3 in-game days, a giant moon with a evil face will drop down on Termina and kill everyone. You will need to collect masks and ancient summon giants to help you stop the moon from falling and stop Skull Kid. Luckily, time is on your side as you can use your ocarina from the previous game to go forward, back and slow down time as you need to. You'll be given three primary masks that will transform you into a Deku Scrub, a Goron Warrior, or a Zora, each with their own unique abilities that get put to great use very often.

Dungeons are also not given as much focus this time around as there are only four main dungeons as opposed to roughly nine. What dungeons there are, though, are some of the most inventive and challenging in the series (looking at you, Great Bay). Instead, side quests are going to be the primary focus. While technically optional, they are one of the only ways you'll be able to gain new equipment and heart pieces, and even then you'll want to go out of your way to do these anyway since the characters you interact with are enjoyable and the stories are so interesting. They range from hilarious to heartwarming to heartbreaking. It's through these side quests that you will earn a majority of the game's masks. Most of the masks are primarily used to complete other side quests, but a few of them do have useful properties outside of them.

The time travel mechanics are put to use the most with the side quests as everyone's routines happen at different times, and many of them require you to fulfill a prerequisite to either complete or even start. Traveling through time is limited, though, as you can only jump forward halfway through a day, and some of them take place at specific points that you will have no choice but to just wait on, and that can be pretty cumbersome.

Majora's Mask is not the most accessible Zelda game out there, so I would be hard-pressed to recommend this as someone's first Zelda experience. However, it is absolutely worth playing at some point. If you are looking for something more dark and unconventional in your Zelda games, this is the one for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nintendo didn't try to one-up OOT and it shows, but that is the only reason this game works, this game would not have worked with a normal development time, in one year Nintendo made a full Zelda game, and personally speaking, it's my favorite game ever. Every design choice the game makes intentionally is less ambitious then OOT, and it shows. Only four dungeons, only young Link, No Zelda? This game should not work at all. As Nerrel said in his video "Was Majora's Mask 3D a bad remake" he says "the game should have been a train wreck" and it really should have, why would a game as ridiculous as this be ANYONE'S favorite game? Well, where it lacks common sense, it gains in everything else. This is THE most mature Zelda game, it deals with actual death, grief, and pain. Koji Kondo did an amazing soundtrack that fits so well with the game, I like OOT's soundtrack more but MM's is so much more fitting. Without the sidequest this game would literally be as forgotten to Nintendo as the Virtual Boy. It is so hard to describe what MM is. If you haven't played it play it. Don't have an N64? you probably have a Wii or 3DS, get MM3D is you have a 3DS (despite it being far worse than the original), and if you have a Wii by a gamecube memory card (if you don't already have it) and get The Zelda collector's edition, you get MM, OOT and the original 2 Zelda's. But it's worth it to buy it just for MM and OOT. A true masterpiece and a must play Expand

The first time (or times) I played MM I was 11 years old and contrary to what I thought, my English wasn't that good so playing this game again on my thirties was like see another whole new game.

First of all, is not that I have mixed feelings towards MM, I love this game but there are some things that I wish they were less notorious than they are. Let's start with the bad first and move it out of the way: the dungeons, they're memorable but not in a good way (there are only 4 so maybe that also helps), is not that they're terrible, I think they all have a lot of problems in their navigation and design, but what brokes the experience to me is the Stray Fairy mechanic (you need to hunt down 15 fairies in each dungeon in order to obtain power ups), it makes you do a fair amount of backtracking and remember chambers in dungeons that as I told you before, have poor navigation and design, this thing just goes worst on each dungeon, being the 4th dungeon the supreme offender (in there you need to do a mechanic that makes the whole dungeon upside or downside, so if you forget at least 1 fairy you have to reverse it and go all the way to get it), when people joke about the OoT water temple beign annoying because you have to equip and unequip the boots, its because they know nothing or at least they don't know the Stone Tower Temple.

The boss fights have this half-cooked mechanic in which you need to use certain race to defeat it, being a Zora, Deku or Goron in theory that sounds amazing but the only one that hit the mark was the Goron fight, the other ones kind of doesn't. Speaking of fights and continuing with the bad things, the controls can be very stiff in more than few situations, the worse one is the aiming, if you're going to use first-person perspective, good luck.

Given what I told you, you may think that I don't like this game, and in other games sure I wouldn't recommend it but, what this game doesn't have in dungeon and control quality, it triples it in the atmosphere and putting you in the boots of Link. This is a sad game that has all kinds of sad stories and moments, treason, death, abduction, there is a lot of hard and sad themes that are extremely well handed in here, merge them with an outstanding soundtrack and you'll have a game for the ages, it also has this time mechanic which serves as a reminder for you the player and for the world of Termina, it's brilliant 4th wall breaking without you noticing it. One of my favorite things in the game is that no matter how hard you try, you can't help them all because you have limited time and even when you do it, the time resets and everything will happen again, is a sad thought but it does a lot to help the narrative.

Another thing that newer Zeldas haven't matched yet, are the side quests, specifically the Mask quests, they feel so magical and esoteric and makes you connect tons to the characters, my favorite one may be the one of a certain couple, which I won't spoil but it takes three days and some masks to complete, and gives you a fantastic closure to it.

Eiji Aonuma did something very impressive and not short of brilliant, no matter how I hate certain things, they're overwhelmed by the good ones, to me, in no other Zelda game I have felt the weight of the Hero of Time like in Majora's Mask. If you haven't tried yet, please do so, just be wary that the Game Cube (Collector's Edition) version has some crashes and can be very hard to swallow.

The dark tragic story is creative. It is very satisfying. The dungeons and bosses are some of the best in the series. The characters in clock town are also great. Everyone is facing a tragedy. This causes great side quests and emotions. 1. Where Majora rises to the top is its concept – three days to save the world. The execution of the idea is flawless: time means everything and the player always has to be aware. The save system is absolutely perfect, letting players feel comfortable in controlling time but still keeping them on the edge of their seats when things get hairy.
