With it's original style and finely honed gameplay, either Severed is a crazy diamond of a game or I'm tripping. Or both.

Severed by DrinkBox Studios is a captivating dungeon crawling RPG adventure with puzzles thrown into the mix for good measure. Think of it like Infinity Blade meets The Legend of Zelda with a dash of Etrian Odyssey. If you enjoy any of these genres or games, then Severed is for you.

Severed is just a game that's all-around cool. Its aesthetic is top-notch, its combat is deep and engaging.

Severed is the kind of game that I hope ends up on school and university “reading list.” Not because a particularly well made game (though it assuredly is), but also because it’s a masterpiece of theming and ambient storytelling. Games this evocative are rare and special indeed.

The good far outweighs the bad, of course. Severed is a fantastic adventure in more ways than one. Combat is satisfying and serves a genuine purpose, there’s lots to explore and revisit, and everything looks both wonderful and strange. In short, consider this one a must play.

A fantastically strange and unique first person adventure that manages to make touchscreen controls seem fresh and interesting again.
  9. With great game mechanics, unique artwork and tough to master gameplay, Severed is well worthy of your time.

Severed starts out as a very interesting modern version of classical dungeon crawlers. With increasing time, however, the game loses the pace and starts to be somewhat tedious.

Great first impression fades away dispelled by primitive run-of-the-mill dungeon designs and the fact that instead of raising the difficulty level by clever enemy designs the game just throws more foes and buffs at you. [13/2016, p.82]

I found it to be the perfect adventure for playing on the subway to work. I've actually had a few people ask what I'm playing since it's so visually rich. There's a lot of depth in the combat, and the exploration takes you through diverse environments and a dark but ultimately uplifting story. Full Review »
