Metroid prime is the best game of it's console generation while also fulfilling all necessary gameplay aspects that Metroid fans have come to know and love.

This is probably Nintendo's best games ever released and one of the best franchises they've ever had (Other M be damned). It still gets a perfect score because I can't think of another Nintendo game worth of 10/10 except for StarFox64, Kirby 64, or maybe even SSBB (with the minus mod, of course). The game looks great and plays better than any other console FPS game I've been forced to endure, so it already is miles above Halo and CoD. It also is a truly immerse game with well constructed environments. The story is, much like a Valve game, in the background and never in your face with obnoxious cutscenes. You can gather more information with your Scan Visor if you want to know more about what's going on, you can speculate it and just shoot a bunch of dudes, or you can use a walkthrough and ruin the experience for yourself entirely. But the story all "do, don't show" and it works incredibly well. But, as I said, I have to criticize it somewhere. I think the lack of a hard mode from the beginning is an annoyance. you have to beat the game first before you can use it and that isn't cool. Why should I have to replay a game for difficulty changes? Shouldn't I just be allowed to pick the setting I want whether it be the one that holds my hand or kicks me in the balls? Also, some scans are a 1-shot-deal in that you can only scan a dude at ONE point in the game and if you miss it, that's it. I get that for Boss Monsters because you'll scan them anyway to figure out a weakness. But I think it was Ice Shriek bats are in only one place for the first time you pass through it and then they are gone forever. That seems like a rather dick move on Retro Studio's part. But the good HORRENDOUSLY outweighs the bad. If you are, for some reason, just now getting a gamecube and you don't have this in your collection, I have one of two things for you to do. First, get your head examined. If you are mentally healthy, you have no excuse to not get this game. If you are, for some reason, not mentally healthy, then go back to wasting hours of your time playing Halo Reach and enjoy your generic shooter **** Expand

    - Controls: The controls in Metroid Prime work over all very well throughout the game. The lack of manual aiming without the R buttons is solved via the use of the lock on feature. Negatives
-Replay Value: One might not be compelled to play this prolonged adventure again, although if they do they will realize just how excellent the game was when they'd played it the first time. Like the superb Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Metroid Prime starts you off in the thick of it and then gradually builds back up into action, both games allowing a great sense of a capacity for exploration, something generally lacking from Resident Evil 4's more cheap and gory thrills. With its lock on shooting style, Metroid Prime satisfies those looking for an arcade-style experience in a deep adventure. One particular highlight is entering the beautiful snow covered Phenandra Drifts which, like very other level, hides a labyrinth-like Alice in Wonderland series of tunnels and pathways. The music in this game is perfect- alternatively beautiful and subtle or strident and scary. The backtracking is understandable though sometimes results in a huge journey back to a previous point however the control system, which I found otherwise brilliant, makes one the later bosses too tough. The boss battles are also very enjoyable, and the landscapes and level designs in Metroid Prime are breathtaking. Those are what I thought made Metroid Prime so excellent besides the way it was revoulotionary for a 2D side scrolling series to become a FPA. The landscapes were just beautiful. I would give Metroid Prime a perfect score, however it was very very close to being perfect. There were at least two flaws which are minior and basically just me nit picking. I know it's not worth mentioning but I see reviewing as pointing out the good and bad even if it's just nit picking. The one flaw I had with Metroid Prime was some of the load times. The loading screen when you enter an elevator to go to a different location. I think they could've done better work on that. Then there was these doors that wouldn't open for a few seconds even after you shot them. Of course those doors are a lot worse in Metroid Prime 3. So I do not give perfect scores away, but Metroid Prime was very very close to being perfect in my opinion. Those load times are all that held it back. But I still see it as an incredible game. 98/100 Expand

The game's story is somewhat non-existent, the controls feel a little bit awkward for a gamecube controller (But Retro studios and Nintendo still did the effort and I congratulate them) and the fact that you get to explore the same areas for the 3th or 4th time can be a little frustrating and boring. Retro Studios prove themselves to be masters of presentation with this game. The graphics are technically incredible, but it is the art-direction which is truly awe-inspiring. The sound design is crisp and powerful, and the score is an atmospheric mix of organic and electronic elements. The gameplay is where this game truly stands out as one of the games, if not THE game, of this generation. All (well, most) of the classic Metroid tropes are transposed to a three dimensional world wonderfully. The morphball can be rolled through narrow passages too small to otherwise traverse, or rolled back and forth on massive halfpipes; combat is both intuitive and intense, Samus having her standard power beam and missiles, along with three additional beam upgrades and four beam-missile combos; the environments all contain numerous secrets and hidden areas, ensuring that the ubiquitous Metroid backtracking is fully in place. Exploration, in fact, is in my opinion the most engaging and rewarding facet of the game. A new addition to the Metroid formula comes in the form of Samus's four visors, which change the way you interect with the world around you. You begin the game with the combat visor and the scan visor. The first represents the standard viewing mode in which you can make good use of Samus's arsenal of weapons, but it is this second visor which gives Prime it's trump card. The scan visor allows the player to scan almost every conceivable element of the game world -- items, enemies, technology, landscape, Space Pirate computer terminals, the list goes on -- and retrieve images and data which are then displayed on the screen whilst the game action pauses. Not only do these entries provide necessary clues to solve the game's numerous puzzles, but they are fascinating in their own right. Scans also serve to slowly unveil the story behind the game, a feature which, while not entirely original, is by far the most impressive and fully-developed example of this style of narrative (Metroid's scans are on a different plain entirely from Resident Evil's hackneyed 'files', for instance). All of these game elements -- graphics, music, sound design, scanning -- combine to create what is the most immersive videogame world I have ever entered into. Everything feels genuine and real -- through the windows of elevator shafts you are given tantalisingly brief glimpses of the site you will ultimately reach in the game's last few minutes; scanning Space Pirate computer terminals will reveal logs of their biological experiments, troop orders and security protocols, and in one memorable instance even morale-boosting propaganda. From the game's electrifying opening sequence onboard a seemingly deserted frigate right through to the incredible climactic battle, Metroid Prime oozes style, atmosphere, maturity, intelligence, and, most importantly, fun. It is both lengthy and challenging; it never outstays its welcome. Metroid Prime is the most immersive game I have ever had the joy of experiencing, and the best title currently available on the GameCube. I haven't played a better game this generation. Suberb beyond words. A modern masterpiece, a future classic. Buy it. Now. Expand

Metriod Prime isn't a game that you just pick up and hope to beat in 3 or 4 hours: it requires a good chunk of you life and you will be more than willing to give it. Yes, the controls seem weird at first, but after maybe 30 minutes you realize they are perfect for how the game is designed. The story presentation is also awesome, if you just want to play the game you can, but if you want a great story you can take the time to read it, awesome for replaying the game. Super Metroid is still the best, and probably always will be, but this game comes close. Real close. Even better, if you wanted a 2D shooter, you got Fusion, in addition to this fantastic game. For once, a game that lives up to all the rave reviews. Metroid fans may be a little disappointed with the transition to 3D, as Samus is somewhat less versatile than in her traditional 2D outings. That said, this is an exceptional game. Metroid fans may be a little disappointed with the transition to 3D, as Samus is somewhat less versatile than in her traditional 2D outings. That said, this is an exceptional game. Controls are tricky at first, and there are times when I sincerely wished for a "180-degree-turn" button, but once you get used to them you'll wonder why you found them so hard. Sound and music is good and typically Metroid, and graphics are nothing short of stunning. Gameplay can be a bit frustrating sometimes, but is deep and pretty open-ended - there's a whole planet out there for you to explore, ingenious secrets to find, upgrades to collect and annoyingly tough bosses to dispatch, all of which makes up for a very satisfying package. If you have a Gamecube there's no reason why you shouldn't own this. Expand

It doesn't matter if you've never played a Metroid game before - Prime will kick your ass and unrelentingly own you. [A+; Jan 2003, p.62]
  3. It oozes with so much addictiveness that the storyline plays second fiddle and reminds you of a time when gameplay was an integral part of gaming. Put simply, this is one of the best games I have played in a long, long time. [Grade = A+]
