Sorry but this game is AWFUL!!! I had such high hopes back in the day when I played these on GBA but alas I was disappointed. No storyline, you have to complete the game three times, craptastic chibi graphics, and childish crisis scenarios. Capcom truly trolled us with this release. If you want to play Battle Network the way it was meant to be played play 2 or 3....hell even 1 wasSorry but this game is AWFUL!!! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lets start with the statistics: This game has the lowest number of battle chips and the lowest number of enemy types of any game in the series, and you can feel it.

The town maps are dull and small compared to previous games.

The net map is uninteresting spaghetti you repeatedly backtrack through for every mission, except with the addition of annoying modifiers, for instance, one mission has you sneak through an area you've previously been through, sending you back to the beginning if you're spotted. The next has you go through that exact same area except now spikes are coming out of the ground hurting you.

They forgot everything they learned in the previous games about making it clear where to go to find things. One larger (not a side-quest) mission is "Get 50 points" and it doesn't tell you what that means. You're expected to backtrack to everywhere in the game, click on literally everything, and speak to literally every NPC, because they just hid the points in random places. That poster in the middle of a group of other posters? They hid a point there. How about the long auto-scrolling section? They hid points in only one of those. If you choose the wrong one first, you're likely to wrongly assume there are none in the others. If you chose the right one first, you're likely to be disappointed to find no points in the others. It was a frustrating waste of time even with the aid of a walkthrough.

The story is comprised of 3 tournaments in which you solve your opponent's problems before fighting them. None of these sub-stories are compelling or memorable. It is literally this anime's tournament filler arc.

The way you play no longer determines which style change you develop. They've replaced it with a watered-down version of that mechanic.

I didn't finish this game. I got about half-way through before cutting my losses, reading a walkthrough for the story, and moving onto the next in the series. It's an ugly nightmare. If you must play it, do not feel bad about using a walkthrough.

Worst storyline possible Capcom could do better.

If there's one complaint, it's the visuals. They're not bad, just more or less the same visuals we've seen since part one. [Aug 2004, p.89]
  2. While Mega Man Battle Network 4 shares most, if not all, of its play mechanics with its three predecessors, it still offers some new aspects and, above all else, its still very fun.
  3. The combat is just as good as ever, even if the plot has been mucked up a bit. It’s not like these games ever had the best plots to begin with anyway.
