The first generation of pokemon games were lackluster, but they were at least excusable because it was the first entry of a series that didn’t yet know what it was. The remakes, however, do NOT have this excuse. Idk how people defend these games that could have fixed SO many of the game’s issues but instead decided the only change worth making was the waste of time known as the Sevii Islands. Kanto already had a terrible variety of mons, making you still encounter pidgeys when you were 6 badges in while locking most of the actual interesting ones behind the safari zone or hard-to-reach dungeon floors. And this isn’t just because they only had 151 to work with. Black and white had about the same number, and they were constantly giving you new and interesting pokemon to catch in every location. Kanto is just a boring region with a boring early game, no story, no interesting characters, nothing that makes you wanna explore, and a lategame that feels unfinished. How did they already make a good game in Ruby & Sapphire and then fail to fix the glaring mistakes that made gen 1 such a slog to get through? This game isn’t worth your time, go replay gen 5. 2. This game was built to appeal to both the veterans of the series and the new folks just itching to give Pokemon a try. It's a fair bet that the fans will get this game without much hesitation.

If you like wasting small bits of time here and there with your GBA - and especially if you're new to the series - this is still the best thing you get get on the portable. [Nov 2004, p.134]
