Thankfully, Nintendo left the perfect multi-player aspect of SSB for the n64 alone, and simply tweaked to perfection the single player mode. but i have 2 gripes about Melee. I have tried it myself; just randomly mashing buttons while fighting, and I won by a pretty hefty margin. But Melee has a whole truckload of pluses on it's side. Smooth graphics, responsive controls, an almost satanic amount of play modes and challenges, an even more satanic amount of things for you too unlock (i swear, all those friggin trophies will take twice as long as all the gaps in THPS2), nice music (cept' for that damn DK rap), diverse charcaters, oh... and samus is there, so that's pretty much a reason alone to buy this game). just my 2 copper pieces. Super Smash Brothers Melee is a great Nintendo fighter featuring Nintendo's famous exclusive characters. (mostly, at least). And these characters are very different from one another and fight differently. And the enemy A.I. can be adjusted to 9 different levels, too. I loved the insane action and how some many things could happen onscreen without any slowdown. I wished that there was more interacting between backgrounds and characters, however, and that sometimes it gets zoomed out too far. The game also had other "minigame" style gameplay. Event mode was a nice touch, a fun way to unlock characters and cool-but-not-required trophies, but sometimes the difficulty is insanely hard. Luckily this doesn't affect the mainstream game. Super Smash is full of tiny features, from trophies to the Lottery to an index for bonus boints that you get at the end of a battle. This combined with awesome 2-4 player and 1 player that isn't bad either, makes SSB:M a great buy. Expand

I do have a few gripes with this game, however. The visuals are quite nice, but some of the detailing and scaling in some of the levels is a bit low quality, like how the F-Zero machines in Mute City and Big Blue look exactly like the machines in F-Zero X for the N64. I believe the camera mode was rather poorly done, because the controls are wonky as heck and you really can't access this in the middle of a match (which is what Brawl did and I am thankful for that improvement). I also thought the process of unlocking new characters could be a little tedious, such as having to play in hundreds of VS. matches to get someone like Mr. Game and Watch. Granted, the gameplay is fun so it does render this point pretty moot, but if you're not all that into this game, then you might feel bored by having to do this. Admist these minor problems, the game is still great. It's addicting, accessible, and intense. Great for both the hardcore gamer, but also good for casual gamers who want to try out a fighting game. Those that are scoring this game less than a 5 are simply trolling, or spewing ignorance because this game is too simple in its control scheme. I highly recommend this game for your Gamecube collection, even if you're not really into this sort of game. Expand

One of the main reasons to own the Gamecube, Melee combines both casual and hardcore elements in its fighting that will inspire players to come back to it for a good time. Characters from many of Nintendo's franchises collide in this epic to help gamers settle age long disputes: "Who would win in a fight: Peach or Samus?"

It’s remarkable how Masahiro Sakurai and his team at HAL Laboratories were able to make such a massive leap forward from the original to this one, and in such a short period of time at that. Melee was the reason for people to grab a GameCube, and it became the highest selling game for the console at over 7 Million units. In every single facet is this game an improvement from the original. The fighting mechanics, the visuals, the content. Melee’s got it all and then some. There’s a good reason why people still fondly look back on Melee and still play it to this very day.

Melee’s presentation is the most obvious upgrade. It’s amazing how in just two short years the N64 original can look so dated in comparison. The character models look great, there are lots of neat little environmental details, and it all runs at a pristine 60 FPS with no hiccups. The game also supports a fantastic soundtrack full of great remixes and original compositions that remain staples to the series to this day. Sure, there are dated aspects to the character models and some parts of the game look kind of gross, but those are very minor issues compared to how much care went into this game.

More importantly, though, gameplay has been upgraded considerably. It’s functionally the same as the original, where you pick a Nintendo icon and duke it out using a few buttons to pull off different maneuvers and knock opponents off the screen. The fighting feels much faster and smoother, demanding better responses from players. It’s a much more hectic experience, and in multiplayer it’s an absolute blast. Out of the entire Smash Bros. line-up, Melee is the most difficult to master. This is a much more competitive Smash Bros., and tournament players have been able to pull off many crazy exploits that even the developers never intended.

The Character roster has more than doubled, ranging from weird, unexpected choices like Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch, to characters that had been considered for the first game but couldn’t for various reasons like Bowser and Peach. It’s a really solid roster, even if a good chunk of them are clones. Some also have pretty steep requirements just for you to obtain (Mewtwo), but half of the fun was being surprised by an approaching challenger and battling them in order to add them to the roster.

Melee offers a wealth of content for you to soak in. For starters, there are more single player options. We have the returning classic mode, but this time the character battles are randomized to keep things fresh. There’s the ever popular Adventure Mode where you run through different stages based on various Nintendo properties. While the “adventure” concept of this mode teeters off halfway through, it’s still a fun, novel concept that really should be explored again in the future. We have the returning Break the Targets mini-game where each character has their own custom target stages that fully utilize their abilities. There’s Event Mode where you have different themed challenges to take on. All Star Mode pits you against every character in the game with limited health items. Melee also introduces the concept of trophies that you can collect from the different game modes or purchase with the coins you earn.

Of course, multiplayer is back with a vengeance. Smash has always been best with friends and this is some of the best multiplayer action on the GameCube. There are more varieties of game modes to choose from like Coin Battles, Tiny Melee, Sudden Death, Stamina, a full fledge tournament mode. You name it. In case it wasn’t obvious, Melee is positively bursting with content, and is the kind of game that is meant to be played for years on end, not just because of all the things you can unlock, but because of how timeless and fun the core structure of the game is. Super Smash Bros. Melee is not just a great fighting/party game, but it’s just one of my favorites period. Even with other Smash Bros. games that come along it is still worth dusting off from time to time.

This game is just freakin' fun , especially with a bunch of friends. I mean beating the crap out of your friends was never so much fun!! Some of the levels are annoying (like Samus' stage, Stupid lava), but other than that, this game is a true classic brawl, and I love it!! ;)

It's a fun game, and much better than the Nintendo 64 release. It isn't as good as some of the newer games, but it is definitely fun. The graphics aren't top-notch, and there are some exploits used widely by "hardcore players" but otherwise, it's great.

This game is fun! I like it a lot more than I used to. The graphics are okay for the GameCube. The character selection is great. I like the Adventure mode but I liked SSE in Brawl better. And this game introduced A LOT of stuff to the series. Super Smash Bros Melee is a great SSB game and I would recommend it.

This is one of my favourite games on the Nintendo GameCube, and the one I haven't played very much of but got back to it recently, Super Smash Bros. My older copy stopped working, but I was LUCKY enough to find one in perfect condition for JUST $50 USD. I recommend you go to every single Video Game Exchange Store in your local area before taking one step ahead to Amazon, eBay, etc. And if you find one for $50 or less, DEFINITELY pick it up ESPECIALLY if it's in great condition. You just can't leave it behind.

I enjoyed it especially with friends . I liked the gameplay and the mechanics are great. The knocking-out-the-stage mechanic is my favorite. The solo adventure is also good. This game is far from a masterpiece but its great set of characters, the feeling of adventure, and its minimal amount of microtransactions easily makes it a great game.

So much nostalgia around Smash Bros and 1000s of hours spent on it in my childhood. It's hard to go back to it now the burnout on the game has lasted over a decade. No doubt this game had huge influence at the time and is probably the game that's seen the most organized tournaments outside of esports.

Speaking from a game viewpoint, this definately impoved over the First super smash. More characters/maps, better graphics, and interesting quirks. Unfortunately, the complex controller of the Nintentdo Gamecube ruined this game for me, the reason why I rate this a 7. Anyone who doesn't mind the Gamecube controller will like this game, anyone who doesn't, well, don't bother.

Not a bad game, but it's my least favorite smash, most likely because it's so overrated. It's impossible for just anyone to get in the game unless they can pull of complex "advanced techniques" that are really glitches used to cheat. It's impossible for just anyone to get in the game unless they can pull of complex "advanced techniques" that are really glitches used to cheat. Thanks, ratchet competitive community. 1/4 of the characters are clones, including Ganondorf being a clone of Captain Falcon (making a clone is worse than keeping a clone). The game is terrible unbalanced, having one character that's far better than the rest (Fox). Items appear way too frequently on high settings, and despawn too quickly. The bottom screen hitboxes are too high, causing you to die before getting to optimal range to grab right on to the ledge, and the game is too fast. People praise Melee for being fast, but they shouldn't. You have barely any room for error unless you have the reflexes better than a cat. Adventure mode is another thing that's praised, but really, its nice going through the worlds of characters and all, but due to the lack of variety, it gets REALLY repetitive since you have to complete it with all the characters for all the trophies. The game is filled with game-breaking glitches such as the one that makes Master Hand playable and the "black hole" glitch. Quite possibly the worst of all, to take screenshots require way too many blocks on your memory card, and you need a controller in the 4th slot, that can't control a character, just to do so.
It has good graphics for a Gamecube game at least.
Just because Brawl patched the "advanced" exploits and is slower so anyone can enjoy it, the game gets so much hate just for those two things, when almost everything else in the game is an improvement from Melee.

    6.5/10, but I can't give .5's.

This game is just... boring. It's kinda fun with friends, but it gets old very, very fast. The whole thing feels put together by a kid who forgot to take his Ritalin, and the "secrets" are so lame they aren't worth unlocking. I really tried to like this one, but I much prefer Virtua Fighter 4.
