  1. While it might not be quite as feature intensive on a technical level as the "The Chessmaster" series, it's an enjoyable, well-made chess simulation that provides the essential elements of the game and even manages to break some new ground.
  2. The game’s greatest asset and what saves it from mediocrity is its unbelievably tough artificial intelligence. Your chess know-how will be tested severely and if you give VK some thorough playing sessions, you actually will improve your chess smarts.
  3. Nintendo Power

It's great for players of all skill levels. [June 2002, p.154]

Essentially, if you want to improve your chess and bring a competitive edge to it, this is the ideal pocket edition to carry round with you. The only complaint – and it’s a substantial one – is the lack of a save facility.

The AI is still good enough to make the game enjoyable and challenging but the lack of some key features leaves you feeling somewhat unsatisfied.
  6. I found no glaring flaws or deal breakers in the game, but despite nifty extras like the story mode and the tutorial mode, VK offers a a fairly simple rendition of the game.
