Deadpool VR isn't some cheap knockoff: this is the real deal, thanks to expert voice acting from Neil Patrick Harris and phenomenal script writing to match. While combat can be somewhat repetitive, the level of gameplay variation always keeps you guessing, even if the narrative is on the tropey and mostly dispensable side. Despite it flaws, the merc with a mouth makes any dull spot that much more fun and engaging.

A fun, surprisingly lengthy and deep romp with everyone's favorite violent motormouth, Deadpool VR sends players careening around the Marvel Universe on a goofball mission that allows for equal parts bloody combat and surprisingly awesome watercooler moments. The combat is only as fun as you make it, but the non-stop barrage of jokes are top tier. The tone is right, largely due to a killer, irreverent performance from Neil Patrick Harris, so everything else falls into place.

There are some elements in the combat and battle design that still need polishing, but that doesn't stop Deadpool VR from becoming one of the most outstanding games in the format, one that truly understands the franchise it represents.

While the title may not contain the usual expected elements in a VR title, it helps the medium become more mature by being as long as an average non-VR title and by being more than a glorified shooting gallery. Except for the grappling hook issue, the game controls well and plays spectacularly. Combat is inventive and features diverse weaponry. This is a well thought-out title that fans of action games and Deadpool will enjoy, provided they haven't gotten tired of his antics yet.

While Deadpool himself may be a bit of a mixed bag in the game (and players who dislike the character entirely should probably avoid this title), Marvel’s Deadpool VR is a very entertaining way to recreate the character for a VR audience. Not necessarily a killer app on its own, Marvel’s Deadpool VR has enough fun showcasing the action, platforming, and worldbuilding of the VR space to be well worth checking out for gamers who already have the available tech. If you like Deadpool just as much as you like hacking enemies to pieces in video games, then Marvel’s Deadpool VR is the perfect title for you. For everyone else, it’s still a pretty fun experience that can be annoying at times, but is overall a bloody good time.

Marvel's Deadpool VR adds to a growing roster of great licensed superhero games that help prove VR games can be more than shallow tie-ins. Its kinetic combat system kept me engaged for the entire 10-hour campaign, and the alternate Deadpool variants with genuinely funny unique dialogue made replaying levels feel worthwhile rather than like padding. As the default Deadpool, however, Neil Patrick Harris’s performance delivers exactly what you'd hope for, and the reality show framing enhances the overall story rather than feeling gimmicky. If you’re up for dark, low-brow comedy and fourth-wall-breaking meta-humor, then this is easily the most complete and entertaining superhero VR experience since Batman: Arkham Shadow. Just make sure you're playing on Quest 3 to get the most out of its vibrant visuals.

Marvel's Deadpool VR is exactly the virtual-reality videogame dedicated to the Merc with a Mouth that we expected. Varied, fun in both dialogue and gameplay, and pleasing to see and hear. It's a work that convinces, yet at the same time doesn’t innovate in any way and will therefore mainly appeal to the many fans of the character from the House of Ideas. While we can say we’re satisfied with the final experience, we also feel compelled to express our disappointment at once again seeing so little courage in a medium like VR—a medium that should thrive on the “wow” effect. On that sense of wonder visible on the faces of those who try a VR headset for the first time, yet which unfortunately seems a bit neglected here. Sometimes it would be better to strive to create a less polished but more surprising title, rather than an excellent product with a more classic feel. In any case, Marvel's Deadpool VR is a work we feel confident recommending to superhero-comic fans and to anyone who has ever dreamed of wearing the red suit of the Merc with a Mouth.

Marvel's Deadpool VR is another great get for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. In keeping true to its source material, it's an absurd and exciting romp through the Marvel universe in the shoes of one of its most popular characters.

Don't expect smart puzzles and gadgets here, as this is an upfront, unapologetic massacre, and it's the new Quest game you'll want to show your friends this Christmas (as long as they're 18+, though there's a Kidpool mode, mind you).

If you approach the game with the right mindset, you can have a lot of fun. It’s just too bad that you have to make that decision rather than having the game do it for you.

Both the dialogue and gameplay of Marvel's Deadpool VR sometimes grated on me, but there are a number of impressive moments and the occasional strong joke that surprised me and made me laugh.

Fans of Deadpool will find their VR dream here. However, the game hinges on whether or not you find the characteristic humor appealing.

Ultimately, Marvel’s Deadpool VR could use a few patches – or perhaps even a release on an entirely different platform – before it plays its best, but even if everything were perfect, it’s just fine. It’s a good game, but it doesn't feel like the best a VR superhero game can be, and it didn’t make me feel like Deadpool. It’s middle-of-the-road, inoffensive, and contains silly fourth-wall breaking references to everything from Cheers to One Piece. If that sounds like a good time to you, then there’s nothing else quite like Deadpool VR.

Marvel’s Deadpool VR doesn’t hit the immersive highs as Batman: Arkham Shadows did last year, but it’s still a fun superhero romp from Oculus Studios. The developers at Twisted Pixel make great use of the Deadpool IP, and there’s no shortage of havoc to wreak if you’re just looking for an action-heavy VR experience.

Marvel's Deadpool VR is the latest Meta Quest 3 exclusive to hit our VR headsets, and it's exactly what fans of the anti-hero will want, and everything his haters will despise. From the humor to the action, I had a blast, but it isn't the must-play experience that previous Meta Quest exclusives were for that reason.

If you love Deadpool in general or just want to step into the pages of a Marvel comic, then Deadpool VR is worth experiencing. When it works, it’s joyful, absurd, and seriously fun. When it doesn’t, it’s weightless, repetitive, and oddly empty, so temper your expectations: this isn’t the next Iron Man VR or Arkham Shadow. It’s something stranger, sillier, and rougher around the edges - much like the Merc with a Mouth himself.

Deadpool VR isn’t going to change the world of virtual reality or convince many newcomers to give the medium a try, but it is a gruesomely good time with satisfying combat, plenty of parkour, and a surprising amount of variety across its roster of villain-focused levels. Those with a Meta Quest 3 gathering dust in dire need of a new exclusive will have a bloody good time here, even if its occasionally formulaic nature risks holding it back from greatness.

At its best, Deadpool VR matches up to the standard that Meta has set for its first-party VR releases – which makes the stumbles all the more disappointing. If you're someone who is already experienced in VR and loves Deadpool, the game is an easy recommendation even with those caveats. If you're just now looking to enter the VR market, though, maybe save this game for a rainy day. Maybe by the time you get around to it those pesky performance hiccups will be fixed.
