Not the worst Yoshi game out there, but certainly it is borderline mediocre. It is not well designed, and not much fun.

Why is this game being reviewd as better than the 3DS Yoshi game? This game was pretty bad on the DS. A lot of the levels and puzzles are taken completely from the SNES original. Using Baby Donkey Kong to climb vines was pretty interesting and at least different. Switching the babies is very annoying and slows the pace of the gameplay. This game is offensively mediocre.

I am a HUGE fan of the original game, but I'm not so big on this one. Why? Well, for one, it's so similar that it hardly feels different at all. Second, the bosses are kind of boring and the levels too huge to be interesting. Lastly, the difficulty level is brutal. Don't underestimate it due to its cute visuals - if you want to find all the secrets, or just pass the game, I am a HUGE fan of the original game, but I'm not so big on this one. Why? It isn't fun challenging, it's annoying hard. That's why I don't like it. Expand

Yoshi's Island DS looks brilliant; the picture book-like artstyle matches really well with the general feel that Yoshi gives. This mechanic also allows for variations in difficulty, as some of the abilities are slightly harder to get used to. Also, only one baby means that another's ability might need to be sacrificed. The level designs are boring, though, and none of the levels felt memorable, unlike New Super Mario Bros. The game itself is also not challenging, and after a few hours, might feel easy. It's a good game, but not as great as it could have been. Expand

Now just because I gave this a 6/10, doesn't mean it's a bad game. I just think that it's very overrated. I'm not going to be rating this specific edition of Yoshi's Island, but just the game as a whole. I don't think Yoshi's Island's long level design fits the game. It fits something like Donkey Kong Country, but not this game. I felt just trying to rush through the game, and nothingNow just because I gave this a 6/10, doesn't mean it's a bad game. I felt just trying to rush through the game, and nothing really stood out to me. I guess the thing that really stands out are the bosses. The bosses in this game were all really well designed and fun. Especially the final boss. Overall it's a good platformer, but really forgettable, and boring at points. I give it a 6/10, and a C. 1. Twists, such as the ability to play with different attributes thanks to Baby Mario, Baby Princess Peach, Baby DK, and more add variety to an extremely fun adventure. Through 40-plus levels, vibrant graphics and lively environments make things feel fresh and unique.

It's an adequate platformer, yes--with solid controls and great first-half pacing--but I'd never choose this over the sublime original. [Dec. 2006, p.150

Fun and light-hearted play. A tongue of praise to Yoshi's Island 2 for not only remaining true to the classical style but also adding new elements to keep things fresh.
