This game was worth my 15 dollars. The graphics are shiny and the gameplay is fast and improved on the 2 games before it. Why is this game hated for is my question?

Not as god as it's predecessor due to it having a little too much going on! I mean all the shells and stars and special moves just took away from the experience for me. Visually it was obviously far superior to the N64 version but the gameplay became too cluttered. Still fun, but could have been better.

this game is the dumbest peice of crap i've ever seen. To create an element of skill in the game that it would otherwise lack, nintendo put special moves into a game of tennis. this game is boring and i reccomend nobody buy it.

Really good character design - all are different and have complementary strengths and weaknesses, not to mention really unique styles of movement so the difference between Boo and Waluigi is felt in the controller. GREAT party / drinking game.

Unlimited fun! As it happens with every super mario feature (like super mario strikers, super smash brothers melee, mario party and more we all know about)

One of my favorite games on the Gamecube. A brilliant and well-developed game.

Really great and addictive, specail move cutscenes get annoying and game can be a little repetitive.

This game is very much like the Mario Golf sequel on gamecube. Camelot for the most part got it right, but they also added some minor unwelcome elements (for mario golf it was an easy swing that can't be disabled and boo moving across the screen every 3 seconds). Mario Power Tennis has power offensive and defensive moves which can't be turned off except in multiplayer. They add a neat new element to gameplay, but you have to watch a predone 2-3 second animation sequence every time. It's a bit disruptive to gameplay when these happen 3 or 4 times every rally. It can also be frustrating to see an opponent return an obvious winner after it's already past him. Again, it can be an interesting gameplay element, but they seriously should have included the option to disable it. Other than that, there's not a lot to complain about. Maybe unforced errors could be a bit more frequent. It may take you 10 tennis matches before you see a ball called out. The new gimmick courts are maybe the most significant addition from mario golf 64. Some of the are excellent fun. Expand

I was a big fan of the n64 version of mario tennis, but this one blows it away.

While character imbalance when it comes to power moves can be very jarring and frustrating gameplay element, the core of the game is still good and it is a decent addition to the Mario sports series.

out of all the Mario sports games (besides Mario kart of course) this one is the most fun. there is nothing negative I can find to say about this game, but at the end of the day its just a tennis game, but a really good tennis game

They really gave a lot of attention to this game. Every character has his animations, the intro is great and I love the bloopers, too. This kind of things miss in the new games. The gameplay is great. What I don't love are the special shots. They are just... too random. Mini games are very good, too. It's a game that you will play for a lot of time.

Tennis in general is kind of a boring sport in my opinion, but this gives it so much life! Once you start up the game you will witness the best opening cutscene in any Mario game to date, which tells a fun story and is a joy to watch! There are a good amount of characters to pick from, with a couple very unique choices like Wiggler and Petey Piranha. Then we have Fly Guy who was kind of lazy and I would have switched him out with Birdo. The courts in this game are all super fun to play, with three basic and seven gimmick courts bringing the total to 10. They’re all based off different games in the Mario series and sub-series like Luigi’s Mansion, WarioWare and Super Mario Sunshine! Gimmicks include ghosts on Luigi’s Mansion and klaptraps on DK Jungle, and they can be turned on or off. The game controls solidly and it’s a large enhancement from the N64 game. Each character has two unique special shots, an offensive and a defensive shot, and they tend to spice things up. There is an item mode that you can play which can be a bit too frantic, but if they balanced it out more it could have been better. The game is visually great with many different references to the games the courts are based on. There are over 100 different music tracks, which is a lot for a Mario Tennis game. There are a bunch of different minigames to play as well with one for each court, including Artist on the Court, Mecha Bowser Mayhem, Chain Chomp Challenge and more, which are all very fun to play. With the heavy amount of customization, this is without a doubt the best Mario Teniis game there is, and there is so much to love about it! Expand

This game has a great soundtrack, but suffers from being too gimmicky compared to its N64 predecessor.

MPT may not reinvent the game, but it definitely whacks it up enough to warrant a revisit. [Jan 2005, p.120]
  3. Compared to "Virtua Tennis," the undisputed king of the tennis franchises around here, Mario Power Tennis is a bit fuzzier and more forgiving in every respect, but, unless you turn them off, the power shots shift the dynamic in quite a different direction.
