While it might not be quite as feature intensive on a technical level as the "The Chessmaster" series, it's an enjoyable, well-made chess simulation that provides the essential elements of the game and even manages to break some new ground.
-
The games greatest asset and what saves it from mediocrity is its unbelievably tough artificial intelligence. Your chess know-how will be tested severely and if you give VK some thorough playing sessions, you actually will improve your chess smarts.

Nintendo PowerIt's great for players of all skill levels. [June 2002, p.154]

Essentially, if you want to improve your chess and bring a competitive edge to it, this is the ideal pocket edition to carry round with you. The only complaint and its a substantial one is the lack of a save facility.
-
The AI is still good enough to make the game enjoyable and challenging but the lack of some key features leaves you feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

I found no glaring flaws or deal breakers in the game, but despite nifty extras like the story mode and the tutorial mode, VK offers a a fairly simple rendition of the game.
