Sega attempts a heavily modified Sonic Drift title, is it fun and worth the money?
The game's racer roster contains 20 characters with 7 of them being from Sonic games, the characters behave slightly different on the DS version in comparison to the console versions and any group of racers that would normally share a vehicle are cut so that only one person is in each vehicle.

There is a decent amount of tracks but some look a little too similar to each other and comes off as looking a bit lazy overall. The game consists of a mission mode to go along with the single player, multiplayer, Wifi and Time Trial modes. The game has many unlockables such as hidden characters and new music. For people who like chasing achievements, the DS version has this as well surprisingly enough. The game itself plays in a manner similar to Mario Kart DS but with some different weapons, racing mechanics and other things that make it unique in comparison.
Although the game is fun, after completing mostly everything in the game, not even the Wifi multiplayer mode will save the game from eventually getting boring.
Overall, it is a decent racing game starring the characters of the Sega and Sonic universes but isn't as good or as memorable as Mario Kart DS.

This version was fun, but not as fun as the console versions. It's understandable why it's not just like the console version, and it's good for playing this game on the go, but if you were to choose between this and the console version, I'd say console, and only get this if you like Sonic racing games more than Mario Kart.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a racing game that plays like Mario Kart DS. Comparisons can't be helped, as it takes obvious influence from the MK series. It is definitely better than expectations, with good controls, unique vehicles and a wide cast of characters to play as available across several Sega franchises. It falters in replayability, though, due to unmemorable level design. AllSonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a racing game that plays like Mario Kart DS. It falters in replayability, though, due to unmemorable level design. All of the levels don't feel unique or separate from the others. In Mario Kart, nearly all tracks were memorable, as they all contained their individual identity, from the layout to the background to the colors, that clearly defined Bowser's Castle from Waluigi's Pinball. This means that this, ultimately is a good game, but suffers from limitations. Expand

Quite the well done game, but this game is a little on the wonky side, and certainly is a departure from the console releases.

    Just middle-of-the-road material. [Mar 2010, p.87]
  2. A good kart racer with plenty of content. A solid, if inferior, alternative to Mario Kart DS. [Mar 2010, p.84]

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing may not have a whole lot in the gameplay department that it can call its own, but Sumo Digital took what worked and built a SEGA-themed experience that captures what makes the company's games so memorable.
