My favorite video game. A perfect artwork that perfectly offers what you are looking for. This saga is underestimated by many people, and does not get the success it deserves. A real shame. Hopefully a game of this generation will be half as good as this game is.

This was one hell of a debut for Retro Studios, especially with the game's troubled development. It's amazing that it still turned out to be one kickass game--the music, the lonely atmosphere, the fun combat, the still stellar graphics. Truly timeless.

The game's worlds are all very different and they are all alive with different kinds of enemies and secrets throughout the world. Boss battles are difficult, but can be beaten as long as the player knows the weakness through scanning the enemy. Backtracking is a large part of this game, but it provides the player with a way more in depth experience. Overall, this game is the perfect representation of what single player games should be like. Begun my play through for a few hours, and I was really impressed. The visuals were stunning for a game made in 2002, and the core exploration, item collection and great boss battles were still there in a 3D environment with 60 FPS. The only let down is the controls, you are gonna need to get used to them for a bit.

    Overall - 96/100

95/100 one of the better games I've played. The atmosphere in this game is phenomenal. Even without twin stick controls for a shooter (more of an exploration game) it holds up well in the control scheme. I had one problem with a portion of the game toward the end, but still an amazing experience. Glad I jumped on this one and decided to it. A great game hidden in my backlog.

In 2017, the game is still spectacular, the mechanics, the feeling of being alone on a planet to explore, music combined with the environment recreates one of the most invasive feelings of not knowing what to do. The small details of development make the game one of the masterpieces of video games. Congratulations to Retro Studios for creating this masterpiece.

The mechanics work amazingly well in first-person and for Nintendo's first FPS made in house, that uses a Nintendo IP, it translates very well over.

Only issue is controls, which haven't aged the greatest and could work better nowadays.

I highly recommend this to be the first game to play on a GameCube or Wii if you can play the Metroid Prime Trilogy Collection.

Metroid Prime might be the best and most perfect Metroid Game ever created, transforming Metroid from a side scrolling 2D platformer, to a story driven first person shooter set in a universe filled with lore.
If anything, just look back on the multiple series that failed to make the jump to 3D properly. Even major series like Megaman and Castlevania had a bad time trying to jump to 3D.

If anything, just look back on the multiple series that failed to make the jump to 3D properly. Even major series like Megaman and Castlevania had a bad time trying to jump to 3D.
But Metroid Prime did not just push the series to 3D, rather it springballed Metroid into perfection.
This is the Metroid Prime retrospective.

I streamed this game as it was and still is one of my favorite games of all time. I had not played it for many years though, so I wanted to see if it still held up today.
The first thing that you will realize playing this game is how cool the presentation is. On the menu itself, it is the inside of a Metroid. And when the game begins, you the player are shown the graphical prowess of the Gamecube. A distress call, the vacuum of space, Samus’s ship appears, and bam, in all her glory, Samus. Gorgeous graphics and a stunning show for Metroid fans who waited many years for a new game. But due to the new nature of the gameplay and 3D space, players would have to get used to a new way to move and control Samus.

One of the biggest critiques that can be leveraged against the game is the controls. Unfortunately, they are very archaic and they pre-date the use of dual thumb sticks that many First Person Shooters use today. The controls caused me many times to move in a direction I didn’t want to, and I constantly felt like they were tank controls. The controls would have been improved with a much faster turn rate, but they are still workable. The controls however offer the ability to manually aim, which is a massive improvement over Super Metroid’s 8-way direction. A lock on feature was included making it a breeze to battle, move, and dodge while shooting. Atop this, the controller is utilized with the heads-up display on Samus’s visor which then offers players no confusion when swapping weapons and visors.
With that out of the way, as I was playing the game I was still in awe of the graphics. It’s hard to think this game came out 20 years ago. And though it can be seen, especially with the lack of smoothing and jagged edges. However, this game came out only 1 year after the GameCube had released. Every area looks fantastic and is immersive. In the initial space station, steam fogs Samus’s visor. The graphical effects were stunning, seeing huge dead mad scientist experiments, tubes filled with genetically altered creatures, and finally confronting a massive boss all contributed to the immersion.

From the planet itself filled with foliage, water effects and waterfalls, Chozo Architecture, and overgrown temples. The Magma interior of the planet filled with Lava, tunnels, and fire-based creatures. The snow fields of Phendrana drifts, while snow falls and has the player crunching snow under their feet: fantastic. The space pirates research facility makes you feel claustrophobic while surrounded by botched experiments and any bit of lore you could want to learn about. The mines where operations are conducting appear industrial and the exact opposite of how the Chozo were living. And finally, the interior of the Meteor impact crater, which appears straight out of alien. And while exploring these fantastic looking areas comes fantastic ambient music. Most notably, Phendrana drifts, which is highly recommended in the video game ost world. Each area contains fitting musical tracks, some call backs to super Metroid, but all the music sounds fantastic and accompanies this massive adventure.

All of the environments are a joy to explore, which is the name of the game. As I went through the game I made good use of the scan visor, which offers players the ability to scan things and learn more about them. From enemies to the most mundane of things, the visor assisted in learning lore that no Metroid fans had access to. But the game is truly about exploring and learning about new creatures.

Going backwards in time 20 years this game was a fantastic joy to play yet again, and even with an archaic control scheme it was still not only playable but greatly enjoyable. I loved re-exploring Metroid Prime, re-learning the lore, encountering challenging bosses, and enjoying the music along with the areas of the alien planet.
Is it perfect? No, but is it a Masterpiece, absolutely.

This is certainly one of the best games I've ever played. I didn't play it when it came out and only played it recently. I think it is the second best game on the GameCube (second only to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker). My only complaint, and it is a small one, is that I thought Samus moved a little too slowly.

The combat is the only area where the age of this game starts to show a little bit, but even then it's still a lot of fun. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So what can I say about Metroid Prime that hasn't already been said?

The answer is nothing. Everything that can be said about Metroid Prime has already been said by people with more credibility than I. But this is my first review and I want to do this game justice.

Metroid Prime released on the Gamecube in 2002, is a First person adventure game developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo. The trilogy port to the Wii in 2009, included revamped controls, bug/exploit fixes, a higher resolution and an extra maneuver featured originally only in Prime 3. That's not to say Prime 1 needed these features or tweaks, as it was already a masterclass in game design from the moment Nintendo and Retro Studios decided to put their stamp of approval onto it.

From the way the game masks its loading screens with doors, to the way the music bends your ear, to the way freezing an enemy with the ice beam only to shatter it with a missile feels. Everything in this game tries to maximize your fun and immersion. Whether you're someone who wants deep lore and a story, or someone who just wants to blast their way to the next section of the game, Metroid Prime has you covered. The story is told mostly through scanning things in the environment with your scan visor. These could be enemies, relics left behind by the Chozo, or things as simple as grass in the environment. Everything serves a purpose here and nothing is wasted.

The transition Metroid Prime makes from 2D to 3D is seamless. It plays like a Metroid game through your own eyes. For the first time, you are thrust into the Power Suit and given a chance to see exactly what Samus sees. You'll often notice the visor getting steamed up, rained on, or seeing flashes of light reflect Samus' face in her visor, reminding you who you are and snapping you back in at a moments notice. The game also affords you many different power-ups, from beam upgrades, to visors, suits, missile expansions and morph ball abilities.

While we're on the morph ball. This thing is insanely cool. Even going back to play the game 18 years later, the physics always seem to feel unbelievably good. I don't think Retro could have made the morph ball function better.

As far as sound design goes, this is another area where Prime REALLY shines. The atmosphere some of these tracks give you is truly spectacular. Most people will name drop Magmoor Caverns and it's not hard to see why. The game uses many unconventional sounds to make music at times. But it is never jarring. It always seems to try to dig into your ear and try to live in your brain. The music pushes you inch by inch. But never too forcefully. My personal favorites have to be the Meta Ridley boss theme and the Phendrana Drifts theme.

Speaking of Phendrana, the game features a multitude of various locations and doesn't force any of them to overstay their welcome. Swamps, crashed underwater space stations, a snow covered space pirate facility, a lava soaked cave system running under all of it, and a huge mine full of a newly discovered element. Phazon.

Phazon is a pretty important plot point to the game. But needless to say, this stuff is DANGEROUS. Just touching it will make Samus wish she was wading through a pool of lava without her Varia Suit.

Once you have all 12 of the artifacts in the game and a way to deal with Phazon. You'll be thrust into the underbelly of Tallon IV, navigating a spire like cave to come face to face with Metroid Prime itself. I won't spoil too much here. But this boss fight is RELENTLESS, And it is one of few final bosses I deem worthy of being a final boss. It makes you fight for every inch. Forces you to use everything you've learned to conquer it. And when you finally do. You're met with a glimpse into Samus' future. The game closes with a clear time and percentage screen, encouraging you to go back and do better. But that's the genius of Metroid Prime. This is a game that wants you to master it. The game isn't overly demanding of you, it asks you use your noodle, it's crazy good fun, and it isn't very long. Going back and playing again is a total joy. And if you're looking for a challenge you can always bump the game up to a higher difficulty setting.

This is one of the defining games of my generation and I think everyone can find something to enjoy here. Its visceral beauty, its hauntingly poetic melodies, its masterful and thoughtful game play and concepts, or its plethora of variety in monsters, puzzles, rewards and platforming.

To sum up my experience to you the only way I know how. You are doing yourself a massive disservice to not play this game. This game gets my highest praise and my ultimate recommendation. If you haven't played Metroid Prime before or are considering delving into the franchise for the first time, please. Play this game.

I was 6 when this game came out, and needless to say, did not have the mental capacity to beat it at that time. I just could not figure out how to progress, or think outside of the box. Still, I liked the graphics and enemy designs, so I'd wonder aimlessly until I found a way forward or at least, a missile upgrade.

Playing it in 2021, after multiple playthroughs and knowing this game like the back of my hand, (preferably on the wii these days) The game just does everything right for me. For one, the ambient music is top notch, instilling wonder, achievement and fear with each drop and melody. The graphics have aged pretty damn well, and while the shooting isn't the best, the exploration and backtracking are pretty good. If you don't like backtracking, this isn't the game for you. If you only plan to play it once, it might not be the game for you either.

Metroid Prime to me, is a game that gets better every single time I play it. It's a big game, easy to get lost in, and easy to waste time. The more familiar I become with it, the more I understand the layout, the quickest routes, and the best order to grab optional upgrades. I'm not a speedrunner or anything, but the first time I beat the game, I had over 20 hours logged, maybe 30. The last time I beat it, it took me 6 and I had 91% completion.

To me, it's one of the best games ever made. If you've never played this game and you're tired of linear shooters, endlessly bloated open world games with hundreds of waypoints and infinite handholding, or just looking for something different, it's time to play Metroid Prime. There's little handholding, almost no cutscenes, no interruptions, no glitches, no bugs, and no microtransactions. Only cons I would nitpick about: First playthrough can be tedious, combat is far too easy, and occasionally backtracking can be a bit rough near the end. Still, there's nothing quite like this or the second game, other than Super Metroid.

Never had a game so deftly weaved the atmospheric isolation of past Metroid games with stunning modern graphics (which still hold up to this day), an intuitive combat system that evolved alongside a progressing difficulty-curve, unmatched first-person platforming level-design, and genuinely unique and creative puzzles to produce an iconic Sci-Fi Adventure that immersed you in a beautiful and strange alien world begging to be explored.

Naturally the classic "Metroidian" sense of progression and discovery returns, with plenty of weapon modes, suit modifications, and other enchantments to find tucked away in hidden corners and ledges "just" out of reach for a future, more powerful you to return to. The feelings of achievement and satisfying growth are well-earned and do the series justice, if not reaching new heights. This will always be a series rooted in themes of discovery and exploration.

The gorgeous art direction and surprisingly incredible score only engross you further into the gameplay. While light on story, what the game manages to achieve by pure virtue of its atmosphere and attention to even the smallest details - like catching a glimpse of Samus' eyes reflected back at you in her visor or dew forming on the same visor in foggy areas - transport you directly into the world, more eager to solve its mysteries the further you trek through it's rain-soaked jungles, haunting ruins, molten caverns, icy plateaus and derelict outposts.

    Truly a Masterpiece.

Even the most criticized hunt after the artifacts during the game are well and in some cases creative implemented. The music fits the game perfectly. Phendrana drifts and the sunken fregate are becoming even more atmospheric, thanks to the beautyful and mysterious soundtrack they have. The scanning is the key element in the game to explore the world and if you consequent make use of it you get interesting and useful information.
For example you can scan in Phendrana drifts the leftovers of a corpse in a cryo cell. These leftovers are from an elite pirate, which you will fight later in the game. Another example is, that you will get detailed information about the omega pirate, a boss in the game. You have the opportunity to find out, which weakness he has and what kind of weapons and moves he will use in the fight.
The last boss fight is always a highlight for me and it is still one of the best endboss fights.
These elements in combination make Metroid Prime great, even today.

What at first glance looks like a sci-fi shooter is actually a meticulously crafted platforming, puzzling adventure where shooting is just one of the myriad of ways through which you can interact with the world. Metroid Prime brings it's world to life through it's inquisitive, eerie, and sometimes groovy music, beautifully constructed and unforgiving environments, subtle yet ingenious story telling, and brilliant level design. Metroid Prime puts you right behind Samus Aran's visor which is an exhilarating experience that is at times downright horrifying in all of the best ways. With a plethora of items to collect, enemies and bosses to fight, secretes to unlock and puzzles to solve, Metroid Prime keeps you right at the edge of your seat for all 15+ hours of it's story. Although it might not be as long as most current AAA games, what's there is as good as gaming gets. Metroid Prime still stands up against the best modern titles today and in a world where appraising a video games greatness is largely subjective, Metroid Prime arguably has it's hat in the ring for being one of the best video games of all times. I could not recommend it any more. Expand

The boss battles are also very enjoyable, and the landscapes and level designs in Metroid Prime are breathtaking. Those are what I thought made Metroid Prime so excellent besides the way it was revoulotionary for a 2D side scrolling series to become a FPA. The landscapes were just beautiful. I would give Metroid Prime a perfect score, however it was very very close to being perfect. There were at least two flaws which are minior and basically just me nit picking. I know it's not worth mentioning but I see reviewing as pointing out the good and bad even if it's just nit picking. The one flaw I had with Metroid Prime was some of the load times. The loading screen when you enter an elevator to go to a different location. I think they could've done better work on that. Then there was these doors that wouldn't open for a few seconds even after you shot them. Of course those doors are a lot worse in Metroid Prime 3. So I do not give perfect scores away, but Metroid Prime was very very close to being perfect in my opinion. Those load times are all that held it back. Haha. Not near what I thought it would be, but still a good game. For everyone who said great gfx, you must only play gamecube games. Plus the guy who said something about going back to your Xbox... Guess he was too stupid to read that the other guy said something about Outcast for PC.

Would have scored a perfect 10 if not for the random lockups. A truly engrossing game. The visuals are great and the puzzles provide enough challenge without getting annoying. The controls take a minute to adjust to, but once you get them it becomes natural, and I think any problem people are having with the controls really stems from the GC controller rather than the game itself. All in all, a great game that lives up to the legacy of the original. Expand

The long running Metroid series has been highly regarded amongst gamers for two decades and this update continues the trend of providing quality gaming. The long running Metroid series has been highly regarded amongst gamers for two decades and this update continues the trend of providing quality gaming. In much the same way that Ocarina of Time translated the Zelda series into 3D whilst retaining the series uniqueness Retro Studios have taken the 2D formula of previous instalments to the next level.

Metroid Prime is an action/adventure game that is unusually played from a first-person perspective and takes place just after the original Metroid on the NES. The game opens with bounty hunter Samus Aran on the trail of space pirates intent on using a substance known as Phazon to create a genetically engineered army capable of taking over the galaxy. Following an explosion in which she narrowly escapes with her life she finds herself trapped on an eerie and isolated planet without many of her abilities.

Once on the planet the gameplay itself also follows the template laid down by the 2D iterations. The focus is largely on exploring the massive, uncharted world around you. As you do you gradually regain abilities such as the Morph Ball and Dash Boots that allows access to previously inaccessible areas that provide teasing hints as to the planets history. With useful signposting along the way it is only rarely that this exploration can become frustrating.

Combat itself also takes inspiration from Ocarina of Time. A simple lock-on mechanic allows the player to target individual enemies and removes the need for twin analogue controls. Once targeted enemies can be blasted with a variety of weapons although many are weaker or stronger against certain types.

With its superb graphics and haunting score Metroid Prime became an instant classic on release and remains amongst the best games of its generation.

I like this game. It has great graphics and unique gameplay, although I found the game confusing at times because there is a lot going on within the game.

  1. It looks fantastic, it plays fantastic (the best usage of the GameCube controller to date), it sounds fantastic, and darn it, it is just fun to play.

It doesn't matter if you've never played a Metroid game before - Prime will kick your ass and unrelentingly own you. [A+; Jan 2003, p.62]
  3. It oozes with so much addictiveness that the storyline plays second fiddle and reminds you of a time when gameplay was an integral part of gaming. Put simply, this is one of the best games I have played in a long, long time. [Grade = A+]
