Quibbles aside, this is an outstanding piece of work by Camouflaj. Making a VR Batman game comparable to the flat versions is no small feat. You get all the elements of an Arkham game. There’s exploration, combat, detective work, stealth, and puzzle solving. While it may not have the scale of a flat Arkham game, it has an engaging story with unexpected twists as you try to track down who is the Rat King. What is also heartening is Camouflaj will continue to update the game with free content such as additional Challenge Maps. If you’ve yet to experience VR and are a big Batman fan, you’ll never get a better or more affordable opportunity to try it out with a Quest 3S/Batman bundle. Or really feel like Batman.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is a fully-fledged Arkham adventure through and through, and not to be missed if you have any affection for the Caped Crusader. It adds its own strengths to the famous action series and, aside from the template, is also a showcase title for virtual reality.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is a thrilling return to Gotham in VR, delivering immersive combat, clever gadgetry, and atmospheric exploration that rivals the series' best moments, even if some stealth segments fall short of the franchise’s usual polish.

It may not be the revolutionary VR title that unequivocally makes the platform become widely adopted, but I would absolutely count it among my favorite VR experiences alongside games like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is a great VR experience for Batman fans, featuring engaging gameplay and a well-crafted story. Despite bugs and frame-rate drops, it remains a must-have title on Meta Quest 3.

No game will bring you closer to actually being Batman, and exploring the world of Batman: Arkham Shadow is an absolute joy. Throw in a mixture of detective work, seriously satisfying combat and thrilling traversal, and you have one of the best VR games to date. The only problem? If you're prone to motion sickness, getting through it might be a struggle.

The knowledge that there's always another unlock just around the corner - and the tanalising locked-off areas you pass en rouge - ensures Shadow retains the fourth, invisible thing that held the Arkham series' other pillars together: the sense of forward momentum. [Issue#405, p.116]
