An amazingly relaxing experience- the music, the sense of flight, the changing skies and weather. I have yet to see anything match it, as even though I don't like simulators, I love flying this way. It shows just how revolutionary the N64 was, I hope more people get to try it, maybe on the Wii.

Played this game when it came out--and still think of it to this day. Great graphics, GREAT simulation...what a great flying experience. I'd buy a N64 just to re-live this experience. No flying game this good has been recently released for a console or PC.

This was a great game for the time like the SNES version it was very fun and the replay factor was very good too. Today is hard to find a game like this.

I'm scoring this game based on my impressions 20+ years ago, as out of that context it doesn't hold up quite so well today. That said, Pilotwings 64 is a lot of fun on its original platform, which sadly is the only official way to play it. There's not a ton of variety here, but I find it relaxing and enjoyable to pull out every once in a while. This is no Microsoft Flight Simulator, but it is leaps and bounds ahead of its frustrating SNES predecessor. Expand

I feel that this game gets forgotten a lot. This was a day 1 release for the N64. This and Mario 64 were the first 2 games that I got for the 64. I love this game so much. Hang gliding, the gyrocopter, and the rocket pack...NEVER GETS OLD! Then there is the wing suit, the cannonball and skydiving. This game is awesome and I still love it to this day. A shockingly great gaming experience that came completely out of left field, Pilotwings 64 manages to be a precedent-setting flight simulator that defies realism in some really creative ways, leaving players with a game that features not only a fun and challenging experience, but also a game rife with beautiful scenery and environments.

This game is not without shortcomings - I personally found the photography challenges in the hang glider mode to be frustratingly lacking in terms of direction and conveyance. Furthermore, the controls are solid, but not perfect. However, this game shines in so many other aspects. One facet I found particularly excellent was the sound design - this game has excellent music, as well as some utterly hilarious sound effects from its cast of quirky and eccentric characters.

Pilotwings 64 (probably and arguably) deserves to stand among the best games on the N64, and at the very least, it will likely offer a barrel of nostalgia-fuelled laughs over a few hours. It is a wonderful little gem that doesn't take itself too seriously, but also offers some solid (if imperfect) gameplay.

  1. This was a well designed game that was rushed a bit. Another month of development and this game could have been better than Mario (well, a month's a rough estimate).
  2. Simply flying around and admiring the scenery is an enjoyable enough pass-time. When you get serious with the game, it's demanding but fair, constantly pushing you further in mastering the various craft and the environment.
  3. A silky smooth wonder. The absolute freedom that can be yours in this game is unprecedented. With a large screen television and proper stereo amplification, Pilot Wings 64 truly takes us where no console game has ever gone before.
