A proper remake of the first Pokémon game. What is the to say, it's a Pokémon game it's the first this has all the basic functions it can feel a bit long in the tooth because it's the first one , It's still a lovely time and has the best rival in the franchise ,

To be honest, apart from the fixed glitches, i still prefer playing the original games. This remake is much more slower paced, difficult and the new content is much like padding. Also personally, not fan of the new redesigns, the new mechanics that kills the simplistic design or the remastered soundtrack.
Feels like a downgraded Emerald in every way too.

Pokemon FireRed is perhaps a bit too faithful to the original Red and Green. The movesets of almost every opponent contains a load of subpar moves, making the game too easy -- just like the original games.

Additionally, the soundtrack is just...... not very enjoyable, compared to that of RSE. Again, maybe too faithful to the original.

The generation 1 remakes on the GBA are spectacularly done, however, remaking Kanto means you are still playing a game in Kanto. I know a lot of people harbor a lot of nostalgia for this region, Red for the Game Boy was also my first Pokémon game. But this game is just pretty flawed, the story is serviceable, but the real problems begin to arise when you consider the Pokémon available and the lack of post game.

The Pokémon you can collect are already pretty sparse, and I feel this is compounded by there being very clear "best in slot" Pokémon for certain types. This is something I really have only ever felt in the first generation, and while more options open up to you once you beat the game, since there is nearly no post game, there's not much reason to search them out once since you are already past the meat of the game's content.

Kanto served as a great foundation when the franchise first started, and probably slotted in nicely during the GBA era but now just feels kinda hollow compared to the other Pokémon games I've been playing. I've played this game enough times to shake off the dust of nostalgia and I did not like what I saw underneath.

All of that being said, I still think if you are a Pokémon fan it is worth playing through Kanto at least one time to see how far the franchise has come. While it may be at it's simplest here, it is still a serviceable Pokémon game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fire Red and Leaf Green are remakes of the very first games in Red, Blue, Green, and they improve on it significantly but oddly do not add as much as they could into it.

While they are certainly better than Ruby and Sapphire, the lack of a Battle Frontier makes it grind to complete halt once beaten. However, the grind to a halt is probably the most gradual of any Pokemon game I have played. Once you beat the Champion for the first time, you are assigned a new task of rescuing the Ruby and Sapphire after getting the National Pokedex upgrade. After your mission is complete, the Cerulean Cave opens up with Mewtwo once again in it, and there finally grinds to a complete halt.

While Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow ground to a complete halt after being beaten, it was forgivable when they literally started everything and were still working out the kinks back then. It is not forgivable in Fire Red and Leaf Green given how much more power was at their disposal and the higher expectations and standards here.

If you like wasting small bits of time here and there with your GBA - and especially if you're new to the series - this is still the best thing you get get on the portable. [Nov 2004, p.134]
