Nintendo PowerSquad Command smartly separates the live battle scene from a comprehensive map on either of the DS's dual screens, and both stylus and button controls are intuitive. [Jan 2008, p.87]
-
Nintendo GamerWhether you're into Warhammer or not, this is fantastic turn-based strategising, great to see on DS, with a brilliant multiplayer. [Mar 2008, p.69]
-
The lack of a grid is probably the biggest pull-down for this game; if it had been a bit more structured, it could have really been great. But that problem doesn't negate all the good things about this game. It's still addictive, and it's still fun. Squad Command may not be the best strategy game out there, but it's by no means the worst.
-
I was very surprised with Squad Command. The Action Point system is deep, well balanced, and always keeps the game entertaining.
-
Just like the PSP version, the inability to choose which characters to take into battle in single-player rather limits the potential of its fifteen missions.
-
There's some addicting gameplay to be found in Squad Command, particularly for Warhammer 40,000 fans, but you've got to be willing to put up with the game's flaws and annoyances.
-
Squad Command is far from perfect, but it is also the closest thing to playing actual Warhammer 40K on a videogame system. Turn-based strategy enthusiasts will definitely want to check this game out, and if you are a Warhammer fan then it is really a no-brainer.
-
Warhammer 40K isn’t perfect and you’ll gather that in the first few missions, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a look.
-
The visual downgrade from the PSP to DS version make this a better bet on Sony's platform. Still, if you're a DS owner who's already conquered Advance Wars multiple times over, and are tiring of the brimming mini-game and sim line-up, you might appreciate this turn-based tactical title.
-
AceGamezDespite the laundry list of problems that plague Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command and pervade this review, the game can be fun at times. That is if you're willing to fight through the frustration of playing through missions multiple times, either to cheat to find enemy positions or because you got smoked by an enemy tank off-screen.
-
I was hoping for more in a title like this and although I admit there is some fun in there, the real deal is that the game is lacking a lot of the qualities that make the Warhammer license.
-
A squandered opportunity. Too many bad design decisions overwhelm a potentially solid little game. Hopefully, though, this won't be the last we see of W40K on the DS.
-
In the end, it is blatantly obvious that this game was initially designed for the PSP and ported over to the DS in an effort to capitalize on Nintendo's massive market share.
-
Fun multiplayer options salvage an otherwise troubled game, but that alone can't make the rest of the game any more fun.
-
The result is a title that gives a tactical experience leaving a lot to be desired. There are just too many issues to recommend it to people who just want a deep tactical game, even for fans of the genre.
-
This is a difficult one, the missions look and play extremely well so this should score highly, but due to the sheer lack of substance outside of those missions means you'll struggle to build an emotional attachment to the game and without a solid scenarios to drive you onto the next level you'll put it down as quickly as you pick it up.
-
I would like to think that I'm a patient person, Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command pushes the limits of doing nothing without any gameplay.
-
Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command has a few strong features and can, occasionally, be fun, but we're extremely hesitant to recommend it because there are so many mechanical issues at hand.
-
Visual problems and poor use of the second screen take a toll on the DS port of Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command.
-
It is a mind-numbing experience that will leave you with a sour taste in your mouth.
-
The host of technical issues mean that Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command ultimately feels like a bad joke played on anyone who expected it to provide a compelling strategy experience.
