While I have to quibble about the juming controls being clunky; the action is well-paced, the graphics match the cartoon in lively colors and interesting layout, the story is respectable, and the sound is a nice touch. [Feb 2003, p.110]
  2. The animation is truly a sight to behold. Jack almost moves as he would in the cartoon. Even the sword slashes move like they do sometimes on the shows.

Overall, the controls respond well and the actions are done very well.

The action is solid for the most part and the RPG elements add some depth. It's got its problems, but it's still a world ahead of most games based on a lucrative license.
  5. "It wants to be Castlevania." The double-jump, the wall-jump, double-click dash, the save-monoliths, they’re all here.

A cartoon as cool and stylized as Samurai Jack deserves a game to match, and Virtucraft Studios deliver. [May 2003, p.63]

Jumping across wide gaps can be difficult because of the angular shapes of the game's platforms. [Feb 2003, p.158]

This game isn't a bad little adventure if you're an avid watcher of the Cartoon Network series, or if you just want to hack and slash some futuristic evil; but just be prepared to fight with the controls, and don't expect the most intense action, either.
  9. The problem: Samurai Jack moves much too slowly and his vertical leap makes the real life Michael Jordan at age 40 look like Tobey Maguire's computer-enhanced Spider-Man in downtown New York.

The main problem with this game, though, is that the developers don't know Jack. [Summer 2003, p.46]
  11. While the game’s graphics manage to capture the look and visual style of the show, the stiff controls, redundant action, and frustratingly lousy collision detection ultimately sour the experience. Simply put, Samurai Jack is just no fun.

Samurai Jack is neck-and-neck with "E.T." for the Atari 2600. [Apr 2003, p.61]

It's a Metroidvania-style game with a decent-sized map. There are shortcuts to help reduce travel time between different areas, which are useful as the game requires you to backtrack frequently as you acquire new items and skills. The sprites in the game, particularly for Jack, nicely capture the look of the animated series. But the overall aesthetic of the game feels a little spare. It’s got the minimalism of the series but none of the artistry. The gameplay sometimes felt needlessly repetitive (so many spiders to kill in the first few stages) and the story was spread quite thin. Still, it was worth a play and offers some decent entertainment value. And it’s got that infectious theme song! Full Review »
