This game pretty much reinvented platformers and it turned out so well. It is also super satisfying. You can't tell me it didn't feel good to finally grab that star. But just like Ocarina of Time, even though you're revolutionary, it doesn't mean you won't have faults. For example while I named so many iconic levels there are also some bland and forgettable ones as well. Dire Dire Docks, Wet Dry World, and Hazy Mazy Cave being the worst. These all just felt forgettable and I didn't care to get the stars in them. Other than that, this game is a masterpiece. I give Mario 64 a 9.5/10, and I would put it on the S tier. Even though Ocarina of Time is great as of 10/23/20 Mario 64 is my favorite N64 game. Expand

The superstar 3D mario game is something that will be stuck in your head. Stars to collect are challenging and rewarding, and the courses are all memorable. You can beat the game without going through much griding and frustration, but 100% is challenging, and takes some time to complete.

One of the most revolutionary games ever created. A true trend-setter. Super Mario 64 is unquestionably worthy of respect and admiration for how much it moved the industry forward and for just being a kick a** game. Close to 25 years after its initial release, SM64's DNA is still felt within modern day platformers. However, 25 years is enough time for other games to come along, refine its formula and in some ways even surpass it. SM64 may be the king, but it's not immune to criticism. More and more of its age has shown itself over time, but that doesn't mean its not still worth experiencing.

Most of SM64's age come from its overall design. Obviously, the game visually could be considered ugly, but really it's unfair to compare the game to standards set even a console generation after this so it's a moot point to make. Besides, I still really dig the blocky, simplistic style this game goes for. It's what helps add a lot to this game's charm and memorable presentation. When it comes to design, I'm not talking simply about the general design of the courses themselves, but rather the game's structure. The general goal is to collect power stars in each stage. Upon collecting one, you are immediately booted from the level and you'll have to start back at the beginning to start the next task. In more open-ended stages like Bob-Omb Battlefield, Shifting Sand Land or Dire, Dire Docks this isn't an issue. It's when you get to more linear stages like Womp's Fortress, Tick Tock Clock and Tall, Tall Mountain where this starts to become more of an issue and a majority of the missions simply require to climb to the top at a certain point and collect the star. It can feel tedious having to climb all the way back just to go a little further, finish the mission and repeat the process. Thankfully, a majority of the levels do not follow this philosophy so this is not at all a game-breaker. However, the one consistent problem that every stage has is the 100 coin star missions. Early in the game, it's not that big of a deal, but once you start reaching higher floors in the castle it can become an absolute chore as coins become more and more spread out, and you struggle to find those last handful that you need. God forbid you get that last coin in a spot that is either dangerous or damn near impossible to reach.

General controls have also started to show their age, particularly with the camera. For a first crack at it, they did a darn good job. Unfortunately, there will be times where the camera either doesn't give you a proper view of your surroundings or gets stuck in a position to where you can't turn it around any further to try and improve your view.

That's really about it as far as personal gripes, because for everything wrong with this game, everything else more than makes up for it. For starters, Mario is an absolute dream to control. He's got such an incredible amount of moves at your disposal for you to take full advantage of and to finish missions in a multitude of ways. There few things as satisfying in life as getting good at playing this game. While I may have an issue with the general mission structure, SM64 gives players an insane amount of wiggle room when it comes to unlocking new areas of the castle. Every star in the game is of equal value. As long as you collect enough to reach new areas, you grab whichever ones you feel like getting. You can avoid entire levels you don't like this way if you're thorough. Personally, SM64 just isn't the same unless I collect everything, but I'm glad that Nintendo gives you the option regardless. You'll also find scattered about a few power ups that, while situational, are enjoyable to use. I also love most of the levels themselves. Many are the standard Mario flare, but obviously they would want to keep things a little safe to ease people into it. They are simply fun to explore about, and a majority of the star collecting is very satisfying. This game also houses some of the most memorable and fun secrets in gaming, some you'll discover on you own while others take a bit of know-how.

If for whatever reason you have yet to experience SM64, it is a definite must. Make no mistake, it's aged a fair bit, and there are just some things that are hard to forgive when you've played other games similar to this that came afterwards and refined it, but really there's a charm to this game that can never be matched.

Despite the passing of time, Super Mario 64 proves to us the reason why the Platformer was so popular in the 5th and 6th generations. Sadly, many of those games were cheap knockoffs that are NOTHING compared to the original (Ratchet and Clarnk, The original Crash, and the original Spyro, obviously do not count; they are awesome.) This Game is overrated. I mean, it can be fun, but it aged rather poorly, the camera is probably the worse i have ever seen in a 3D platformer, the Gameplay is pretty stiff and clunky, and it can get pretty repetitive. I'd recommend later Mario Games that improved on the formula rather than this one.

This is just as fun and mesmerising as the day it came out. Mixing the playful fantasy of Mario with immersive 3D graphics is a stunning combination. The DS version doesn't have the same playability. As others say, it may well still be the best game ever created- certainly the one with the most freedom of play.

It's one of the top 10 best games of all time. The levels are brilliant, and the puzzles are diverse and inventive. When you compare this to today's Mario Sunshine, there's really no contest. Mario 64 is a vastly superior game.

Alongside Ocarina Of Time, Super Mario 64 still stands tall as one of the best video games to date. Pros: Innovating gameplay, characters, and level designs; rich, colorful visuals; smooth controls and camera angles; overall, it's the best Mario game ever! Cons: Aside from some minimal flaws, you just have to be a Mario-hater to dislike any aspect of this game.

This game lacks at nothing and is the pure definition of 3-d mario. as classic as it is, this game is outstanding with its length, difficulty, and gameplay. While not boasting great graphics, the game's classic tunes should never be forgotton and its themes to be the base of many modern gaming themes. A recommendation, classic, and superior game indeed.

Fantastic, incredible graphics texture at the time, Super Mario 64 showed us, how powerful he can change the video game industry. Over the top plat-forming and memorable moments and characters define the game. If it was possible to buy old games in this year, this will be in my list, but because it isn't it will cost you an arm and a leg to get this classic.

I would had given Super Mario 64 a perfect 10 if I was 9 years old again, but I have given the game a bit of a lower score just because some of the controls on the N64 controls (like flying with the wing cap) feels a bit uncomfortable which does not hold up in today's gaming world. Super Mario 64 may look simple, but less equals more with this Super Mario title. Fans of Mario and 3D platformers will have a fun time playing Mario in a 3D universe. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have you ever played a game that is so darn fun that you can't put it down, even if you 100% complete all save files? This is that game. If I was forced to pick one flaw it would be the storyline, which is barely flawed anyway! You play as Mario, the famous plumber, rendered for the first time in history in polygons. Sure, the storyline is the same old "Bowser captures princess, Mario duffs up Bowser, everyone lives happily ever after" shtick, but this entry throws in paintings and Power Stars into the mix. Bowser owns dimensions contained in paintings that are a danger to Mario, hindering him on his quest. in the paintings you will find the humorously named Power Stars. Power Stars are like keys to doors, because essentially the more Power Stars you have, the more doors you can enter, and entering doors allows you to quest for more Powers Stars. It's a vicious cycle, but you want to get sucked in. Which other video game rewards you with a giant's step towards 100% completion for collecting 100 gold coins? On the topic of coins, a gold coin (canonically named a yellow coin) is worth one buck, a red one two, and blue a whopping five. Collecting eight red coins in a single course rewards you with a-you guessed it-Power Star. The game's graphics were amazing in its time, and to some still are. We're talking about one of the first games to use mainly polygons here. One of the first games to use polygons, and maybe the best. The sound is epic, with a range of tunes going from genuinely day-improving to genuinely scary. Even when you've got all 120 Power Stars (and shed a tear or sixteen), there's still fun to be had. In the Princess' castle grounds, there is a cannon only activated when you have 120 stars that will blast you to the castle roof where you'll find (spoiler) old comrade Yoshi, who will give you 100 lives and an improved triple jump power! (spoiler end) And on the Internet you may encounter sites that gives suggestions of activities to do in the game that are meant to be done after 100% completion! So, even after beating the final boss and collecting all 120 Power Stars, there's still much fun to be had.
One of the best games ever.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is really overrated, and there are many reasons why. For one, most of the love for this game is nostalgia. The levels in this game are not good, with wonky and sharp levels with misplaced textures that make the game feel like it was made by a 5 year old on Super Mario Maker. An upside though is that this game is one of the nicest looking on the system, with most N64 games being horribly stale and ugly looking. Another terrible thing about the game is the star placement. Some stars are in extremely dumb and arbitrary position. Like in stage 2, Whomp's Fortress, there is a star where you have to shoot Mario out of a canon into a random wall with no indication that that's where you need to shoot. One of the things I hate about this game is how whenever you get a star in a stage, it kicks you back out to the castle. This is just a lazy way to draw out a short game with only 18 stages! And finally, the wiped cream topped on this craptacular game, is the controls and camera. I don't care what any one says. The controls are terrible. Mario is slippery as hell, and I can barely do I think without flipping half way across the screen. Mario's move set is way to cluttered. Oh, and don't even get me started on the Wing Cap. That piece of hot garbage surved ice cold is literally a tool for more or less gliding, not flying, with those shoty controls. Although, Mario's swimming controls are amazing and discourage spamming. And those revolutionary camera controls, while good, where restricted from you 99% of the game. A good mechanic wasted. The only thing this thing does perfectly is the hub world, a masterpiece with the cool paintings gimmick. Overall the love for this game is nostalgia. It sucks a lot and when you break it down, it's more like one of the worst games ever than one of the best. What do I think of Super Mario 64 DS? It's better with updated graphics, more playable characters, and mini games. But still has terrible controls, a bad camera, and that dumb level design. In retrospect, Super Mario 64 was a revolutionary game, but even then, it didn't hold up well, and it certainly hasn't over the years. Much like any N64 game, it gets worse over time. Expand

The original version of Super Mario 64 is one of the most overrated games of all time.
Graphically, it's aged about as nicely as a carton of milk that came out in 1996. Oh wait, this trash game got released in '96.
Jokes aside, the graphics are pathetic and have aged poorly. The controls are fine, but there's WAY too many glitches that can either break the game or make the game way too

Jokes aside, the graphics are pathetic and have aged poorly.
The controls are fine, but there's WAY too many glitches that can either break the game or make the game way too easy (looking at the backwards long jump).

People get on Sonic '06 for having tons of glitches, yet in a playthrough of that game, I haven't experienced more than 2 unless I went out of my way to find them. Mario 64? You can run into these glitches on the fly, and often at that.

And the plot is just another "Bowser kidnapped the princess" scenario. It doesn't need to be a huge plot, just, I don't know, try to be unique? Mario Galaxy has a much more interesting story to tell, and even in 64 DS it at least mixes it up with Bowser simultaneously kidnapping Mario, Wario, and Luigi alongside Peach

Speaking of 64 DS, I feel no more need to review this ****** game. Quit idolizing it, it isn't that good. Go play 64 DS instead. More content, better graphics.

I'm sure we've all heard about Super Mario 64, one of the world's first 3D Platformers. The story is the usual unoriginal Mario storyline. Bowser has kidnapped Peach so go rescue her. However, it is brought down by bad controls and a terrible camera which make the game more difficult than it should be. The graphics are smooth and there is a decent amount of variety in level design. The music is mostly your generic happy platforming music although Bowser's Road and Dire Dire Docks are exceptions to this. Super Mario 64 suffers from some of the worst voice acting I have ever heard in my life. The worst part? The worst voice acting in the whole game is the first thing you hear when starting the game.

Overall, while Super Mario 64 was innovative and mindblowing when it was released in May 1996, it aged very quickly and time has not been kind to it at all, making what was once amazing back then, a bad game now.

This game basically sucked. Classics are not always good. The graphics were horrible Crash Bandicoot had way better gameplay and graphics. Bosses were lame and repetitive. For the DS was better because the original is not the best. Bowser looked like an oversized stuffed animals. The gameplay overall was boring got bored after collecting a couple stars. 1. The distribution of power stars in the levels is horrendous. I think 7 stars in one level is more than enough, don't you think? I understand that there are memory constraints, but there either could have been less stars overall, or 1 (maybe 2) more level(s). Definately a problem.
  2. It has quickly grown to become the standard by which almost all other games are measured.
  3. This is definitely a game no game collection should be without...Seriously!
