    Even without the platform versatility of its other versions Skulls of the Shogun is still among the best strategy games to grace iOS, and one that armchair generals shouldn't pass up.

    Skulls of the Shogun is a terrific game. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's a very stylish strategy game with enough content and bite to keep a solo player happy for a long time, and a great spread of multiplayer maps and options to satisfy those with a multiplayer urge

    Players looking for the chance to devise a plan and execute it perfectly may bristle at Skulls of the Shogun’s reliance on slow-moving chaos, but open-minded tacticians will find a sense of levity, flexibility, and improvisation not found in most turn-based strategy games.

    Like in chess, the core game mechanics are simple and deterministic, with no random element beyond one's opponent's reactions. Like in chess, the pieces are clearly differentiated with little overlap in ability. And like in chess, those pieces die swiftly when exposed -- pointlessly unless you ensure their deaths serve your greater purpose.

    But unlike in chess, one needn't plan everything 5 turns in advance to go far: merely knowing what can kill your units in the next turn or two is enough.Once you learn what you can get away with, the game becomes getting away with as much as possible. To be ruthless but not foolish. Otherwise you're playing on the same skill level as the AI, and this game utterly lacks the virtual carrot modern games use make that kind of gameplay enjoyable.

    That's actually the crux of what makes Skulls either Fun or Not Fun for each player. It lacks any crutch to support the enjoyment of those whom aren't disposed to moments of tactical genius... But likewise, there is no crutch to hinder the enjoyment of those whom are. Which makes it a priceless gem to the latter audience.    … Expand

    For the price I paid for it, this game wasn't worth it. The game, while very stylish and creative, the core gameplay just don't work realFor the price I paid for it, this game wasn't worth it. The controls are hit or miss at times, the missions are a bit too hard at times, but the biggest problem is the fact that I just am not having that much fun here. I keep playing it hoping for something to change up the monotony. It can be pretty repetitive and there's not much in the way of upgrading units or getting new units. I feel like I got ripped off paying 5 bucks for this game. However, if it had been 2-3 bucks I wouldn't feel as bad as I do. As it stands I just don't particularly like this game right now. Hopefully it can fix some of the overall boring things that are going against it in the future but that most likely won't happen till the sequel.… Expand

I also didn't like the units in the game that much, compared to the units I have commanded in the following strategy games. Having played fire emblem series, advance wars, front wars, and practically every other turn based strategy game out there which weren't memorable for me to recall, i feel the bar for fun and strategy on the iOS was set by Hero Academy. The part where this was better than Hero Academy was the single player story mode, but even with the catchy story the gameplay was not that fun. I doubt most of the reviewers who gave the game these extremely high ratings played the game through to the end. I forced myself to play this several for several weeks to justify my purchase and find a an unforseen value as described by the critics, but I felt my time was irrevocably wasted. I find it very suspicious that the 5 positive ratings have no associated reviews. Conclusion: Aesthetically pleasing but can new free movement turn-based gameplay can not overcome more entertaining, creative, and clever gameplay found in other turned based strategy games.… Expand
