WayForward's Thor is truly remarkable, as it stands not only as a great movie-based game but an extremely competent one as well.

Overall Thor's adventure is not as good as the comparable Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but it is a nice side-scrolling brawler with a nice story and gigantic bosses.

Thor: God of Thunder for Nintendo DS is a pretty enjoyable, "old school" 2D side scrolling beat'em-up. Beautiful from a technical standpoint, with high quality bitmap graphics, the game becomes very repetitive after a couple of levels.

The long levels get tedious at times, but the pacing is just good enough to get you through the game.

The game does get bogged down in far too many unskippable and boring dialogue sequences. [Issue#110, p.118]

WayForward set out to push the DS to its limit, and by Odin's beard, it succeeded with thunderous applause.

Well animated sprites, catchy music, challenging bosses and enough abilities to keep the admittedly monotonous action from grating on your soul.

WayForward clearly aimed to put out something more than the cheap cash-in and in the process produced probably the best of the Thor games and one of the better movie tie-ins in recent memory.

Achingly samey, but wholesome fun in small, level-sized bursts. [June 2011, p.63]

Gorgeous 2D art still can't forgive the needless repetition, but while the novelty lasts this is a great little brain dead brawler.

Thor DS, from what I've heard, might be the best Thor game, but it's not much more than a slightly-better-than-mediocre brawler with great art. WayForward junkies and big Thor fans should be the only people that look into getting this game, though it should satiate those folks quite well.

It's a sharp looking 2D brawler with loose ties to the upcoming film, but repetitive combat and a lack of depth keep it from greatness.

Even a deity can fall prey to that most pesky of villains: monotony. [May 2011, p.86]

There are inspired moments here, especially in the game's boss fights-the final two involve multi-jointed sprites spanning both screens-but they're few and far between.

Impressive boss battles aren't enough to save Thor: God of Thunder from its shallow combat.

Once you're finished, something that should only take about five hours, you can unlock the super hard Ragnorak mode, and maybe then your thirst for challenge will be sated, but at that point, why bother? There may be more moves to unlock and different costumes to flit about in, but by then you've seen all there is to see and honestly, hitting a giant with a hammer is only so interesting, regardless of how many different ways you can swing it.

Really, I don't blame WayForward or Sega for such a boring game -- both companies have had their share of excellent games. But it's like being given a painter's canvas and three crayons -- you can create all you want, but the material you're given isn't the best to work with. But when I think of all the other things I've could've done on my Saturday -- went for a walk, strolled by the beach, gone to see a movie -- I can only gaze up at the heavens and curse Thor's name.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Thor God of Thunder for the DS is the true definition of a Hidden Gem. A very good game, I’m quite impressed with WayForward’s work. This game is so unknown to people I can barely find anything online, like walkthroughs etc. It’s short, took me 4h25 to complete it. It shouldn’t be longer than that though, the combat can get repetitive especially if you don’t use the combos. If you do manage to figure out the combos then you’re in for a treat, it’s very satisfying to pull long combos. I had a hard time putting the game down to be honest. The game never really tells you about these combos, you have to discover them yourself, which was a shame because I would’ve like to use them from the beginning. Even the instruction manual had nothing about combos. There was a digital manual at some point on Sega’s website but I couldn’t find it. The pixel art is superb, what a beautiful game. The sprites are so good looking. And don’t get me started on the bosses, they are enormously beautiful! The dual screen feature is used in smart ways. I love that you can just fly into the top screen, stay airborne for a bit while kicking ass and throw Mjollnir around then dive bomb into the bottom screen. The touch pad is only used for the God Powers and that’s it, which is good in my opinion. I typically don’t like the touch screen features in video games. The game never gets too difficult. I died 10-15 times at most. The boss fights were the most challenging, especially the final boss. I kept dying within 10 seconds, then learned the patterns and voila, easy peasy. It’s weird that the cover on the case is the one of Chris Hemsworth because the story is not of the movie. It’s closer to the comics from my understanding. This game is still super cheap and it’s probably because people think it’s based off the movie when it’s not, and when that is the case it’s usually a terrible game. In this case, WayForward just did their own thing and absolutely nailed it. A co-op mode would have been a great addition. Awesome game. 8/10. Full Review »

Pero eso es todo lo malo realmente, el juego es mucho mejor de lo que podría esperarse de una adaptación de película. Esto es posible gracias al buen diseño de WayForward, genial animación y gran gameplay. Muy recomendable este juego. Full Review »
