Whereas Dr. Mario is a bit more simplistic and easy to jump in and out of for quick portable sessions, the slightly deeper Puzzle League overshadows Dr. Mario's lasting appeal with its greater variety of game modes, play options and presentation elements.
-
While the core gameplay here is considerable, and is head and shoulders above most other imitative offerings from other developers, it is still exceedingly bare-bones.
-
The addition of playing the games from different viewpoints just add some variety and welcome change for newcomers and veterans of these two games, and they're sure to keep players stressful while coming back for more.
-
For twenty bucks (and the cost of a link cable, if you don't have yours anymore), it's hard to find a more addictive puzzler [than "Puzzle League."] It's light on the superficial extras, but the basic can't-stop gameplay is completely intact, which is what really counts.
-
As a package it's excellent to have two timeless games to dip back into whenever you feel like it, but there's still the niggling feeling that Nintendo's pricing strategy for such things is bordering on insane.

Nintendo PowerWhat these games lack in style and innovation they make up for in challenge and fun. [Jan 2006, p.114]
-
I'd give these games a higher score if they were even more economically priced -- honestly, you can find the same quality of gameplay by downloading "Bejeweled" onto your cell phone for $7 -- but they're still worth a shot if puzzles are your thing.
