If there's one complaint, it's the visuals. They're not bad, just more or less the same visuals we've seen since part one. [Aug 2004, p.89]
  2. While Mega Man Battle Network 4 shares most, if not all, of its play mechanics with its three predecessors, it still offers some new aspects and, above all else, its still very fun.
  3. The combat is just as good as ever, even if the plot has been mucked up a bit. It’s not like these games ever had the best plots to begin with anyway.
  4. The depth is simply amazing, it seemed like there was something to learn every time I played it.

Even with the new systems, the core mechanics are losing their edge and the tournament structured story isn't helping things, either.
  6. MMBN4 has slicker interfaces and improved visuals.

A space-themed central story gives the game greater scope than its predecessors. [Aug 2004, p.123]
  8. The RPG-style fights are uninspiring, and the storyline is simplistic. Still, the graphics are bright and inviting, with menus that are easily navigable. [June 2004, p.138]
  9. 70
It's difficult to dismiss the overlying cuteness and simple-but-solid gameplay, which continues to put the series on the top tier of portable RPGs.
  10. The story is lifeless, and the circa-2001 graphics and audio just don't cut it anymore.

This iteration still hasn't fixed the one problem that's been plaguing the series since its inception: snooze-inducing level design. Another decent entry in the series, but nothing more. [June 2004, p.73]
  12. Thanks to the fun battle system, BN4 comes up as a good game, but if not for the marred music and questionable story, BN4 could have been so much better.

As solid as the existing game design still is on the GBA, I'm ready for something fresh.
  14. Put simply, the games are beginning to wear thin. If you’d don’t have any of the previous editions of Mega Man Battle Network, this is a good one to buy and enjoy. For returning players, hold off purchasing and demand that Capcom do a little bit more next time.

The visuals are on par with previous entries in the series. They're colorful and cartoon-like, with non-threatening enemies and friendly characters.
  16. A great Megaman introduction for beginners. But owners of its forerunners will struggle to find enough new features to warrant upgrading.

Fans of the Battle Network series will delight in the further adventures of Lan and Mega Man, but everyone else is warned to stay clear. [Aug 2004, p.78]
  18. Cheat Code Central

At this point, Mega Man doesn't even have the credibility of Yu-Gi-Oh, in my opinion. If you can't resist purchasing one of these games, do everything in your power to resist buying both of them.

I prefer this one over the other version but not by much the game doesn't change much but it is good. The series is starting to get stall. This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Lets start with the statistics: This game has the lowest number of battle chips and the lowest number of enemy types of any game in the series, and you can feel it.

The town maps are dull and small compared to previous games.

The net map is uninteresting spaghetti you repeatedly backtrack through for every mission, except with the addition of annoying modifiers, for instance, one mission has you sneak through an area you've previously been through, sending you back to the beginning if you're spotted. The next has you go through that exact same area except now spikes are coming out of the ground hurting you.

They forgot everything they learned in the previous games about making it clear where to go to find things. One larger (not a side-quest) mission is "Get 50 points" and it doesn't tell you what that means. You're expected to backtrack to everywhere in the game, click on literally everything, and speak to literally every NPC, because they just hid the points in random places. That poster in the middle of a group of other posters? They hid a point there. How about the long auto-scrolling section? They hid points in only one of those. If you choose the wrong one first, you're likely to wrongly assume there are none in the others. If you chose the right one first, you're likely to be disappointed to find no points in the others. It was a frustrating waste of time even with the aid of a walkthrough.

The story is comprised of 3 tournaments in which you solve your opponent's problems before fighting them. None of these sub-stories are compelling or memorable. It is literally this anime's tournament filler arc.

The way you play no longer determines which style change you develop. They've replaced it with a watered-down version of that mechanic.

I didn't finish this game. I got about half-way through before cutting my losses, reading a walkthrough for the story, and moving onto the next in the series. It's an ugly nightmare. If you must play it, do not feel bad about using a walkthrough.

Sorry but this game is AWFUL!!! I had such high hopes back in the day when I played these on GBA but alas I was disappointed. No storyline,Sorry but this game is AWFUL!!! I had such high hopes back in the day when I played these on GBA but alas I was disappointed. No storyline, you have to complete the game three times, craptastic chibi graphics, and childish crisis scenarios. Capcom truly trolled us with this release. If you want to play Battle Network the way it was meant to be played play 2 or 3....hell even 1 was DECENT. This game is awful. Full Review »
