The controls are a little confusing at first but like any other game they are easy to adapt to. The only real "problem" I think there is is that there is no multiplayer although I'm not so sure if that would work too well considering the controls.... PS: A lot of Halo fans are saying that this game was overhyped......so you're saying that Halo wasn't overhyped? I own Halo and it is an above average fps game but it's nothing earth shattering. Retro Studios prove themselves to be masters of presentation with this game. The graphics are technically incredible, but it is the art-direction which is truly awe-inspiring. The sound design is crisp and powerful, and the score is an atmospheric mix of organic and electronic elements. The gameplay is where this game truly stands out as one of the games, if not THE game, of this generation. All (well, most) of the classic Metroid tropes are transposed to a three dimensional world wonderfully. The morphball can be rolled through narrow passages too small to otherwise traverse, or rolled back and forth on massive halfpipes; combat is both intuitive and intense, Samus having her standard power beam and missiles, along with three additional beam upgrades and four beam-missile combos; the environments all contain numerous secrets and hidden areas, ensuring that the ubiquitous Metroid backtracking is fully in place. Exploration, in fact, is in my opinion the most engaging and rewarding facet of the game. A new addition to the Metroid formula comes in the form of Samus's four visors, which change the way you interect with the world around you. You begin the game with the combat visor and the scan visor. The first represents the standard viewing mode in which you can make good use of Samus's arsenal of weapons, but it is this second visor which gives Prime it's trump card. The scan visor allows the player to scan almost every conceivable element of the game world -- items, enemies, technology, landscape, Space Pirate computer terminals, the list goes on -- and retrieve images and data which are then displayed on the screen whilst the game action pauses. Not only do these entries provide necessary clues to solve the game's numerous puzzles, but they are fascinating in their own right. Scans also serve to slowly unveil the story behind the game, a feature which, while not entirely original, is by far the most impressive and fully-developed example of this style of narrative (Metroid's scans are on a different plain entirely from Resident Evil's hackneyed 'files', for instance). All of these game elements -- graphics, music, sound design, scanning -- combine to create what is the most immersive videogame world I have ever entered into. Everything feels genuine and real -- through the windows of elevator shafts you are given tantalisingly brief glimpses of the site you will ultimately reach in the game's last few minutes; scanning Space Pirate computer terminals will reveal logs of their biological experiments, troop orders and security protocols, and in one memorable instance even morale-boosting propaganda. From the game's electrifying opening sequence onboard a seemingly deserted frigate right through to the incredible climactic battle, Metroid Prime oozes style, atmosphere, maturity, intelligence, and, most importantly, fun. It is both lengthy and challenging; it never outstays its welcome. Metroid Prime is the most immersive game I have ever had the joy of experiencing, and the best title currently available on the GameCube. I haven't played a better game this generation. Suberb beyond words. A modern masterpiece, a future classic. Buy it. Now. Expand

This game is great. The amazing gameplay, graphics, atmospheres, puzzles, bosses, and music more than make up for any other flaws. To all you morons giving this game reviews of 0 because you think it's "an average FPS" or "not as good as Halo", you have to remember that it's not like most FPS's. It's a Metroid game, and that means exploration and puzzles.

Holy S##T, this is one of the best titles out for the GC as of 2002. Metroid prime lives up to all the hype, but I can say the controller for me is a little iffy. Nothing will compare to the mouse, and the keyboard for fps controls, but nevertheless its absolutely justifiable to buy a Game Cube for this title.

Metroid Prime is arguably the single best game for the Game Cube. Everything about the game, from start to finish, is well thought out and masterfully executed. Its lack of multiplayer modes, for example, is intentional. One would not expect the next Legend of Zelda game to feature a deathmatch, and Prime is more akin to the Zelda series than to, say, Halo. Make no mistake: Metroid Prime is no mere point-and-shoot bloodfest, however entertaining they can be. It is a game of survival and exploration. It's the type of game that you pick up to kill 20 minutes and end up playing an hour. And for the first time in the series, you realy feel as if you are the one delving into magma-filled caverns or trudging across the frozen plains. It is a completely engrossing adventure that grabs hold of you and fills you with a sense of both wonder and dread. -EJN Expand

    - Controls: The controls in Metroid Prime work over all very well throughout the game. The lack of manual aiming without the R buttons is solved via the use of the lock on feature. Negatives
-Replay Value: One might not be compelled to play this prolonged adventure again, although if they do they will realize just how excellent the game was when they'd played it the first time. It still gets a perfect score because I can't think of another Nintendo game worth of 10/10 except for StarFox64, Kirby 64, or maybe even SSBB (with the minus mod, of course). The game looks great and plays better than any other console FPS game I've been forced to endure, so it already is miles above Halo and CoD. It also is a truly immerse game with well constructed environments. The story is, much like a Valve game, in the background and never in your face with obnoxious cutscenes. You can gather more information with your Scan Visor if you want to know more about what's going on, you can speculate it and just shoot a bunch of dudes, or you can use a walkthrough and ruin the experience for yourself entirely. But the story all "do, don't show" and it works incredibly well. But, as I said, I have to criticize it somewhere. I think the lack of a hard mode from the beginning is an annoyance. you have to beat the game first before you can use it and that isn't cool. Why should I have to replay a game for difficulty changes? Shouldn't I just be allowed to pick the setting I want whether it be the one that holds my hand or kicks me in the balls? Also, some scans are a 1-shot-deal in that you can only scan a dude at ONE point in the game and if you miss it, that's it. I get that for Boss Monsters because you'll scan them anyway to figure out a weakness. But I think it was Ice Shriek bats are in only one place for the first time you pass through it and then they are gone forever. That seems like a rather dick move on Retro Studio's part. But the good HORRENDOUSLY outweighs the bad. If you are, for some reason, just now getting a gamecube and you don't have this in your collection, I have one of two things for you to do. First, get your head examined. If you are mentally healthy, you have no excuse to not get this game. If you are, for some reason, not mentally healthy, then go back to wasting hours of your time playing Halo Reach and enjoy your generic shooter **** Expand

This game is truly how an adventure game and an FPS should be, free exploration in a beautiful world that captures you with its stunning visuals, catchy and breathtaking music, little intricacies in the level design that impress the players, and complex and thought-provoking puzzles. It's just you and the huge planet that you explore, with the frequent enemies and boss fights. It's easily understood as to why the Metroid series is truly one of Nintendo's, no, video games in general, finest work. Gameplay: You're Samus Aran, and the game is in her perspective. You see through Samus's helmet, and have a gun with unlimited ammo ready to shoot at everything in sight. Shoot with A, jump with B for some clever platforming, lock on with L, move the gun up and down with R, etc. The gameplay controls very well. On your quest, you will come across items such as Missles, Grapple Beams, etc, which all add to your arsenal of weapons you can carry, making enemies you had trouble earlier with, easier to beat. The boss fights in this game are truly fantastic. From the vicious Flaaghra to the sadistic Ridley, these bosses will pose a huge amount of challenge and fun. Throughout your adventure, you will shoot down indigenous life, space pirates, well designed bosses as you course through the depths of Tallon IV. Going through the magma filled Magmoor Cavern, the cold, sub-zero climate of Phendrana Drifts, to even the Space Pirate's mines (and many more), this game will take hours to complete. After you finish all of that, you will defeat the final boss, Metroid Prime, and save Tallon IV from the corruption of Phazon. The morph ball feature is also well transferred from the game's 2D counterpart, even something that shocked me, the grappling beam, was very well implemented. With perfect controls, perfect level design, and perfect boss battles, gameplay gets a 10/10. Music/Sounds: Metroid Prime features some of the best soundtracks I have heard in a video game. The music in the game contain atmospheric pieces, and catchy ones as well. I cannot begin to tell how many times I've listened to the peaceful Phendrana Drifts music just on its own with headphones. It's music from the heavens. The sounds are also great and realistic (firing your gun, small explosions, enemy grunts, etc) 10/10. Story. The story is marvelously told through the use of optional lore and Pirate data that can be scanned throughout the game. Read up the wiki on the story if you want to know what it is. It's actually quite interesting. The lore and Pirate data also give a very large chunk of the story through the Space Pirates' perspectives and even mention some things in the past that transpired in the planet. Truly a genius way of telling a story. 10/10 Overall Metroid Prime is quite possibly one of the best games you'll come across. What Super Mario 64 did for the Mario series, and what Ocarina of Time did for the Zelda series, Metroid Prime did for the Metroid series. It's a 3D FPS adventure at is finest, and it's my personal favorite game of all time. If you haven't played this game, I highly recommend you pick it up and give it a go. This game receives a perfect 10/10 score. Expand

I really love this game. There's an intense atmosphere, the graphics is one of the best in Gamecube, the gameplay is awesome and the soundtrack... is amazing. The all planet Tallon IV is huge, with good designs and the boss are the biggest i ever seen in a metroid game.

Perfectly captures the essence of previous Metroid games. The graphics are so amazing that at some points, the game looks even better than most Wii titles. Samus controls so well that you actually feel like you're the one wearing the Power Suit. The music is incredible and is always changing. For example, the Chozo Ruins music is a quiet tune until you get the Morph Ball. From that point onwards, the music changes to a catchy tune that I loved. The replay value is great, since there are, in traditional Metroid fashion, multiple endings that you get depending on your item collection rate. The boss battles are few, but very satisfying. The difficulty is perfect...what else can I say? If I keep talking about the positives of this game, my review won't fit into the page, so I will end it by saying this: If you don't have it, buy it. Metroid prime seems like a huge game, but really it's small. What makes it feel so big is the brilliant sense of adventure and discovery. You enter an erea, find the correct path through puzzles and platforming(and of course, fighting some local life forms). When you clear an erea you usually get a new weapon or gadget that allows you to visit areas that were blocked before so. It becomes a sort of a giant puzzle, where you must fit in the right pieces to proceed. The game isn't brutally difficult, like the 2d Metroid games, but at the same time requires attention and understanding of your surrounding. It's a game made purely for gamers. It combines elements from most genres into one genius package. If you haven't played this game, you should do so as soon as you can. I never expected it to be that good. Expand

On the Nintendo 64, many franchises attempted to jump into the 3rd dimension. Super Mario 64 successfully brought Mario to 3D. Ocarina of Time did the same for the Zelda franchise. Ocarina of Time did the same for the Zelda franchise. Both of these games were hailed as masterpieces and are still considered some of the greatest games of all time. However, a question remained: can Metroid successfully make the leap into 3D? No new Metroid games were released for the N64, and the question remained unanswered. That is, of course, until the Gamecube came out, and with it came Metroid Prime.

Metroid Prime is, simply put, one of the best games on the Gamecube. Every aspect of it is refined to near perfection.

The graphics are outstanding by any standard. You can tell a game looked good back when it came out if it still looks amazing in 2013.
The sound design was amazing as well. The music perfectly fits every zone you enter, providing an excellent background to the exploration that you undertake. Every shot you fire makes a crisp and punctual noise that echos with your surroundings.

Perhaps the greatest aspect of Metroid Prime is its gameplay. The reason the gameplay is so good is because it's a perfect translation of the old school 2D Metroid games. You still find power-ups, new suits and new beams as you further explore the world of Tallon IV. Every now and again, you come across a large boss that takes a lot of skill to defeat. It's classic Metroid from beginning to end, and it's all awesome.

The only issue with the game is regarding a later section of the game that can be quite boring, as it involves a lot of unnecessary backtracking. It's not a huge deal, but it can be a little annoying.

Bottom line is that this game is phenomenal. A must play for all people.

'Metroid Prime' is NOT a normal first-person shooter; 'Metroid' games have been around since the 1980s, and have never been about just shooting and surviving, there's a lot more to it. Power-ups, new abilities, upgrades and such are vital to success in this game, and it requires much more thought than the everyday shooter. This isn't to say that 'Metriod Prime' doesn't deliver when it comes to the shooting action; to put it bluntly, it's cool, and the action gets pretty frantic. What annoys me is when people go on about how this game isn't like other shoot 'em ups; surely it's nice to have games being produced that do something DIFFERENT to every other shoot 'em up? I highly recommend this game; it delivers in every conceivable way a game should, and, with it being a 'Player's Choice' title now, you're picking up a great game for a good price.

Even within those games there's even a smaller quantity of games that manage to become part of ourselves, living in our memories for years, even decades. The intro for this game, managed to single-handedly engrave that moment, those 40 50 seconds so deep within my brain that became the most memorable moment in my gaming life.
If the job of the intro of any game is a statement on how good will it be, this intro might as well be the best intro in vedeogame history. But enough about the intro, the important areas are gameplay, story and presentation:
-Gameplay: The controls are a bit odd at first since the game is in a first person perspective; you move with the control stick, hold R to survey, and hold L to lock view, move the C-Stick in one of the 4 directions to select a weapon and likewise with the D-Pad for the visors. You may expect dual anlog control for a first person game, but Prime does not uses it. In the context, the controls are flawless since there's no area where you feel cheated because you couldn't aim correctly since the game offers a lock-on targeting system similar to Zelda.
The way the map is laid out is brilliant, it's very similar to Super Metroid where you'd see an unaccessible area and aquire an upgrade to access that area, the way that ends up working without hand-holding is near perfect, it triggers your memories whenever you get the upgrade needed for a particular area, and that is something that never before had i seen on a game before it or super metroid.
There's some puzzle elements where you need to activate or deactivate certain mechanisms to obtain access or upgrades. With the morph ball the variety and creative use of the Power suit has never been so wide.
-Story: Is simple, you receive a distress signal in space, such signal comes from an space pirate experimentation frigate. You get there and find several pirates dead. You progress further and discover the source: A mutated form of a parasite that killed them. Later on you kill such creature and the frigate enters a self-destruct mode, you escape from it and in the way out you find your nemesis Ridley.
Ridley escapes in to the nearest planet and you chase after him. Later in the game you discover the real threat.. That's just what the game presents to us on a superficial level, however because there's a scan capability built in to the power suit, there are a lot of scan points scattered through the planet and scanning them reveals the story behind the planet, some chozo info. and the space pirate's point of view of the situation. The way these are implemented is brilliant, they're there only for those who want to read them.
-Presentation: This may be the most influential category in the game. The visuals (For the time) where spectacular to say the least. The environments are so rich, full of life and dead in some cases, which is not a bad thing. The atmosphere created in the game is the most impressive i've experienced in a game, in the rainy overworld you feel isolated, but at the same time watched, observed by all of the life's lifeforms crawling all around you. In the Magmoor caverns you feel a bit more comfortable since the whole area is underground. In the Phazon mines you constantly feel like in any moment you could die to space pirates, and the way the music reflects these situations is superb. The music in this game is also extremely fitting and causes awe just by listening them. This world you experience through samus's eyes is filed with details, the rain will fall down to your visor, the water pours down as you emerge from a water source, intense light blinds you for a brief period of time, some enemies cause static in the visor, moths in the environment will approach the light that the morph ball emanates.. those little touches makes the world feel alive and you get that feel from the beginning to the end credits.
    It really is masterful.

This game has aged so well. The graphics today are still respectable. The gameplay is fluid and innovative, after a new transition from a platformer to a 3d game.

Metroid Prime is a game that makes you rethink why you play games. I would say its the best game for the Gamecube and the best game from that Era. The immersive environment and gameplay make it one of my favorite games of all time.

This game will keep you curious with its unique puzzles and mechanics. From the time you leave your ship to when the credits play, this game is amazing.

While I don't think it quite tops Halo, Metroid Prime is one of the best first person shooters ever (even though Nintendo technically classifies it as a "first person adventure" game). While I don't think it quite tops Halo, Metroid Prime is one of the best first person shooters ever (even though Nintendo technically classifies it as a "first person adventure" game). We were all a little bit skeptical when a first person Metroid was revealed, but any fears we had were quickly vanquished at the release of the game.

For starters, not only does this game have a really good story, but a fantastic and creative implementation of it. Rather than stooping as low as giving Samus a voice to carry out the story like Team Ninja later did with Other M, Retro Studios had most of the story learned by scanning various Chozo Scripts and Pirate Logs, thus letting gamers see the story from another point of view for once. Reading about the spread of the phazon builds tons of suspense, and drove me forward as my curiosity grew. People who say this game has no story just aren't playing the game the right way.

The gameplay in this game is outstanding as well. The elements of Metroid are blended perfectly with first person shooter elements, and the combat is spectacular. While some of the earlier boss fights seem a little underwhelming, the later boss fights are very challenging and exciting. The exploration is wonderful beyond words, and the world is packed with more secrets to find than Zelda games, which is saying a lot. Not to mention, the scanning feature is a very inventive way to add another element to the game, and the scan log adds even more things necessary to do to 100 percent the game. Oh, and if you didn't already guess, the replay value is extremely high.

The controls seem a little strange at first, but since the game is built around those controls, it plays much, much smoother than you might imagine when you first start the game.

The graphics of Metroid Prime are ahead of its time, and still look amazing today. I rarely saw a texture or object I thought looked undetailed or blocky. In addition, the soundtrack is outstanding, with memorable tracks for each location and event in the game.

Overall, this game is a masterpiece that is easily one of the best games on the system. Anyone who has a Gamecube cannot call their game library complete without Metroid Prime.

This game is a PRIME example for a Metroid game, ha ha see what I did there? From the derilect Space Pirate frigate to the Impact Crater, it has you suspenseful for the next event. The bosses are challenging and the exploration isn't too tedious. It keeps you waiting for the next power-up to progress.

This is, hands down, the best Metroid Prime installment in the Metroid Prime trilogy and the best overall in the Metroid franchise without any doubts. If you don't own a GameCube and own a Wii, you can also play this in the Metroid Prime Trilogy which that game will be affected by scores from games like this and its sequels.

This and Smash Bros Melee are the best games on Game Cube, and probably the two games that will be remembered in 2050 and so on. Sadly, Prime 2 Echoes didn't make a fine sequel.

Every aspect of the game is incredible. Graphics, soundtrack, gameplay is FAIRLY UNIQUE(I fail to see any other game combining adventuring and exploration in first person) and the story is pretty sci-fi. It's just delicious to play that game!

It doesn't matter if you've never played a Metroid game before - Prime will kick your ass and unrelentingly own you. [A+; Jan 2003, p.62]
  3. It oozes with so much addictiveness that the storyline plays second fiddle and reminds you of a time when gameplay was an integral part of gaming. Put simply, this is one of the best games I have played in a long, long time. [Grade = A+]
