Carbon-copy the classic star wars battlefront gameply, then change blasters to melee weapons, change the over-the-shoulder to top-down camera, put generic levels (mostly) in and call them epic set pieces.

And then, when that seems bad enough.. dumb it down further so that the system can play it and the battle becomes more of a squad-vs-squad game where there truly are not enough players

Disappointing, hard to play and fails to capture the magic of a good battlefront-style session.
Pass on this one, Mr Frodo, sir.

I kinda like this game, as a huge LOTR fan I enjoyed those battles and I find the strengths and weaknesses of each unit pretty balanced and the game feels satisfying in general

It's a shame, nowadays renting games seems to be an obscure, obsolete thing now. Anyway, I ended up purloining or actually purchasing the game from the DVD store and it ended up consolidating itself as a childhood memory. I recall playing as giant ents, escaping Balrog, after freeing the Dwarves in Moria and defending the White Tree against an onslaught of Orcish vermin. Good times, if copies of this archaic game are even still around then give it a gander. Expand

Capture the flag with Lord of the Rings characters is a pretty good idea for a game, and there is fun to be had with Conquest. More polish and more satisfying controls would have made this title really stand out, but as it is it's a decent action game with a great license.

As good as the DS may be, there are some things it just wasn't built for. [Feb 2009, p.89]
  3. The license promises much but Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a cheap cash-in that should be avoided. Even Grima Wormtongue would have to agree
